“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” Proverbs 18:13 The practice of this verse would help heal some of the rift in America at this time. A famous Black NBA Star said during the playoff’s halftime commentary that it is time for white people in America to start suffering. What a misinformed statement. Since the Revolutionary War to the present, 1.3 million military personnel have died in battles, wars, skirmishes and conflicts up to and including Afghanistan. Most of them were white men. White men have been suffering in America since the beginning to help secure and preserve this nation to this day. 300,000 northerners died in the Civil War to help preserve the union and free the slaves. The facts of our history are stubborn things: Black people have suffered and White people have suffered. This nation has also been a blessing to black people and white people alike. Hearing both sides before answering a matter would contribute to the love and understanding our country needs for each other.

Third Parking Sign For Purple Heart Veterans in Erie County Goes Up At Town of Evans Senior Center
On Thursday September 28th , Assemblyman Mickey Kearns and Town of Evans Senior Center Director Veronica Sullivan unveiled the new ‘ Combat Wounded Designated Parking’ space for Purple Heart veterans at the Town of Evans Senior Center in Derby. The “ Combat Wounded Designated Parking Program is run by the Wounded Warrior Family Support organization. Assemblyman Kearns is championing an effort to expand this program in WNY and encourage businesses and municipalities to sign up for a ‘ Combat Wounded Designated Parking’ sign and join the ‘ Purple Heart Parking Club’ . “ The Combat Wounded Designated Parking ‘ sign are one small way we can give back to those who have given their best for our community. I commend the Town of Evans Senior Center for signing up and designating a parking space at their building for our Purple Heart veterans, “ said Assemblyman Mickey Kearns. “ I believe this award demonstrates how our military service men and women love our country and their fellow comrades. In the field they have to count on their comrades to have their back and “ Thank God” they do. The situations our military personnel have to deal on a daily basis are frightening at times. They fight and provide our country with safety and freedom. As their country we should recognize all of them and provide these symbols of gratitude for their service as with the Purple Heart Parking sign, “ said Veronica Sullivan , Director of Town of Evans Senior Center. Assemblyman Kearns also honored Purple Heart veteran, Russell D. Ward with a NYS Certificate of Recognition for his service in the Army during the Vietnam War at the unveiling Parking sign ceremony at the Evans Senior Center. Prior to that James Trembath was a recipient of the NYS Certificate of Recognition for his service in the Army branch during the Vietnam an War. These individuals are both active in the support of acknowledging and advocating for military service personnel to be acknowledge for their time and continuing support to their communities and country. The Brant-Farnham Historical Society display highlighted the Village of Farnham’s125th Anniversary
Brant Farnham Historical Display at the Village of Farnham Community Days – Celebrating Farnham’s 125th Anniversary
Despite the windy/rainy weather, the Brant-Farnham Historical Society’s two day historical display at the 2nd Annual Community Days was successful and attracted quite a few visitors! The event was held at the Steven J. Rauker Memorial Park in the Village of Farnham on September 2nd and 3rd. This year’s event highlighted the Village of Farnham’s 125th Anniversary of Incorporation and the historical society had plenty of history related items to help with the celebration! Our display tent had collections of old photos, news articles and miscellaneous artifacts of businesses, people (including Farnham’s namesake - Leroy Farnham and our hometown celebrity/entertainers - Clint Holmes and Gayle Holmes), events, local military, churches, boy and girl scouts, post office, musical bands, Ladies Drum Corp., the Fire Department, the railroad, the trolley and of course the two Farnham schools (old and new). At our recent historical meetings, we had been gathering together many items to create more than 12 different themed collages and photo books for an interesting display of 125 years of the Farnham village. For the display, Mike Graci loaned us his “Farnham Hotel” cigar box and Bill Graci loaned us his 118 year old framed certificate from the U.S. Postmaster General, honoring the Farnham Postmaster of 1899 - Mr. Henry Kuenze. Joyce Cureo had loaned us her 1954 and 1955 Farnham Baseball scrapbooks. We also had many donated items on hand such as boy and girl scout photo albums from Martin Laurie, various Farnham Fire Dept. pins from Jere Hoisington and Nancy Hornburg and fifteen original Farnham school commencement programs from Don and Diane Mogavero. Additionally on display, was the 2017 Village of Farnham’s State of New York Resolution #2625, as presented to the Village by Senator Chris Jacobs. In other words - WE HAD LOTS OF STUFF!!! Our most popular display area always seems to be the Farnham School. We had the signature photo frames on hand as we are continuously collecting signatures of all Farnham School Alumni. On Saturday, someone stopped in our display tent, because his greatgrandmother Josephine Schifano, had attended the Farnham School. He wondered if we had any photos of her. We looked and while (to our knowledge) we did not have a photo, we did find her name listed in a 1942 commencement program - in fact, she was secretary of her 8th grade class! He was thrilled to see this small piece of his great-grandmother’s life. Since January, we have diligently worked on and have now published, a history book in commemoration of Farnham’s 125th Anniversary. The Farnham history book was ready for the weekend festivities and over 55 copies were distributed in just two days! This book was made possible with help from all who submitted photos and information - it’s a 209 page labor of love and collaboration of efforts, (and “YES” we have more copies available.) Also, during the weekend, the historical society held two free raffles: The winner of the Railroad train puzzle was Anna Erickson of Lakeview. The winner of the Arcadia publishing Co. book - Greater Erie Trolleys authored by Kenneth C. Springirth was Marcia Niedzwiecki of Angola. We also had give-away items of Farnham water tower posters and postcards. As is common with each of our displays, the historical society had a guest book on hand to sign; to document those in attendance for our current day local history. In fact, this is the same book we used to log the visitors for the 100 year Centennial celebration-a short 25 years ago! In conclusion, we had two days of history in the making. We all gathered together in Farnham’s Steven J. Rauker Memorial Park, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of Erie County’s smallest village and hidden gem - our village of Farnham, NY! P School Buddy Bench
