Hello and Welcome Thank you for taking an interest in Anglia Ruskin University. I very much hope you will join our progressive, thriving and highly successful academic community. Whilst this prospectus will give you much of the information you need, I also encourage you to explore our website and to meet our team during our various overseas events. We are proud to be a global university, working hard to make our goal of taking university education in imaginative new directions a reality. But we are also proud of our long history. This dates back to 1858, when John Ruskin founded the Cambridge School of Art, now part of our Cambridge campus. Ruskin had wide-ranging interests, including painting, architecture and philosophy; with a creative, enquiring mind, he was not afraid to be unconventional. These are all qualities we encourage in our students, not only because they enrich academic life here but because they are the very skills that the community values in our graduates. You can take advantage of these opportunities at one of our three main campuses: in Cambridge itself, the historic seat of learning; or in one of two cathedral cities, Chelmsford and Peterborough. All three campuses offer a lively, rewarding setting for student life, and provide access to excellent facilities for study, sports, and social activities. We are constantly striving to improve our campuses, and our developments continue with the needs of our students and the environment

4

in mind. Our campuses reflect our environmental values and we encourage ‘green’ thinking, for example through our encouragement of the use of public transport. Our international outlook is something else you will notice. Increasing numbers of overseas students choose to study with us, helping us develop a truly diverse community here – so be ready to meet people from widely differing cultures and backgrounds and with very different life experiences from your own. We know that choosing a University is one of the most important decisions you will make and we hope you enjoy finding out more about us, and that you will consider joining us. We are committed to making your time here happy and fulfilling – and to supporting you in your next steps in life. Whatever you read in the press, the personal and economic case for the value of a university education remains compelling. After a university education you will never be the same again!

“ This programme appealed to me immediately as it covered a very wide range of areas in film studies including theory and practice. In these last three years, I have become immersed in so many creative activities that have helped me to grow personally and professionally. I have worked for the Cambridge Film Festival, I co-produced a short film, one of my video works was screened at an international film festival, another at the Arts Picturehouse in a special female filmmakers’ screening. In addition, I was awarded a grant by Anglia Ruskin University to participate in a unique silent film festival in Italy, Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto. I visited Venice Architecture Biennale and got an artist residency in Germany for two months, where I taught a video production course and programmed a film-screening event. Most recently, my 16mm film was screened at the Serpentine Gallery along with many other artist filmmakers.”

I am really enjoying my studies, particularly our research methods and non-communicable disease management modules. I am really keen to undertake more research in communicable disease management, possibly within a PhD here at Anglia Ruskin. During the course, I have been given excellent support from my tutors and have been able to participate in field trips to London, specifically looking at waste management systems – it was great to be able to go and see how things are done first-hand. I have also been able to take part in and help to organise a range of public health related conferences. I am now a member of the Royal Society for Public Health and have joined the American Society for Nutrition. I would 100% recommend my course to anyone thinking of studying Public Health in the UK. The course has helped me to develop both personally and professionally and allowed me to have a greater understanding of effective public health practice and how to tackle inequalities in health.”

Student View Xiran Yang Course: Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons) Country of origin: China “ Living on the Anglia Ruskin University campus, I realised that studying is only a small part of living in the UK. Fitting into western culture is important and understanding different aspects will teach you to be independent. Welcome Week was excellent; the Students’ Union held lots of activities giving students the opportunity to join different university social clubs. I joined the Football Club, as I love playing football. At first I found it hard communicating with other members of the club as English is not my first language. However, the people I met were very friendly, and my social life has grown as well as my confidence and ability to communicate. I’ve adapted well to fit into western culture and I strongly recommend taking part in Anglia Ruskin activities and joining social clubs. It helps you get to know different people as well as improve your English language skills.”

Highly rated research In the UK the Government commissions independent assessment of university research every five years. The results are used to determine where public funds should be directed during the following period. Involving over 52,000 academics from 154 universities, the results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 show that we are making a significant impact on economics, societies, the environment and culture in all corners of the globe. Expert reviewers rate each institute’s research activity by subject area, for quality and impact. In the REF 2014 Anglia Ruskin achieved the highest, world-leading ranking in these major categories (see page 56). REF 2014 is the biggest research assessment exercise in the world and the results are used to allocate around £2 billion of research funding every year. Our five faculties and six Research Institutes bring together a kaleidoscope of subjects and specialist partners. Led by an inspiring team of academics, we champion a cross-disciplinary approach to research. We bridge scientific, technical and creative fields. You can find out more about our research excellence at anglia.ac.uk/rae

Institutes making a difference Our Research Institutes are internationally recognised centres run by Anglia Ruskin University in collaboration with business, government and third-sector organisations.

