For me Erasmus is almost over. In two weeks I will be back in my country and it literally freaks me out. No more tapas, no more Retiro, no more sun in january. However it all might sound super simple true about Madrid is you gonna miss it when you will have to leave it. In Poland we have a proverb which says Życie jak w Madrycie, literally Life like in Madrid and we always say it when we wanna say that our life is pleasantly delightful, generally full of pleasure and joy and walking throught the city in the past days is like a given proof that this is not only the rhyme that this proverb comes from! I’m gonna miss the ambience of Spanish capital, people siting in bars and cafeterias all the time and neighbourg’s panties hanging outside on whole patio quite a lot. However finding yourself in a new place is not easy. I never thought Spanish is gonna hit me in my had so hard it gonna hurt whole first month and at some point there just came a thought that having a little guide in some of those harder moments would be pleasant, delightful, generally full of pleasure. That’s why you’re holding this paper. With Catia we decided to create a guide for the First-Moments-in-Madrid hoping that maybe a little hint of where to go, what to see and what to do would be something useful. Apart from guide to Madrid you can find inside also some tips where you can escape from the city noise if you will get tired of it.

Being new to the city isn’t a piece of cake. Finding your fav spots, places for morning caffe con leche or dancing for whole night might take a while in a place like Madrid, so if you want to have a little advice, before you’ll dive into the city on your own, take a look at our guide! Park, located around 10 min from ESD, will surprise you with its charm. Perfect place for a longer breake, if you need to escape for a moment from everyday rush. Known as ‚Seven Tits’ because of its hills, gives you the perfect view for the entire city and mountains outside Madrid, it is one of the best places in town to see the sunset.

Space dedicated for lots of different activities in field of art and contemporary culture (former buildings of slaughterhouse now are used as exhibition halls and theatre). Most important buildings are Cinematheque, where they usually screen non fiction film, mostly documentaries from around the world, also Design Centre where exhibitions and markets are taking place, but also Naves Matadero and Intermediae devoted for visual art and art performance, Naves holds Accion!Mad festival, international performance festival, they are also important centre for art residencies. Apart from those mentioned still there are few more. On daily basis they have their own schedules, but whole space sometimes is transformed into one event taking place on

Biggest city center park in Madrid, lungs of the city, perfect location for any kind of picnic, jogging, yoga, outdoor dancing classes, roller skating or simply chilling out. Most busy during sunny Sundays, full of madrilenos as well as tons of tourists. This is Madrid’s oldest and most iconic street market. Every Sunday at 9am, hundreds of stalls are set up in C/Ribera de Curtidores, in the Embajadores neighbourhood, filling the street with life and bustle. It’s a must for tourists and locals alike, who browse through the new and second-hand clothes, costume jewellery, decorative items, vinyl records, T-shirts of bands, souvenirs of Madrid, prints and drawings. At noon it’s almost impossible to walk down the street, and two streams of shoppers are created, one heading for Plaza del Cascorro and another heading down to the Ronda de Toledo. Beautiful space for drinks, eating, but also enjoying movie screenings as well as live performances and theater pieces. Cinema hall is all in red with small stylish tables so you don’t have to hold everything in your hands during the film or smash it with your shoe after placing the cup with drink just under your seat. They hold film cycles as well as regular ones. The interior of the entrance hall below with space for chatting, drinking and eating is stunning with high ceiling and plants writhing on the walls, you can also enjoy movie screenings there in slightly different way, than in the regular Cinema hall above. Located in Lavapies, this self-managed social centre is one of the epicentres of social culture, urban art and citizen participation in Madrid. It got its name from its location inside in the old Fábrica de Tabacos (Tobacco Factory), which was vacated in 2000. The building was abandoned for more than a decade until the Lavapiés Cultural Association CSA La Tabacalera took over its management. Since then, it’s been a place to go for talks, debates, urban art, presentations, theatre, film screenings, markets as well as more extravagant activities like free style wrestling competition.always trying to generate and disseminate a form of free culture.

The historic Palacio de Cibeles, formerly the Palacio de Telecomunicaciones and now home to the Ayuntamiento de Madrid (City Hall), also houses this multicultural space. From film screenings to various types of art exhibitions, usually involving contemporary art, hosting well known, old folks of art, as Marina Abramovic, as well as youg artists initiatives, like latest exhibition named Saliva, offering various range of workshps connected with the exposition space. Also a big terrace at the top of the building is a huge atraction as it letssyou see the Plaza the Cibeles from bird-eye view as well as the landscape of the center

Museo del Prado

Prado is the most important museum in Spain. For the huge concentration of masterpieces, among them earlier paintings and sculptures such as stunning Spanish Romanesque murals and Gothic altarpieces; classical and Renaissance sculptures; works from the Italian Renaissance; 15th-century Flemish paintings, with the world’s greatest collection of works by Hieronymus Bosch; plus El Greco, and German paintings such as Dürer’s extraordinary 1498 ‚Self-Portrait’. One of the Prado’s greatest attractions are the Velázquez Rooms featuring the artist’s massive state portraits of Felipe IV and his court, with pride of place taken by ‚Las Meninas’, often described as the greatest painting in the world because of its complex interplay of perspectives and realities. The rooms devoted to Goya are the most numerous dedicated to any one artist in the museum.

