College Rave is a magazine created by Angella Smith which highlights some social and educational events that took place on the UWI Mona Campus. These events will take place between the months of January to April; this will be the second school semester. This magazine will include pictures taken by writer and editor Angella Smith and also pitures taken from https://www.facebook.com/UWISnapshots. The magazine cover was inspired by the Jamaica carnival but it went well as the month of March showcased many events that led up to the UWI carnival. The image on the cover was taken by STUSH entertainment and permission was given to use the picture by my cousin as it is a picture of her. credits goes to STUSH and Kerry-kay Leon.

Soca Sip Ultimate Carnival Experience Take the “Soca Sip” experience to a whole new level.

Soca Sip the ultimate carnival experience........ Soca Sip was held at the Students Union on February 8, 2014 this was sponsored by Red-Stripe. This party is among many including Adrinaline which will take place on the 21st of February at the UWI sand pit, these parties will “kick start” the UWI Mona carnival which will be held on March 14th-16th. Soca Sip had a huge turn out, the essence of this party was that females had to get as much party beads as they could, this was done by dancing with males who had the beads. If you missed Soca Sip look out for the UWI carnival which will take off on Thursday March 14th at the Students Union. Thursday nights are usually for integraton and it will proceed as follows, students with UWI ID will enter for free and those without ID will pay $100 to enter.

UWI Homecoming Celebration

The UWI Homecoming Celebration held on Feburary 9-14, 2014 took place on the UWI Mona campus. This celebration was open to all students who attend UWI Mona campus. The event was full of excitement and the comng together of the whole UWI family. On the final day which I personally covered, they had the Homecoming parade which started at the Union and ended at the Administration block. the parade was filled with students enjoying themselves, dancing, singing and having the time of their lives. The parade had cars which were carrying the Miss UWI Beauty Queen and other members

of different pageants that took plac on the UWI campus Campus. Truck loads of students attended the parade and as far as I could see the parade had a good turn out even though I am sure it could have been better.

Females of Irvine Hall shows what they are made of

Champion Alpha (Block A Irvine Hall) is believed to be one of the most dominant female blocks on the University of the West Indies, Mona. This is often attributed to our endless vibes and outgoing personalities. We are currently the host of a number of events earning their place on the Guild of Students’ calendar including our annual Fish Fry, our Bingo Bash and our top event Girlz Graduation (Girlz Grad). Girlz Graduation is an entertaining and vivacious theme oriented party which is used to provide students with a means to reunite with each other after the Christmas break and to serve as an avenue for retreat from a long week of academic focus. Profits made will enable us to provide subsidies for our block members on a number of items, and part proceeds are in aid of our community outreach efforts. We also make a sizeable donation to the Irvine Hall needy students’ fund; which is a student initiative to help other university students with financial difficulties. Girlz Graduation is anticipated by university masses each year, being the most attended female event of its type on campus and as such we would like you to be our title sponsor. A new theme is chosen every year in an effort to generate a rejuvenated interest in our patrons which has proven to keep them captivated by and absorbed in the product we offer. This year’s theme will be “ANYTHING BUT CLASS”. Last year’s staging saw a great turn out of enthusiastic patrons. On average the number of patrons attending the event each year is 700. This can be attributed to our approach of new themes, DJs and captivating features each year.

February 19-21

Dub Poetry at its finest

Research day took place on the UWI Mona campus on February 19th 2014. Research day began with a tour of the campus where students from different school took part in. Many of thes schools nclude: Iona High School, Mary Mount, Immaculate Conception High, Manchester High, Norman Mandley High and even ST. Peter’s and Paul Prep school was there. Research brought out children of all ages. Though Reasearch day took place for three days I however, covered two day for the purpose of this article. Thursday 20th and Friday, February 21st, 2014 which marked the end of research day, this day was filled with different funfilled events. on Thursday many booths were set up around the UWI campus to facilitate the different faculty programs offered by the university. The undercroft was used for the lunch hour concert, the tent to the rightt of the undercroft was used to show case different institutions and projects and it was also used to facilitate the grand finale concert where NOMADDZ ended research day on Friday 21st.

NOMADDZ

11 The second day of research day show cased the dfferent faculties of the University. By the faculty of Humanities they show cased, the History and Archaeology and the Language department.

12 Humanities faculty also had on sale Jamaican traditional pastries such as coconut drops, pineapple tarts etc. After seeing what the faculty of humanities had to offer I then went over to the Undercroft where they were having the Lunch hour concert and HIV test was been done in the assembly hall. In the tent immediately to the right of the Undercroft the show cased other faculties such as Social Science. Below are pictures of the lunch hour concert and some of what took place inside the tent.

13 On the finale day, there was a book lanch held by Dr.Gosse, Lecturer of History. Amoung the guest that attended this event was the High Commissioner of South Africa. The event though highly informative did not have a large turn out but it was successful. After the Book launch the finale day concert took place where NOMADDZ performed. The concert had a huge turn out. It was held in the tent and there was no room availabe in the tent after NOMADDZ started to perform so for those who came late they had to stand on the outside. The dub poetry of NOMADDZ encapsulated the crowd and they went wild.. They ended Research day with a BANG!!
