People’s Choice Photo Contest at the Farnham Community Days Edward Conboy Jr. of Angola, first place winner of the People’s Choice Photo Contest at the Village of Farnham‘s 125th Anniversary Community Days Celebration.
At the Farnham Community Day Celebration held on September 2nd and 3rd at the Village of Farnham Veteran’s Park, the Brant-Farnham Historical Society sponsored a “People’s Choice” photo contest. One of the requirements limited photo entry subjects/topics to only Village of Farnham related landmarks, people and/ or events. Mr. Edward Conboy Jr. had read the suggestion/tip in the pennysaver advertisements and brought his photos early - at the very beginning of the celebration on Saturday morning. His due diligence paid off as during the two day event, he received the most votes for all three photos that he submitted; winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in the contest! Taking first place was his photo of the Farnham Watertower. (Not surprising as it is the “HIGHly” recognized landmark of the Village of Farnham!) The second place photo was of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church and his third place photo was of the Holy Cross Cemetery archway and entrance. We were pleased to have a few other photos submitted on the second day of the contest by both Linda MacFarland and Ray Dunkel. Linda’s two photos depicted views of a “Playground Committee float” made complete by lots of fun loving children wearing Farnham T-shirts in the 1998 Farnham Memorial Day Parade on Commercial Street, Farnham. Ray’s photo was of the Farnham’s Veteran’s Park flag pole with both the United States and POW flags proudly waving in the wind against a clear blue sky. All contest photos were just super and certainly captured the spirit of the Village of Farnham. Both Linda and Ray received Farnham 125th Anniversary participation ribbons for their entries. All ribbons are made in the USA and were donated by Bill and Patty Friend. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

Men’s League Champion Pete Catalfu
Giambra’s & Catalfu are Champions, Banzer get an Ace
Grandview Bay Golf Course held their League Championships during the last week of August. The Monday Night Couples League was first with Ralph and Irene Giambra facing off against the couple of Dick Dillon and Cindy Osborne. Cindy was unable to play in the final and was replaced by Peggy Battagia. Dick Dillon was unable to gain the same chemistry with Peggy that gained him the first seed and with Giambras impressive play the Giambra won their first Couples League title. The Couples Coffee Cup final pitted Bill and Judy Fuerst against Ray and Lou Kelly. Lou was unable to play due to shoulder injury and was replaced by their daughter. The back and forth match was clinched by the Kellys with gaining a stroke on the final hole and winning by two. The league celebrated their season with a banquet catered by Beachside grill with many prizes and awards given out. The Tuesday Mens League followed up a day later with their championships. The final Fore were Pete Catalfu, Dave forti, Oran Heeter and Paul Wojanik. The match with a tie and an additional hole needed to be played between Pete Catalfu and Dave forti. Pete survived the playoff and won his first mens League title. The Caddy Cup final fore were PJ Mcnaughton, PJ Gahagan, Bob Loretto and John Ziccerelli. PJ McNaughton came out on top and won the Caddy Cup 2017. Beachside grill again catered the event (busy group and they have great food) and the league celebrated by handing out prizes and awards. Bob Bartus and Dick Dillon anchored the league with all the events and scoring. Dick also was very involved in the Couples league. Sign up for both leagues are ongoing and each is looking for new members. While those leagues finished their seasons, the Grandview Bay Thursday Mens league continues on. And Tom Banzer has not stopped playing. He got an Ace (hole in one) on the 100 yard hole 3 on August 31st. He used a wedge and had Dave Tretter, Craig Owens and Eric Robinson as witnesses. MAYOR’S NOTEBOOK-September 2017 Howard M. “Hub” Frawley Fellow residents. We have so many positive things happening in the small Village of Angola that we should all be grateful for. -The County Façade Program is up and running- participants for the 50/50 matching grant through Erie County are 1. Advanced Assembly (the old A&P) across the tracks from the Village Hall on South Main Street. They have painted, put in windows and installed a new sign. 2. Garage Fitness Studio- replacing windows and doors and install signage 3. New Angola Theatre-refurbish and paint the marque sign over theatre-re pair steps, paint trim, window frames and railings. 