The Village of Farnham Pays Tribute to Our Veterans

The Village of Farnham held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Memorial Park on Commercial Street. Services were held on the 11th day of the 11th month beginning at 11am. Mayor Jere Hoisington welcomed all prior to inviting Deacon Lynn Whitworth of Holy Cross Lutheran Church to lead us all in prayer. Deacon Lynn asked everyone to take time to remember the meaning of this day, reminding us that; “this is ‘not just another day off’, we need to be sure to remember those who have made great sacrifices in our behalf.” After the opening prayer, Mayor Hoisington again stepped to the podium and, during his speech shared the following thoughts: “On this day, at events like this all over the country, we commit ourselves to remembering and fighting for our Veterans. They never stopped fighting for us...and so many, gave their last dying breath for our freedom”. The guest speaker that morning was Sr. Chief Neil I. Ross, USNR retired. His speech was a great tribute to those who have served. Neil relayed how it felt to be far away from home in the service, missing family, “missing birthdays, including your own”, holidays, family Local Veterans in attendance for the Farnham Veterans Day Services (Ldinners and for some R): Cordaro Amaya, David Pruett, “even being away from Dennis Rubeck and Neil I. Ross home during the birth of their children”. Our Veterans sacrificed all this and more, for us. Neil also said that “We do not know, all the Veterans, we ‘owe’, all the Veterans.” Patriotic songs such as THE STAR SPANGELED BANNER and Lee Greenwood’s GOD BLESS Brant Police Chief Donald Hepkins and Officer John Lopez were at the THE USA were played via audio equipment - and Farnham Veterans Day service. we all sang along proudly. With hand on heart, a few emotional teardrops fell - especially when the American flags were placed at the base of the Veterans monument by our Veterans and members of the Farnham Ladies Auxiliary. Deacon Lynn was asked to close the services with the benediction. Following the final prayer, Mayor Hoisington reminded us that refreshments were available at the Village Hall on Commercial Street. As we left the services, a key piece of Mayor Jere Hoisington’s speech remained in our hearts and minds. “It’s now up to us to honor those still with us, by remembering and showing gratitude for all they have given for this Great Nation. High School Athletic Addition Ribbon-Cutting & Tours Teams of Lake Shore High School Leadership students were on hand to lead tours of guests who attended the ribbon-cutting for the school's new athletic addition. For alumni, it also was a trip down memory lane as they reminisced about what the school used to look like: what's now the library used to be the gym, what's now a spacious, bright main office used to be cramped and dark. The athletic facilities were deemed "awesome" and "amazing."

Legislator Mills Honors Mercy Flight as it Celebrates 40 Years of Providing Life-Saving Services to the WNY Community

Erie County Legislator John Mills recently honored Mercy Flight as it celebrates 40 years of providing life-saving services to the Western New York Community. Mercy Flight is an independent, not-for-profit provider of air medical transport and provides rapid, safe and costeffective delivery of expert emergency response teams. Mercy Flight was first established in 1981 by Douglas H. Baker who owned LaSalle Ambulance and had a desire to reach more patients in need. As a result, Mercy Flight was the first air-medical service in New York and one of the first of its kind in the United States. Mercy Flight is headquartered in Buffalo with bases strategically placed throughout Western New York—enabling the organization to swiftly serve patients from Niagara Falls to Rochester to Northwestern Pennsylvania and beyond. Mercy Flight’s average cost per mission is $1,420 but performs its services without regard to its patient’s ability to pay which has led the organization to forgive more than $1.6 million of patient debt in the last year. Legislator Mills said, “I want to thank everyone over at Mercy Flight for the incredible work they do. I was recently given a tour by Vice President Scott Wooten and Flight Paramedic Thomas LaBelle and I cannot express in words just how much I am impressed by the organization—they are at the forefront of medical technology. I left Mercy Flight headquarters with the comfort of knowing they are there in case of any and all emergencies if need be. Angola Public Library Annual Harvest Dinner Fundraiser

The Angola Public Library held its Annual Harvest Dinner Fundraiser on October 16, 2021 at the Evans Center Fire Hall. The original date of the banquet was scheduled for October 23rd, but was moved up a week because of early voting. A scrumptious “Thanksgiving” turkey dinner was prepared and served by Cala’s Kitchen and Catering of Derby, N.Y. It is a time honored tradition that desserts of pies, cakes and cookies (and more than a few are still home baked!) are provided by the Library Board Trustees and members of various community groups. There is an unspoken competition of sorts to see whose dessert is selected from the dessert table before all the rest. The banquet tables were decorated with outstanding Halloween/Library theme displays and each of the centerpieces were prepared and designed by Judith “Judy” Woodman. Judy retired from the Angola Library a few years ago; retired yes, but she still manages to help out with various Library events such as this. It’s always a surprise to see what Judy comes up with each year - we are never disappointed and we are always amazed at her creativity! At the end of the evening, attendees are eager to win the table center pieces as they are each unique and lovely. The theme basket raffle is an ever popular segment of the evening’s fundraising activities and this year over forty-five baskets were donated for the event. A beautiful Afghan was handmade by Library Board Trustee/Treasurer Jacqueline Haderer for a separate raffle and the Friends of the Angola Library donated an item for a door prize raffle. A portion of the proceeds from the raffles, theme baskets and the dinner ticket sales help to defray the various costs/expenses for the Harvest Dinner and venue. A bittersweet moment of the evening was the recognition of Jacqueline Haderer for her 37 years of service and dedication to the Angola Public Library as a Trustee including 35 years as Treasurer. With heavy hearts it was mentioned that she will be moving out of state soon and so a special dedication plaque was presented to her on behalf of the Angola Library Director Jennifer Page, the entire Library staff, and her fellow Library Board Trustees. The dedication comments were made and the plaque presented by Emcee and Library Board President Jack Kuebler. Over 75 persons were in attendance at the event including Legislator John Mills, Village of Angola Mayor Tom Whelan, Village of Angola Trustees Valerie Stonitsch and John Dybowski, Town of Evans Councilman Michael Schraft and Town of Evans Justice Moira Cooper. The Angola Public Library Staff and Trustees were extra pleased with the success of the evening and the funds raised will certainly be put to good use. Of late we have been painting walls and installing new carpeting. Our Library Director and Staff have been “hands on” with all of the renovations. We have had numerous compliments regarding the “Library Bookshelf “ Mural that since early summertime adorns the “Lake Street” side of the Library building as well as the new gold lettering. Generous monetary donations to the Library were used for this beautification project which was spearheaded by Trustee Sally Needham with full support of all the Trustees. Jack Kuebler, our fearless leader and President with his unending energy and enthusiasm keeps our projects on track with his grant writing experience and his dedication to details of contracts, deadlines and Public Library requirements.
