IT WORKS WITH EVERYTHING Canvas can be used in both Facebook and Instagram to meet a variety of business objectives and creative requirements. On the next few pages, we'll cover how each of these ad formats work and how to use them with Canvas.

CREATIVE TIPS

How do I know which to choose? Deciding which entry point fits your needs might take some testing, but the advantage of Canvas is that once you create one, you can reuse that Canvas as much as you like. Here are two strategies to help you find answers.

1

Try multiple entry points that go to the same Canvas. You can look at the measurement data and see which worked best for your business objective. Test the most recently launched entry points like Collection.

2

Use the same approach to test different pieces of creative with the same entry point. Example: You have 3 videos, and you aren't sure which to choose. Create 3 different single video ads, and have them all go to the same Canvas.

INSTAGRAM STORIES TO CANVAS Instagram story ads play between your followers’ stories, so they fit in seamlessly in with other content. Canvas is a great way to extend the full screen experiences of Stories into a richer environment. When users swipe up from a story for more detail, rather than load mobile web site that can take up to 8 seconds, Canvas can deliver images, video and sound in under 2 seconds making the experience more seamless and reducing drop off rates.

Progress bar Shows how much time is left in the video or image

Hero can be video or image Regardless of which you use, the file uploaded has to be 1920 x 1080 pixels (9:16) vertical. If the file is not the correct dimensions it will be automatically cropped to fit.

Swipe up carrot A See More promote will appear over the carrot for 3 seconds and then disappear. This promotes the viewer to swipe down and find the Canvas below.

COLLECTION TO CANVAS Collection is an ad format that combines a hero image or video with 4 thumbnails. Depending on objective, the thumbnails can either be product images from a product set or previews of the content within a Canvas. This is the most efficient entry point to date to drive higher Canvas opens and combines the power of visual imagery and videos at the same time. See page 19 for more insight into how to customize the thumbnails using brand objectives.

SINGLE IMAGE IN FACEBOOK TO CANVAS A single still image is the most widely used format for Canvas, and a good place to begin if you want to get started building with Canvas. The image you choose has a big impact on how people respond to your ad, so focus on an image that is closely aligned to what the person will find after they tap.

Carrot We have seen positive results in open rates when the creative draws attention to the carrot There is a "Tap To Open" call to action that hovers above the carrot and will disappear after 4 seconds.

Instagram feed is the newest entry point in the Canvas family. Because Instagram is a great place for connecting people to the brands they love, it's the perfect place to tell a rich story using Canvas. With Instagram feed to Canvas, you have the benefit of using an image or a video as your entry asset, allowing freedom to use your best imagery. Adding a Canvas is a great way to increase the user experience from Instagram with it's instant load time and seamless storytelling.

CAROUSEL IN FACEBOOK TO CANVAS The carousel format allows you to showcase up to 10 images or videos within a single ad, each with its own link that can be tied to a Canvas. You can showcase different products, highlight specific details about one product, or tell a story about your brand that develops across each carousel card.

Image: has to be 1200 x 628 (16:9) Video: square format 1080 x 1080 (1:1)

Headline Left justified and up to 80 characters

Call To Action Choose from the vast call to action list to find the one that works best for you.

Video offers more size options than a still image, so experiment with what size works best for you. Square and vertical are popular choices because the capture more attention in feed. With video, the marketing objective you choose effects how the Canvas loads. For example, if you choose video views, the video will continue to play at the top of the Canvas after click. If you choose conversion objectives, the Canvas will open with the first component at the top of the Canvas.

THE COMPONENTS OF CANVAS Header Headers are optional and remain fixed to the top of the screen, ideal for simple branding.

Photo This component allows you to add a single image to your Canvas and it is the most versatile tool in the builder. Find out why on the next page.

Text

Aa

A simple text box with a max of 500 characters. Great for adding information above or below images and videos.

Video This component allows you to add a single video to your Canvas. Videos in Canvas auto play and sound-on is dependent on the devices settings.

Carousel This component allow you to include a series of still images that people viewing your Canvas can swipe through.

