As International President of the Sheep Dog Trials for 2012, I would like to extend a very warm Welsh welcome to all competitors and spectators to Wales, and in particular to the Vale of Glamorgan, for the 2012 International Sheep Dog Trials.
The International Sheep Dog Trials is one of many compelling events taking place across Wales this year supported by the Welsh Government. It is a unique cultural event that takes place annually, but only visits Wales every four years, and is the pinnacle in the sheep dog trialling calendar where the title ‘International Supreme Champion’ is awarded. I'm delighted that a community in the Vale of Glamorgan is playing host to an event that aims to attract thousands of visitors to the area and the impact of this competitive environment will, without doubt, resonate far and wide...
Rwy’n falch iawn fod cymuned ym Mro Morgannwg yn croesawu digwyddiad a fydd yn ceisio denu miloedd o ymwelwyr i’r ardal. Yn ddiamau bydd yr awyrgylch cystadleuol yn cael cryn effaith yn lleol a thu hwnt...
I would like to extend my best wishes to the organisers, the competitors and to each and every visitor for what promises to be a spectacular event.
Hoffwn estyn fy nymuniadau gorau i’r trefnwyr, y cystadleuwyr ac i bob ymwelydd ar gyfer digwyddiad heb ei ail.

Thank you to our hosts, Tudor and Janet Harris, who have welcomed the International on to their farm.
The Welsh President, Malcom Ellis, has not enjoyed the best of health during the last few months and we wish him well and thank him for his term of office which will come to an end in the autumn.
We have expanded the trials to include a Food and Country festival to attract a wider audience and thank you to all who have supported. All this and more would not have been possible without the financial support of many local businesses, friends, companies and to our main sponsors The Welsh Government, The Vale of Glamorgan Council and Tesco. Message from Our National President Malcolm Ellis I am honoured to have been President for the last four years and it is with great pride I welcome you all here to the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan for the climax of my term of office at the 2012 International Trials.
We held a successful Welsh National Trial here some years ago and are delighted to return to Redland Farm for this year’s International. I would like to sincerely thank Mr and Mrs Tudor Harris and family for hosting this wonderful event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the local committees who have organised the four previous Welsh Nationals for their great help and support. Thanks too to Meirion Owen and Helen Howells for their work organising and securing funding for this International, and also those who organised events to raise funds or made donations.
Special thanks to Alun Jones (Selatyn) for his considerable support throughout my term of office. I wish him every success as he starts his term as National President for Wales. Many thanks too to E.L Morgan for his support. I also appreciate the help and support of the Society Chairman, Mr Jim Easton; Chief Executive, Judith Sheen, and the staff at the Bedford office. Last, but by no means least, I thank my wife and family for being there through every experience good and not so good.
Finally, good luck to all the competitors. Have a great three days!

Message from Our Local Secretary Mrs Helen Howells Welcome to this year’s International. When I was asked to be the local secretary I happily accepted the role, not realising quite how much work it entailed! However, with the help of some very knowledgeable and experienced people we are finally here at The International Sheep Dog Trials, Food and Country Festival 2012. I am especially proud the event is being held at Redlands; my family home. Welcome to my home. I hope you will Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring.
Many thanks to the local committee for their help, especially to Meirion and Angie who have supported and guided me through the last two years. Not forgetting, of course, my very easy-going husband, Dai, also our Vice Chairman, who has been very patient whilst I have been stressing with the preparations! Finally, I hope that everyone enjoys this year’s International and I wish all the competitors the very best of luck!

