GREETING FROM THE GOVERNING MAYOR OF BERLIN

From Venice to Paris, from Rome to London – discover Europe the smart way via Berlin. At viaberlin.com, you’ll find attractive flight connections throughout Europe. It’s swift, simple and saves money. Whether

erlin... ...has changed fundamentally over the last years. Once a divided city with an uncertain future, it has become a lively metropolis that draws a myriad of people from all over the world. Young creators, especially, have come to us and turned Berlin into a stronghold of music, fashion and design. Creativity, today, is one of the special trademarks of Berlin. This is particularly evident in the fashion industry: numerous fashion institutes; countless smaller fashion labels that are marketed the world over; design shops and flagship stores of leading brands; innumerable designers and creators based here with their studios as well as the many successful trade events are transforming Berlin more and more into an important

fashion metropolis. Among these top events is, of course, BERLIN FASHION WEEK, which is taking place now for the third time. BERLIN FASHION WEEK – that means: an array of important fashion trade fairs and events assembled together under one roof, exciting fashion happenings throughout the entire city, important fashion labels presenting themselves here. In short: During BERLIN FASHION WEEK, Berlin is offering fashion enthusiasts and the international trade market simply everything that makes the pulse quicken. In this spirit, I would like to welcome all participants and to also wish the third BERLIN FASHION WEEK great success!

Now that is something you really have to wrap your brain around. There is no other city in Germany and few in Europe, where people could care less about the way they look. Style and elegance? Not exactly based here. And money? Don’t even mention it. Nevertheless, when we take a look at the other Fashion Week cities of the world, those seem to be the main ingredients for the stock of a tasty fashion soup, right? In any event, the network that has joined together under the label BERLIN FASHION WEEK is impressive beyond this city. It shows that the fascination that Berlin holds for visitors, business and creative people alike is ongoing. Many future development projects in Berlin run under big question marks. But this is exactly what seems to have a very special appeal to entrepreneurs and designers, when they interpret the condition of the city as a chance rather than an uncertainty. It seems that more is possible in Berlin: there are fewer boundaries and well-trodden paths that one must follow in order to be successful. There are still open spaces where ideas and trends can - at least within a certain time frame - develop relatively free from economic pressure. To complain that nothing in Berlin functions like in Paris, New York or Milan is simply the wrong attitude. Sensitivity and intelligence are needed here to transform the soft values of fashion such as individuality and distinction into economic success. But, it is possible. In any way it must be assumed that style, elegance and money really aren’t the stock, but just the flavor enhancers of the fashion soup. The stock is made up of creativity, diligence and a big dash of stubbornness. Get up, keep going, don’t give up. And when in doubt, start again from the beginning. Many in the network of BERLIN FASHION WEEK stand for this attitude. Today, the hype about cool, crazy Berlin and its often vacuous, embarrassing ventures in marketing is only perceived as a rustling, annoying subtone. The big concert comes alive when all who have been active in the larger and smaller niches of the fashion industry in this city for so many years band together and set something up collectively. Then, a large exclamation point will have to be added to the many question marks. Heike Blümner | managing director of flora&fauna media

remium Mission accomplished

ANITA BACHELIN & NORBERT TILLMANN | PREMIUM OWNERS

In the beginning, people smiled and branded it as a niche fair, but in almost no time, PREMIUM, founded in 2003 by Anita Bachelin und Norbert Tillmann, has developed into an internationally renowned fashion order platform and the most important German trend fair. It is now taking over the leadership in Berlin. After only four years, PREMIUM today is – with approximately 700 inter national womens’ and mens’, as well as shoe and accessories collections – one of the most respected fashion and lifestyle trade shows in the world and the season opener for the German fashion industry. The mission to establish a segmented, internationally relevant fashion order platform with lifestyle character and edited exhibitors’ portfolios was suc cessfully accomplished. “We want to liberate the exhibitor and buyer from trash and terror, narrow aisles, bad air and worse food, as well as the mountains of stands behind which the collections are hidden. Our aim is to produce a trade show with department store atmosphere. With the open presen tation, the right mix of collections, sections with books, fragrances, CDs and toys as well as art installations and photo exhibitions we are creating the character of a life-style magazine that you can actually walk into with a high density of information and emotion, things that are important for business especially at the beginning

of the season”, as Anita Bachelin explains the concept of PREMIUM. No other event presents the buyer with relevant trend themes so clearly and at the right time – whether L.A. Denims, Skandinavian designers, the theme Cross-Selling or young designers, for which PREMIUM dedicates a special awa r d, t h e P R E M I U M YO U N G DESIGNERS AWARD. The promise to inspire is maintained. Additional trend information is provided by the PREMIUM SYMPOSIUM as well as the new PREMIUM segment RED CARPET LOOKS which is dedicated to the theme star styling and presents the trade with modern evening wear.

