ASHka – ash ceramics
Mateusz Mioduszewski year: 2018 degree: B.A. project Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice contact & portfolio: mat.mioduszewski@gmail.com behance.net/mioduszewski
ASHka is an experiment in ceramics employing fly ash waste and various ceramic masses into industrial design. Undertaken as a master degree project on Faculty of Design Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, it focuses on a problem of post-manufacturing waste utilization. The initial material was fly ash gathered from fluidised bed boilers in a local power plant – Jaworzno III. Research on it has led to creating a large material base later used to compose destined material. The study examined a number of blends of fly ash and various loams. Adding variable sintering parameters was the next step. Cooperation with Faculty of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy of Silesian University of Technology allowed for successive research on technical parameters and distinction of material for further refinement. Products are based on a blend containing 70% of fly ashes combined with various loams. The material is molded manually by mixing light and dark coloured loams providing each object with a unique pattern. After firing it adopts a light beige colour, though every slight change in chemical composition of ashes affects the tint. Examining the final blend revealed high moisture absorption property. It is a desired feature as pots’ wetness helps to keep a plant hydrated for longer. The tiles come in two variants – enameled and not. Enameled tiles allows for usage in high humidity spaces.

Facing consumerism – a model of transparent wool accessory brand Runo Sonia Kalandyk, Anna Pielesz (Problonde) year: 2019 degree: M.A. project Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków contact & portfolio: studio@problonde.com behance.net/problonde instagram.com/ problonde_studio/
The project was created as a result of the analysis of the growing phenomenon of consumption in the clothing and footwear industry. Our main assumptions for the project are building awareness of the consumer and creating a good example of the brand developed on the principles of sustainability, transparency, and ethical fashion. The most important values that guide us are honesty, simplicity, respect for objects and material. Our goal for the project was to raise the problem of Polish wool, as a material currently undervalued and wasted in Poland. We wanted to present wool in a new, fresh setting that will allow appreciating its value and nobility. This is especially important now, at a time when people prefer to walk in “plastic” clothing, without being aware of the negative impact on the environment. Runo is the brand of bags, shoes and hats. All products are fully biodegradable and they have been manufactured using the felt forming technologies developed by the Polish hat producer Polkap. Problonde is a design studio created by Sonia Kalandyk and Anna Pielesz. For about 5 years they have been an inseparable design duo. They like naturalness and sincerity. Their motto is sustainable design. They try to ensure that each of their projects is well thought-out in environmental and social aspects. They love craftsmanship in which they discover the value they can bring to the modern, fast world. Creating, both in the field of graphic design and product design, gives them great joy and satisfaction. That is why their portfolio is a collection of works from both areas.

From Nowhere with Love – plantable seed paper cards
Olga Zelenska year: 2018 degree: B.A. project School of Form Poznań contact:
olyzel@gmail.com behance.net/olyzel
The material part of the project is a series of postcards made from handmade paper with plants seeds inside. Using traditional methods of papermaking, natural materials and dyes and seeds of local plants, author created biodegradable postcards, which one can take on a journey from home or bring from a trip as a souvenir. Once settled in new place, one can put a postcard into the soil to give life to plants from one’s homeland. The project takes its outcomes from author’s observations and research on the emotional and mental connection of plants and human beings. In the era of constant movement and instability, the positive influence of nature on the psycho-emotional state of a person plays an important role. Every year more and more people become nomads, changing their places of life and work. In their turn, plants always used animals and human beings to spread their seeds, so to say, to travel. And what is an immigrant if not a weed making its way through hard surface of a new city? The author believes that plants still influence greatly on urban population but the communication within people and plants could be deepened. So the project includes a research on Polish edible plants and weeds growing in cities and beyond.

Sensual Objects
Justyna Fałdzińska, Miłosz Dąbrowski (UAU) contact, shop & portfolio: info@uaushop.eu uauproject.com
Sensual Objects are products created through explorations of desktop 3D printing in sustainable manufacturing. The shapes and textures are designed to be touched, they are created as a sensual remedy to overwhelming flat surfaces of modern lives. Objects are designed and manufactured in our studio in Warsaw. They are produced with the best quality materials either bio-based or sourced from recycling. UAU PROJECT is a design studio based in Warsaw, Poland. Founded by Justyna Fałdzińska and Miłosz Dąbrowski, graduates from Industrial Design Faculty on Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. They are exploring and experimenting with consumer oriented 3D printing for use in home production. Our goal is to show that 3D printing is the best way to make good design sustainable and accessible. We develop our products with passion and commitment, with only the best quality materials. The environment is of utmost importance to us, so all of the materials we use are either biodegradable or highly recyclable.

Tumicoffee – design of selected home decor elements using coffee waste Marek Kuźmiński year: 2019 degree: B.A. project Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź contact: design.kuzminsky@gmail.com
The designer makes use of coffee waste, transforming it into a material to produce décor elements for cafés. The author follows the principle of “Brew, drink, and recycle”: thanks to his cooperation with local coffee houses, he had an opportunity to learn about the premises’ interior design requirements and was guaranteed access to the basic resource – used coffee grounds. By combining coffee waste with resin, he created a special material which could then be used to produce tiles. The project is entirely safe as it meets all the standards for objects intended to come into contact with food.
