‘La Florida’ cohousing Renovation of an old block. Housing cooperative with commercial and productive spaces in the city center

Date: year 2015-16 Type: master thesis project Location: old block ‘la Florida’, Seville (Spain) Program, area: housing, productive areas and public space, 12000 m2 Institution: ETSA University of Seville Tutor: Marta Pelegrín Grade: outstanding (9/10) Software: Allplan, Rhino, V-Ray, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Cypecad, Cypecad MEP

Housing in the XXI century In Seville, in the old block known as ‘la Florida’ it is proposed the re-habilitation of this urban enclave through a sustainable cooperative housing project. The most singular characteristics of the lot are its triangular perimeter and the island situation with respect to the urban context. Due to this, the project solution seeks to optimize the volume of the building to accommodate the housing and productive program areas, using as project strategy a central space of collective character around which the multiple activities of its inhabitants will be carried out throughout the day. In this way, the building preserves the preexisting facade and grows inside. The north and west volumes adopt the maximum height allowed and include the collective and private housing program, while the southeast volume has a lower height and receives part of the program of productive spaces, which is also distributed around the rest of the ground floor. This form is broken in the east vertex, giving its interior to the city. Thus, the block typology with galleries for the two residential modules gets better orientation, while the coworking space gains independence and the different gradients of collective space allow the flexibility of use. The versatility of the program supports the sustainability of the proposal, generates alternatives to the obsolete real estate market and helps to create city and regenerate the socio-economic activity.

‘Inefable’ Arquia XVII contest: a place of silence in the overwhelming city Regarding the new proposal for the urban context of Plaça Glòries in Barcelona, it is proposed to design a space of meditation and calm, isolated from the speed and bustle of the big city, in order to place the visitor in a sensitive spiritual situation and favor a physical experience of sensory transformation.

A secular chapel The project proposes not to interrupt the concept of urban canopy continuity that is going to be developed in the area. For this purpose the project buried itself, looking for the primitive man’s hut: the cave. As the hermits of the antiquity did, the ground is carved looking inside the earth for a place to reach the heaven. It is a stereotomic architecture, which seeks contact with the elemental. This anti-speed capsule is hidden under the hostility of the city and isolated from all those agents of distraction that prevent us from connecting with ourselves in our days. Looking for recognizable proportions, the diameters of the ring hallway and the apse of Sta Maria del Mar church are adopted and transposed to the place, forming a buried spherical dome where is acceded descending. By two helical ramps, the spirit is gradually prepared to get in touch with himself, arriving to a place of reflection which is mysteriously perceived from the outside. This architectural ritual immerses the individual in a perceptual mood: in the fragility of the darkness broken by the light ray, the crypt hide what we are looking for: only space, silence, light, and ourselves. As in the Anselm Kiefer canvas ‘Die berühmten Orden der Nacht’, a place that contains the entire universe.

Entrepreneurship in the city In the city of Cordoba, in a privileged but not yet consolidated urban area, it is proposed a plan to develop a creative cultural hub that could take advantage of the existing cultural infrastructures and public space, in order to complement them with residential and productive facilities. With this goal, the project consider to promote the development of new companies based on creative and digital industries, which could help to regenerate the socio-economic system and also support the artists in the C3A Contemporary Art Centre. The shape of the site determines the typology of the building: an inner patio is broken by the geometry of spaces in order to distribute the functional program and provide the users with an open-air shaded place. The outgoing modules contain the flexible working environments and other services required for a business incubator.

‘Active bending pavilion’ ‘Transformables 2013’ contest: modular and lightweight construction system for temporary pavilions Proposal of material system, a project without definite place. A light construction, sustainable, recyclable, easily expandable and detachable. An industrialized system that allows adaptation to the required needs for multiple configurations of different program and scale.

Modular, lightweight, transformable The active bending principle takes advantage of the properties of elastic materials to generate curved geometries from straight elements. Its application permit the approach to new structural typologies, innovates in the use of materials and allows the section reduction of the resistant components. Thus, a flexible and efficient building system is designed for an architecture proposal in which form, structure and space are the same thing. The place is built through the combination of this modular system, through an organic methodology that shapes, in a responsive way to the physical environment, specific solutions, adaptable to the idiosyncrasy of any site. The transfer of materials from other industries, prefabrication and innovation in the processes allow a system of itinerant character with preestablished life cycle.

Axo. Design concept

angelpontes.eu/portfolio/end-award

Prototype. View of the design made in brushed aluminum

Formal simplicity The foundation ‘Desarrollo de la EnfermerĂa’ called a competition for the design of the prize to be delivered in future editions of the awards of its magazine. They were looking for an object of minimalist appearance with visual impact. In this sculptural proposal, the composition of the volume simply symbolizes the initials of the institution, synthesizing the characters E and D in a simplified but recognizable geometry, without impairing its easy apprehension at first sight. The design also allows a clear representation in flat logo format.

The award forms a solid piece of dynamic character, in which the circular arrangement and the slight rotation of the pieces, represent the concept of continuous development, positively transmitting the meaning of the prizes and the spreading purpose of the magazine, as well as the dual essence of professional practice and research in the field of nursing. The straightforward design has guaranteed its correct and affordable fabrication and allows its manufacture in different materials, fully satisfying the requirements of the customer.

‘One tree table’ RIVA1920 contest: design of a table made of ecological wood It is proposed the design of a table as a central piece of furniture, with portentous proportions and aesthetics.

Back to the roots The idea is simple: not to conceive a series of original products, but unique objects. Make each piece different, just as each tree differs from the next.

Diagram. Fabrication process

The proposal suggests a return to the origins, the traditional crafts, learn from the old masters but innovating in the manufacturing processes. Through simple operations, the tree trunk is cut into tables that become the tabletop, while the knot branches or the stem of the roots are transformed into the supporting foot. All parts are joined together by pressure joints made with wedge-shaped pieces of the same material, without adding other secondary materials or adhesives. That way it is a solid wood table that, conceptually, only consists of one single piece. The object is manufactured taking into account aesthetically important factors, such as the direction of the grain of the chosen oak wood.

University and city In the city of Seville, on a huge lot with an urban border situation, located between the railway line and Kansas City avenue, this large scale intervention provides an unitary response to the proposed university program. The project suggests an opportunity to gift the surrounding urban environment with a qualified public space, with intention to bring humanity and place to stay, trying to confine itself from the impact of the adjacent transport routes.

Axo. Urban scale of the project in relation to the built environment

That way, the proposal tries to turn its back on the railways while opening to the front neighborhood, accommodating in its interior a large scale atrium which invites to enter from the public main square access. The functional program of the building is solved by conventional typology of classroom span, establishing the composition on a structural modulation that could allow flexibility of use in the future. The module is applied on facades too. It has a strong formal character but is also responsive to the environment, protecting the interior space from direct radiation by vertical slats with considerable dimensions.

Space and material In the scope of the research ‘deep surface morphologies’, carried out at the ICD and ITKE institutes at the University of Stuttgart, about innovative space systems based on the use of new materials and computational design, the design of an architectural device is proposed to be inserted in an old fortified tower which design is attributed to L. da Vinci. Thus, the project is based on a lightweight intervention that qualifies the interior space of the existing massive construction, establishing a nexus between both opposed material systems. The device results in a combination of systems of different scales based on the principle of active bending applied on elastic materials. So it adjusts to the interior geometry of the tower, only seeking the minimum points of support to implant a structure that endows the original construction with exhibition functions, also implementing material shortcomings in an economic and non-permanent way.