Button Buttons contain links that take people who tap them to a microsite, app store or to another Canvas. If your button is the last component, be sure to enable swipe to open final link in your settings panel.

Store Locator The store locator is a component used to direct people to your store based on their current location. If used the store locator is always the last component.

GET CREATIVE Aside from store locator and the header, components can be added in any order, so your creative possibilities are endless. On the next few pages, we'll give you insider information on ways we've found to get the most out of these components and use them creatively.

Fit To Width (Linkable) Minimum image width of 1080 pixels Choose this option if you want your image to behave like a button. Perfect for linking to a mobile site or another Canvas.

Fit To Width (Tap to Expand) Minimum image height of 1920 pixels Choose this option if you want your user to get a closer look. The image behaves similar to a Tilt to Pan when tapped and goes back to normal when tapped again.

Fit To Height (Tilt to Pan) Minimum of Image height of 1920 pixels If selected, this option justifies the image to the top and bottom of the screen. Any content out of view can be viewed when the device is tilted.

PHOTO

A full-height photo is 1,920 pixels high, but you can make your photo as small as 10 pixels high, or taller than the screen height.

Video and Photos are similar in the way we use them creatively. In both cases they don't have to be any specific aspect ratio and you can include dierent shapes and sizes of each throughout your Canvas.

A Tilt to Pan image is a great way to add interactivity to your Canvas and increase engagement. We see higher numbers of Canvas complete rates when a Tilt to Pan image is used within the few components, but not the very first one. Due to the image covering the screen completely from top-to-bottom, the user may not realize there is content below. For a Tilt to Pan, we recommend an image no larger then 3 screen lengths wide for the sake of bandwidth, but you can go up to 5 screens wide. The wider the image, the more it will move when you tilt your device.

CREATIVE TIPS

1

If you would like to create a forced pause in your canvas as someone scrolls, a trick is to set your image as Fit to Height. If you don't want the Tilt to Pan motion, just craft your image with 1 extra pixel on each side. There won't be enough image to move with a tilt, but the tool will think there is information out there.

2

If you find the button component limited for branding, make an image that looks like a button, and then add the URL to your image.

3

You don’t have to use standard aspects ratios for images in Canvas, opening the door to tons of creative experimentation. For instance, you could use images taller than the screen's height and stacked together to create one large seamless image as you scroll down.

Fit To Width Minimum image width of 1080 pixels Choosing this option will allow your video to align perfectly to the sides of your screen. This is your best choice for vertical videos. Fit To Height (Tilt to Pan) Minimum of Image height of 1920 pixels If selected, this option justifies the video to the top and bottom of the screen. Any content out of view can be viewed when the device is tilted.

VIDEO

Like Photo, a full-height video is 1,920 pixels high, but you can make your videos as small as 10 pixels high, or taller than the screen height.

Video and Photos are similar in the way we use them creatively. They don't have to be any specific aspect ratio and you can include dierent shapes and sizes of each throughout your Canvas.

Along with standard video, this component can also support a 360 video.. Learn more about 360 Video You can have multiple videos in your Canvas, but for the best loading speed, the collective run time should not exceed 2 minutes If two videos are on screen at once only the one most prominently in screen will play. Videos can not contain a link and be tappable like a photo. Use a button or photo in conjunction with your video if you want it to link to another location.

CREATIVE TIPS

1

Like Photos, you don’t have to use standard aspects ratios for video in Canvas. Try crafting extreme vertical videos that are taller than 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels. Using videos taller than the screen height can create seamless motion that continuously plays as you scroll down.

2

Upload the best version of your video and don't compress ahead of time. Let the tool compress because it will give you the best results based on bandwidth. Also, all videos will display at 24 fps, so if you upload a higher frame rate file, it will clock down.

Swipe Carrots An arrow pointing right will subtlety bounce on the right side of the first image, encouraging a swipe. Once a swipe happens, you will see an arrow appear on the left, indicating there is content to the left. These arrows will always point to content.

