Hello and Welcome Thank you for taking an interest in Anglia Ruskin University. I very much hope you will join our progressive, thriving and highly successful academic community. We are proud to be a global university, working hard to make our goal of taking university education in imaginative new directions a reality. But we are also proud of our long history. This dates back to 1858, when John Ruskin founded the Cambridge School of Art, now part of our Cambridge campus. Ruskin had wide-ranging interests, including painting, architecture and philosophy; with a creative, enquiring mind, he was not afraid to be unconventional. These are all qualities we encourage in our students, not only because they enrich academic life here but because they are the very skills that the community values in our graduates. You can take advantage of these opportunities at one of our three main campuses: in Cambridge itself, the historic seat of learning; or in one of two cathedral cities, Chelmsford and Peterborough. All three campuses offer a lively, rewarding setting for student life, and provide access to excellent facilities for study, sports, and social activities. Young Street Cambridge Young Street Cambridge is our spectacular new £9 million development: a stateof-the-art clinical teaching facility for undergraduates and professionals. The development houses our Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education and Faculty of Medical Science providing teaching space for our nursing and health courses. It also provides two additional buildings complete with a 200-seat lecture theatre, cafe, seminar rooms, office space, the Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU) and cycle parking. Eye clinic We’re one of the few UK universities to have our own eye clinic. This is open to the public and supports our eye and vision-related teaching and research. Campus gym Work out on the latest exercise machines, pump up with free weights or join one of our instructor-led exercise classes. Located in the Helmore building, our gym’s open seven days a week for the use of students and staff. Additionally we’ve negotiated a special student rate with Kelsey Kerridge Sports Centre, five minutes from campus. Sports facilities Anglia Ruskin is an ambitious sports university with facilities to match. The latest is our Howe’s Close outdoor sports ground, which will provide floodlit grass and artificial pitches, a new pavilion and dressing rooms, warm-up and training areas.

A little history… We can trace our origins to 1858, when John Ruskin opened the School of Art in Cambridge in East Road. As you’ll see from any visit, we’ve come a long way in the intervening years and especially recently, thanks to a sustained multimillion investment in people, buildings and resources.

Many sports are represented here with some, such as cricket and judo, taking place at elite levels. Lord Ashcroft Building This award-winning building houses one of the largest business and management schools in the region. It’s a globally renowned centre for students, researchers and businesses to share learning. Over 100 teaching staff and 6,000 students from 100 countries are attached to the business school, attracted by research and teaching that’s at the cutting edge of business and management practice. Many organisations, including SMEs, major companies and universities collaborate with us here in Chelmsford, through joint research projects or as users of our consultancy services. This gives our students valuable exposure to the real business world, as well as work experience and employment opportunities. The real world of financial trading has entered the classroom, thanks to our new state-ofthe-art Bloomberg room. The £160,000 Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab has 16 terminals, four screens showing Bloomberg News, BBC World, CNBC and Sky News, and a “ticker” displaying share prices from stock markets worldwide. Students can use the portfolio manager facility on Bloomberg – the world’s leading platform for global business and finance news, data, analytical tools and research – to trade and invest using virtual money. Postgraduate Medical Institute (PMI) PMI is a partnership that includes all of the NHS acute hospitals, primary care trusts and mental health trusts in Essex, as well as Essex County Council, Ramsay and Nuffield Hospitals, The Royal Society for Public Health and the five faculties of Anglia Ruskin University. This is our spectacular new hub for postgraduate clinical research and teaching – and it’s fast becoming known internationally as a centre of excellence. Facilities include two large lecture theatres, a simulation suite for training professionals in a variety of patient settings, a Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Research Laboratory, and a state-of-the-art Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory. The MedBIC Business Innovation Centre, Medical and Advanced Engineering The MedBIC, our new £6 million business innovation centre, is a local government collaboration that provides workspaces, workshops, specialised labs and business support to start-up and early stage companies involved in health, medical technology, advanced engineering and other related sectors. Having these businesses located on campus also provides our students employment, internships and industry-related research opportunities. Leisure activities There’s plenty to do on-campus when you’re relaxing, with many activities centred around the Students’ Union – including clubs and societies, cultural events, volunteering and gig nights. Chelmsford is a thriving city with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as theatres, cinemas and a county cricket ground. London’s 30 minutes away by train. A little history... We can trace our Chelmsford campus’ roots back to 1893, when adult furthereducation classes for 50 students were held in Crane Court, Chelmsford. In 1904, Lord Rayleigh laid a foundation stone in Market Road. This was the first step towards creating purpose-built further-education buildings in Chelmsford. In recent years we’ve transformed our campus, investing many millions of pounds in state-of-the-art buildings and facilities for our students and staff. London campus Location The campus is situated in the Clerkenwell district of London, within a few minutes’ walk of the City (London’s financial Square Mile), the Inns of Court (legal district) and the Thames. Tourist attractions such as Covent Garden, Oxford Street, Leicester Square and the South Bank are a few minutes’ bus or tube ride away. Getting around London in general is very easy. The Clerkenwell/Farringdon Road area includes the historic Smithfield market and a cosmopolitan community of businesses, studios, cafes, shops, pubs and restaurants has grown around it. London campus Our central London campus specialises in business and finance courses and is close to the capital’s financial ‘Square Mile’. You will find five floors of state-of-the-art lecture theatres, seminar rooms, PC-equipped study areas and space for you to work, relax and socialise. It’s the ideal place to develop your skills, while experiencing one of the world’s great capital cities. Getting to and from the campus is easy. Underground and National Rail (Thameslink) services stop at nearby Farringdon Road station and London has excellent bus services.

