Binary of Contemporary Monumentality City Hall, Ann Arbor, MI, U.S. Individual Project, Institution Studio, University of Michigan Instructor: Julia McMorrough Fall 2018
Modern City Hall, as a building functions in between civic center and official government, involves the character of neutrality (equilibrium) in the balanced relationships in terms of public / private and freedom / power. Generating from the “traditional monumentality” of city hall as an architectural typology, the idea of “contemporary monumentality” could be considered as the city hall representation in the present context. To explore this concept, the “city hall” is reframed in the multiple identities in different layers. The exploration is situated in a binary system, which refers to two characters of modern city hall. One is the rationality: the building organization is under the SYSTEM control, approaching sequence and circulation is guided and clear, the geometry of planning is carefully playing symmetrical or balanced. Another character is the perceptibility: the building needs to reflect the quality of life, the beauty of the city, the diversity of public activities and the richness of sense. Architecture phenomenology exist in every corner and every sunlight in this building, naturally. "S, M, L", is the physical structural clue of this design process. It plays as the boundary, the connection, the separation and the aesthetic representation.

City Hall = Controled Diversity I consider the city hall as a micro-world of the city life which contains different programs from external to internal. The forms of space are discussed basis on different geometric principle, sceptical personality, formal and informal characters. City Hall is treated as a experimental vessel with possibility of various combination results. The space of City Hall is generated by a cohesive and controlled system starting with the concept of grid. There are several different strategies such as scaling, splitting, rotating, penetrating are applied in one platform but different layers to create a hierarchy of various activities. As a result, the identity of this architecture will be expanded to a dialectic condition with contains official discipline and freedom simultaneously.

City Hall = Chasm and Joint
5
The boundary of space between public service and city hall office is clear but not emphatic. Two things are performed in this consideration, one is the material of boundary, another is the central joint space. Transparent glazing wall is designed as the visually blurred boundary between public space and private space, which helps to keep the view connection without behaviour disturbing. Meanwhile, garden atrium is situated in between as a second transmission layer. The Council Chamber plays as a role of central bond, both for its location and essence of its function. Public and staffs could enter this area from two separate entrances. They meet together in one room, but in different levels.

[RENOVATION] AN ARCHITECTURALE PROMENADE
Interrogation of Neoclassical Architecture Renovation Music and Dance School, Edinburgh, U.K. Individual Project, Design Studio, University of Dundee Instructor: Joseph Thurrott Fall 2017
Old Royal High School, a Grade A listed building, is a Neoclassical architecture designed by Thomas Hamilton. This building is located on the foot of Calton Hill facing to the Arthur’s Seat and could be easily accessed by walking down the Princes Street. The Royal High School finished its construction in 1829 and were used as a high school until 1968. After that, the center hall of the building had been used as a debating chamber from 1968 to 1979 and then the whole building became empty until now. Facing to this abandoned building, people provided a lot of possible reuse proposals with new functions such as new Scottish Parliament, photography centre or military museum. But none of these proposals adopted...... The renovation proposal of Old Royal High School in Edinburgh City Center reflect the condition of the World Heritage Area development, the sensitive context of historic building extension and the architecture language in contemporary and the past.

Dialectic as World Heritage
The argument is the doubted conflict between the development and preser vation in a World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, as an important historic building which is located in a powerful site, the preservation strategy not only need to be suitable for the architecture, but only be considerable for public attitude.
Outstanding Location of Royal High School
Narrative of Edinburgh Historical Context
Design as a New Chapter of Old Royal High School
Recently, there are two design proposals have potential to become true. One is a luxury hotel designed by Hoskins Architects (right top) and another one is the new home of St Mary’s Music School designed by Richard Murphy Architects(right bottom). The new extension of hotel design has two big massing on both sides of Royal High School. Compared with the existing historic building and nearby environment, this new extension is too big and can not be accepted by the public. Beyond that, some people believe that this hotel proposal could threaten Edinburgh’s World Heritage status. The strong objection from the public reflects problems when the new contemporary architecture trying to cooperate with the classical historic architecture. Without the considered design response to the existing building and urban context, the renovation proposal is hard to be accepted. Under this condition, one of the essential points is about how to create the dialogue between the Royal high school and the new building, which also refers to the connection between the neo classical architecture and the contemporary architecture.

Is that possible to design the extension contemporary architecture by algorithm automatic calculus?
Algorithm Processing The new algorithm would take the existing context and relationship as the fundamental factor into the result calculation.
The “Promenade” is represented continually in different scales from flowing massing, spatial rhythm to lightly structure system and material transparency.

