LAKE SHORE’S CLASS OF 2015 CELEBRATES MOVING-UP DAY!

This past Friday, Lake Shore High School and its Freshmen Academy recognized and celebrated all students of the class of 2015. Students were honored for scholaticism and positive character traits. Students took time to honor freshman teachers and retiring Spanish teacher, Mrs. Charlene Mindel, for her dedication and years of service to the Lake Shore Central School District. After the award ceremony, students were challenged to one-trial critical and creative thnking activity where they had to create self-sustaining structures in small groups out of newspapers and masking tape in only fifteen minutes. Once students completed their group projects, they let loose and had fun playing various games in our gymnasium. It was a great day, and the Lake Shore Central Freshmen Academay could not be more proud of the class of 2015. Pictured- freshmen playing “larger-than-life” volleyball.

SAFETY AND SMART DECISIONS AROUND HOT WEATHER AND WATER

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein today called attention to the need for increased vigilance and awareness when swimming or enjoying other waterrelated recreational activities following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) issuance of a report stating that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death worldwide, and the highest rates are among children. While drowning deaths have declined in the United States in the last decade, drowning remains the leading cause of injury death among children 1-4 years. The highest unintentional drowning rates occurred among children younger than 4 years old and the death rate for males was nearly four times that for females. Nonfatal and fatal drowning incidents occurred most commonly on weekends and during June-August. Among children younger than 4 years, many fatal and nonfatal drowning incidents occurred in swimming pools and bathtubs. “With hot weather once again here, Many people will be heading to the water to cool off,” said Dr. Burstein. “Whether swmming, boating, or enjoying the water some other way, everyone needs to think safety and common sense first. Children should always be supervised around water. Lifejackets should be used by boaters and jet-skiers, and swimming should not take place in dangerous or restricted areas.” To prevent drowning, CDC recommends that all parents and children should learn survival swimmng skills. Research shows that early formal swimming lessons reduce risk of drowning among children aged 1-4 years. Additionally, envirionmental protections (suchas isolation pool fences and Lifeguards) should be in place; alcohol should be avoided while swimming, boating, water skiing, or suupervisors should have training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Information regarding drowning risk factors and prevention strategies is available at http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/index.html,http:// www.cdc.gov/safechild. To access the CDC report, visit http://www.cdc.gov//mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ mm6119a4.htm?s cid=mm6119a4 e. VOLUNTEERS WORK AT PIONEER CEMETERY

Recently, 15 community minded volunteers spent Saturday morning cleaning up the Pioneer Cemetery on North Main Street. Led by Evans Historical Society President, Joe Pisarski, the group removed debris left from the removal of tree stumps, trimmed brush, and dug out many roots. With the assistance of Evans Supervisor, Keith Dash, and Parks and Recreation Director, Russ Manguso, the stumps were previously removed and the area mowed. According to Mr. Pisarski, plans are underway to repair monuments, install a sign indicating the name “Pioneer Cemetery” as well as a plaque designating the cemetery as a National Registered Historic Site. Included in the volunteer effort were Mr. Pisarski, Brigitte and Phil Boyer, Jim Dinkuhn, Tom Nolan, Mary Kaiser, Chuck Siracuse, Giff Swyers, Don Arcara, Dick Dillon, Tim Clark, Ken Drag, Chuck Crave, Dave Dustman, and Mark Bouvier. Mr. Pisarski also thanked Jim Ginnitti for the use of his tractor which was invaluable in removing much of the dirt and debris. Pictured above is the group taking a well deserved break on the warm morning.