Casa incendiada it offers exhibitions principally by emerging artists working in all genres, but also features cutting-edge performance art and music (including short seasons of video artists) and activities for kids. The centre also includes a fair-trade shop, a cafe, a library and classrooms for courses, especially in IT, languages and audiovisual and plastic arts. In september they hold festival devoted to young artists called PUWERTY, in october they are hosting She makes noise, which you can read more about on following pages. They are also taking care of Puchi Award, which is a contest for best book projects.

Museo de Reina Sofia

This is a must for art fans and an essential part of Madrid’s Art Triangle, together with the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. Located just near by Atocha, the Reina Sofía boasts an impressive façade with glass and steel lift-shafts, designed by British architect Ian Ritchie. Nowadays, the museum is just as impressive from the back, with three buildings, principally built of glass and steel, arranged around a courtyard. Inside the museum apart from art pieces you can also enjoy calm patio with huge, Alexander Calder’s sculpture in the middle. Greatest jewel of collection is definately ‘Guernica’ by Picasso, reaction to tragedy that happened in 1937 to the Basque town of Guernica bombed by Germans that flew in support of the Francoist forces in the Spanish Civil War.

Conde Duque

Conde Duque is a restored cultural centre nowadays one of Madrid’s most important. It hosts shows, exhibitions, talks, book days and a varied programme of workshops. It also has outdoor concerts and plays in summer, which are part of the Veranos de la Villa programme and feature top artists and shows every season. Institutions like the Archivo de la Villa, the Hemeroteca Municipal, the Biblioteca Histórica Municipal, the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo, the Biblioteca Musical Víctor Espinós and the Biblioteca Digital Memoria de Madrid also have their headquarters here.

The name literally means specific style in spanish architecture, dating back to 19th century, merging many elements, from ancient ones to abstract brick ornaments. The museum, holding exact the same name is also an amazing mixture of past and the future. Located around Atocha station, in antigue railways’ workshops, making it hard to separate what is prepared for your eye to see as an exhibition and what is just a trace of industrial history of the place. Walking around space, among old machinery and pieces of art merged into is an amazing experience! Pichi Fest

This festival is taking place in October, in cultural centre in Lavapies, La Casa Encendida. For few days they are opening their doors, as the name says, for women artist that create electronic and experimental music and audiovisuals. Year by year, the event is growing and in 2018, for itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth edition apart from music concerts, you could experience Cinema screenings, workshop and audiovisual performances. Diversity of artists is making this festival worth a visit either if you are interested in socially involved music, either simply dancing.

One day festival, not small thought, taking place in huge art space, former slaughterhouse, Matadero Madrid. This year they held the first edition of the event, the headliner was Arca, electronic music artist and dj, known for his collaborative work with Bjork, Kanye West or FKA Twigs. He, himself made the audience boiling with energy, also strucked by strong visuals, making the experience of this evening remarkable. What is also worth saying: Whole event was FREE.

Literally paradise for zine lovers. Taking place once in the year, at the beggining of November, by far seated in barrio Carabanchel, self menaged center EKO. For two days Pichi trasforms the space for its own needs, stalls are full of publications about everything, from compilation of drawings and photos of Putin hugging dogs to ones bringing up social issues, talking about feminism and daily life traps socjety developed. If you want to meet local creators of graphic scene of the city this is the best place, you can even meet there proffesors of IED Madrid: European Institute of Design selling their publications, also all

the young artists emerging there. Apart from this they have also charlas, what means talks with some of the zine creators, this year for exaple Raquel Manchado de Antorcha Ediciones was talking about misoginia in graphic humour, stereotype look of women which can be widely found in illustration, making these stereotypes even stronger. She was also selling zine with all collected illustrations. Charlas are also a field for discussion about topics they bring there up. Furthermore Pichi crew usually prepare also other activities, like silkscreen printing (serigraphy) allowing you to make some cool prints on your clothing. Whole ambience of the event is very nice and tollerant and for any kind of people, you can come and chat, have a drink offered in a bar or even dance to music played by local djs as at the end zine fair turns into a party.