OUR HOSTS - Tudor and Janet Harris, Redland Farm, Bonvilston, Cardiff
The 2 012 International i s being hosted by ki nd permission of Tudor and Janet Harris. Tudor Harris was born and raised in Llantrisant, not far from Redland Farm. He farmed with his parents on a rented farm, milking 30 cows and rearing 150 sheep. Aged 17, Tudor joined Llantrisant Young Farmers Club and competed in stockjudging and shearing. He won the Royal Welsh shearing competition at 19 and, to generate extra income, became a contract shearer for 20 years.
In 1974, Tudor married Janet and moved to a small holding of 32 acres in Welsh-St-Donats. He started a 'pick your own potatoes' business, The Super Spuds, in the late 1970s on two acres of land during a time when potato prices plummeted. The money raised from this enabled him to buy several pieces of ground. At 47, Tudor purchased the 262-acre Redland farm and over the next 10 years, he and his family (now five strong with the addition of children Richard, Sally and Helen) built that up to the current 500 acres, a 500 ewe flock of Suffolk cross Welsh Mountain sheep as well as a pedigree Suffolk and Blue Faced Leicester flocks and 50 commercial cows, and they also have two holiday cottages. He won the championship with the Bluefaced Leicesters at the Royal Welsh Show in 2003 and recently retired as Chairman of the Wales and West Bluefaced Leicester Society.
points. In 2012, Tudor was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Agricultural Societies (FRAgS).
The 2012 International is truly a family affair. Tudor's and Janet's daughter, Helen (Howells), is the Secretary for the event and their son-in-law, David (Dai) Howells is Vice-Chairman (and accomplished sheepdog handler. Dai’s brother, Lyn, is a member of the 2012 Welsh team).
Dai and Helen tell us that training a sheepdog did not come naturally to Tudor and he had not been graced with good working dogs. Tudor was very happy when Helen met Dai, and it wasn't long before he bought his first well trained dog, Jess, from Dai. Along with Jess came the purchase of a pair of gloves with 'come bye' and 'away' on them, as Tudor could not quite master the commmands. Dai is still training Tudor. Sheepdog handling is one skill Tudor is happy to leave to the experts. Thank you Tudor and Janet for kindly hosting the 2012 International.
Janet and Tudor with Chloe, Evie and Jack
For the past 16 years Tudor has hosted point-to-point competitions (a form of amateur horseracing over fences for hunting horses) at Redland Farm. This is one of his hobbies, borne from his days as an amateur jockey. He hosts the Pentrych Hunt and the Countryside Alliance point to

THE FOUR NATIONAL TEAMS
The sixty (60) competitors in these Qualifying trials comprise teams of 15 from each of the nations of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Each team is led by a captain who was the winner of the National trial. All handlers are seeking to win individual awards, but there is also a strong desire to see their nation be successful in the team competition. The prestigious Team Shield and, now through the generosity of GIlbertson and Page, the Captain’s Trophy are much prized awards. The winning team is that which gains the highest number of points in the qualifying trials, being a total of the 12 highest scores from each team of 15 members.

Hazel Thomas Hazel currently works at the National Library of Wales on the People's Collection Wales project. She feels that her childhood living on a farm in West Wales influenced her choice of career as a professional chef. She grew up living and working the land with the animals as part of that lifestyle. At seventeen she embarked on a career in the catering industry by attending a professional Chef’s course at Westminster College in London. Her first job as a professional chef was at the Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane, where she became the first female Chef to be employed by Anton Mosimann. Although she has explored many different avenues in her professional career, food has always remained a passion and she has worked as an independent Food Photo © Claire Ward Consultant and Event Organiser for many years and was involved in both the International Sheep Dog Trials at Gelli Aur and the World Sheep Dog Trials at Llandeilo. Hazel was one of the six cooks to represent the Welsh Government in Washington during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2009 when Wales were the guest Nation.
Gloria Davies Gloria Davies lives on a farm in Ammanford. She started flower arranging when she was 16 through the YFC movement. She went on to study City and Guilds in Flower arranging and is a member of Swansea Floral Art Society. She passed her demonstrators test for the 3 Counties and South Wales area in 1996 and is now a highly respected flower arranger and demonstrator. She competed at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2000 and gained a medal under the title Stained Glass. She was invited by Channel 4's Howard Jacobson to exhibit at the Tate Gallery in London representing Wales where she created an innovative design in the Welsh colours.