Tillmann. He adds, in conclusion, “Finally, all trade show and showroom producers in the city have the chance to organize themselves under the mantle of BERLIN FASHION WEEK and offer the guest a complete overview, perfect service and a good time, thus planning his stay both efficiently and excitingly!”

“No other city has as much to offer as Berlin. Berlin is the geographic center of Europe and capital of its biggest markets, a bubbling creative mecca with perfect infrastructure, a metropolis with the power to fascinate, uniquely rich cultural offerings and outrageously lively club scene – fashion wants and needs Berlin as its base and we offer the necessary stability and planning security that an internationally relevant trade platform requires,” says Norbert

The PREMIUM SYMPOSIUM, which initiated last season, has set as its task the discussion of themes currently relevant to the fashion business in an effort to f ind answers to questions that are burning in us all! Each season, PREMIUM SYMPOSIUM invites luminaries from the international fashion business such as designers, product managers, buyers and representatives of the press to discuss current themes and tendencies, to propose answers to central questions. Though met with incomprehension interna tionally, the question of the location has created waves within Germany, annoying and unsettling both exhibitor and trader. “Why Berlin?“ is the main theme of the PREMIUM SYMPOSIUM Fall/Winter 2007/2008 which will take place on Saturday, 27th January 2007. Moderated by Melissa Drier, correspondent for Women’s Wear Daily in Germany, the

The city is jam-packed with vibrant creativity, it is cracking at the seams, urging for relief. The SPIRIT OF FASHION trade show for authentic brands provides just that. Truly underground, highly creative and upto-date, the show acts as an outlet for that powerful potential.

AVANT-GARDE, HIGH FASHION & PROGRESSIVE STREETWEAR AT CAFÉ MOSKAU

READY FOR BERLIN Starting up with just a few collections, over the years the SPIRIT OF FASHION gradually made its way up in the European trade show circuit, never losing its nerve for the authentic, the core of today’s street fashion. So it just came naturally that the creators of the show, Tim Oberem and Oliver Wals, decided to open up their concept and are now introducing even more streetwear brands. “Even though a lot has changed since the invention of jeans and t-shirts, without the original thrust of creativity coming from youth movements like Punk, Hip Hop and Rock’n’Roll, to name but a few, streetwear would not be what it is today. It’s all about message and identity, about freedom of mind“, says Kai Reder, sales manager of SPIRIT OF FASHION. By extending the exhibition area to 5,000 square meters at the ARENA BERLIN, the SPIRIT OF FASHION is now providing the space to “bring them brands home” as he likes to put it. Classic Rock’n’Roll and Punk styles are being adopted by key designers all over the world. American street culture, British pop attitudes, Punk and Rock‘n’

Roll, Goth and dark fashion, skate and surf wear, music merchandise, Hip Hop and logo fashion, the SPIRIT OF FASHION is home to the authentic manufacturers of these styles. Also per fectly connected to the streetwear and underground universe is the art exhibi tion BUILD TO EXPOSE, presented by the Strychnin Gallery Berlin. More than 60 skateboards made by over 50 of the best artists from Belgium and the Netherlands will be exhibited at the fair. Therefore it proved to be the ideal place for international retailers to find the latest in youth culture styles, not only to fit in underground assortments but also for beefing up regular stores. Its relaxed atmosphere, easy access, friendly service and a spacious restau rant area to hang out in, make the SPIRIT OF FASHION an ideal order and trade fair for suppliers and buyers of extraordinary fashion and accessories in continental Europe. The unique catwalk shows are a famous highlight of the show. Featuring real life individuals, the spirit of street and underground fashion is vividly repre sented in the best way possible.

In line with BERLIN FASHION WEEK, IDEAL will present a cross section of international, contemporary fashion for the third time on the 27th and 28th of January. More than fifty selected designers comprising of mens wear, womenswear and accessories labels will show industry professionals their collections daily at the prestigious Café Moskau between 9h00 and 19h30 in Berlin-Mitte.

The highlight of the event is the fashion show, which takes place as a prelude to the IDEAL itself on Friday evening. Four avant-garde designers will show invited guests their autumn/winter col lections 2007/08. The official BERLIN FASHION WEEK Shuttle Sercive runs between IDEAL, all PREMIUM loca tions and Spirit of Fashion during 26th until 28th January.

