Colour Theories & Application
This exercise helps us to learn more about the various colour theories and how to apply them in our designs.

Mindmap 2
Mindmapping is a graphical and textual way to represent ideas and concepts. It is a visual thinking tool that helps to structure information, helping us to better analyze, comprehend, synthesize, and jog our creativity to recall and generate new ideas.

Mashup This artwork shows my love for music: djay-ing and creating mash-ups of songs, even compiling a playlist. So I took a turntable, an instrument that signifies club or dance music, took it apart, and mashed it up just like the music mashups I listen to. The red-orange anagolous colour scheme is applied to give a feeling of excitement to the postcard.

Stress I see stress as tension, strain, pressure, hence the frayed, breaking rope, hanging by a thread. The clenched teeth, visible veins represent human reaction to stress. Using green and red complementary colours, I tried to bring out the feelings of tension in this artwork.

Designer As a designer I feel that the most common tools I use are pencils, ruler, and a camera. This postcard simulates the use of rulers and pencils by a designer, hence the Black & white colour scheme and striaght lines. The use of a camera is also shown here through the effect of different camera lenses: Macro, telephoto and fisheye respectively. Notice that there are no numbers on the ruler. This is because we use the scale to measure, and not the numbers.

Barcode Rainbow Barcodes are random and unique, so am I. This barcode was generated randomly by hand, and painted in full colour. Full colour is applied to show that my vision of life is that it is very colourful. It should not be restricted to a few colours, shades, or tints.

Intepretation

1st Intepretation The first intepretation was for the colours of the print. The idea is to give a balanced warm and cold feeling to the print. Thus, complimentary colours were used to achieve this objective.

Sketches of the Owl-Snake The exercise was to create a 3D model of a fantasy creature that the student would want to be. This helps students to understand the basics of wire object making process. On the left are sketches of the proposed owl-snake idea.

Wire Frame
22
Wire Framing Using techniques and skills learned during the exercise, as well as research on the anatomy of owls and snakes, the owl-snake (named Hebirou) was formed from varying gauges of wire. The next step is to create skinning for the sculpture. Looking back at the anatomy of the owl and snake, 3 types of material can be used for the skinning: 1. Cotton wool for the owl’s body 2. Wire mesh for the snake’s scales 3. Thin wire to wrap around the wire mesh.

Story - Origins
The Story of Hebirou Hebirou (Snake Coming in Japanese - a good omen) was created by scientists to save the world during a nuclear holocaust. Its aim was to achieve world peace by removing all bad memories that man had, giving them a chance to start anew. After being injured in a nuclear strike, Hebirou gained mysterious powers which enabled it to heal nature, and bring the dead back to life.

Reminiscence of the Past (Nostalgia) The young generation and the railway both share something in common adventurous. A trip down the railway brings us into a world that existed during the times of our grandparents. This photo shows a young teenager sitting on the tracks, trying to imagine what the railway looked like in those days, and how riding on the train would be like.

“Youths today have no sense of self To make the mindmap more effective, a collage is usually created from the mindmap. This helps to build up visual vocabulary about the subject, and generate ideas for the subject.

The Playground Reborn. A playground is for people, young and old, to play in, to relax in, or just to have a walk in. “Play is about more than just ‘Letting off steam’, it can be quiet and contemplative, as well as active and boisterous. ” (Play England, 2008) To create a playground that is relevant, educational, and pleasing to Singaporeans, the structure of a tree is used as inspiration for the design. Left: Sketch of a tree.
The Sketch model With the structure of the tree, a playspace has to be created. How can a tree be a playground? Looking at the structure of the tree, there are 4 prominent parts: 1. Roots 2. Canopy (leaves) 3. Trunk 4. Branches Right: 1st sketch model of playground

More Layers. With more research, it was decided that more layers are to be added to the design. This came in the form of interlinked branches that form mini-canopies, allowing users to climb onto them like a real tree. With the implementation of more layers, more ‘roots’, structures that go above ground and underground were added to add more usable structures. Left: Sketch of the tree-inspired playground design.
The White Tree is Born With more refinements, the final form of the structure was decided upon. Additions include two deep root-structures that would reach to the opposite end of the playground, enabling people to go underground and emerge from another part of the playground easily. Right: Sketch of the form and functions of the structure.