Campus facilities Our high tech lecture theatres, seminar rooms, computer labs and study areas really bring teaching and learning to life, so you can get the most from your course. There’s a large library that carries all of the core texts and online archives for each course, as well as dedicated areas suitable for study groups, quiet study or simply catching up on your emails. If you need to refuel, there is a cafeteria in the building, as well as a popular student common room and a games room with pool tables and table tennis. WiFi is available throughout the building. Student welfare and community We have a student support team based on-campus to help and advise you confidentially on a range of issues, including studying, accommodation, money, health, welfare and student visas. You can also speak to elected members of the campus Student Council. They’re there to help you and represent their fellow students’ interests. Student social life tends to revolve around the cafeteria and common room and we offer a number of sports, including football, cricket and rounders. For more sports and social activities you can join Student Central London as an affiliate member. This will give you access to sports, societies, gyms and numerous social events. Peterborough campus Peterborough is home to our Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education, based at Guild House. The revamped site is a superb learning environment benefiting from new skills labs, lecture spaces and breakout areas.

Library At Guild House we have an extensive digital library, giving you access to databases, e-journals and e-books whenever you need it. Our library also has plenty of space for group work and discussion, individual silent study, multimedia, networked PCs, and WiFi. The library’s opening hours vary at different times of year, but you’ll find our friendly and expert staff on hand at our Help Desk to offer support. We also run a comprehensive programme of information and study skills training. Skills lab The clinical skills lab is designed to mirror a real-life nursing environment. Student nurses use the facility to develop their practical nursing skills, such as moving and handling, resuscitation, bed making, aseptic techniques and infection control. “ This programme appealed to me immediately as it covered a very wide range of areas in film studies including theory and practice. In these last three years, I have become immersed in so many creative activities that have helped me to grow personally and professionally. I have worked for the Cambridge Film Festival, I co-produced a short film, one of my video works was screened at an international film festival, another at the Arts Picturehouse in a special female filmmakers’ screening. In addition, I was awarded a grant by Anglia Ruskin University to participate in a unique silent film festival in Italy, Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto. I visited Venice Architecture Biennale and got an artist residency in Germany for two months, where I taught a video production course and programmed a film-screening event. Most recently, my 16mm film was screened at the Serpentine Gallery along with many other artist filmmakers.”

We’re building a brand new science centre which will be a major facility for computing and technology, psychology, biomedical science and forensic science. The science centre will support changing teaching styles and include a 200-seat bioscience laboratory, a 300-seat lecture theatre and even more space for our postgraduate students. The building will be ready in the 2017/18 academic year.

