Located 500km north of Perth near Northampton, Kapari Angus is at the gateway to some amazing natural beauty touristhotspots. Spectacular Kalbarri gorges, both coastal and along the Murchison River, including a breathtaking Skywalk structure, and the Pink Lake near Port Gregory, are about an hour’s drive from Kapari Further north, the World Heritage area of Shark Bay, Monkey Mia and the Francois Peron Peninsula have some of the most spectacular water and landscape colours on the Coral Coast. Further north again, at Exmouth, you can swim with the whale sharks

At Kapari, the most northern of the three family properties and 30km north of Northampton, the Sudlow family has been in the Angus seed stock industry for 50 years At Ladyland 10 km north of Northampton, Liz’s family have farmed sheep and grain for 120 years

The Sudlows’ focus has consistently been on combining the right mix of Angus genetics to produce animals which will perform in the most challenging environments With an average winter rainfall of 300 mm, the Winter season is short, but the warmth of the Midwest region, usually results in quick growth of quality pastures

The long, hot summers where temperatures can regularly hit above 40 degrees C for extended periods, combine to make an ideal testing ground for new genetics

The goals have fundamentally remained the same over the history of the stud Selection pillars are temperament, structural soundness, constitution and use of EBVs The cow herd is run under commercial conditions At weaning, our calves are turned onto lupin/cereal stubbles and perennial grasses During winter, our cattle are run on clover-based pastures, with minimal feeding, once the season has broken.

If you’re interested in history, the Northampton region was one of the first areas in WA to develop successful farming and mining industries, assisted by a convict settlement at Port Gregory Northampton is the location of the first WA government railway line from Geraldton, built in 1879, to service lead and copper mining. Visitors always welcome!

Brad Kupsch +61 0428276054

Peter Kupsch +61 0427276054

@tarabulls

kupschfarming@gmailcom

Black Tara Angus was formed by the Kupsch family after purchasing the core cows from the White Lakes Angus herd dispersal in 2008

The Angus stud is part of a diverse agricultural business, which includes Winter Grain production (Wheat, Lupins, Canola, Barley) Our cropping season consists of sowing in April-May and harvesting October through to December, as well as a Limousin Stud (Tara Limousin Stud, est 1996), and a small, branded beef label, that supplies direct to restaurants and households

The commercial cattle are typically surplus Angus stud females mated back to Limousin Bulls To ensure the best genetics are being continually introduced to our herd, we have an AI and ET program which runs in June

The farm was purchased in 1987 by Peter and Celine and is now run in partnership with son Brad and a skilled team of 3 employees over 4 properties within the Midwest region Our soil type is typically a lighter sand, fading into some better loamy gravels

The Kupsch family currently run approx 375 breeders (stud and commercial) and sell around 65 bulls per year We sell as part of a multi breed annual multi-vendor sale format at the Gingin Bull Sale in early March

Tara Beef currently direct markets around 100 Angus x Limousin calves each year, at around 12 months old, at 260kg carcass weight (pending processor capacities)

We calve down in Autumn from March to April and Winter/Spring calving is in August The calves are weaned in January

Black Tara is located 35 hours north of Perth along the stunning Coral Coast of Western Australia Dongara Port Denison is the perfect spot for a scenic day trip Head north along the coast on Indian Ocean Drive or take the inland route of Brand Highway

Regardless of the route you take, there will be something to impress everyone. If heading along the Brand Highway, make sure to call into the Western Flora Caravan Park 60kms south of Dongara and discover the thousands of species of wildflowers throughout the Northern Heathlands plus honeyeaters, frogs, water birds, kangaroos, emus and insects If travelling along Indian Ocean Drive, call into Nambung National Park to see the world-renowned Pinnacles, do a Western Rock Lobster Tour and dine at the popular Lobster Shack in Cervantes, skydive in Jurien Bay or do a Sea Lion Tour in Greenhead