4. Unique Sweets-add signage, lighting and fixing the overhang, gutters sid ing and trim 5. Geitner Building- update façade and add signage. These projects are moving along well. The County encourages any Main Street Business to participate, time is running out. Contact the Clerk’s office for information. -The Clean-up-fix-up project held on July 22 in the Angola Business District , brought together by a Village resident Corrine Best and over 100 volunteers turned out to be a wonderful success. It really activated positive interest in the business district. It was nice to see so many volunteers donate their time and money to help revitalize Main street. -The ABA (Angola Business Association) is going to be re-established through the assistance of local Business owner Matthew Podoba. I look forward to getting this Association moving along again. -The Village Clerk has been working hard on completing many of the pending grant projects. These are going to be a very large asset to our community: 1. Sams-Dasny Grant $111,000 - will fund playground equipment for Herman Park on Mill Street, handicap accessible sidewalks on School Street, a Mongoose Jetter for clearing out storm drains and a reimbursement for the replacement of our Village Fuel Pumps. This was a grant from former Senator Mark Grisanti and we thank Mr. Grisanti for pushing his promise through prior to him leaving office. 2. Smart Growth Fund - through Erie County CDBG- $118,000 will fund another playground for Herman Park and install a Sidewalk along Mill Street to accommodate a direct walkable opportunity from Main Street Angola straight to Herman Park Facilities. 3. Restore NY Grant through Empire State Development $299,500 will partially fund the 1882 Nickel Plate Depot relocation and preservation project. The Village of Angola acquired land on South Main Street across from the South Main Fire Hall before the Viaduct thanks to a donation from the Evans Township Lions Club and the Angola Parks and Gazebo Committee. We will relocate and preserve the 1882 Nickel Plate Depot to that parcel. Angola’s rich railway history will thrive even more when visitors from all around can experience the history of our railways here in this renovated Depot. The location will be a park-like setting, with the inside preserved as a beautiful historic location with train technology available for old and young alike. The Village of Angola is also seeking two other small Grants to help with this project. A $15,000 Legislative Initiative from Assemblyman DiPietro and a $50,000 Sams Grant from Senator Jacobs. With all funds put together, there will be little to no cost for the Village to complete this project. -Many of these projects were successful due to our former grant writer Lori Szewczyk and through ECIDA (Erie County Industrial Development Agency) -The Village has been very successful in receiving funding from so many available sources because the Public officials of our Village, those that you have elected into position, go out and work hard in reaching out to government networks to see what funding is available to help our community thrive.
-I would like to especially recognize the Village Clerk-Treasurer Linda Giancarlo- as she is preparing for retirement after serving 12 years as our Village Clerk-Treasurer. Linda worked aimlessly in the administrative, preparation, reporting, and miles of paperwork to accomplish the success of these Grants while maintaining her regular duties at the Village hall as well as donating her time to sing at the Angola Library hot dog fundraiser sponsored by Legislator John Mills that raised over $1300 for our local library. Thank you Legislator Mills. Linda has always been an asset to our community and she will be greatly missed and she has offered to continue to assist with the ongoing projects. -I look forward to working with our new Village Clerk-Treasurer Nicole Milks (former Deputy Clerk). Linda, the Village Board and I are very confident that Nicole will serve her position as Clerk-Treasurer very well. I would also like to welcome our new Deputy Clerk Tara Gabryszak. Tara is a warm welcome to our office environment. I also appreciate the hard work of our Accounts Clerk Janice Alguire. Together our office staff offers a complete and efficient service to our community. -I offer a sincere appreciation to our DPW Crew Chief Raymond Ashton and our DPW Crew for the hard work they consistently handle with care and accuracy for our residents. Whether it is trees, sidewalks, waterlines, streets, parks