Foods that help fight cancer
W
hile no single food or ingredient can prevent people from getting cancer, research has shown a link between excess body fat and various cancers. A poor diet that's high in fat can contribute to excess body fat, which the American Institute for Cancer Research has linked to higher risks for developing cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and rectum, and gallbladder, among others. The AICR notes that research on foods that fight cancer is ongoing, but the following are some of the foods that can play a role in cancer prevention. Apples Apples are a good source of fiber, which can help men and women lower their cancer risk. Dietary fiber can increase feelings of fullness, which reduces the likelihood that people will overeat. Men and women who do not overeat are less likely to accumulate the excess body fat that increases their risk for various cancers. In addition, apples' dietary fiber contains pectin, a polysaccharide that bacteria in the stomach can use to produce compounds that protect colon cells. Broccoli Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable, and nearly all cruciferous vegetables, which get their name because their four-petal flowers resemble a cross, or crucifer, are great sources of vitamin C. Broccoli also is a great source of the B vitamin folate as well as potassium. The AICR notes that studies have shown folate helps to maintain healthy DNA and keep cancer-promoting genes inactive. But

men and women should speak with their physicians regarding how much folate to include in their diets, as animal studies have suggested that high amounts of folate may promote development of certain types of cancer, including colon cancer. Cranberries Like apples, cranberries are high in dietary fiber and vitamin C. Diets high in foods containing vitamin C have been linked to a reduced risk for cancer of the esophagus. In addition, studies have shown that vitamin C protects cells' DNA by trapping free radicals, which can damage the body, and inhibiting the formation of substances called carcinogens, which are capable of causing cancer in living tissue. Legumes Legumes include kidney and black beans, yellow split peas and red lentils. Dry beans and peas are great sources of fiber and good sources of protein, and each also make excellent sources of folate. In addition to their ability to contribute to the protection of colon cells, legumes also contain various phytochemicals, which researchers feel may decrease chronic inflammation, a risk factor for many cancers. In addition, these phytochemicals may increase the self-destruction of cancer cells. While there are no magic foods that can guarantee men and women won't one day develop cancer, there are many foods that research has shown are capable of reducing a person's risk of developing this potentially deadly disease. More information on cancer-fighting foods is available at www.aicr.org.

n injury or illness can impact a person's mobility and ability to perform everyday activities. While medicine and other treatments can help the situation, physical therapists are often sought to help individuals get back on track.
who accepts your insurance. · Check your insurance benefits to determine how much coverage you have for physical therapy. You may be limited to a certain number of sessions or have no restrictions at all.
The American Physical Therapy Association says physical therapists examine each individual patient and develop plans using treatment techniques to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent further disability. In addition, physical therapists work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellnessoriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
· Many physical therapists are board certified in one speciality. They have passed tests and have documented hours treating certain conditions. This can be helpful if you require a pediatric specialists or one who has expertise with the back or neck. Any physical therapist or therapist's assistant should be qualified and licensed.
Physical therapists frequently work with patients' larger medical teams to provide customized care depending on patients' needs. Physical therapists may begin their treatment plans by gathering patients' histories and reviewing any tests and imaging the patients may have had. This information, combined with physical examinations and studies of the injuries or illnesses, will help physical therapists to establish treatment plans for the patients. Men and women who have been told they need physical therapy can heed to the following tips as they look for therapists to work with. · Get a referral from your primary doctor or orthopedist. With some insurance plans, a referral will be needed for treatment. Otherwise, use your insurance plan's provider directory to find a physical therapist
· Ask if you will be the physical therapist's only patient at an appointment. Some treat one individual at a time while others may see two or three patients at a time.

· Find out who will be treating you. You may be assigned the same therapist each time. If you are getting services at a therapy group, you may have a different therapist for each visit. · Always ask questions before and after a treatment so you can continue to work on the healing process on your own and so you know which activities are safe, which should change as your treatment progresses. Physical therapists play an integral role in helping restore patients' mobility and helping them avoid further injury so that patients can maximize their quality of life.

