Happy Holidays from AHC

Page 1

This year has been a busy and exciting year for all of us here in Siem Reap. From opening a new Neonate Unit to training over 1,000 health care workers from all over Cambodia, we have continued to grow while remaining focused on quality, compassionate care. On behalf of the patients, their families and the staff at AHC, រីករាយថ្ងែឈប់សំរាក / Seasons Greetings / Happy Holidays!

Thank you

Best wishes, Dr. Pheaktra, Deputy Executive Director

What we do is only made possible thanks to generous donations from people around the world. Over the years we have been inspired by the many ways both individuals and groups have helped us raise money. Donate today to help us continue to provide free health care, or even better ask friends to donate instead of buying you a Christmas gift. What could be a better gift than knowing you have helped change the lives of hundreds of children? You can also have fun by planning a fantastic fundraising event, or get sporty and take part in a sponsored race. This year we have seen bake sales, marathon runners, cross-country cyclists, fun parties and so much more. Go on, show us some support today.

A memorable story from 2013 is that of 15 year old Samnang*, who lives 35kms from Siem Reap. While out hunting rats with friends, Samnang was accidentally shot with an arrow that entered his chest near his heart. He was immediately taken to our Satellite Clinic on a motorbike where he received emergency, primary care. Samnang was then transferred to AHC where he successfully underwent a six hour operation, performed by three surgeons and a team of dedicated staff. Samnang’s injury could have been fatal and his family were extremely thankful to all those involved in saving their son’s life.

Patient story

*Patient‘s name has been changed for confidentiality reasons.

OHI has committed to sending a volunteer team of cardiac surgeons, theater nurses, ICU nurses, anesthetists, and physiotherapists from all over Australia twice a year to teach and support the team at AHC. In October, 2013 our team of 20 collaborated with AHC and successfully performed 15 heart surgeries. We were warmly welcomed and were encouraged by the trust and openness of the patients’ parents at the hospital. The team loves traveling to Cambodia and working with the AHC staff. It is always sad to leave but we are happy to able to help change the lives of some Cambodian children. We just wish we could do more! Monique Talbot, Open Heart International

Volunteer story

Next year, 2014, will mark the 15th anniversary of Angkor Hospital for Children. We plan to celebrate this occasion by gathering staff, volunteers and supporters from all over the world for a party. So if you are in Siem Reap during January 2014, please let us know! The celebration will highlight some of the hospital’s milestones over the years, as well recognizing AHC becoming a locally registered NGO with the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, and an internationally registered NGO in Hong Kong and USA, during 2013. Presentations will focus on exciting future plans for the hospital and in true Cambodian style, there will be lots of fun, dancing and games to celebrate this special event!