If that all sound great to you and you would like to get involved even more than only strolling among the stalls and going through zines you can either apply with your own production, around month before the event they hold an open call for zines, so you can simply submit your own selfpublished stuff or if this doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound like you but you like helping in organising events, each year they look for voluntaries to help in preparing the space before, during and after the event. This can be also a great opportunity for you to practice Spanish!

Mexico has this machismo-culture deeply normalize in most of the families, schools and media. There’s this term we use: “micro-machismos”, all those apparently harmless jokes, comments, attitudes and ways that are used by both men and women on a particular scale, but that contributes to the “rape culture” and gender un-equality on a general scale. There’s a lot of sexists phrases used on a daily basis, that repeat gender stereotypes like “girls are weak”, “girls should stay at home”, “boys don’t cry”, “boys must be strong”, and also a lot of moral norms that on one hand represses women sexuality and on the other uses a woman decisions about their body and lifestyle to blame her when she’s harassed, abused, rapped or killed. “What was she wearing?” “Why was she out at night?” “She could stopped it if she wanted to” “It’s her fault for getting drunk like that”. Almost every news about a feminicide or a rapped case comes with unasked context about the victim’s sexual activity, clothing and other irrelevant facts about her lifestyle. There’s a lot of women in Mexico fighting for our right to decide about our own body, for the right to have an education on a save environment, and to get justice for all the rapped, forcemissed and murdered women. These collectives work side by side, accompanying women and fam-

In my country, the women (and even children) are protected by the law to a large extent. There’s even an organisation that makes sure that women are not disadvantaged. That aside, the guys in my country are also complaining about how the girls do not have to serve in the compulsory military, however there are girls that volunteered to be part of the army. A child will only take the father’s name as the family name. Being a country with Chinese as the majority, sons were preferred in the past because of this reason, in order to continue the family name. On the other hand , marrying off a daughter is similar to giving her off to another family.

In Italy until 1981 we had the law on “The crime of honor”, thus allowing a penalty discount to the male murderer who killed a female family member, who was holding back an illegitimate carnal relationship. Only in the 1996 was abrogate the extenuating crime of rape for those who married the rape victim. These are just some of the most striking examples of the injustices and discrimination that women have always experienced on their own skin. 17 Guide to Somewhere Else Despite all multiple posibilities, glory of the big city and all the random faces you will probably never know, Madrid can slightly become too much of too much at some point…What to do about that? Here go the answers! S e g o v i a By bus: 1,5 hour/around 4 euros Entering the city you can already know what you came here for: a view for the main attraction of a town is lcrossing your eyes: you see large ancient aquduct going through the neighbourhood. Apart from that Segovia is a truly charming town, you can easily let yourself loose your way wandering narrow streets going up the hill. It is also worth to go down the hill for the other part, further from the newer part of the city, so you could find there a meadow, giving you the perfect view for Segovia’s castle just from it’s bottom.

T o l e d o By bus: 1 hour/around 4 euros (if you have your public transport card and valid monthly ticket on it, bus to Toledo is included) The city is also know as a „City of Three Cultures” refering to cultural influences of Christians, Muslims and Jews. Don’t be surpried if you’ll see lots of shops presenting various types of knives or blades as Toledo has a long story of bladed weapons production. It’s history is complexed, as it was ruled by Visigoths and Arabs as well. It i salso seated on the hill so you can admire views of surrounding climing the balcony of the city. It was also a place where famous painter, El Greco was working and died, so you can visit his museum, created to look alike his house. Toledo was declared as a World Heritage Site UNESCO

C u e n c a By bus: 2 hours/around 14 euros Town known mostly for it’s stunning location. All buildings occupy a hill, some of them hanging just over the abyss, build on the stone wall. You can start a walk through a large bridge from which you can see whole town floating on rocks, than climb it up and up till you reach the remainings of the old walls from which you can see a landscape also of city surroundings. Cuenca was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Don’tbe surprised when you’ll get off the bus, it arrives in the newer part of the city, so you have to take a 15 min walk to actuallly get to the old part with hanging houses.

Alcala de Henares By cercanias: around 40min/included in public transport card One of he oldest towns in Spain, also it is declared as a World Heritage Site UNESCO. Whole city is about the University and all most must see buildings taking your breathe away are the ones of University. Apart from it’s educational aspect it i salso well know to be a hometown of Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, whose house you can visit there. The biggest plaza of the town is also taking name after him.