IDEAL creates an opportunity to bring together the media, buyers and creatives and allows communication networking and most importantly it is an order platform with a close knit atmosphere. The focus lies on a cooper ation between industry professionals, newly established designers and up and coming talent, as IDEAL’s work with the Festival Hyères has shown. IDEAL differs from other fashion exhibitions because it not only presents avant-garde fashion in a unique way but also has a strong link to art. The exhibition features Jeanne Detallante, a New York based artist and other up and coming international creatives. The exhibition will be open during the showroom hours and is restricted to the visitors of the showroom.

hits berlin! by mikkel hyLdebrandt

Why Berlin? Berlin may experience a certain ‘hype of the hip’ at the moment but nonetheless the city has proven its staying power, because it not only emanates a culture deeply rooted in the city’s turbulent history, it also has an underground flair that in turn is extremely modern and a veritable playground for a free and avant-garde way of thinking. Peter Ingwersen, the founder of the Danish luxury label, NOIR, interprets the Berlin attraction as such: “Historically, Berlin was the place to be in the 20s and 30s. The party stopped abruptly when the war came, but Berlin never quit being the European hearth for free thinking. So going to Berlin today is also a nostalgic and romantic voyage back to the sanctuary of free thinking. That same zeitgeist is still present”. And even though the legacy of free thinking overlaps neatly with the fashion industry Ingwersen does not underestimate the fact that Scandinavia and Germany are neighbouring countries: “Denmark and Germany share borders and that means we understand each other on a cultural level – and many Danes actually know Germany quite well”. Jacob Valdemar Jensen, owner of Agentur V that distributes the funky Danish street wear label WoodWood along with avant-garde designer Henrik Vibskovs eclectic styles, also finds Berlins location unique: “When competing with other fashion cities like London, Copenhagen or Stockholm Berlin is very affordable for those enterprises that operate in Berlin”. To Jacob Valdemar Jensen Berlin is a special place that is both a modern metropolis and a historical vista – and furthermore it is surprisingly close to the Scandinavian countries! One thing is the city’s prime location and the North-European connection. Another is that the current trend across Europe – the simpler and more clean-cut luxurytrashy rock’n’roll look with slim fitting, narrow jeans, sleek tops and leather jackets, retro sneaks or pointy shoes, simple but effective accessories – is actually being set in the Scandinavian countries, mainly in Sweden and Denmark. Coincidentally, the same trend aligns perfectly with the ‘Berlin Trash’ look – second hand clothing and military surplus jackets. Hence, Berlin is at the moment the fashion city best characterized by this trashy, but luxurious look because it in essence simply fits Berlin and its inhabitants so well. On those grounds: What better place is there to develop, perfect and sell this look than Berlin? The answer can easily be found in the streets of Berlin where it is obvious that brands– Scandinavian or Non-Scandinavian - have taken the plunge onto the new market, opening stores in Berlin along ‘like-minded’ including Filippa K, Acne Jeans and lately WoodWood. The Swedish brand Acne Jeans even owes its huge success partly to the Berlin trade fair PREMIUM who discovered and took in the luxury denim label when it was completely unknown only a few years ago. Today the sleek denim styles and contemporary ‘Nordic chic’ look is seen everywhere.

The North-European Potential But one thing is what Berlin has to offer as its current attraction. Another is what the city has to offer the Scandinavian fashion labels beyond the city’s legacy and current hype. First and foremost Berlin has the ultimate potential of becoming one of the leading fashion cities in Europe among Paris, London and Milan. And with Berlin as the fashion epicentre it will not only provide Scandinavian brands with the most important fashion market in Europe, but could also be the gateway to a larger European market, and might even an opening onto the Eastern European market that up until now is un-chartered territory. Berlin is, in fact, a potential gateway to the world! For the Nordic fashion labels the BERLIN FASHION WEEK is a platform from which the Scandinavian labels will gain a more visible position on the International fashion scene. To top it off, no other fashion city has embraced ‘the Nordic style’ like Berlin. PREMIUM has for an example put great effort into promoting ‘The New Northern Wave’ as the tradeshow has named the trend for this years’ tradeshow. Thus, the Berlin hype goes both ways: Scandinavian brands love Berlin and Berlin loves the Nordic fashion. Thus, the potential is just waiting to burst out in full. The Challenge As with any promising potential comes a challenge. The challenge for the city of Berlin is to actually become the one and only fashion capital of Germany. A work in progress, surely, and one of the main concerns could be image: “Berlin should define itself stronger as a fashion city” means Ingwersen. For Berlin that unique definition which separates the fashion capital of Germany from the others is already being created: Berlin is where the newest and latest is spotted on street-level, Berlin loves and adores its underground and lets it play freely and creatively. And that might be another reason as to why Scandinavian brands are seeking Berlin: They themselves have had the struggle of finding a unique style and that special ‘it’ that defines them from numerous others.