Institute for International Management Practice (IIMP) The IIMP produces rigorous, practice facing research. As well as supporting research activity and outputs in the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, we deliver business content to research bids across the University. Concerned with the drivers and impacts of technology change, the IIMP’s work in this area has included; healthcare - supporting SME ‘routes to market’ and the impacts of technology on large health organisations; the use of information technology by the police and local authorities and the role of technology innovation in affordable housing. We have also worked in developing economies, studying the impact of mobile technologies on business development and on teaching innovation in North Korea. Other work has focused on economic behaviour occurring around internet transactions. Research into entrepreneurship has focused on the response of small firms to regulation, senior and late career entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial failure, the psychology of entrepreneurship and trust in business relationships. The Institute is able to offer research services in (technology) benefits realisation, policy and technology evaluation, policy support, strategic consultancy, technology forecasting, ethnographic research, systems analysis, large-scale surveys and data analysis for large data sets. Visit anglia.ac.uk/iimp

Well-funded and highly equipped, they employ and host world-leading experts, producing knowledge that benefits the world and feeds directly into our university teaching programmes. Our Institutes are part of a wider community of research units, centres, groups and clusters based at Anglia Ruskin. Many of these contribute to the Institutes’ multidisciplinary projects.

Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) Based in our Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education, the VFI was established in April 2014 to address the issues and challenges faced by the 3 million military veterans, their families and dependants living in the UK. Whilst most veterans adapt very well to civilian life, there are a growing number of studies that show that alcohol misuse, mental illness and social adjustment are significant problems for a minority. In the UK very little work has been undertaken to understand the impact of military service and transition to civilian life on service personnel and importantly, their families. The VFI has a number of ongoing areas of research and policy interest and is host to the national Veterans Research Hub. We are currently focusing on: • The impact of traumatic limb loss on the family • T he criminal justice system and veterans • Family support • P rovision for Foreign and Commonwealth families

Types of Doctorate Doctor and Master of Philosophy (PhD MPhil) You’ll identify an area where significant new knowledge or understanding will be generated. Having determined an intellectual problem (‘gap in knowledge’) you’ll establish the research question or hypothesis. The framework for undertaking the research is then formulated. Full-time PhD students normally complete their research within three years. MPhil candidates also critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and must demonstrate an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field. We offer PhD and MPhil study across a wide range of subject areas and in each of our five faculties.

Doctor of Medicine by Research MD (Res) MD degrees are a higher degree available to qualified medical doctors and dentists. You’ll undertake an in-depth research study that will relate specifically to your own medical practice. Completion of the doctorate will identify you as an expert in your field. The qualification will also demonstrate you have a proven ability to problem-solve and to conduct original research at a very high level, contributing to the existing body of knowledge within your own specialist field.

Professional Doctorate (DProf) These programmes are tailored to meet the needs of experienced professionals and practitioners. Research focuses on your own professional practice and integrates professional and academic knowledge. Please check with the university before you apply as most DProf programmes are only offered in part-time mode.

DProf programmes at Anglia Ruskin rogrammes are in the following P subject areas: • Applied Linguistics • Business Administration (DBA) • Education (EdD)

If you are seeking admission to the MPhil, MPhil with the possibility of transfer to PhD or DProf, you will normally be required to hold a first or upper second class Honours degree from a university or other institution of higher education recognised by Anglia Ruskin.

• Health and Social Care • Practical Theology • Science and Technology Visit anglia.ac.uk/researchprogrammes Email international@anglia.ac.uk

Research Degrees Involving Creative Work Practice-based Doctorates include practice as an integral component (or theorise that practice). This type of doctorate advances knowledge partly by means of practice. Creative work must be accompanied by a written component (thesis or commentary), the length of which must fall within the boundaries established by the Research Degrees’ Regulations.

PhD by Published Work Candidates who have published work (normally written within the last ten years) that demonstrates an independent and original contribution to knowledge and an understanding of research methods, may apply to establish a prima facie case for the award of a PhD or MPhil.

The Doctoral School We have created a Doctoral School to better focus support for our postgraduate research (PGR) students. The School brings together into one unit the administrative support for our PGR activity as well as the Researcher Development Programme of seminars and workshops. It is based on both the Chelmsford and Cambridge campuses. Visit anglia.ac.uk/study/postgraduateresearch

In addition, for entry to a DProf you will need to demonstrate that you have appropriate professional experience. We also accept applications for the PhD direct entry programme. In this case you will need to hold an award equivalent to a UK Master’s degree, in an appropriate cognate area, which includes training in research and the execution of a research project. You will be required to supply documentation to support your application. If you do not have these qualifications, your application will be considered on its merits in relation to the nature and scope of your proposed research. If English is not your first language you will also need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 and have achieved a minimum of English Language competence to at least IELTS 5.5 across all four disciplines of writing , reading, speaking and listening. Living in Cambridge was one of the best times of my life and I made so many friends from all over the world, who I am still in contact with now. I enjoyed everything about CRIC. The staff are very generous and kind and always ready to help. It made me feel like they really do care about every single student they have. The teachers are also very helpful and professional. I definitely think that studying in the UK has been beneficial to my future. For me it has been a ticket for a better and more successful life. I recently launched a new Real Estate Agency in the heart of Dubai and although we are only two months in, we already have more than 100 luxurious properties to work with. Student visas and immigration We are a registered sponsor under Tier 4 of the UK’s points-based immigration system. We issue the necessary documentation to assist students in obtaining entry clearance to the UK. This section will highlight the most important parts you need to know about visas and immigration. For more information, visit: anglia.ac.uk/visa

Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for longer than six months As a non-EEA student you need a visa to study at Anglia Ruskin University. The Tier 4 (General) visa is the category for adult students who want to come to or remain in the UK for their post-16 education. In order to apply for your Tier 4 student visa you’ll need a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS), which is a unique 14 digital alphanumeric reference number and the information we have sent to the UK Visas and Immigration regarding your study with us. As a university, we will issue you with a ‘CAS statement’ which includes the CAS number and information that you’ll need to complete your visa application form. The earliest you can apply for your Tier 4 student visa is 3 months before the start of your course and for most countries the British Embassy Entry Clearance Officers will let you have the decision on your visa within 3 weeks of your application with them. Check the guide processing times (gov.uk/visa-processing-times) to find out how long getting a visa might take in your country. Your CAS will not be issued until you have met all your conditions of your offer including paying your deposit and sending us a copy of the information page from your passport.

If you have made your application to Anglia Ruskin University via one of our agents or our partner institutions, they will support your visa application and will ask you to provide a number of documents to ensure you are ready to apply for your visa. They will then request your CAS from us. The documents they will need to see will be: • Original documents that you have used to obtain your offer including academic qualifications and evidence of English language proficiency. • A receipt for your deposit payment. • Y our passport and any previous UK visas. • Evidence of your maintenance funds. If you have applied directly to the University you’ll need to submit these documents to International Admissions (internationaladmissions@anglia. ac.uk) before your CAS is issued. So that you are ready to make your visa application in good time to arrive at the start of your course you should start preparing early. This is especially important if you are from a country which requires you to obtain a certificate confirming you do not have infectious pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) before making an immigration application to come to the UK. Details of how to obtain a TB certificate in your country can be found at: gov.uk/tb-test-visa. Please be aware that you’ll need to book an appointment and at busy times (such as between July to October) you may have to wait ten days or more for an appointment.

You’ll also be required to show that you have sufficient funds to pay for your remaining fees and a fixed amount towards your living costs, this is known as maintenance. You must be able to show, using original bank statements, that the money has been held for at least 28 days (finishing on the date of the closing balance) and the end of that 28 days period cannot be more than one month before the date of the application. The bank statements must also be from a bank recognised by the UK Visas and Immigration. If the bank account is not a UK current account then you must show that you have sufficient funds based on the prevailing exchange rate at the time of the application of your visa (not at the time the bank statement commenced). You cannot apply for your visa if you do not meet this requirement – your application will be refused. If you are in doubt please check with us or with our agents as non-compliance with this requirement even on a technicality will result in a refusal of your visa. If you would like further information about applying for a visa, contact the British Embassy or High Commission in your home country. Visit gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa

Cost of living in the UK Academic Technology The UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) Approval Scheme regularly reviews and sets the minimum (ATAS) clearance living cost requirements for students studying in universities in or outside certification from London. This is the same amount which The Foreign and is needed for your visa application too. At the moment, for students studying Commonwealth Office outside London the required funds are £9,135 per 9 months academic year or £1,015 per month. Please be aware that this monthly recommended amount does not include your tuition fees. The recommended amount is the minimum funds required to cover living costs and your budget should reflect your own priorities – for example, you may wish to spend a little more on books and a little less on clothes. Please visit the UKVI website for the most up-to-date information about the cost of living in the UK.

Students studying with Anglia Ruskin for six months or less The ‘Short term study visa category will allow you to come to the UK if you are 18 years or older, and want to enter: • for up to 6 months to study a short course

International candidates who are applying for postgraduate level courses in certain science or technology subjects (and who are not from either a European Economic Area country or Switzerland) will require ATAS clearance certification from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At Anglia Ruskin University, this will mainly apply to students undertaking research or Postgraduate taught courses in the faculties of Science & Technology, Health, Social Care & Education and Medical Science. If you require an ATAS certificate, we will inform you of this requirement in your offer letter and provide you with details to support your ATAS application. For more information about ATAS including guidance on submitting an application: Visit fco.gov.uk/atas

• o r for up to 11 months to study an English language course. This particularly applies if you are coming to study on one semester programmes (such as Study Abroad) or are undertaking a ‘dual award’ programme where less than six months of the course is based in the UK. If you are coming to Anglia Ruskin University to study an English language course lasting less than six months, but intend to then continue studying with us on a degree programme the Tier 4 visa route is more appropriate for you.
