The 37th Annual Year of Concerts at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park is halfway through the schedule. Recent groups at the park included the Boston Town Band under the direction Ms. Kyle on July 10th. The 70-member group includes members from late-middle school age through many senior citizens. The program opened with Newcomb-Long Post 928 posting the colors and remaining at attention while the band opened the evening with a rousing John Phillips Sousa march entitled “King Cotton”. The colors remained posted while the band and the audience presented and sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” The color guard then exited the park to a cadence beat provided by the band. The evening was sponsored by the American Legion Post. The band presented a wide variety of music from Broadway show tunes, movie theme music, several marches and patriotic pieces. The concert also included a vocalist, a saxophone soloist and gentlemen demonstrating an original style sousaphone that had the large bill facing straight up the instrument. The evening began wrapping up when the band played a tribute to all branches of the military and asked veterans from the various branches to stand when “their piece was being played.” The final music for the evening was an outstanding piece - “The Stars and Stripes Forever” - which brought the audience to their feet. On Wednesday, July 17th the fabulous Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra from the Lancaster Central School District presented an evening sponsored by the Angola location of Tops Friendly Markets. Due to the weather report, which predicted heavy rain and thunder storms, even though they did materialize, caused the concert to be moved to the New Angola Theater. The theater setting worked very well with the student musicians filling the stage and the orchestra pit to capacity. The entire first floor of the theater was packed with overflow attendees causing the balcony to be opened. The over 30-member band consists of middle and high school students who are not only involved with the steel band, but are also members of the various music offerings at Lancaster. The group is conducted by Ken Kowalski. He explained the origin of the steel drums in the 1920s and 30s and that they were made from steel drums ranging from something like a 5-gallon can through a 50-gallon drum. The audience was so enthusiastic about the program and asked that the park committee think about asking the group back in 2020 – the Carnival Kids are already scheduled to be in Angola on Wednesday, July 29, 2020! This past week on Wednesday, July 24th, Buffalo’s Premiere Italian Band, The Formula Band played at the park with the evening being sponsored by Chiavetta’s Catering and Chicken BBQ. We’ll see the Kokomo Time Band, a Beach and Island music group from Chautauqua County at the park on July 31st; they are sponsored by Evans Bank and the Evans Agency. The Evans Township Lions Club is providing refreshments for sale at the park each week. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and plan to enjoy the remaining concerts that run each Wednesday through August 28th. View the recently painted Gazebo, the hanging flower baskets, and the well groomed park setting that is maintained in cooperation with the Village of Angola Department of Public Works. LS Central School Facilities Project Nears End of Phase 1

One of the things a school district capital construction project can do is ensure building integrity. As expected, large-scale roof, electrical and plumbing systems all get renovated, repaired or replaced. But a project can also redesign the way a school conducts its various interactions with students, staff and community. Making the district’s buildings work better to serve those groups is part of what’s being accomplished with the ongoing $59.8M capital construction project at Lake Shore Central Schools. Approved by voters in 2017, the project is now nearing the end of Phase 1, which has focused primarily on transportation facilities and the High School. At the High School, safety and security protocols are being strengthened with new security systems that are significantly more advanced than the system that was in place. For example, says John Wilson, Director of Facilities, the district is updating to a much more secure main entrance. “Nobody gets in without being buzzed in,” he says. “We changed the entrance structure so there is a second buzz in. You can’t just walk directly into the building after that first door.” In addition, the area just inside the entrance has been re-designed to consolidate nonclassroom areas where the general public, parents, and students are most likely to come and go during the day. These areas - the main office, guidance areas and nurse’s office – are close to the front, rather than deep in the building. This allows electronic access control and easy identification of all who enter the building, as well as more efficient video monitoring. “Safety is paramount and a top priority in all phases of the project,” says Mr. Wilson.”All of our building entrances, main offices, foyers and health offices are being designed as safe and secure facilities for students, staff and community.” At the High School, the nurse’s office now offers a more private space for addressing students’ physical and mental health needs. It includes a curtained three-bed “sick bay,” a private exam room for physicals, and a large, ADA-compliant restroom area complete with shower. The School Counseling Center offices are also in this area and are set up so discussions with students and parents can be more private. There also is a new College and Careers Center in the Counseling Center, allowing students to research potential career paths and get help preparing college applications. In addition, for public convenience, the restrooms in the auditorium area in the front lobby are being expanded and renovated. “We have main mechanical systems in our facilities, such as HVAC, plumbing, water and electrical services, which are at the end of their useful life and need replacement,” says Mr. Wilson. “In similar vein, the educational and service systems in our facilities also must evolve to meet the changes in security, technology and program needs.” Work is now underway to prepare for the launch of Phase 2, which encompasses arts, athletics and technology renovations. Approval from the NYS Education Department is anticipated this Fall, with construction starting in early 2020. At the High School, this work will entail additions to the music, physical education and technology areas, as well as additional team locker rooms, gym upgrades and resurfaced tennis courts. Both the High School and Middle School will see auditorium renovation, and the gym will be upgraded at the Middle School. Elementary projects include replacement of the playgrounds and outdoor basketball court at Highland, renovation of classroom restrooms and renovation of a former locker room into instructional space, as well as refinishing the wood stage floor. At J.T. Waugh, air conditioning will be provided to second floor classrooms. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!