Filippa K

No other city has been as welcoming towards Scandinavian clothing brands as Berlin. Here is a look at why this Northern European alliance between the neighbouring countries is working so well! Berlin has it all according to numerous Scandinavian fashion brands that over the past years have entered the German fashion market and opened stores mainly in Berlin. The city may not have them all, but boast a surprisingly large number of Nordic fashion brands in numerous boutiques. In fact no other German city has welcomed Scandinavian fashion like Berlin, where, in return, the functional and fashionable styles are very popular.

PREMIUM Leads the Way PREMIUM was not only the very first to trend-spot the growing interest in the Nordic understated luxury design wave – they are also the largest international order platform for Scandinavian brands not only in Germany but in all of Europe. This year with over 70 handpicked Scandinavian collections PREMIUM has even made “The New Northern Wave” a theme in their multi-faceted fashion trade fair. “Berlin is the platform for Scandinavian brands and PREMIUM has great faith in the ‘New Northern Wave’. More so, in

For the Scandinavian fashion brands the bigger challenge is to be patient once the brand gets its go in Germany. Even though Berlin may experience the hype of currently being one of Europe’s ‘it’-cities that hype will eventually wear of. The Berlin trade fairs have realised this and have therefore put an effort into long-term development for its long list of participating brands; a way of saying that Berlin may not yet be a full-blown fashion city, but it will pay of in the long run to be a part of the BERLIN FASHION WEEK. Because Berlin is just about to blossom into its full potential as a European fashion city, and even though it might take some time, Berlin is definitely worth the wait!

Berlin Scandinavian brands are given the chance to gain a more international acceptance”, says director and woman behind PREMIUM Exhibitions, Anita Bachelin.

PRESENTS HIS FIRST SOLO FASHION SHOW Fashion Show 25th JanUARY 2007 | 20h00 Rotes Rathaus Rathausstrasse 15 10178 Berlin | Mitte showroom Charlottenstrasse 68-71 10117 Berlin | Mitte T +49 (0)30 206 208 810 F +49 (0)30 206 208 899

On Thursday, January 25th 2007, just in time for the start of BERLIN FASHION WEEK, Michael Michalsky will present his first show. The theme for his premium and denim line is “Real Clothes for Real People.” The former Global Creative Director of adidas announced in July 2006 that he was going to start his own fashion business and would be introducing three new labels by the next year. During the 11 years he spent at adidas, Michalsky created a synergized mix of fashion, branding and music, and introduced the concept of collaborations between haute couture designers and sportswear brands. Two of his three new labels, the premium MICHALSKY line and PLANET M – Michalsky Jeans, will be presented in January. These will include women’s and men’s wear from the upscale and denim segments. MICHALSKY combines classic chic with streetwear influences: discreet luxury for the cosmopolitan dresser who values quality and tradition but goes for a contemporary look. PLANET M – Michalsky Jeans is inspired by dance-floor culture. During the first season Michalsky will be conquering the German market before venturing to international territories. When selecting a headquarter, Berlin

20 | BFW MAG

was the only city that came into question. Still, the company’s focus will be on the worldwide market. The German capital is the perfect platform for designers: a creative capital with its sights set on Asia and America as well as Eastern Europe. “This is why we want to present our very first show at BERLIN FASHION WEEK.” – Michalsky explains. The variety of his past projects is proof that Michael Michalsky is a great visionary. He has been responsible for the relaunch of the German luxury label MCM and will continue to be the creative head of this traditional label. In addition, the Berlin resident will start the first Tchibo Fashion line in the summer of 2007, which will develop into a long-term strategic collaboration. Michael Michalsky is one of the most influential contemporary German fashion designers. Without a doubt, he has had one of the most amazing careers in the fashion industry. He won the GQ Germany’s National Designer of the Year in 2003 and was selected Sportstyle Designer of the Year by Ispo Vision a year later. In 2005 he and his adidas team won the Red Dot Design Award as Design Team of the Year.

THE GERMAN CAPITAL REGION MORE VALUE FOR YOUR INVESTMENT

The agency previously realized projects with some of the world’s biggest photographers such as Will McBride, David LaChapelle, Peter Lindbergh, Rankin, Lord Snowdon and Mario Testino. The interaction of different disciplines as well as the cooperation with the local scene and international professionals make NOWADAYS the market leader in Berlin for creative concept developing and production in the field of fashion.