Red Hat Angus

141 Clune Rd, Cullalla, WA

Mark Hattingh +61 0419399557

mark@amhattinghcomau

Red Hat Angus was formed when sole owner, Mark Hattingh purchased his pick of 5 cows from the Strathtay Angus stud, Narrogin, dispersal sale in 2014 The cows were chosen because they were high producing, fertile and docile animals

Mark Hattingh now runs 50 registered breeders on his 500 acre Cullalla property which is predominantly sand with some wet flats and paperbark / redgum country The area receives on average 650mm rainfall

Mark has been breeding cattle his whole life but started his beef journey in South Africa where he ran a Charolais stud with his father and mother for 35 years The Hattingh family were the first to introduce the Charolais breed to the country Mark then began to run Angus in South Africa, before moving to Australia and settling in WA Mark has been breeding Angus cattle for over 50 years

To broaden the genetic pool of his herd, Mark uses ET and AI wherever possible, sourcing top semen from across the world When looking for bulls, high growth, structural correctness and docility are at the top of his criteria The genetics utilised in the breeding program are from leading international and Australian sires

Mark breeds bulls for private sale on farm and has a network of local and statewide buyers and sells 7-10 annually The bulls are bred with the commercial beef producer front of mind When selecting bulls to sell, Mark firstly checks the phenotypical look of the animal and then pairs this with strong performance figures to build his sale team

Red Hat calve down in Autumn to Spring from March to July and wean at 7 months

Red Hat is located 15 hours from Perth, just north of Gingin, making this an ideal day trip The small town is known for its 9000 head capacity, Cullalla Feedlot

Western Australia’s biggest cattle feeding facility Koojan Downs, is also near by in the neighbouring town in the Moora Dandaragan Shire

Koojan Downs is designed to supply 60,000, 100day grain finished cattle each year to Harvest Road’s processing facility Harvey Beef

The Ardcairnie Angus stud is a family-owned and operated seed-stock and commercial Angus enterprise run by Joe and Jessica Dewar and Joe’s father Frank Dewar The farm is located 100kms northofPerth, ontheMooreRiveratGuilderton

The Dewars are a pioneering farming family that have been breeding cattle since settling in Gingin, Western Australia in the 1840's, making Joe a seventhgenerationfarmer

The opportunity to expand their enterprise occurred in 2020, when Ardcairnie Angus stud was placed on the market

As long-time commercial cattle breeders, purchasing Ardcairnie Angus stud was a good opportunity to continue our goal of breeding high quality cattle The Dewars purchased the entire herd of 400 registered breeders

The Ardcairnie Angus stud journey began in 1985 when Jim and Pam McGregor of Kojonup established the stud Joe and Frank shared a similar breeding philosophy to that of Jim and Pam, and that is to present structurally sound animals in working condition to increase their chance of a long and fertile life and thrive in tough environments

The cattle have been bred to withstand unfavourable seasonal conditions without the need for extra supplementary feeding or maintenance No excuses are given for those who are not up to the challenge

The Dewars also run 500 commercial Angus breeders and a flock of 1000 merino ewes The calves are predominantly sent into the backgrounding and feeder markets, with some cattle fed on farm for the supermarket trade

The cattle are run across 36,000 acres, with some 400 kms between the north and south properties Most of the cattle are on the coast where the soil type is sand over limestone

Ardcairnie runs along the Moore River and Indian Ocean with picturesque limestone outcrops across the farm There are many vantage points on the property which overlook the pristine ocean and river with the area wellknown for its white sandy beaches, perfect for fishing, kayaking, surfing and boating

Guilderton is a charming coastal town on the Moore River Only an hour drive from Perth, makes this tourist destination a popular one for day-trippers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city

Esslemont Angus stud – after “Esslemont”, the clanMcLeodrelativesinAberdeen,Scotland

Anniebrook is a rural locality in the Busselton / Margaret River area in the South West region of Western Australia, located on Geographe Bay Esslemont Angus is just under 3 hours south of Perth (241 kms) or 23 minutes from the Busselton airport The area is known for horticulture, dairy, beef and tourism, with many wineries, restaurants andboutiquebreweries

