FRIDAY ARENA HOSTS CONTINUED ... TERRACE

Being the brainchild of Pete Jordan, the first night in February 2001 at the Beatroot Club in Nottingham, saw 450 people dancing to a little known brand of dance music that at that point was considered by many to be just a backroom thing. Unashamedly pushing breakbeat into the main room Spectrum soon became the clubbers choice in the East Midlands winning over new fans to the music and of course the unique Spectrum party style.

From early beginnings as an underground craze manifesting itself in seedy clubs and at chaotic gatherings in fields around London's M25 motorway, Fantazia has come a long, long way.

As the name would suggest, it was never about pigeon holes, and the insistence of keeping things varied (across all rooms and all sets) guaranteed an interesting night of music. Now based at GatecrasherLovesNottingham after 4 years at Stealth Nottingham, two years at The Bomb and one at Beatroot. The night continues to pull in crowds of upto and over a thousand on a regular basis. Such is the popularity of Spectrum and three Breakspoll Awards for Best Club Event have been the highlight of many awards.

From these small beginnings Fantazia have grown to become the worlds most respected party organisation, promoting events that attract massive audiences, at both indoor and outdoor locations and becoming the first in the world to organise a dance-party for over 25,000 people . Using the most up-to-date and exciting attractions ever seen (state-or-the-art computer animated graphics, laser technology, pyrotechnics, 3D projections and advance water technology alongside the most outlandish performers available) the parties became legendary with the nations youth.

Gone is the constant battling with police and local authorities, gone are the furtive phone calls from Britain's youth to find a party's destination hours before it was due to begin.

THE PRODI GlobalGathering present yet another groundbreaking act as headliner for this year's festival, THE PRODIGY. The all action rave group will take centre stage with their adrenaline fueled, no nonsense style for the very first time.

In their first year together The Prodigy already realised their initial main goal, to perform at the infamous Raindance in London's East End. Their debut album 'Experience' was met with both revere and acclaim by ravers and critics alike. This followed a year in which The Prodigy hit the charts with a loud bang, by this time everyone was sitting up and taking note. The ever narrowing confines of the rave scene had been well and truly broken. At a time when The Criminal Justice Act was threatening to kill the rave scene, The Prodigy were taking their music to a whole new audience. Their second album

'Jilted Generation' was a large nod towards their newfound stardom within the Rock community where they found themselves headlining festivals around the world, surrounded entirely by non-electronic acts including the likes of Oasis. Perhaps their most defining moment came in 1996 when they released 'Firestarter' onto the world. At first this was met by radio stations with caution, dubbed as too 'abrasive for daytime play' it was eventually unleashed onto the mainstream and went straight in at Number 1. Followed up quickly by 'Breathe' and 'Smack My Bitch Up', The Prodigy's reputation went through the roof. They quickly became an institution with the new generation of clubbers. Fat Of The Land will go down in history as one of the most influential albums of all time, up there with 'Never Mind The Bollocks', 'What's The

Story' and 'Nevermind' - it still remain fastest selling albums of all time. Fas 2005 and The Prodigy return with ano hit album, 'Always Outnumber Outgunned' was an unsuspecting pow sleazy electro trash that laughed in the people who had pronounced the

Orbital's live shows became infamous, not just for their unique pop-dance sound but also for their choice of imagery and mixing of visuals, something that had not been seen thus far on the electronic scene. Their first release, 'Chime' originally sold 1,000 copies immediately through word of mouth alone and was later picked up by the seminal FFrr record label, with which it became a nationwide anthem. Over a decade later and 'Chime' is still regarded as a classic and is often sampled or bootlegged to this day. Since then Orbital have released a plethora of critically acclaimed albums - initially untitled LP's and a catalogue of dancefloor hits including 'Belfast' and possibly their most recognisable track, 'Halcyon'. Such was the depth of their musical spectrum, in 1995 they also released their remix of Madonna's 'Bedtime Stories' and recorded a track for one of Sony Playstation's early games 'WipEout'. Headline performances at Tribal Gathering and on

Glastonbury's hallowed main stage soon followed and Orbital quite literally had the world at their feet. May 1996 saw the pair embark on their first UK tour for over two years which ended on new years eve with them playing to over 12,000 people at Alexandra Palace. A 6th and penultimate album, 'The Altogether' was released in 2001 along with their first DVD and a UK tour including 2 shows at Brixton Academy and a headline appearance at Homelands. Their final performance came in 2004, live on the late John Peel's Radio One show, a month after their final studio LP, the 'Blue Album' was released.