Safe and healthy ways to shed those extra pounds M
aintaining a healthy weight is a great way to avoid sickness and disease. According to the Obesity Education Initiative, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, as people become overweight and obese, their risk for developing a host of ailments, including coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and hypertension, increases. But the consequences of being overweight or obese are not only physical. Psychological side effects like anxiety and low self-esteem have been linked to overweight and obesity as well. With such serious consequences linked to being overweight, it's no wonder so many men and women are looking to shed pounds. As adults embark on their weight loss journeys, they can expect to encounter a host of "miracle" solutions to weight loss that will promise skinnier waistlines seemingly overnight. But the best way to lose weight is to do so safely and nutritiously. · Avoid short-term diets. Many adults know someone who has experience with a "get-thin-quick" diet that promises to produce slimmer waistlines in a matter of
days or weeks. While such diets might actually be able to deliver on their promises, short-term diets rarely lead to long-term weight loss. When attempting to lose weight, men and women should want to shed pounds and keep those pounds off. Short-term diets may require dieters to make unreasonable sacrifices to produce rapid weight loss. But such sacrifices can rarely be made over the long-haul, and doing so might even be unhealthy. Approach your diet as a long-term commitment that requires a lifestyle change, not temporary and difficult-to-maintain restrictions. · Eat only when you're hungry. Eating only when you're hungry may sound obvious, but many people eat as an emotional response to difficult situations, while others may eat as a way of dealing with boredom. If you routinely respond to stress by eating, find a healthier way of coping, whether it's going to the gym for a workout or taking the dog for a walk. In addition, don't respond to boredom with food. If boredom is setting in, pick up a book or call a friend and plan an activity together. You may be surprised to learn how much weight you can lose when you limit eating to only those times when you are truly hungry.
· Eat at home. Even though many restaurants now provide calorie information on their menus, dining out does not afford adults the opportunity to control their diets as much as eating at home does, as dieters can control each and every ingredient that goes into their meals when eating at home. · Don't forget to exercise. A healthy, low-calorie diet is only half the formula to healthy and sustainable weight loss. Adults looking to shed weight also must commit to routine exercise if they want their weight loss to be both healthy and lasting.
Men and women, especially those people who are considerably overweight, should take things slowly at first, gradually committing to more vigorous exercise as they lose weight and their body grows more acclimated to daily exercise.
Losing weight can be difficult, but adults who commit to healthy and nutritious weight loss are more likely to lose weight and keep the weight off than those who look for quick fixes.

Blood Orange Salmon with Chickpea & Cucumber Salad INGREDIENTS
2 5oz. skinless salmon fillets, room temperature 1 15.5oz. can chickpeas, drained & rinsed 1 blood orange, sliced into rounds 1 bunch fresh dill, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cucumber, peel, sliced length wise, deseed & slice (“u” shape) 1 lemon, quartered & deseeded 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1 bunch thyme 1/2 cup goat cheese, crumbled
PREPARATION
1. Preheat oven to 450°F. 2. Pat salmon fillets dry and season with salt and pepper. Lightly oil a sheet pan and place half of the orange sliced and half of the thyme sprigs in a single layer in the middle of the pan. Place the seasoned salmon on top of the orange and thyme, pushing the fillets together. Top with the remaining blood orange and remaining thyme. Drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Place in oven and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, or until cooked through 3. While salmon roasts, in a large bowl, combine the cucumber, chickpeas, garlic, as much of the onion as you fancy, half of the goat cheese and half of the dill. Toss with juice of all 4 lemon wednges and a little olive oil; season with salt and pepper.
Chicken Totilla Soup INGREDIENTS
8 corn tortillas, halved and thinly sliced olive oil cooking spray 1 Tbsp. canola oil 3 Anaheim or poblano peppers, diced 1 medium onion, diced 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed & cubed 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 14oz. can diced tomatoes with green chiles 2 Tbsp. lime juice 1/2 cup low-fat shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
PREPARATION
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Spread tortilla strips in an even layer on a baking sheet and coat with cooking spray. Bake until browned and crispy, 12 to 15 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add peppers and onion and cook, stirring, until the onion begins to soften, 3 to 5 minutes. Add cumin and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add chicken, broth, tomatoes and their juice. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in lime juice. Serve each portion topped with some of the baked tortilla strips, cheddar and cilantro.
4. Divide the roasted salmon, blood orange slices and chickpea salad between 2 plates. Garnish with remaining dill and goat cheese.
Molten Chocolate Mug Cake INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup regular all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp. Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1 Tbsp. mini chocolate chips pinch of salt 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk 2 Tbsp. pure maple syrup or sweetener of your choice NOTE: If using granulated sugar, a tad more milk may be needed. 1 Tbsp. melted coconut oil
Cauliflower Fried ‘Rice’ INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. sesame oil 2 eggs 1 small head cauliflower 1/2 cup frozen mixed vegetables 2 green onions 3 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper 3 Tbsp. gluten-free Tamari or soy sauce
PREPARATION
1. In a large mug, combine flour, cocoa powder, chocolate chips and salt. Stir in milk and sweetner and then mix in the oil until well incorporated. If you mix melted coconut oil in with the cold milk it will harden into large chunks. Mix in the oil at the end, after the milk has been mixed in. 2. Place the mug in the mocrowave and heat for 45 seconds to one minute. Time may vary depending on your microwave. The cake should be mostle cooked with a pocket of chocolate sauce in the middle. If the cake if too gooey for you, heat in 15 second intervals until it’s cooked to your liking. It doesn’t contain eggs so there is no harm in eating it undercooked.
*NOTE: Dish will not be gluten-free if using soy sauce
PREPARATION
1. Combine 1 tsp. sesame oil with eggs in a bowl then whisk to combine and set aside. Chop cauliflower head into big chunks then send through a food processor fitted with the grating attachment. Alternatively you could grate the cauliflower on a box grater. Measure out 4 cups grated cauliflower then save the rest for another use. 2. Heat remaining 1 Tbsp. sesame oil in a wok or large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add cauliflower, green onions, and frozen mixed vegetables then stir fry until cauliflower is just beginning to turn tender, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic, season with salt and pepper, and then continue to stir fry until garlic is fragrant, 30 seconds or so. 3. Push mixture to the sides of the wok to create an opening in the center then add the eggs and scramble. Toss mixture to combine then drizzle in gluten-free Tamari and mix again to combine. Serve hot.