Principals: Lindsay – prior to agriculture, worked in food and pharmaceuticals industries; and Allison trainedandworkedasaSocialWorkerandNurse

For the last 55 years, we have been involved with semen and embryo production, AI and training overseas students in artificial breeding techniques In 1978 The Wolrige’s established WA’s first licensedquarantineexportfacility

The farm has a hundred year history of potato growing – sandy loam over clay within a drained swamp The property was deficient in everything except phosphate Regular soil testing with judicious fertilizer application precluded the necessityforirrigationorcropping Thelocationisa Mediterranean climate, with winter rainfall –average750mm

The best growing period is May – November. Herbicides are only used for firebreaks Vaccinations for relevant local disease control is practiced and parasitoids used only on individual animals that obviously and visually require attention In exceptionally good seasons some hay is sold, particularly if there is a carry over from the previousyear

Esslemont Angus stud – began in 2000, with the purchase of 5 yearling maiden heifers from the well renowned Blackrock Angus Stud The breedingphilosophyadoptedwastocreateaherd primarily from objective measurement Data from The National Beef Recording scheme (NBRS) and subsequently Breedplan EBV’s with Indexes was usedtocreateEsslemont’sbreedingprinciples Itis essentially a closed herd - genetics sourced from outside semen, embryos and home bred bulls Present selection pressure is on IMF, Docility, acceptable feet and leg structure in conjunction withhighABIindexes

Heavy stocking rate (usually around 100 head on 40 hectares) on grass and hay is a primary profit driving practice for fulfilling the herds genetic ambitions of the herd The cattle are usually in store to forward store condition and calves are weanedat150daysold

Several bulls have been accepted over the years into the Angus Sire Bench Marking Program, with results reinforcing confidence in Breedplan and subsequently resulting in semen sales The herd consists of usually young HBR cows and yearling stock, with occasional commercial embryo recipients

Mason Valley Angus is a family owned and operated Angus stud and commercial enterprise located in picturesque Youngs

Siding on the Great Southern Coast Mason Valley is run by Darren and Narelle Burrow, with their son, Connor, and daughter, Lara

Connor and Lara are heavily involved with the stud as well as a small amount of showing cattle, competing in parades and judging competitions Darren and Narelle believe it’s crucial for Connor and Lara to be involved, for networking purposes and learning from industry leaders

Mason Valley Angus was founded in 1997 with the purchase of a small number of both Black and Red Angus females from the Teranga Angus Stud

In the years to come, Darren and Narelle were able to increase their numbers when larger lease properties became available in the region More females were purchased from the Kimberley Red Angus and Strathtay Studs

The property is now 550 acres and is predominantly made up of sand over gravel with some rich clay loam / karri loam country, and receives 800 mm of rain per year

Mason Valley began selling predominantly Red Angus bulls until the market for these declined and inquiry for black lines increased Mason Valley now sell purely black Angus bulls to meet their clients’ demands

In 2017, Mason Valley started to run a commercial herd alongside their stud, which gave Darren and Narelle a good opportunity to test and prove their breeding Mason Valley now run a 50 head commercial herd consisting of Angus, Charolais and Shorthorn

Annually, synchronised fixed time AI done by Connor, is used to join approximately 75% of the Mason Valley herd to both Australian and International bulls, with the balance being joined to home bred yearlings and purchased stud sires

Darren and Narelle like to adhere to a consistent type as much as possible, avoiding too many extremes in either physical or estimated traits, with a focus placed on muscling and capacity, with growth and do-ability Fertility, physical and foot structure and docility are prioritised also, taking steps to in-build the cow herd's longevity and embed it in the progeny to come A good balance of phenotype and EBV’s are what Darren and Narelle strive to achieve

The growth of their cow herd to 110 registered breeders prompted Darren and Narelle to host their own on-property annual bull sale Mason Valley now sell 32 registered bulls on average per year