GlobalGathering proudly present one of the most innovative acts on today's scene to headline the festival for 2009. Formed in their home town of Perth in 2002, Pendulum initially took the Drum & Bass scene by storm with such hits as Tarantula and Blood Sugar becoming instant crowd favourites up and down the country. Their roots are spread across many genres from D&B, Breakbeat and Hardcore to Metal and Punk, creating one of the most unique acts in recent memory. Their debut artist album 'Hold Your Colour' included remixes for all conquering rave legends, The Prodigy and sold over 100,000 units whilst being playlisted and regularly featured on BBC Radio 1. During this time Pendulum were touring the world as DJs but made the decision to take things to the next level by performing live. Pendulum retreated back underground and into the studio to concoct new music, new material and most importantly a whole new outlook for the band. They see their music as an escape, taking influences from bands including Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queens Of The Stone Age and more.

Fed up of hearing others try (and fail) to bridge the gap between Electronic and Indie/Rock, Pendulum took it upon themselves to create the music they so badly wanted to hear. In their own words: "If you turn on the radio today you'll hear 20 tracks in a row describing someone's every-day life, or songs with a one line catchphrase chorus about shaking your ass in a club - the production is usually great but when you look deeper, there's nothing behind it......it doesn't offer you anything past its face value" It is this mindset that has launched Pendulum onto a whole new platform now with sellout live performances nationwide including a huge appearance at the recent Radio One's Big Weekend in 2008. Whilst this talented quartet continue to produce new music, one thing is for sure, boundaries are going to be broken, expect the unexpected.

CARL COX A musical ambassador since he was in short trousers, a professional DJ since his early teens, a veteran of acid house and a champion of techno, Carl Cox emits a love of his work that is dangerously infectious. Check him when he's behind the turntables and you can't mistake his ecstatic visage, dripping with sweat as his head bobs up and down to the beat, his hands pumping the air whenever they're not manipulating the turntables, his body swaying back and forth, frequently taking to the mike to share word on the latest underground tune he's about to break. You name it, Carl's been there and done it, but he's never lost sight of the point of it: playing music, breaking tunes, spreading love, celebrating life.

As a founder of the sound, Carl rode the exploding British rave scene. He played the opening night of Danny Rampling's legendary Shoom, co-promoted The Project with Paul Oakenfold, held a residency at the Zap Club in Brighton and at the Sunrise rave in 1988, hooked up a third turntable for his dawn-breaking set, got 15,000 kids back on their feet, and established a personal rep for three-deck wizardry. Carl’s dedication to giving the fans something more than a man and two turntables is clearly one reason he constantly given headline status alongside the elite of artists around the world still to this day

There are DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are dance acts that can write songs that will bring out the goose bumps in you. But there’s only one band that can do both: Above & Beyond. This three-piece have remixed Madonna, won Essential Mix of the Year, and headlined in front of one million people in Rio de Janeiro

ABOVE & BEYOND

ERIC PRYDZ Eric Prydz is on a roll at the moment, his labels are positively brimming with underground club hits. Eric is now in charge of three highly respected labels whose releases are in feverish demand, consistently selling huge quantities of vinyl which is truly incredible in the markets current climate.

There are few DJs in the world that create the reaction that David Guetta sparks. Whether it’s 50,000 fans singing along to his hit records at the recent massive Stade De France stadium Unighted über-party, or dark rooms of clubbers locked in the groove nine hours into his set, Guetta gets passions flowing. That’s because he uniquely and boldly treads a tightrope most DJs wouldn’t dare to traverse: the line between being an underground DJ and having huge crossover success. That might not sound like two worlds that go together, but David flits between French prime-time TV appearances, deep sets at Space Miami and producing music that appeals to clubbers and also way beyond with apparent ease. That he won a World Music Award and was voted the best house DJ in the DJmag Top 100 in the same year is a credit to his ability to work in both of these seemingly disparate worlds. “I’m not trying to be credible,” David admits with a smile broadening across his soft, open face. “I’m trying to be incredible. It’s very easy to be underground because you just have to obey a set of codes. It’s very formulaic. But it’s also very easy to be totally pop, because it’s very formulaic too. I’m trying to do something different.” One of his favourite gigs was during his phenomenal US tour. After playing three hours of his biggest and best at Crobar Miami he dived over to Space to go deep for another six hours. “Playing those two gigs was like the two basics of DJing,” he explains, “the raw energy of super dynamic mixes and party tracks for Crobar, and taking people on a trip with long, deep mixes at Space.” It’s not uncommon for David to stay on the decks after he’s thrown down his big party set so he can play all the other records that he adores. After a couple of hours of big drops, singalongs, arms in the air, screaming and accapellas being sliced and diced, he’s got the crowd where he wants them and for the next one, two, three hours he’s going to take them on a groove. “And that’s the part I love most!” he laughs. And that’s the thing about Guetta, he’s really not about the cash, or the glamour or the pop star life. A much softer, more emotional and easy going man some of the press want him to be. He doesn’t want to dazzle people, he wants to touch them.