and more, they are an intricate part of being able to afford to do so many projects because their in-kind labor and performance acts as our share in obtaining these grants. -Our Village Attorney and Village Engineer also play a significant part in making sure everything is done without a flaw. -I have appointed a new Trustee John Omlor who is directly assisting me with working with a large retail outlet store to set up a location in the Angola business district. If successful, this will give you more opportunity to shop locally and support local business and it will be a large asset to our Village. More information with an official announcement will be coming soon. -I am happy to announce that BENLIC (the County Landbanking program) has been successfully moving along. This program, works with Erie County Real Property Tax Division in acquiring vacant distressed properties, removing past liens, purchase at auction, renovated and sell in an effort to get these open and back on the tax rolls for our communities. It is such a positive asset to our sad, abandoned properties. One completed project was 59 N Main Street. Some other properties Benlic has accumulated that are currently available on the market are located on Lake Street and on Newton Street. Call the Village office for more information. -The Village is also in receipt of a joint grant with the Town of Evans to update the Comprehensive Master Plan. This will bring the area alive with opportunity for growth and development. -The Village is also in receipt of an additional joint Grant with the Town of Evans, a Records Management Grant. The Clerks office has worked hard in recording, re-boxing and re-labeling all permanent records to be stored in a “State of the Art” records facility in the Evans Town Hall. This will secure the safety of our permanent records. I thank the Town of Evans for pursuing both of these grants and working hard at building a successful joint relationship with the Village of Angola that in the long run will save taxpayer dollars and increase tourism and growth to our area. -I look forward to continue to move this Village in a positive forward direction. There are steps to every move and sometimes, we take a step backwards, but only those who stick it out and plant their feet to build their way up the ladder will truly succeed in reaching the top. It is our community and we have to have a dream to be successful and make it happen.
Sincerely, Howard “Hub” Frawley

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 Charles Weigle (1871-1966) began to do the work of an Evangelist in 1915. His wife resented his dedication to Christ and divorced him in 1927. In those days divorce was considered scandalous. She died 5 years later in 1932. His heart was so hurt he had no where to turn but to Christ. He wrote 400 songs about the Lord but his most famous was the year his ex-wife died. He wrote: “I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus, Since I found in him a friend so strong and true; I would tell you how He changed my life completely, He did something that no other friend could do – No one ever cared for me like Jesus, There’s no other friend so kind as He; No one else could take the sin and darkness from me, O how much He cared for me.”

Holocaust Survivors Tell their Stories at the Evans Senior Center
The Evans Senior Center was honored to host a very special event on Thursday, September 7th. It was an honor to have both Holocaust Survivors, Stephen H. Lewy and Grigory Shershnevsky, at the Evans Senior Center to tell their stories and experiences. Every chair was filled as these brave gentlemen made their presentations. Stephen H. Lewy, born in Germany in 1925, spoke about his childhood in Berlin during the Nazi oppression in the 1930’s. Lewy spoke about how two rows of Hitler Youth whipped him and his Jewish schoolmates with belts, while German police were watching. Also, he was not allowed to play with non-Jewish friends. Lewy told of how his mother used a bird cage in the window to warn his father not to come home because the SS was looking to arrest him. If there was no bird cage, his father would come home. To this day, Lewy appreciates the talk they had when his father came home on the day of his bar mitzvah. “He took me aside and gave me a lecture how to take care of my second mother, in case one day he didn’t come home”, Lewy recalled. “That was his bar mitzvah speech to me.” On that day, which normally is a joyous celebration of a boy’s passage into manhood, SS troopers arrived to arrest his father. Lewy also recalled and explained the significance of