Youngs Siding is 45hrs from Perth and 30 minutes from Albany and 15 minutes from Denmark It is one of the oldest districts of the South Coast, with a farming history that dates back to the 1850s Albany and Denmark are home to many natural wonders including top tourist attractions, the Gap and the Natural Bridge, and William Bay National Park, which is home to the very instagramable, Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks The rugged and magnificent coastline, pristine white sandy beaches and the abundance of native woodland are what attract visitors from around the world

After being involved with commercial cattle as part of a larger mixed farm enterprise which also included sheep and cropping, the Quanden Springs Angus Stud was founded in 2012 by Noel and Robyn Stoney at Redmond, Western Australia In 2019 John and Kimberley Stoney with their two boys, Flynn and Isaac moved onto the Quanden Springs farm

Quanden Springs Stud has grown from females purchased at various Western Australian Angus stud dispersal sales This has given us a variety of genetics for Quanden Springs base females Recently we have been purchasing both females and bulls from the Esslemont Angus Stud located in Busselton, WA

Our aim is to produce quiet, quality bulls with a focus on both structure and EBVs. It is important to us to have fertile, easy birthing cows producing calves with good growth

The soil at Redmond is generally a sand over gravel over clay which supports jarrah, red gum and sheoak woodland vegetation in the natural state Our high country has a close layer of conglomerate rock while the low country has paper bark and tea tree vegetation The soils need trace elements and lime added

The pasture is kikuyu, clovers and rye grass Some oats and rye grass is cut for hay Pasture is cut for hay and silage The cattle are predominantly grass fed Two year old bulls are sold at an on property sale in February each year

The Tullibardine journey began in 1966 by Alastair’s parents, Sandy and Margaret Murray and has continued to be a family run seedstock and commercial enterprise ever since

In the early 80’s, the farm was handed over to Alastair, who continued their traditions of breeding Murray Grey cattle

In 2004 Alastair established the Tullibardine Angus Stud. The majority of the Murray Grey Stud was sold to the Wise family, Southend Murray Grey Stud, Katanning in 2021

As EBV’s and genetic testing were becoming more and more popular, the client demand in the area shifted, and that was to breed more performance Angus bulls

Beef producers realised the benefit of injecting Angus genetics into their herd Alastair responded and has continued to expand the Angus herd and now run 150 registered breeders

The Murray family also run 500 commercial Angus and Murray Grey breeders. The calves are predominantly fed on farm for the supermarket trade Australian supermarket giant, Woolworths, have been following the Murray family on their journey for 25 years now

Tullibardine is 2400 acres of sand / ironstone gravel country and receives on average 650mm rainfall per year.

The emphasis at Tullibardine Angus has always been in the strength of the female herd Tullibardine females have been carefully selected for longevity, structural correctness, good depth of body, and milking ability Fertility is of utmost importance in the herd due to the positive flowon effect across the entire operation

When selecting bulls for their AI and natural program, Alastair looks for early maturing, high growth, good carcass traits and length of body

The Tullibardine herd is infused with some of the best Australian and USA genetics on offer including bloodlines from studs such as Millah Murrah, Prime, Banquet, Paringa, and Hoffman

The Murray family, along with Tullibardine farm mangers, Morgan Gilmore and Eliza Bradfield, host an on-property bull sale and sell 50 bulls annually, as well as parading cattle in shows locally and in Perth

Tullibardine Angus is located 23kms to the north of Albany (20mins) and 4hrs 20mins or 400km from Perth

In 2015 the family had the opportunity to purchase the highly regarded Koojan Hills Angus stud from Lew Smit and moved the herd from Kojonup to Manypeaks

Lew founded Koojan Hills alongside his parents Peter and Anne in 1963 Lew prioritised breeding structurally sound cattle of the required type and temperament He was an early adopter of Breedplan technology in 1986 and began introducing North American blood into the herd in the early 1990’s

Since relocating to Manypeaks the Koojan Hills herd has continued to grow, supplying bulls into the local market as well as steering the genetic improvement of the Metcalfe family own growing commercial herd. In 2024 the Metcalfe’s mated approximately 3,000 cows including 550 stud Angus cows and 150 stud Murray Grey cows due to calve in the Autumn