Manzanares al Real By bus: around 45min/included in public transport card Small town with a castle, maybe not having so much to ofer by itself, inspite of the fact that it is just an opening to Parque Nacional de la Sierra Guadarrama with amazing landscapes of mountains full of rocks. If you’ll menage to go there during the week be sure to find yourself in totally opposite situation to what you experience in Madrid. This time you can be in complete silence, without any sound of traffic, what is more, possibly on your own, only with few human figures somewhere high above your head hidden between the rocks climbing up with ropes. Views are definately worth visiting as it is not an extremely long trip. If you don’t have so much time you can take a red path, by the river, from the city towards the entrance o the park, which takes around 2 hours to go back and forth (depending on how much time you will spend stopping for admiring the views), for wandering through the park itself it will probably take longer, but don’t worry, this route only to the entrance also provides images you will keep in your head while already being back to Madrid.

Strolling throught the streets of Lisbon you can make some observations about Madrid actually…so here we go: if you think Madrid is hilly- NO, it is not. If you ever thought Madrid is a bit dirtyNO, it is definately not. If you are so delighted by the ornaments you can find in Madrid.- NO, go to Lisbon and find your eyes stunned by amazing ceramics patterns almost on every building that you’re gonna pass.

Lisbon seems like a different state of mind, if you come from more eastern part of Europe I can assume you can find the spirit of your homeland there. With a little mess going all around, everybody seems pretty laid back, cramped in 4 lines of metro, while on each station they play music from the speakers, just to make sure you will have some nice moments standing there and waiting. Tram lines hanging above your head in the air are also iconic for the city. Be sure not to miss the 28 tram ride. Always crowded, but worth a ride thought the narrow streets in a wooden cab for all the views you can catch on your way, including a close glance at chestnuts stall of a man somewhere just near by a tram track, allowing you to literally almost catch one with your own teeth. I would say Lisbon is a perfect place for wandering limitlessly through the streets, cause it is, but always you have to keep in mind that it is gonna make you authorized to skip next week gym practice without any doubt. Walking all those streets is like a pretty good workout. Worth to mantion i also the fact that Portugese are truly talkative people, so don’t worry, if you don’t get enought of small talks with waiters, bartenders or random people on the street in Madrid, you will get it in Lisbon. What is more- they are wonderful English speakers!

You can enjoy reading e.g. KAJET JOURNAL having a great coffe on a side, on your way towards LX Factory or even further Torre de Belem.

Casa Independente (Largo Intendente 45) Don’t be surprised if you’ll simply pass it during a day not even noticing there is anything happening in this location. They have some artists residencies there and other art creating events going on from time to time. Mostly they open their doors for the evening gigs and the interior is stunning, two floors, a bit alike Budapest’s ruin pubs, that gives you the feeling you entered some kind of house party with tones of people attending. Great music, drink bar and people.

Desterro Multifunctional space offering place for artists works as well as for creation proces as just exposure, also various workshops.They also have some music events, entering during the night, you enter a room with a bar and murmur of people in dim lights, pass the room with green light with people playing cards, go down the stairs and open a door which hides an electronic dancefloor inside.

Perfect place if you look for the escape from cities. In 40 minutes you can get there by city train, from Lisbon, it stops on various stations, including Sete Rios and Rossio, more in the center. Don’t be scared by a large amount of people heading in hte same direction as you- Sintra is very popular due to it’s valuethey have a Moorish Castle there as well as amazingly located at the top of the hill Palace de Pena, soi f you will choose a weekend for checking it out for sure you will be accompanied by lots of others wanting to check it ouot as well BUT thing is most of the people usually take a bus that simply drives them from place to place, as all monuments are located

20 at the tops of the hills. But you can dare to take a walking route up. Probably everybody will tell you it takes a lot of time- if 2-3 hours for a whole tour back and forth is a lot, than yes, if not, you can try. Just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get folled by all tuk tuk (small vehicles) drivers who will tell you as high number as possible just to make you step in and let them drive you up. Views on walking tour are amazing, from train station you can go towards the historic center of the city, than up towards the moorish castle and than on the crossroad try to pick not a car road, but the small stone pavement path leading up just near by the fountain/water source by the wall.

Located 1,5 hour from Lisbon small, town by the sea, which you can reach by bus from siete rios for around 10 euros, holds the record for the biggest waves, paradise for surfers, but also amazing place to see. It consists of an old town part at the Cliff and newer at the bottom. Of both sides of the Cliff you can enjoy sandy beach with a stunning view up. From the newer town side you can take a ride up by railway tram or simply walk up the stairs which takes around 10 min. Standing on the Cliff is Trilling and if you dare to reach for more you can walk around the surf museum which is right at the end of the Cliff and go down the rocks of the Cliff wall, below the building, so there will be almost nothing separating you from huge waves hitting the rocks around you.