[REMEMBER] A WUHAN MEMOIR
Memory Evocation Under the Regime of the Block Ning Song Residential District Regeneration,Wuhan, China Individual Project, 4th year Design Studio, Wuhan University Summer 2017
City is the container of collective memory. In China, as the real estate development, numbers of similar apartment is expanding in the city with the damage of urban original tissue and traditional neighbourhood. As a result, the senior citizen lost the source of their memory. And the young generation missed a part of city history. The difference increased the communication gap between the family member. Now, the old apartment needs to be renovated to meet the resident living requirement. Following that, a manifesto about rebuilding the memory is beginning. “A WUHAN MEMOIR” is a debate about urban memory and urban development. It is hard to stop this indifferent economy processing, But what attitude should be build for the human’s memory or the sense of belonging? How can the people recognize where he or she comes from if the city is completely changed and nothing old left? I analysis and abstract the old time neighbourhood and the family r

The texture of the city almost completely be changed. The flooding problem is more severe as the result of high rate of hardening land.
The similar board building take the biggest part of the image of the city.At the same time, the function of this kind of building can not meet the life requirement of the senior citizen.
Aim to supplying more house for citizens, the original low type house gradually be replaced by the board building. And the nature environment is destroyed during the construction. The character of the city is disappearing in this rebuild-period.

How Is The City In Your Memory ?
I want to give back the city memory for the citizen. The traditional neighbour space characters are selected and transferred in to the new design. In this way, the shared space between housing units becomes to the generator of public life. The bridge of memory is built as well as the upgrading of the old building.

The space belongs to all the resident who lives in this apartment. Different type of furniture and installation would be put in different area to define the space function. As the furniture changing, these public area could be used to multi-purpose.

[REACTION] “SENSITIVE ME”
Designing Emotive Environmental Reactions Workshop: Interactive Inflatable Design Group Work Parametric Archihtectural Design Workshop,Tsinghua University Instructor: Zigeng Wang, Ji Shi Summer 2017 This is a model which directly shows the communication and response between the construction, or architecture with context. “Sensitive Me” means the sensibility of human, the sensibility of context and the sensibility of architecture. Human recognize this construction as well as the construction recognizes human. Different emotion occurs at the different stage of process. Human talks with this construction, just like talks with another people.

It functions as the State apparatuses that embedded inside everyone’s ideology. However, it is hidden from our daily life and because of this, the prison-complexindustry raises along with the unfixed issues and rising crime rate. The project aims to create a parallel world, the desire of outside world to prisoners would be established, the visible alert to outsider would be reminded. From top to bottom, the inside programs changes as two “worlds” is gradually approaching to each other.

[REFLECTION] THE FICTITIOUS CITY
As Spectator or Participant in the Chaos City Narrative Story Individual Work, Objects Scales Cities, University of Dundee Instructor: Lorens Holm Fall 2017 Cities, as well as the architecture, are the result of the human aesthetic and financial profit. To purchase the modern beauty and the maximal economy efficiency, cities are designed under the specific order and grid. However, the overly order and overly producing is going to the opposite ending- “Chaos”. The “Chaos”here not means the visually messy for the big image, but the mentally feeling of lost for the people who lives in the city. Two narrative positions will engage in this game. One is the spectator, the authority or the designer of the city. Another is the participant, the citizens who are influenced by the form of the city and also who feel the air of the city everyday.

Coincidentally, the final appearance of the Chaos looks very like other existing cities in the world such as Manhattan, Florence, London, Chicago,Beijing......

This city will include eight pieces of Chaos and one piece of Void in a 3x3 gird square. The whole area of the Chaos are designed following the rules of characterless and standard. Each piece of the Chaos is isolated created and become to the outcome of massive homogeneity duplication. The city is changing in every second because the development never stops. Each area in one grid will change its position with others randomly or it can be seen as the development of Chaos will make this area become to like anther Chaos. In order to not lost in this city, the participant needs to take the intelligent city map equipment when he or she need to go into the Chaos.
However, one day, a participant lost his city map ...... The Endless Chaos
The Duplicated Chaos
The scene he saw on this street corner had no difference compared with anther street corner. He got more and more nervous and suspected he was in a trap that made he walked in circles......
He saw a man whose looking is exactly same with him standing on the opposite street. He was shocked at that moment but still tried to greet to the another “him”. “Hi,” he said. “Hi!” The same feedback returned..... on this
The scene he saw on this street corner had no difference compared with anther street corner. He got more and

The Increased Chaos
The Beautiful Chaos
Finally, he found there was no road in front of him. The buildings are so dense here that already combined as the one. The wall is such huge and towering that no sunlight can across it......
To have a rest, he climbed to the top of the wall and sat down. The sight of this Chaos was so clear in his eyes that he can tell that this Chaos is designed by the regular square shape grids.
The scene he saw on this street corner had no difference compared with anther street corner. He got more and
“What a beautiful place,” he sighed .