experience scintillations, or bright flashing lights or flickering. Wavy lines surrounding an enlarging blind spot (scotoma) also can occur. Blind spots may start small but quickly grow bigger and move across one's field of vision.
hile many people are familiar with the term "migraine headache," few may have experienced an ocular migraine. Ocular migraines, sometimes referred to as "eye migraines," are often harmless and may disappear rather quickly.
Sometimes an ocular migraine is accompanied by a migraine headache and certain symptoms, such as light sensitivity and nausea, that are associated with migraine headaches. The National Institutes of Health notes that, if an ocular migraine is accompanied by a headache, the pain from the migraine is often located on the same side of the head as the eye that is experiencing the ocular migraine.
The organization All About Vision defines ocular migraines as painless, temporary visual disturbances that usually affect one eye. Ocular migraines can be disturbing because of their symptoms. People experiencing ocular migraines may
Migraines in general are not well understood, and the same can be said for ocular migraines. The causes ocular migraines is not exactly known, but it is thought to be related to constricted blood vessels in the eye, possibly in the retina.
W
The Mayo Clinic says that while visual sensations associated with ocular migraines can induce anxiety and interfere with certain activities, the condition usually is not considered serious and can ease up within 20 to 30 minutes. Some people do not even realize their symptoms may be migraine-related because of the lack of associated headache. Several more serious conditions can cause similar symptoms to the relatively benign ocular migraine. Men and women who frequently experience visual disturbances
should consult with an expert who can rule out other ailments. Everything from an embolism to tumors of the eye to optic neuropathy may produce symptoms similar to ocular migraines. If an ocular migraine is a one-time occurrence, sufferers need not worry. However, any vision problems should be investigated fully to determine if any underlying conditions are present and to safeguard against any long-term vision loss.

Do You Suffer From Vertigo?
Do you experience a spinning sensation that lasts for a number of seconds when you roll over in bed, get out of bed, when you bend down to put on your shoes, or when you tip your head back to look upward? If so, then you may have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), also known as positional vertigo. Patients who have positional vertigo may benefit by treatment known as the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). The procedure takes only a few minutes, and studies have shown that it is effective about 80% of the time in completely resolving positional vertigo. The cost of CRP is only $20
If you would like to schedule a CRP diagnostic/treatment session, call our office at 627-7759 For more information about positional vertigo or other services we offer, please visit our website. All fees are posted on our website.