Kristallnacht, the night during which the Nazi’s destroyed all the synagogues in the city and which marked the official beginning of the war against the Jews in Europe, along with others such as Poles, homosexuals, government politicians, etc. He and other Jewish youths had been locked inside a synagogue by the Nazis, who cut the gas lines. Another boy helped them to escape. Lewy survived the horrors of pre-war Nazi occupation, and was taken to France in 1939 with about 40 other children via what was known as the Kindertransport. He later came to the United States, became not only a citizen, but enrolled in the armed services. As a member of the occupation force in Germany in 1945, Lewy went door to door, arresting high-ranking Nazi Party officials. He had come full circle, and his military service later earned Lewy the Bronze Star. Mr. Lewy befriended a fellow survivor, Mr. Grigory Shershnevsky, who was born in Lithuania shortly before the German occupation in 1941. His father was active in the underground resistance movement, so his parents knew they had to smuggle their young son out of the ghetto. His mother cleaned offices and was allowed to leave the ghetto for those chores. A family friend knew of a woman who took care of Jewish and non-Jewish children alike, but the question was, how to smuggle the baby out of the ghetto. “So my mother put some rags in a cleaning bucket, put me in and covered me with some rags,” he stated. “Everything was agreed, so at some point, she just left the bucket on the sidewalk and continued walking, and Aleksandra Drzewecka, the lady who saved me, just picked up the bucket and brought [me] to her safehouse hidden from the Nazis.” He was just 7 months old. She then helped obtain a birth certificate for him, changing his Jewish name to be more Christian. He now became Stanislovas Mazijonas Kosta. Lewy and Shershnevsky’s stories have reached thousands of students and adults to tell them about their experiences, and they encourage them to embrace not only history, but to always be kind to all. You can read Stephan H. Lewy’s story in a book called “The Past is Always the Present,” written by Lillian B. Herzberg. In closing, Stephan Lewy left us with this: “My advice to you, the students – to all of us – Don’t hate. Don’t discriminate by reason of religion, country of origin or color of skin. Don’t gang up on minorities.” Contributed by Veronica Sullivan,Director of Evans Senior Center __________

Honoring Josephine Battaglia - The Village of Farnham’s Oldest Citizen
A few weeks ago, at the Village of Farnham’s 125th Anniversary celebration held on September 2nd and 3rd, Josephine Battaglia was presented with an “Oldest Farnham Citizen” button. At the September 19th board meeting, Mayor Jere Hoisington and the entire Village Board, ceremoniously recognized the Village of Farnham’s Oldest citizen - Mrs. Josephine Battaglia at 95 years of age, with a certificate and a ribbon designed special just for her! Mayor Hoisington read aloud from the certificate which stated the following: …………………... Josephine Battaglia was : · Born in Farnham on July 6, 1922 · Baptized from St. Anthony’s Church, Farnham · Attended and graduated from Farnham Public School [& Angola High School] · Married to Russell A. Battaglia (from Farnham) and together they raised three terrific children, Ronald, Joyce and Russell. · She worked in the kitchen at the Farnham School and we are told she was the best cook! [Note: Mayor Hoisington, a Farnham School Alumni, personally confirmed this statement to be true, to the laughter and delight of all those in attendance.] · She was a Village of Farnham Historian for a number of years. In 2017 she keeps busy with daily church, weekly golfing, playing cards with the girls, building jig saw puzzles (lots of them!), and feeding all the birds in the neighborhood! You can’t help but love Josephine Battaglia!! …………………... The crowd heartily applauded Josephine with a standing ovation! Attendees included her son Ronald, daughter-in-law Theresa and granddaughters Linda and Andrea. In addition to Mayor Jere Hoisington, also on hand to recognize Josephine were Farnham Village Officials: Trustee Yvonne Heller, Trustee George Cordia, Trustee Elizabeth Huffnagle, Trustee Vincent Rovnak, Village Clerk Jackie Hoisington, DPW Ellsworth Nolan, Village Code Enforcer Paul Ryerse, Village Attorney Mr. Shaw, Erie County Legislator John Mills and many village of Farnham and town of Brant residents. It was a full house to witness and acknowledge this special honor for a very special lady - Josephine Battaglia; the Village of Farnham’s Oldest Citizen.