Institute for International Management Practice (IIMP) The IIMP produces rigorous, practice facing research. As well as supporting research activity and outputs in the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, we deliver business content to research bids across the University. Concerned with the drivers and impacts of technology change, the IIMP’s work in this area has included; healthcare - supporting SME ‘routes to market’ and the impacts of technology on large health organisations; the use of information technology by the police and local authorities and the role of technology innovation in affordable housing. We have also worked in developing economies, studying the impact of mobile technologies on business development and on teaching innovation in North Korea. Other work has focused on economic behaviour occurring around internet transactions. Research into entrepreneurship has focused on the response of small firms to regulation, senior and late career entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial failure, the psychology of entrepreneurship and trust in business relationships. Postgraduate Medical Institute (PMI) Founded in 2008 and based within our Faculty of Medical Science, the Postgraduate Medical Institute (PMI) is a partnership, unique in the United Kingdom, of all the acute, mental health, primary care trusts in the county of Essex, the Royal Society for Public Health, Essex County Council, two national private health providers and Anglia Ruskin University. We provide a focus for clinical education, research and innovation internationally. Our research extends along the care pathway, from ill-health prevention and primary care, through mental health and community services, to acute hospital and specialist tertiary care. Within the Faculty, we have research interests in a disparate array of postgraduate clinical medical specialties with activity in, amongst others, such areas as molecular medicine, ophthalmology, musculoskeletal medicine, interventional neuroradiology, cardiothoracic medicine, immunology, pharmaceutical science, biomechanics and public health. Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) Based in our Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education, the VFI was established in April 2014 to address the issues and challenges faced by the 3 million military veterans, their families and dependants living in the UK. Whilst most veterans adapt very well to civilian life, there are a growing number of studies that show that alcohol misuse, mental illness and social adjustment are significant problems for a minority. In the UK very little work has been undertaken to understand the impact of military service and transition to civilian life on service personnel and importantly, their families. The VFI has a number of ongoing areas of research and policy interest and is host to the national Veterans Research Hub. Cultures of The Digital Global Sustainability Economy Research Institute (GSI) Institute (CoDE) The Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) is CoDE specialise in research projects bridging art and culture with science and technology, both within academia and industry. We facilitate communication and collaboration between creative and technical experts, whilst also drawing on our own multidisciplinary research skills, particularly in fields of art and design, music technology, digital filmmaking, computer gaming, mobile applications and the internet of things. Research projects within CoDE are focused on investigating technologies, innovation and new business opportunities for the creative industries, as well as cultural and societal evolution owing to technological advance.

Types of Doctorate Doctor and Master of Philosophy (PhD MPhil) You’ll identify an area where significant new knowledge or understanding will be generated. Having determined an intellectual problem (‘gap in knowledge’) you’ll establish the research question or hypothesis. The framework for undertaking the research is then formulated. Full-time PhD students normally complete their research within three years. MPhil candidates also critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and must demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. We offer PhD and MPhil study across a wide range of subject areas and in each of our five faculties.

Doctor of Medicine by Research MD (Res) MD degrees are a higher degree available to qualified medical doctors and dentists. You’ll undertake an in-depth research study that will relate specifically to your own medical practice. Completion of the doctorate will identify you as an expert in your field. The qualification will also demonstrate you have a proven ability to problem-solve and to conduct original research at a very high level, contributing to the existing body of knowledge within your own specialist field.

Professional Doctorate (DProf) These programmes are tailored to meet the needs of experienced professionals and practitioners. Research focuses on your own professional practice and integrates professional and academic knowledge. Research Degrees Involving Creative Work Practice-based Doctorates include practice as an integral component (or theorise that practice). This type of doctorate advances knowledge partly by means of practice. Creative work must be accompanied by a written component (thesis or commentary), the length of which must fall within the boundaries established by the Research Degrees’ Regulations.

PhD by Published Work Candidates who have published work (normally written within the last ten years) that demonstrates an independent and original contribution to knowledge and an understanding of research methods, may apply to establish a prima facie case for the award of a PhD or MPhil.

Course Overview: Our Pre-sessional courses, are an intensive programme suitable for students who have applied to study an academic course at Anglia Ruskin University, and need to improve their English skills. We provide courses from 5-20 weeks. These courses run prior to the January and September academic start dates. During the course you will attend classes on writing, reading, listening and speaking. The course will also include academic skills in research methods, note-taking, seminar skills and presentation skills.

Overview: We provide a range of flexible English courses over the summer period. The courses include English language skills, social activities and day trips to popular UK tourist sights. These programmes are suitable for students who would like to have a ‘taster’ of university life in the UK, combined with developing their English skills. During the course you will also have the opportunity to meet our academic staff and find out more about the programmes we offer at Anglia Ruskin University.

During the academic year we provide free in-sessional support for all our International students, to support them with their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Our in-sessional support includes classes on a range of academic and language skills, including writing, reading, listening and presentation skills. We also provide one-to-one academic language consultations to give students the opportunity to discuss their academic work in more detail.

At the end of your course you will take our English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). After successfully completing the pre-sessional course you should progress onto your academic course at Anglia Ruskin University.

English for University Studies Location: Cambridge Start Dates: Throughout the year Course Overview: Our English for University Studies (EUS) programme has been designed for international students whose first language is not in English and would like to study on a course that combines General and Academic English. This course is suitable for students who may need additional English support prior to taking a Pre-sessional course, or who would like the option of taking a year-round English programme before starting their academic course at Anglia Ruskin University or Cambridge Ruskin International College (CRIC). This course includes an IELTS exam test at the end of the programme.

