– INTERLUDE – 2015

A PASSAGE OF DETOUR

THE MAIN BRIDGE

Marina Bay’s surrounding is filled with buildings that has significant historic meaning to Singapore in the past such as Clifford Pier, Custom House and etc. It is a place that reflects the timeline of Singapore from past to present. To retain this notion, a project that is set to bridge the present and future sustainable Singapore is introduced. The selected site, Marina Bridge has a meaning of being a transitional space. Acknowledging its natural occurrence as a temporary space of diversion, Interlude propose a cycle center. A series of transit spaces including a café, refreshment, retail, repair space and observation deck emerge out of the cycle route, acting as checkpoints for both cyclists and pedestrians.

– INTERLUDE – 2015

“ Studying the movement in the site to infuse rhythm and progression that evoke a blurred sense of motion throughout the space.”

STRUCTURE LITTING UP AT NIGHT

Movement of the cyclists and pedestrians on the bridge are observed and translated to the structure that emphasizes the linear movement forces of the site. At night, the structure blends in with the surrounding; the linear overhead light instead creates the rhythm in the space. The pods with solid lighting beckon the users to stop and divert from their journey. The unfolding of rhythm overtime lends it a dynamic character and the progression evoke a blurred sense of motion throughout the space. THE MAIN BRIDGE

– INTERLUDE – 2015

“ PERFORMANCE “ RETAIL SPACE

An articulated roof that extends out from the main bridge circulation space integrates the bridge and individual pods. The roof continues to angle towards the main core area, the workshop retail space. By creating an extension, a long corridor emerged and can be utilized as the retail display area for the bicycles. The placement of seating area next to the the workshop enables the users to observe the process and be fascinated by the repairing process and movements. Repairing becomes an act of performance and spectacle for passer by.

– INTERLUDE – 2015

ELEVATION A

Capturing the spirit of movement, pausing & transiting through repetition and rhythm along the bridge, the project provide a pause, a lull in the midst of motion and action of Marina Bay.

AN INFORMAL SPACE FOR INTERACTION

SHARED READING SPACE

Located at Geylang Bahru Industrial Area Block 86 Unit 1, 2 & 3. Books Junction is conceived as a hybrid between a café, bookstore, stationery retail and workshop space. It provides the users with a welcoming environment to congregate, interact and unwind. The project is a book café created in response to the issue of physical books being replaced with digital ones. Reading is not only an individual activity, it is instead, an important social activity. The shared experience of books is a genuine bond. With eclectic range of literature books to select from, lovers of literature will be brought together in this space as occasional group discussion and readings will be held. The scheme’s restrained and muted palette allows the reading material to take prominence, with a type of spaces spread across the shop house RETAIL SPACE

– THE FOOD VILLAGE – 2014

A SPACE THAT ENCOURAGE GATHERING AND SEPARATION An interactive land transport gallery in collaboration with LTA and MOE to transform the railway station into an educational and social hub that caters to student and public. Gallery combined with a main food node is introduced from the main station extending to the platform. The main food node allows user to enjoy food of the bygone era. Therefore, the gallery inside, become ‘live’ as the users are in the gallery and they can witness the making of the food.

By having meaning of gathering and separation at the same time. The function of separation will take place within the spaces of gathering to cross the boundary of the perception of pause to different inhabitant. Gathering and separation are both ways to to pause the moment, therefore pockets of spaces of contemplation are scattered along the platform to allow users who want more solitude to separate themselves from the other.

“ To revitalize the railway station by transforming it into an educational and social hub that celebrates speed, progress and connectivity. ”

PROPOSED GENERAL LAYOUT PLAN

Through the notion of crossing boundary, spaces are created with restorative experience, where people are given free time, freedom to loiter, retracing of steps, the dreamy pause and to indulge in the long double-take. The configuration of the spaces are developed through the optimization of the railway track, which is the axis of the whole building. This creates a series of linear spaces that responds to the existing site configuration.

SECTION Y-Y

The spaces are articulated by projection and these projected spaces serve as a reminisce of the past train cabin where the users walking at the railway track turns into the scenery for the users. The intervention ensures the continuity of the rail corridor for its users, to allow users to experience the walk and embark on a trail to the other point.

– THE OLD MILL BAKERY – 2013

A TRADITIONAL WORKSHOP BAKERY

MAIN ENTRANCE

FIRST FLOOR - CAFE

Bread is staple and basic food. It has taken on significance beyond mere nutrition. It is often perceived as a symbol of sharing and discussion as people tear the bread and share it amongst themselves. The smell of bread itself also reminds people of home where they can just relax and have a sense of familiarity. The retail area will sell variety of bread s u c h a s s o u rd o u g h , l o a f , baguette, croissant and bun. Pastries, sandwiches and desserts will also be sold to complement the café function. There will be workshops to teach people to make bread to encourage bonding between the participants , the high tea trend that is getting increasingly popular will also be incorporated into the café as part of the strong selling point.

– THE OLD MILL BAKERY – 2013

The whole design idea is about the basic element of baking where it is very traditional-like as it involves the sense of making something with hand and being able to appreciate the smell and the interaction between the bread and the maker. When the ingredients are all mixed together, they intersect each other and liquid substance bonded them all together. Hence, this became the main principle of the design.

SECOND FLOOR - CAFE

FUN WORKSHOP

The space is also semi-connected to the cafe area and the transparency allows the connection between the two spaces. The unique activity of experimenting with ingredients is the main essence of the space. People who want to kill time and relax in the bakery would also be able to use the cafe area at the second floor

– THAT MAKAN LAB – 2012

A FUSION OF TEST KITCHEN, EXHIBITION AND RESIDENTIAL SPACE Designed for K.F. Seetoh, a renowned food critic. The project aims to bring his hobby, photography and his profession together in a space. Feature wall made of timber strips create visual connectivity between the spaces. The timber strips only allow certain view at different angles, converting private to semi-private space and function as display rack for the client’s photography works. Recreating the traditional feeling of Asian hawker foods. By taking this thought into consideration, a very laid back, rustic and comfortable space is designed by bringing in elements like natural light and materials such as wood, brick and concrete. To achieve all this, spaces of heightened sensory experience (visual, smell) are introduced.

KITCHEN

Double volume kitchen overlooks the exterior and provides visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces. This will enable the passerby to know what is happening in the interior spaces and evoke their curiosity.

– THAT MAKAN LAB – 2012

The dining area at both 1st and 2nd floor will have dual function, as exhibition and dining space. Users of the space will be able to enjoy the photography works by the client. WATCHTOWER

Attempting to integrate the shape with the original pavilion, geometrical shapes are infused in the design. There will be 4 levels where the first level starts at the same level as the pavilion’s second level. Rhythm can be found in the shape of the spaces where the first floor starts with a quarter of square , second level with half a square, third level with three quarter of square and finally last level a full square. The third level have an overhang which functioned as the viewing deck while the top floor’s functioned as sky deck
