MÉTAMORPHOSES D’ABU DHABI Metamorphosis of Abu Dhabi: the extrapolation of the city shows a variety of contrasts and conflicts between the past and the present, the nomadic and modern life styles, as well as accentuates the nature of Abu Dhabi being the city of constant changes. The design of a theater that is fit for the city is then developed into the scenography of Abu Dhabi in the context of the Architecture Biennale in Venice, Italy. November 2014.

noun

an act of projecting, extending, or expanding (known data or experience) into an area not known or experienced so as to arrive at a usually conjectural knowledge of the unknown area <extrapolates present trends to construct an image of the future> *Definition

Taking Abu Dhabi as the precedent, the project looks into trends of the city and analyze them. The following step is to identify unique characteristics that pertain to the image of an imaginative version of Abu Dhabi.

“Put that facade over there; it looks nice with that building” -- Facades (picture above) “What are we Special nature

morphing (picture

next?” -the right)

The extrapolation of the city should present the originial city’s unique characteristics in a more exaggerated, poetic and graphic manner. Certain aspects of the extrapolation will be examined, including living habitat, historical archive, cultural theater etc.

5

SHADOW DANCE: serves as an open theater in the middle of the desert for citizen of extrapolated Abu Dhabi and any wandering nomads. Essentially, movements from behind the screen/ inside the theater are projected onto the screen as silhouettes, telling story of Abu Dhabi and its people.

MIRAGE -- A VENETIAN STORY: is the scenography narrating the Abu Dhabi experience that takes place at the Architecture Biennale 2014 in Venice, Italy. This architectural installation brings out the essence of Abu Dhabi, including sand, shadow, movement, and illusion, to give visitors at the Biennale the taste of what the city extrapolation is like. This project is a sequence of SHADOW DANCE and a photography project done and exhibited at the Biennale as part of the academic studio.

I N T E R N AT I O N A L S TUDY CENTER AT C I N C I N N AT I The International Study Center at Cincinnati serves as the scholastic and living facilities for worldwide scholars and researchers. The program includes two apartment complexes, research studios, community space and a public park.

9

The site deals with a problematic topography that is a huge drop in height from one side of the site to another, as well as concerns over the substantial demand for space and social issues in the neighborhood. The design takes the approach of creating a central communal space that allows most verbal and visual interactions among the scholars, the public and the residents.

11

The monumental canopy at the more major entrance draws attention as one enters the neighborhood. This exposed structure wraps around the site as a continuous skin from the adjacent residence building. However, it creates a sense of continuity across the complexes, instead of an exclusive kind of feelings.

It is important to create an environment that is welcoming to different groups of people in the community. The existence of a sunken plaza with most public programs (cafe, gallery and public park) draw people in the space. This interactive, social hub also improves the safety of the neighborhood in that part of town.

L A

PAVILION

La Pavillon was a one-week project for tectonic studies in the second year of architecture studies. The goal is to propose a structure and framework that work and support the purpose of the pavilion, a public hangout and an artistic expression of architecture.

15

ENCLOSED | OPENED: the concept that allows the most interaction with the interior and exterior of the structure. As people walk through the pavilion, they will experience different types of spatial environments created by the structure of the space. The objective is to design a pavilion that encourages the relationship between the natural surroundings and the pavilion itself.

Triangular members give the pavilion most flexibility in terms of shapes and forms, and structural stability to support the roof system. Final shapes were decided after various several studies of physical models.

17

THE POOLHOUSE E S C A P E The Poolhouse Escape is ideally a weekend getaway to a cozy, private pool house in the middle of nature. Located far from the road, surrounded by trees and within distance from the creek, the environment is welcoming to those who wish to take a break from the fast paced life. This is not a luxurious, high-end spa, nor this is the infinity pool. The goal of the design is to create a space that is enclosed yet open to the nature outside and above.

19

Simple design that highlights the contrast between the simplicity of buliding masses and the lightweight roofing structure. This design provides the indoor program with an enclosed space that has access to lighting through apertures to the surroundings.

The outdoor program has complete freedom in interacting with the natural conditions of the site.

2014 DISNEY IMAGINATIONS COMPETITION Together with three other students in Architecture, Industrial Design and Computer Engineering, I entered the Disney Imaginations Competition in November, 2014. The theme of last year’s competition is a Disney inspired transportation system in any major city in the world. Our design submission, Sen, made it to one of the 18 semifinalists of the competition. My contribution included concept design, story boarding, typography and graphic illustration.

23

Sen (Vietnamese for “Lotus”) is an elevated rail system integrated with Hanoi, Vietnam. Unlike current monorails, Sen uniquely rewards passengers for lowering their environmental impact. Additionally, each rail car or “Sen Pod” encourages passengers to interact with the city Sen draws its inspiration from. Our design of Sen aims to create a unique user experience to both tourists and natives, enhancing the culturally rich lifestyles that are present in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Celebrate the harvest: The pods integrate into Vietnam’s already existing Harvest festival. Gathering at the Central Dai Sen (The Great Lotus), families light lanterns to celebrate the yearly harvest of human energy through the pods.

P O R T L A N D S TAT E U N I VER SIT Y ( PSU) Behnisch Architekten, Boston, MA Project Architect: Michael Kocher Sector: Higher Education PSU is an on-going project in which Behnisch Architekten is in charge of designing the school of Business that also serves as a social hub for the community on campus at the Portland State University, Portland, Oregon. I was involved with conceptual design, programming, building massing, modeling, and facade studies.

29

It was necessary for the extensive program to fit in the available square footage of the existing building. Various trials of massing were involved in the process. As for the facades, the approach is to have simplistic , green facades that do not take away too much from the form of the building.

L A N G S D A L E UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Behnisch Architekten, Boston, MA Project Architects: Martin Werminghausen and Shir Gale Sector: Higher Education Langsdale Library at the University of Baltimore is a renovation project, in which the entire facade and interior state of the buildings are to be redesigned. My contribution includes facade studies, model making and structural construction documents.

33

The renovation looks into creating a smart facade that can accomodate users of the library. The openings on the facades serve as windows and furniture for the interior. The sculptural glass front signifies the presence of the library in the neighborhood.

CHICAGO GOOGLE OFFICE COMPETITION VOA Associates, Inc., Chicago, IL Interior Architecture Design Group Sector: Workplace Interiors VOA entered a design competition to design Google’s new Chicago office. The design should show the fun and technology-focused aspects of Google, as well as the vernacular Chicago / Midwestern characteristics of the city. My contribution to the proposal includes: design idea charrette, physical model making, Photoshop rendering.

37

The main idea of the design proposal is to create a collaborative space that connects different parts and departments of the office, horizontally and vertically. The approach to this design is to explore possibilities in innovative, sustainable and fun ideas, especially with Google, the world leading giant in technology and creativity. In the end, VOA won the competition.

The overall layout reflects the city of Chicago, with the red ball, or the main collaborative space, being the heart of the city, and other parts of the layout being different neighborhoods. This layout also allows flexibility in terms of employee expansion and restructure of the office.