QUALIFYING TRIALS COURSE
The following description is a simple guide to a trial course for spectators and those interested. A detailed set of Rules for Trials, set by the Directors of the ISDS, can be found on the ISDS website (see p27 of this programme for the link) and should be referred to by handlers. Distances are approximate and will be adjusted for the field in use by the Trials Committee. The Trials Committee is responsible for the course layout and conducting the trial in accordance with the Rules for Trials. The qualifying course involves the handler and dog working together to move five sheep (three unmarked and two marked with red collars) around a course. There are seven components of the course, each of which is scored by the judges.
1. Outrun: In the outrun the dog is sent out either to the left or right from the post while the handler remains at the post. The dog should not stop until it has reached the point of balance behind the sheep, and should be far enough away from the sheep so as not to disturb them. The point of balance is where the dog will lift the sheep in the direction of the first set of gates. 2. Lift: At the end of the Outrun, the dog will either come to a full stop or merely slow down. The dog will then approach the sheep smoothly, cautiously and steadily, taking control in a firm and quiet manner. The sheep should move in a direct line to the first obstacle (gates). 3. Fetch: The sheep must be brought at a steady pace and in a straight line from the place of lifting to the first gates and thereafter in a straight line to the handler/post. If the sheep deviate from the line they should be brought back to that line as soon as practical. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates is allowed. 4. Drive: The drive is approximately 450 yards long over a triangular course and consists of two sets of gates through which the dog drives the sheep. The drive starts immediately the sheep have passed behind the handler/ post and ends when the sheep enter the shedding ring. The sheep are required to go in straight lines between the obstacles and reasonable turns at the post and at both gates are expected. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, a second attempt at either gate is not allowed.
5. Shed: Two unmarked sheep are shed (separated) in the shedding ring and held away from the remaining three sheep. The dog must show control of the two unmarked sheep, either in or outside the ring. It is not a requirement for the sheep to be driven away.
6. Pen: On completion of the shedding the dog will reunite the sheep and the handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the sheep to the pen.The handler will stand at the gate holding the rope and must not let go of the rope while the dog works the sheep into the pen. When the sheep are in the pen, the handler must completely close the gate before releasing the sheep. After releasing the sheep, the handler must close and fasten the gate and go to the shedding ring. 7. Single: The dog brings the sheep from the pen to the shedding ring. One of two marked sheep will be shed (separated) within the shedding ring and held away from the remaining four sheep until the judges are satisfied.

T H E B R A C E C H A M P IO N S H I P 1. Gathering Ten (10) sheep will be placed approximately 600 yards from the handler. One dog is sent to the left and one to the right. Crossing at the completion of the outrun is permissible, but dogs should remain on the side to which they have crossed and they should not recross. The dogs should bring the sheep in a straight line through the centre gate (7 yards wide) 150 yards from the handler. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates is allowed. Each dog will keep to its own side until the fetch is finished. The handler will remain at the post and at the end of the fetch will pass the sheep behind him/her. 2. Driving The handler stands at the post and directs the two dogs to drive the sheep 450 yards over a triangular course through two sets of gates (7 yards wide), back to the handler. No re-try is allowed at either gate. Each dog is to keep to its own side and the handler must remain at the post until the end of the drive. The drive is finished when the sheep enter the shedding ring. In the case of a short course when the fetch is less than 600 yards, the drive will be lengthened when possible so that the total length of the fetch and drive is 1050 yards or as near to this length as is reasonably practicable. 3. Shedding The lot of 10 sheep will be divided into two equal groups by either dog inside the shedding ring. One group will then be driven off and left in the charge of one dog. 4. Penning The first lot will be penned in a diamond shaped pen by one dog. Once penned, this dog will be left in charge whilst the second lot are penned by the other dog in the other pen.

SUPREME CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE
Page 30
International Sheep Dog Trials 2012
THE SUPREME CHAMPIONSHIP Please note that the following is a simple guide for spectators and you should refer to the information at the top of the Qualifying Course description. The Supreme Competition is restricted to the 15 highest pointed dogs from the Qualifying Trials irrespective of Country or Class. The first outrun to be right or left as decided by the Trials Committee before the Trial and all competitors will run out on that side, the second outrun to be on the other side. The sheep are at a distance of about 800 yards. The first lot of 10 sheep should be brought through the gate (9 yards wide) to a post which is 20 yards through the gate. The first fetch is complete when the sheep have reached the turn back post. The dog having reached the post will then be suitably positioned to be redirected for the second lot of sheep (if possible unseen by the dog). The second lot of sheep should also be brought through the gate and united with the first lot. Should the gate be missed no re-try is allowed. At the end of the fetch the handler shall pass the sheep behind him/her.
GATHERING:
The drive shall be for 600 yards from where the handler stands in a triangular course through two gate obstacles (9 yards wide) back to the handler. The drive will be right or left as directed. Should the gates be missed no re-try is permitted at either gate. The drive should be in straight lines and ends when the first of the sheep enters the shedding ring. The Drive ends when all of the sheep enter the shedding ring. The handler will remain at the post until the first of the sheep is in the shedding ring.
DRIVING:
Fifteen (15) unmarked sheep are to be shed off within a ring 40 yards in diameter. In shedding, the sheep will be passed between the handler and the dog and the dog brought in to stop and hold the marked sheep. Should any marked sheep leave the shedding ring and join any unmarked sheep already shed off, the unmarked sheep with which the marked sheep has joined will be brought back into the ring and shedding resumed. Until the 15 unmarked sheep are shed off penning will not be permitted.
SHEDDING:
The pen will be 8 feet by 9 feet with a gate 8 feet wide to which is secured a rope 6 feet long. On completion of shedding, the handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the marked sheep to the pen. The handler is forbidden to assist the dog in driving the sheep to the pen. The handler will stand at the gate holding the rope and must not let go of the rope, while the dog manoeuvres the sheep into the pen. The handler must completely close the gate before releasing the sheep, then re-close and fasten the gate.
PENNING:
No points will be awarded for work done in the shedding ring or at the pen when either of these phases of the work has not been completed within the prescribed time limit.