July is national ice cream month, and what a perfect time to cool off with a scoop of your favorite flavor (or try what other weird flavors that exist out there). Like with other foods, the exact origin of ice cream is unknown. What we do know, however, is that the origin of ice cream likely dates back a long time ago. For example, Nero of Rome was said to have enjoyed harvesting ice or snow, then flavoring it with honey or other flavorings. Alexander the Great supposedly enjoyed icy drinks that had flavorings such as honey or nectar. The first instance of ice cream being in the Unite States, however, was in a letter in 1744 (the author of the letter was a guest of Governor William Bladen.). Early presidents also had a liking towards ice cream. In the summer of 1790, George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream (keep in mind that back then $200 was a fairly good sum of money). Thomas Jefferson actually made his own recipe of ice cream too! Dolly Madison, the wife of President James Madison, served ice cream at the second inaugural ball. For a while, ice cream was only an occasional special treat, mainly for the rich. In 1843, Nancy Johnson patented the hand crank ice cream maker. About 8 years later, in 1851, Jacob Fussell built the first ice cream factory. The invention of mechanical refrigeration helped kept large amounts of ice cream cool. Improvements and new inventions in technology helped ice cream spread towards the general public.

Evans Senior Center Hosted Hamburg Healing Center

The Town of Evans Senior Center hosted Hamburg Healing Center which gave a program on the importance of maintaining the balance of your body’s chakras. There are seven main chakras located along the spine which are the wheels through which energy flows. When your chakras are blocked or depleted, energy does not flow freely. Clearing and balancing your body’s chakras will restore harmony within. The program provided information about how our bodies are in constant flux between balance and imbalance. Unless there is an apparent problem in one area of your body, the imbalances can be difficult to detect. It is good to bring awareness to your body/mind and learn its signals and clues. With society tired of utilizing medication as an alternative measure of pain management, people are looking into the holistic approach to become healthier. The Senior Center supports this approach by providing Healthy Self Class, Yoga, and speakers to expand on the many avenues of holistic medicine which can be an alternative measure to becoming a healthier you. Killers of the Flower Moon

The Town of Evans Senior Center was privileged to have Linda Drajem, retired teacher and writer, give a lecture on ”Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.” In the early 20th century, the members of the Osage Nation became the richest people per capita in the world after oil was discovered under their reservation. Then they began to be mysteriously murdered off. What happened to this tribe was a horrible crime. In 1923, the case was taken on by the fledgling FBI and J. Edgar Hoover. Author David Grann has spent nearly half a decade researching this sinister history. The rise of the FBI emerged partly from the success of this case. The breadth of the killings has never been resolved and troubles the Osage Nation to this day. History is being erased and challenged every day in our society. “Having the opportunity for a speaker to refresh and educate our minds on events that changed our history is very important,” states Veronica Sullivan, the Director of the Center. This presentation was in partnership with University Express and Evans Senior Center to provide educational opportunities for the community. Eagles Landing Hosts a Vistor

Entertainer and musician Saxman Slim visited Eagle's Landing, the summer recreation program offered through Lake Shore Community Education. He provided a musical dance/activity program for the 87 youngsters enrolled, working first with younger children and then the older ones to allow some differentiation with the music, dancing and activities. “Everyone had a great time,” says Mrs. Starks. Working the limbo event are Mason Stange and Mason Murmi, with Eagles Landing staff members Danielle Kabel, left, and Max Michalec holding the bar. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________