John Digweed is a DJ's DJ. The beauty of what he does lies in just how different he really is from his contemporaries. From his early beginnings in Hastings, England at the age of 15 in the blossoming scene of acid house to the apex of the international dj'ing world, he has created and maintained a level of integrity that is the benchmark for both djs and producers globally. In fact, he has reached the very top of his profession, being voted ..1 in a voter's poll by DJ magazine in 2001. John Digweed has become the peoples choice while maintaining his longstanding presence in underground dance culture. His popularity as both a dj and a person seems to have no limits, but his efforts transcend dj'ing alone, he is as much a producer and promoter. His moniker Bedrock is actually three things: a record label, a promotions company and a studio production partnership (with Nick Muir). He is centered to the principles of life, living and friends in such a way that he generates an aura of self-explanatory excitement and enthusiasm. Without heroic pretensions his sets are filled with moodiness and musical mystery but held down with a punchy distinctiveness and earthly rhythm. Always emanating a sense of boundlessness he overlaps dream events that spill into reality with an enormous certainty.

Multi-talented DJ/producer/remixer SASHA is recognized as one of the worlds’ most innovative icons of the electronic genre. He propels listeners into the future of electronic music by constructing innovative and forward-thinking concept albums (Airdrawndagger, Involver) and live events (Delta Heavy, Fundacion) that blur the boundaries between artist and DJ. In 2004 his work on Involver was nominated for a Grammy Award. Refusing to limit himself to DJ work, Sasha has continually explored his various interests as an adept remixer, songwriter, and producer. He established himself as a formidable, in-demand remixer by reconstructing tracks from an incredible array of artists such as Depeche Mode, Madonna, Seal, UNKLE, The Chemical Brothers, BT, Thom Yorke, and Orbital.

Canada's Richie Hawtin has made his mark on electronic music by being both inventive and innovative. As a teenager Hawtin found inspiration to make music from a combination of techno music from Detroit, his father's record collection and an obsession with computers, video games and science fiction.

It may be hard for Axwell to top the success and personal highs of 2008, but one things for sure the talented producer will certainly try. As part of the illustrious 'Swedish House Mafia', Axwell has been responsible for numerous dancefloor hits and his Axtone imprint gains support from all major players around the world.

AXWELL There are few artists that can lay claim to conquering the underground as well as the mainstream, yet Ali 'Dubfire' Shirazinia has managed to dominate both. In fact, he's setting the musical agenda for others to follow in his footsteps.

STEVE ANGELLO Steve’s highly charged sets have scored him thousands of adoring fans around the World! Djing every weekend non-stop for the last 12 months, his diverse sets keep the crowds electrified, and no matter how many times you see him play, you will rarely hear the same track twice!

Have you heard the one about Erol Alkan? The humble 12 year old maestro-in-the-making who sneaks out the window of his parents flat to play gigs for a tenner? About the bearded studio-sorcerer worshipped by bands and DJ’s half his age as a living electronic idol?

EROL ALKAN It could be said Fedde came out of nowhere, riding off the success of a hit record. Well, to set the record straight; this couldn’t be further from the truth. Le Grand has spent the majority of his earlier youth grafting, spinning records in his Native country and cutting tracks until the inevitable happened.

JAMES ZABIELA Knowing what a great track should sound like - and the place it can be taken by warping and twisting it - is James Zabiela's forte. Layering different sounds with the aid of two Pioneer CDJ-1000s, a Pioneer EFX-1000, Korg Kaossilator, MIDI controller and a laptop, his hands and ears don't let up for a second, leaving any punters feet a-moving and mouth a-gap.

Kleinenberg is not only an artist who declines to stick to a single, easily defined sound, he also utilizes more than one medium to create a night out. Long at the forefront of integrating video imagery and other visuals in his VDJ sets, Sander includes Pioneer among his sponsors for these innovative performances.

SANDER KLEINENBERG TIGA As you know, my remix work has slowed considerably as of late. While my versions of tracks by Alter Ego, New Young Pony Club, The Gossip and Human League have only enhanced my reputation as the Sex Whiz of Sonic Parkour, I felt I needed to start hoarding my best ideas for my own music.

MARCUS SCHULZ

Markus Schulz is a man on a mission. He dreams of meeting the world. This dream just might be possible. Over the past three years, Markus has crossed the globe on an almost constant basis. From Australia to Russia and as far away as China and Trinidad. Along with playing his hometown of Miami.

SANDER VAN DOORN The astonishing rise of Sander van Doorn isn’t really so astonishing really when you consider the staggering amount of talent flowing through his veins. In just 5 years he’s clocked up more hit records, dance floor destroyers and sell out gigs than most DJs do in a lifetime, and his journey is still in its infancy.