IELTS Preparation Location: Cambridge Start Dates: March, April, May, June Course Overview: Our IELTS Preparation course is run in the evenings and is suitable for students who may be living/working in the UK and would like to attend a course for additional support, prior to taking an IELTS. We offer 6 and 4 week courses, depending on your level of English.

Accommodation University Accommodation

Living in university-provided accommodation can be an excellent way to meet new friends. In both Cambridge and Chelmsford, the accommodation is close to the city centre and within walking distance of the train station with its fast links to London.

All of the accommodation is selfcatering, but meals can be purchased from multiple on-site catering outlets, if required. These amenities are open during the day from Monday to Friday, while vending machines are accessible 24/7. We can also help if you have any medical requirements and we have a selection of rooms suitable for a range of disabilities, and a few rooms with provision for an adjacent live-in carer.

We advise you to apply for accommodation as soon as you have accepted your offer of an academic place with us. You have a good chance of securing your first choice of accommodation if you apply early.

• S tudy bedrooms are usually furnished with a single bed, wardrobe or hanging space, chest of drawers or under-bed storage containers, desk and study chair.

General information about university accommodation • Flats and houses are normally shared between three and nine students. • M ost accommodation consists of single study bedrooms, sharing kitchen/living areas and either an en-suite shower room or shared bathroom.

All accommodation offers broadband internet access. • R oom rents, which include utilities (gas, electricity and water charges) to a generous limit, are based on the room size, property location and facilities available. Please be aware that Anglia Ruskin does not have any accommodation suitable for families and that self-contained accommodation in the private sector can be very expensive (typically a self-contained, one bedroom flat costs from around £800 per month based on a twelve month rental period). Family houses are normally more than £1,000 per month in Cambridge, lower rents can be found in Chelmsford.

Private sector accommodation If you need to find a room or flat in the local area, our Residential Service offices at both campuses manage ‘Studentpad’, our password protected website that advertises accommodation available for students. Lodgings can be particularly helpful to students who are studying for just one semester or for students looking for the experience of living with local people. You’ll live in their home which may include their family, pets or others. You’ll share the facilities and in many cases form good friendships. Lodgings will require a student to be flexible and prepared to make adjustments to suit everyone in the house e.g. times when the kitchen and bathroom may be available,

meals taken, etc. It can be a very effective means of both consolidating language learning and exploring a different culture. Rooms can be shared, or single, and offered on various board types. Half board You’ll receive bed, breakfast and an evening meal. You can expect to pay between £90 and £110 per week in Chelmsford and £105 to £140 per week in Cambridge. Bed and breakfast You’ll receive breakfast only (which may be self-service), and you can expect to pay between £85 and £95 per week in Chelmsford and £100 to £115 per week in Cambridge. Self-catering You’ll be allowed to use the family kitchen to prepare your own meals and can expect to pay £80 to £100 per week in Chelmsford and £85 to £105 in Cambridge.

Rents are usually paid in instalments throughout the year with the first instalment commonly higher than later instalments. Students studying for only one semester are usually expected to pay either in full, or in three instalments. In all cases an advance rent payment to secure an offer of accommodation, as well as the first regular instalment, must be paid in full before keys are issued. Paying your fees Deposit Most international students are required to pay a deposit of £4,000 for undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate research courses or provide an acceptable letter of sponsorship. The deposit will be listed as a condition in your offer letter, and you’ll not be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) until we’ve received your deposit. Early payment discount To all international students who are paying their annual tuition fees in full, our University will offer an early payment discount. The discount is £400 and is applicable to all international students (undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate research). Choosing to pay in instalments If you choose to pay your tuition fees in instalments, you’ll pay a £4,000 deposit, then instalments as follows: • Students starting in September: 60% of the remaining fees (including the deposit) at registration, a further 40% in January. • S tudents starting in January: 60% of the remaining fees (including the deposit) at registration, a further 40% in May. • A ll tuition fee instalments are deducted for payment on the 15th of the appropriate month. The International Merit Scholarship The International Merit Scholarship provides awards of either £500 or £1,000 to well-qualified students applying for any full-time undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate research course. In some countries, we offer a laptop alternative. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit. Once you apply for a course at Anglia Ruskin you’ll be automatically considered for a scholarship and details of any award given will be included in your offer letter.

