THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEG Over the past three years, PSC has partnered with university clients and employee volunteers to host the Annual Earth Day RecycleNow Event. We have collected over 50 tons of electronic waste from their communities and have donated $30,000 to support sustainability initiatives. PSC has invested heavily in technology to streamline our service routes, and improve our billing and interface with clients. This has reduced the consumption of fuel, electricity and paper. At the core is a self-assessment at the beginning of every task that requires each employee to ask, “What is the worst thing that could happen to me as I do this task?” As simple as that sounds,2 being continually reminded of the pitfalls and hazards of almost any task can keep us focused on producing good results. The concept can apply to a financial analysis, an employee counseling session or a complex operation of cleaning a tank. Employees are empowered to become loss preventions experts. THE SOCIAL LEG Our employees are crucial to the success of our company’s sustainability program. Our Green Team is comprised of volunteers willing to learn about sustainability issues and make improvements at their locations. Monthly webinars are available for employees to learn more about a variety of issues including recycling, energy conservation and financial incentives. Each month we honor employees who embody the principles of sustainability with the Sustainable Living Recognition. PSC implemented the Sustainable Living Recognition program to honor employees who positively impact any of the three legs: economic, social or environmental. Employees are nominated by their peers and the winner is selected by members of the Sustainability Team. PSC, through the Arbor Day Foundation, plants 10 trees in each of the winner’s names.

THE ECONOMIC LEG Sustainability is green, as in cash. International sustainability expert, Bob Willard, notes that large sized companies can potentially increase profit by 38% when integrating a solid sustainability program. How? Sustainability helps companies grow in market share, improve community relations, increase productivity, initiate market innovation, promote positive brand image, lower employee turnover rates and increase employee satisfaction. For example, in 2010, PSC’s Green Team saved $169,000 in energy costs!