The results will be announced during the prize giving at the conclusion of the competition. The competition will be decided using Merit Points.

Calculating Merit Points Each of the four judges will rank each competitor in order of Judges Points from 1st to 15th. The highest placed competitor (i.e. ranked 1st overall on Judges Points) will receive 15 Merit Points. The second placed competitor will receive 14 Merit Points, and so forth.
If a judge has awarded identical Judges Points to two different competitors, the Merit Points are summed and then divided evenly between the two competitors. For example, if the top two competitors receive the same Judges Points, the Merit Points for each competitor would be : 15 (for 1st place) + 14 (2nd place) ÷ 2 = 14.5 Merit Points each.
The sum of the Merit Points, calculated by each Judge for each dog, decides the final ranking with the highest number coming first. For example, if each Judge placed the same dog in top place it would receive (15+15+15+15) = 60 Merit Points, the maximum score possible.
In the event of Merit Points being equal for any dog the final order will be decided by the total number of Judges’ Points awarded. If these are equal then points on Outrun, Lift and Fetch added together will decide.

THE W I L K I N S ON S W O R D : R H Y S A N D R O Y J ON ES
The prestigious award for services to the International Sheep Dog Society, sheep dogs and trialling, the Wilkinson Sword, has this year been awarded to Roy and Rhys Jones, Llanafan, South Wales.
Roy & Rhys Jones are renowned for their long standing involvement in Sheep Dog Trials and exemplary service to the sheepdog community. Their farm, Llanafan Farm, which has been in the family for three generations and stocks beef cattle and Beulah Speckled Face ewes, is home to the Llanafan Show Sheep Dog Trials. This trial has been running for 123 years and offers one of the longest courses in the country. In 1980 Roy took over from his father as secretary of this trial.
Llanafan has also twice hosted the Welsh National; first in 1996 and again in 2009. Rhys and Roy were both key members of the organising committee for those Nationals, with Roy being Secretary for the 1996 National and Chairman in 2009. Roy and Rhys have also hosted the Welsh qualifier for the World Sheep Dog Trials, several Powys County Finals and South Wales Sheep Dog Trials Association Trials, All-Wales (North versus South) Nursery Trials and, in 2002, hosted the Royal Welsh Trials when they were unable to be held on the showground.
In addition to hosting trials at Llanafan, Roy and Rhys have, for a number of years, supplied sheep for the Royal Welsh Show and both enjoy competing in, and judging, trials. They are only too willing to help host or organise trials, and are well-known for going the extra mile to ensure trials run smoothly.
Along with wife, Jayne, and two children, Roy farms Llanafan in the same traditions of his parents and grandparents. Roy has been involved with sheep dogs since he can remember, and started trialling at 17 years of age. His greatest achievement to date has been qualifying to compete in the main ring of the Royal Welsh Show in front of the Queen in 1983. Roy enjoys participating in local trials and has also competed in the Welsh National, amongst other trials. He breeds an occasional litter of pups and and delights in working them in the nursery trials. Roy is well known around Llanafan for having his dogs in the trailer behind his quad bike.
Rhys farms his ‘share’ of Llanafan, under the new name of Brynafan, with his wife Heulwen, and has lived at Llanfan all his life. They have three children. Rhys started dog trialing when he was about 16. His father used to compete in sheep dog trials, South Wales style with Old English Sheepdogs. Rhys has been helping to organise sheep dog trials since his teenage years. The late Elvet Jones and Rhys set up a Christmas trial which ran for about 25 years at Llanafan. It was open to competitors living within a five mile radius and they used to run approximately 50 dogs. One year it was particularly foggy and the competitors could only see three quarters of the way up the course. So once the dogs had disappeared into the fog, the boys letting the sheep out at the top of the course would shout instructions to the competitors to guide their dogs to take the sheep back down the course until the competitors could see the dogs again! Rhys has also judged many competitions including the Welsh National held in Newport. Congratulations, Rhys and Roy. You are both very worthy recipients of the Wilkinson Sword.