International Alumni Scholarship This scholarship of £1,000, deducted from the tuition fee, is available if you’re: • a current Anglia Ruskin undergraduate student who is progressing straight to our postgraduate taught course, or • a current Anglia Ruskin postgraduate student progressing straight to our postgraduate research course.

Sports Scholarship We offer selective sports scholarships and bursaries to students of high sporting potential enrolled on our academic programmes. Awards range from £500 to £1,000 per year, and are available in a variety of sports including cricket, rowing, athletics and swimming.

Transfer Scholarship If you are transferring from a partner institution with which we have a cooperation agreement you may receive a £1,000 transfer scholarship as a reduction of your tuition fees. At the moment we have an agreement with the London School of Accountancy.

We issue the necessary documentation to assist students in obtaining entry clearance to the UK. This section will highlight the most important parts you need to know about visas and immigration. Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for longer than six months As a non-EEA student you need a visa to study at Anglia Ruskin University. The Tier 4 (General) visa is the category for adult students who want to come to or remain in the UK for their post-16 education. In order to apply for your Tier 4 student visa you’ll need a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS), which is a unique 14 digital alphanumeric reference number and the information we have sent to the UK Visas and Immigration regarding your study with us. As a university, we will issue you with a ‘CAS statement’ which includes the CAS number and information that you’ll need to complete your visa application form. The earliest you can apply for your Tier 4 student visa is 3 months before the start of your course and for most countries the British Embassy Entry Clearance Officers will let you have the decision on your visa within 3 weeks of your application with them. Check the guide processing times (gov.uk/visa-processing-times) to find out how long getting a visa might take in your country. Your CAS will not be issued until you have met all your conditions of your offer including paying your deposit and sending us a copy of the information page from your passport.

If you have made your application to Anglia Ruskin University via one of our agents or our partner institutions, they will support your visa application and will ask you to provide a number of documents to ensure you are ready to apply for your visa. They will then request your CAS from us. The documents they will need to see will be: • Original documents that you have used to obtain your offer including academic qualifications and evidence of English language proficiency. • A receipt for your deposit payment. • Y our passport and any previous UK visas. • Evidence of your maintenance funds. If you have applied directly to the University you’ll need to submit these documents to International Admissions (internationaladmissions@anglia. ac.uk) before your CAS is issued. So that you are ready to make your visa application in good time to arrive at the start of your course you should start preparing early. This is especially important if you are from a country which requires you to obtain a certificate confirming you do not have infectious pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) before making an immigration application to come to the UK. Details of how to obtain a TB certificate in your country can be found at: gov.uk/tb-test-visa. Please be aware that you’ll need to book an appointment and at busy times (such as between July to October) you may have to wait ten days or more for an appointment.

You’ll also be required to show that you have sufficient funds to pay for your remaining fees and a fixed amount towards your living costs, this is known as maintenance. You must be able to show, using original bank statements, that the money has been held for at least 28 days (finishing on the date of the closing balance) and the end of that 28 days period cannot be more than one month before the date of the application. The bank statements must also be from a bank recognised by the UK Visas and Immigration. If the bank account is not a UK current account then you must show that you have sufficient funds based on the prevailing exchange rate at the time of the application of your visa (not at the time the bank statement commenced). You cannot apply for your visa if you do not meet this requirement – your application will be refused. If you are in doubt please check with us or with our agents as non-compliance with this requirement even on a technicality will result in a refusal of your visa. Cost of living in the UK Academic Technology The UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) Approval Scheme regularly reviews and sets the minimum (ATAS) clearance living cost requirements for students studying in universities in or outside certification from London. This is the same amount which The Foreign and is needed for your visa application too. At the moment, for students studying Commonwealth Office outside London the required funds are £9,135 per 9 months academic year or £1,015 per month. Please be aware that this monthly recommended amount does not include your tuition fees. The recommended amount is the minimum funds required to cover living costs and your budget should reflect your own priorities – for example, you may wish to spend a little more on books and a little less on clothes. Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for six months or less The ‘Short term study visa category will allow you to come to the UK if you are 18 years or older, and want to enter: • for up to 6 months to study a short course

International candidates who are applying for postgraduate level courses in certain science or technology subjects (and who are not from either a European Economic Area country or Switzerland) will require ATAS clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At Anglia Ruskin University, this will mainly apply to students undertaking research or Postgraduate taught courses in the faculties of Science & Technology, Health, Social Care & Education and Medical Science. If you require an ATAS certificate, we will inform you of this requirement in your offer letter and provide you with details to support your ATAS application.