Miss Lily Katra is in Grade 5 at Southtowns Catholic School and over the summer, she attended Vacation Bible School at St John Paul II Parish. Each day they watched a short video on how their faith helped them accomplish new things. One video was about 3 boys and how they made recess fun for everyone with the creation of the Buddy Bench. If a child feels left out at recess, they just need to sit on the bench and someone will come over and ask them to play. Lily was so inspired that she wrote a letter to Ace Hardware in Derby and asked if they could donate a bench. They quickly replied that they would love to be part of her project. With help from her parents, Lily painted the bench and on Friday, September 29, she explained the Buddy Bench to the whole school. The SCS Buddy Bench will sit in the school playground and hopefully no one will fell left out at recess. At precisely 9AM on Saturday morning September 2nd, the nationally sanctioned 5K race began, with the starting line just inside of the Farnham’s Steven J. Rauker Memorial Park. The route continued down Commercial Street towards Route 20, and then returned back to the starting line. Saturday’s 5K race was the kickoff event for the two day community day celebration in honor of Farnham’s 125th Anniversary of Incorporation. Energetic race coordinators Marissa Graci and Evan Russell (both residents of the Village of Farnham) worked tirelessly and closely with the Farnham Veteran’s Committee to organize, advertise and promote the race. On the day of the race, there were many supportive Village of Farnham residents stationed along the 5K route distributing water and plenty of encouragement! In addition, five local fire volunteer fire companies - Farnham, Angola, Lake Erie Beach, Evans Center and Brant - were there to help with traffic coordination and to ensure a safe race environment for all participants. This was the first annual 5K race for Erie County’s smallest village, with a better than great turnout of 38 participants from all over Western New York and one gentleman from the state of New Mexico! The top three winners of the 5K race were Curt Mancuso with a time of 21:57, Heather Burger with a time of 23:27 and Christopher Adamczyk - a very close third at 23:30! Each of the top winners received trophies. There were also winners in Women’s and Men’s age categories of: 18 and under, 19-30, 31-40 and 51 and up. Each winner in these categories received medals. The 2017 profits of $75.00 will be rolled over toward next years 5K race and in 2018, all the money raised will be donated to the Steven J. Rauker Memorial Park. Sponsors of the race in one form or another were: Turner Construction, Wegmans, William Trask, REM Tronics, Burger King, Big Indian Smoke Shop, Save-A-Lot - Silver Creek, and Jim’s Lawn Care Service. Shown in the photos are the runners and walkers - just as the 5K race began. The two smiling 5K walkers are Farnham residents David and Judy Pruett - and...in both photos, you can’t help but notice the Farnham’s signature blue Water Tower landmark in the skyline, watching over the participants of the village of Farnham’s first annual 5k Race! Lake Shore Freshman Academy Kicks Off Year Right
The Lake Shore Freshman Academy welcomed and embraced 185 new freshmen this September using teambuilding to help them become acclimated to high school life. It’s a great way for freshmen to understand that they are part of one team-the class of 2021. On this team, everyone matters, no one falls through the cracks, and every student is expected to graduate with their classmates in 2021. A big part of the Academy's acclimation process is teambuilding and cooperative learning. On Monday, October 2nd, all freshmen participated in the Annual Freshman Teambuilding Boot Camp where they had to work together with their teachers in various fun, physical, and mental challenges. Students bonded together singing the Lake Shore Fight Song and then posed for a Class of 2021 picture for the yearbook. This event came right on the heels of their first official Lake Shore Homecoming. Students participated in the school’s hallway decorating challenge earning them third-place overall, and most freshmen attended the annual Homecoming Dance. The Freshman Academy believes involvement is a huge key to student success in high school, so no time is wasted getting students involved in fun, positive programs that encourage student participation. Involved students statistically enjoy and come to school more, and when students have better attendance, they have better grades. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________

A.J. Schmidt Students Receive Donation from Hilbert College
Hilbert College took A. J. Schmidt Elementary under their wing this past summer and held a school supply drive during their orientation. The result was a bountiful donation of supplies including book bags, books, and personal items such as hairbrushes, hair ties, hats, mittens, t-shirts, sweatpants, and undergarments. The college students also gave each child a beautifully handwritten note of encouragement to cherish. A.J. Schmidt’s partnership with Hilbert College started under the direction of Denise Harris, former Hilbert Vice Provost for Student Engagement, and has branched out to include Jim Sturm, Vice Provost for Leadership, and Rachel Wozniak, Assistant Director at the center for Career and Community Engagement. Members of the faculty, staff, and students of Hilbert College displayed the values of hope, peace, service, joy, integrity, respect, compassion, and vision. The A.J. Schmidt community clearly witnessed these values through this generous drive. Giving back to the community is a win-win for everyone. The students of Hilbert College gave to our little ones, and the students of A.J. Schmidt benefitted from the generosity of others. Donors and those accepting the generous gifts are validating that every day actions make an impact in ways they may never have realized. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________