The Metcalfe family commercial herd primarily supplies the domestic supermarkets during the spring and into summer producing grass-fed, hormone free yearling steers and heifers. They target a 300kg cwt with 3-18mm of fat at 18 months of age

This market drives the Metcalfe family breeding philosophy and they continue to strive to breed quiet, structurally sound cattle with adequate growth and carcase merit for the supermarket grids, without sacrificing any maternal traits in their future breeding females They pride themselves on cattle with adequate length and neck extension, strong top lines, udder quality and their sandy loam soil types mean a huge emphasis is placed on foot quality

To further add to the genetics we can offer our customers in Western Australia and further afield, we purchased Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15 in September 2019 We partnered with ABS Australia to commercialise the semen rights of Paratrooper both domestically and globally Paratrooper is demonstrating his value daily, becoming the biggest selling first-year bull ABS Australia has ever had in termsofrevenue

Stud Principal, Siobhan Cowan, is excited about continuing to advance this stud breeding herd in the years to come with rigorous data collection and a tough selection process on cows and heifers in the herd, as well as a meticulous process of selection for new dam and sire lines Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15 will play a key role in the first step of this plan We aim to deliver superior genetics and profitability to our customers from a seed stock breeding herd, combining structurally sound and functional cows thatlast

Our goal is to produce functional females and exceptional bulls We strive for cattle that have exceptional phenotype Our cattle are bred with the commercial and stud breeder in mind –extremely docile animals that will breed generations of enhanced, value-added cattle and maximise profitability By constantly improving the genetics of our nucleus herd, our breeding cowsandbullswillbeleadersofgeneticpotential.

We understand the challenges of commercial beef producers and the need to constantly improve to address the pressures of the globally competitivemarketplaceforbeef

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

has a variety of climate zones enabling reliable year round supply of beef from Mediterranean climates in the south to semi-arid rangelands in the Mid West to sub-tropical savannah in the north.

The Northern Agricultural region is one of the areas that is used to background pastoral cattle in preparation for export during the spring and summer months of the year in Western Australia.

As of 2015, there are a total of 444 pastoral stations in WA with an average area of 196 000ha and a carrying capacity of almost 2600 head of cattle Western Australia has a herd of approximately two million head of beef cattle distributed throughout the state Stocking rates typically between 1–3 CU/hectare

93 of those stations are in the Kimberley and average 230 406ha

57 stations in the Pilbara, 229 831 ha

80 stations in the Gascoyne, 149 405ha

125 station in the Murchison, 176 602ha

89 in the Goldfields, 207 851ha

Cattle in the north of the state have been selected to suit the environmental and climatic conditions Majority of the herds have some degree of Bos indicus genetics

Breeds range from pure Brahman herds to Bos indicus infused breeds such as Droughtmaster and Santa Gertrudis to predominantly Shorthorn and Hereford herds

Distribution of the WA cattle herd by region

A quick look at statisticsKimberley- 678,000

Pilbara- 243,000

Gascoyne, Mid West, Goldfields- 434,000 Wheatbelt- 97,000

South West- 623,000

Great Southern- 207,000

Bos taurus cattle are found predominantly in the Wheatbelt, South West and Great Southern regions The most popular breed being Angus, followed by Hereford and Charolais

A 2020 survey of cattle producers found that 48 percent of all breeding females in Australia are Angus-influenced

Cropping areas are generally across the 'grainbelt’, more commonly known as the 'wheatbelt' Broad acre grain crop growing areas range from the lower Mid-West, through the Wheatbelt, South West, Great Southern, to the lower part of the Goldfields - Esperance region Sheep grazing country is found across those regions, too

The Kimberley region has some of the largest pastoral stations and herd sizes due to its relatively reliable rainfall and sustainable native pastures

In the Kimberley and Pilbara, the most popular cattle breed has been the Brahman cross Recently there has been increasing interest in transitioning to composite breeds or Bos Indicus cross The transition in recent years is due to improving carcase traits and increasing market access options.