LS 3RD GRADERS LOOK FORWARD TO PLAYING INSTRUMENTS IN FALL

On May 18th, third graders from acrosss the district traveled to the Middle School for the annual 3rd grade instrumental music recruitment assembly. Students were treated to a performance by the 7th grade band, the 7th grade orchestra and an 8th grade brass ensemble. Students also listened to each band and orchestra instrument perform a short piece individually. After the performance, students were able to select three instruments that they were interested in playing. In the following weeks, Mrs. Streeter, Mrs. Martin and Mr. Captiummino have been trying the students out on the instruments that they selected at the assembly. The music teachers have been working with the students and the parents to help them choose an instrument that they will be the most successful on. Current 3rd grade students will have the opportunity once again this year to begin lesssons on their new instrument over the summer. Lake Shore will be offering the summer music program for students currently in 3rd - 12th grade. Beginner students will be able to get a head start on learning their instrument for a year or more will have the opportunity to continue lessons on their instrument as well as participate in a large ensemble. For more information on this program, contact your child’s music teacher. The Lake Shore music department is very excited for the new group of beginners to join their program. We hope it will be a fun and rewarding experience for all involved. Pictured: A.J. BACK PAIN? Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Lower Back Pain • Muscle Spasm or Strain • Bulging Lumbar Discs • Numbness or Soreness in your Legs • Shooting Hip or Thigh Pain Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep. You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced. My name is Dr. Derek Bell, owner of Affordable Chiropractic in Derby. Over the past 18 years since we’ve opened the doors, I’ve seen hundreds of people with back pain leave the office pain free. Because I’ve seen it with my own eyes, I strongly believe ... Back pain is NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. Here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic. “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.” - British Medical Journal HOUSE FOR RENT: Angola, upgraded one bedroom. “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” - Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. This means in just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. For 10 days only, I’m running a very special offer where you can find out how much this amazing treatment can help your back pain. What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation for only $27. Just call before June 22nd, and here’s what you’ll get ... An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen ... really listen ... to the details of your case. A complete computerized spinal evaluation, full set of specialized x-rays (if necessary), and a thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your back pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. Life is too short to let pain slow your down. Call now 947-4950.

Guide

As we watch our children grow,

from taking their first steps to maturing into young men and women, there is no greater thrill than being a dad. It is a privilege that certainly should never be taken for granted. With that in mind, we pay tribute to this timehonored tradition, as we celebrate Father’s Day.

In the following pages, several

local businesses have promoted their products and services as part of a Father’s Day Gift Guide. In recognition of that special person in our life, they suggest some unique ways to thank “dear old dad” for all that he does. From sports and entertainment to eating or just plain relaxing, they offer ideas for things that most dads like. We encourage you to shop at these local merchants, as you search for that thoughtful way to acknowledge dad on this special day and show how much you appreciate him.

As fathers ourselves, we salute all

the dads that do so much to make their family proud. On June 24 and EVERY DAY of the year, Happy Father’s Day!

Great Prices & Service! SHOPPING LOCALLY HELPS EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY PROSPER!

Father’s Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives. Put away those coupons for neckties and remote control caddies. There’s a good chance Dad wants something a little less cliche and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas, there’s bound to be something that will be a perfect fit. Sports - If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jersies, game memorabilia, tickets to the next athome game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming package are some gift ideas that will coordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages. Personalized Gifts - Personalized gifts can show that special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead of a run-of-themill item pulled off a store shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame engraved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his initials may also be a special treat. Fit for Foodies - As the adage goes, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Take advantage of these

words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinary-themed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will enjoy a cookbook by his favorite Food Network(TM) personality. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guaranteeing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wine- and cheese-tasting adventure. Gear Heads - Some dads get revved up about automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automotive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in demand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite hand-wash, auto-detailing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas. Techies - Some dads get excited about the latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technological gadgets sold in those speciality magazines and mall stores are musthaves. Chances are if you spend enough time with Dad you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device he’ll find invaluable. Although it may seem difficult on the surface to find a gift for Dad that he truly will enjoy and use, all it takes is a close examination of his likes to find something appropriate.

ThoughTs of DaD Footprints

“Walk a little slower, Daddy”, said a Child so small “I’m following in your Footsteps and I don’t want to fall, Sometimes your steps are very fast, Sometimes they’re hard to see. So walk a little slower, Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I’m all grown up, You’re what I want to be. Then I’ll have a little child, Who’ll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right And know that I was true. So walk a littler slower, Daddy, For I must follow you.”

WHAT MAKES A DAD God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualites, And then there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it - Dad.

THE RAT PACK IS COMING SAVE THE DATE

Yes, the RAT PACK (Frank & Dean) are coming to Lake Erie Beach Fire Co. on Friday, July 20, 2012 from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Norm Young and I (Fred Allen) with our wives, Pat & Colleen saw this show in Florida during the past winter. Scott Brotherton and Damion Fontaine portray Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin. Others portray Louis Armstrong, the Blues Brothers, etc. Great entertainment and dancing too. We all agreed it was one of the best shows we had ever seen and the audience gave a standing ovation as they were invited back for next year. We talked to Damion and found out they worked out of Cleveland, Ohio so we asked if they would come to the other end of Lake Erie and they accepted. Tickets are available by calling 549-3706 or (549-0654 Club Room.)
