Minimal Letterforms
For this project, I closely examined the form and function of letterforms and the aspect of composition by playing with positive and negative space. Out of the six typefaces Centaur, Memphis, Garamond, Helvetica, Bodoni, Friz, and Quadrata, I picked Memphis because I liked its round and unique terminals, such as the round terminal for the lowercase letter ‘r’ Also, its unbracketed serifs are bold and heavy looking. I developed sketches by hand at reduced size. I explored both uppercase and lowercase. Out of all the letters, I found ‘r’ and ‘d’ as the letters I want to incorporate in my final design. I was drawn to those two letters because they have unique character and legibility. They also capture the font’s unique visual qualities.

On the left are four of my favorite compositions created in InDesign. I love how the terminal or the ‘r’ is dropping into the opening of the leffer below it, creating a nice visual hierarchy. The ‘g’ and ‘q’ also creates a continuous connection with ‘d’.

Minimal Letterforms Final The final product is composed of Memphis Bold letters: d, r, g, p. Refinements and production in Adobe Illustrator. Print in black and white on high quality 11 x 17 paper, then trim and flush mount to 11 x 14 Bristol.

Type Hierarchy Studies
First, I begin with one size and one weight of Univers (15pt Univers 45). I printed out the information and cut out each individual information to align them in different ways to see what is the best way to show the information the most effectively. As the assignment progresses, additional elements and variations of type were added to make it more comples.

The Type Hierarchy Studies provides a set of information and my job is to create new layouts for this same set of information. This project let me explore some visual principles such as symmetry, asymmetry, grouping, isolation, contrast, and grid structures.

Set 3B
Instead of cutting and pasting, I was able to try a different start method for set 2 and 3 by drafting directly with InDesign. I crated 3 drafts for each sets (2A, 2B, 3A, 3B) On the bottom right are cut out drafts for Set 1. I cut out the texts and kept on rearranging them so they are eye-catching and demonstrates organization. Then I glued the pieces down on tracing paper. The top first row are drafts I did for set 2A on InDesign. The second row are drafts I did for set 3B on InDesign.

Book Design
This book allowed me to demonstrate my ability to organize supplied texts and images from Paul Rand’s Design and the Play Instinct. This book design incorporated all I have learned through out this course. I chose an 8 x 8 size for my book and for the grid, I made it into 3 columns as shown on the right. Originally I was going to make it into 2 columns but after trying that, the texts seemed too boring. With 3 columns, it makes the page more playful and less boring. There are a total of 3 fonts in this book - Bauhaus 93, Bondoni Poster Compressed and Helvetica Neue Light. Helvetica was used for information texrs. Bauhaus 93 was the typeface for the apostrophes and comma on the cover and reference page. Bondoni was used for each title. In the end, binding the book was a difficul task becuase it was my first time but it was not too hard. It required Now, I have gained a new skill. Overall, I am happy with how my book came out.
Bauhaus 93 Bondoni (Poster Compressed) Helvetica Neue (Light) 11
I made 2 designs for the cover. The fist design was inspite by the previous proect - Type Hierarchy Studies. The second one consists of apostrophe (‘) and comma (,) in the typeface Bauhaus 93. I enlarged it to 1200 font size and arranged them at top left and bottom right corner. I then added the title in typface Bodoni Poster Compressed. At first I was going to leave it in black and white but decided to explore some colors - pink and teal to make it look more playful. I really liked the second design because it it bold and unique. The apostrophe and comma added character to the cover page. I tried to incorporate these symbols through out my book by using them as quotation marks, background of text box, and decorations. The final design cover color, I picked C=69 M=0 Y=34 K=0 I used this color through out my book design since it is more of a cool tone.
12
Above was my first digital draft on InDesign, after critique, I was able to make the title of each page consisten by using the same color and font and symmetrical locations as seen on my final design on the bottom.