The success of Shotview, founded in Vienna in 2003, has, in the meantime, extended far beyond the German-speaking market. From the very beginning, Kozva Rigaud, director of Shotview, who refers to her portfolio as “conservative rebels”, put her stakes on a selection of photographers with a concep tual, high-quality and artistic orientation. Thus, Shotview represents photographers such as Joachim Baldauf, Luis Sanchis, Peter Rigaud, Ben Hassett and Erwin Wurm, who

create international advertising campaigns for Gucci and Alexander McQueen, among others as well as sophisticated editorials for Vogue, Harpers Bazaar UK and Japan, V Magazine and diverse art projects. In addition, Shotview also runs an online image archive as well as a small, excellent online gallery with a very limited number of selected works of its photographers. In February, Shotview will be opening a branch office in Berlin. www.shotview.com

Max Mara | 55 years of italian fashion

Until February 4th 2007, C/O Berlin, The Cultural Forum for Photography, is presenting the exclusive showing of the exhibition One Man Shown by photo grapher Karl Lagerfeld. Karl Lagerfeld observes a single individual, a young man named Brad Kroenig. Kroenig is alone, but not lonely. He has no secrets from the camera and has an unusual freedom in his dealings with it; being photographed is his calling, his talent. With his very personal, changing, masculine grace he is totally present in these images, but inwardly, he is absent, full of ideas we know nothing about. His manner is that of the distant, unapproachable stance that is allowed only for beautiful people. For Brad Kroenig, the distance between mytho logy and modernity can be covered in a single step. He is aware of more than he knows, and does not need words to present any of this perfectly; his face and his body allow him to incorporate all these changes. With Kroenig, it is the roots of the unconscious that give correct expression to his form. He ‘dies’ as soon as the lamps are turned off. What remains is a totally normal

The exhibition ‘COATS! Max Mara, 55 years of Italian Fashion’ offers a fascinating journey into the history of Italian fashion. Max Mara is one of the oldest and most celebrated ‘Made in Italy’ companies: founded by Achille Maramotti in 1951 and run today by his sons Luigi and Ignazio and daughter Maria Ludovica. The exhibition addresses the history of this company from Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy for the first time, using the coat (the emblematic and most well-known design from Max Mara) as its key motif. Around 70 original styles are presented in an extensive cultural-historic survey from the

1950s to today, with designs by Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Luciano Soprani, Guy Paulin, Anne Marie Beretta and others. Numerous designer sketches never displayed before show the high level of creativity in designs and pattern development. Another major feature is the collection of approx. 100 selected original photo graphs from advertising campaigns, including those by Sarah Moon, Manfredi Bellati, Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel and Craig McDean. Further focus points include production processes for inhouse production and an artistic debate with fashion.

ONE MAN SHOWN | PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES ‘all-American boy’, one from whom we would never expect such a range of transformations. Both in photography and in fashion, Karl Lagerfeld’s style cannot be pinned down. The worldfamous fashion designer first took up photography in the 1980s. Ever since, he has been a successful photographer and collector. He gives his creativity and his wide-ranging talent free rein, and photographs in a free style, aes thetically secure, clear, and direct, with no interest in others’ opinions. ‘I don’t know whether I have a particular way of seeing things or whether this is evident in my photographs. How should I know? I’ve never seen through other people’s eyes. That’s of no interest to me.’ In 1996, Lagerfeld, originally from Hamburg, was awarded the Culture Prize of the German Photography Society. Karl Lagerfeld and Gerhard Steidl designed the exhibition ‘One Man Shown’, with photographs and multimedia installations, as a world wide exclusive for C/O Berlin. A cata logue accompanying the exhibition will be published by Steidl-Verlag.

The exhibition “STYLE 100” presents highlights from 100 issues of Style & The family Tunes with an emphasis on the anniversary issue. For this special publication, selected photographers were commissioned to focus their very special gaze toward the future of fashion and style photography, that indisputable manifestation of Zeitgeist. Included are: RALPH MECKE, who presently lives in Paris and together with Klaus Stockhausen produced the very first fashion spread for STYLE with today’s top star Christina Kruse

as model. MELODIE MCDANIEL, American photographer for VOGUE Hommes and video director who, 8 years ago, published a sensational black/white spread on the theme “Black Church in America” and is known for her sensitive approach to the topic. MARCUS GAAB, regular contributor to STYLE, who with his Endless Spread 2004, photographed STYLE’s longest photo spread yet. The final list of photographers is guaranteed to hold a few more surprises… www.stylemag.net