Down Carrot Once you reach the last frame of a carousel, a down arrow will appear indicating you have reached the end and signaling the user to swipe in a new direction.

Pagination Dots At the bottom of each image, you will find a line of dots. The number of dots will equal the number of cards in a carousel. As the user swipes, the highlighted dot will move, showcasing where they are in the carousel set.

CAROUSEL A carousel is a series of still images that people viewing your Canvas can swipe through. Because they are images, they can be tappable and each card can have the same link or different links. Tapping an image will send people to the link's URL.

10 images per carousel max All images in the carousel have to be the same size, If they aren’t the tool will auto crop all images to match the first image in the carousel. Images can be as small as 100 pixels high and taller than the height of your screen. Carousel images will always be fit to width of the screen. If you want to add a link to a carousel card, you must select the Fit to width option for that card's image.

CREATIVE TIPS

1

Because each image of a carousel can be tappable, you can use linked Canvas to create a choose your own adventure Canvas. Simply make each slide point to another Canvas.

2

You can create multiple carousels in a CANVAS. If you stack carousels on top of each other, you can create mix-and-match games.

3

Many people use them to showcase different products, or services they offer. You an also use it to show different views of a specific product.

Header An image that appears (and remains fixed) at the top of your Canvas.

Aa

Text Block A simple text box with a max of 500 characters. Great for adding information to images, carousels, and videos when paired with them.

Button A visually streamlined, tappable link that has a max of 30 characters for your call to action.

HEADER, TEXT, & BUTTON These elements allow for fast downloads, and easy configuration, but can be limited in their design options. You can use the Photo component to replace them, giving you more creative control over the appearance of buttons and text in your Canvas.

Header: If your header doesn't fit the recommended width, you can select a background color to fill in the empty space. Header: For best results, your image should be 66 x 882 pixels. Text: Font styles like bold, italic or underlined must be applied to the entire text block. You cannot apply to individual words Button: You can create a button that stays locked to the bottom of your canvas. This is a good option if your objective is to click out of the canvas.

CREATIVE TIPS

1

Header: A header can be useful for branding, but some brand identities don't read well in a small size. If you still want a header, but more space to brand, create an image that looks like a banner and make it the first component in your CANVAS.

2

Text: If you find the text module limited, create an image with text designed anyway you like.

3

Button: Make sure you have swipe to open enabled in the settings for your Canvas if you have a button as the final component. It allows the person to open the final link of your Canvas by swiping up. We have seen better better metrics for customer acquisition when this setting is enabled.

Hero

Using Carousel

The video or image from feed will remain at the top of your Canvas and the thumbnail choice you make loads below.

Your thumbnail can go to any image in your canvas. This includes any slide within a carousel.

Creating Thumbnails By default, the thumbnail will be the center square of the image you choose, but you can adjust to any square 100 x 100 pixels within the image.

Square Image

COLLECTION CANVAS Using a Collection with a Canvas allows the user to tap on thumbnails and navigate to any image located in your Canvas. This includes an image in carousel. It's a great way to let your viewer decide how they want to enter your Canvas.

If you choose a square image, the thumbnail will show the whole image by default, but if you prefer a tighter crop, you can easily adjust.

CREATIVE TIPS

Large image 1

Make your hero video open-ended. The thumbnails can let people continue the story by choosing their own adventure.

2

Have the thumbnails show more stories of your products and services that weren't featured in your hero video, allowing people to explore more.

3

Feature the characters from a movie, TV show or a commercial so your audience can learn more about each character.

Canvas Strategies

20

Canvases Each linked canvas can have their own layout or share a common layout. AS the user moves through linked canvas make it clear where they are in your navigation and how to get back to where they were.

Create Choices For linked Canvas, a common approach is to start with a simple choice page that showcases the choices. After the viewer chooses a direction, the following Canvases can add more information.

Back Button

LINKED CANVAS

The back button in a linked canvas takes you back in history, not all the way back to Feed. This is important if you create a large number of linked steps. If your viewer wants to go back to feed they will have to click the arrow multiple times.

You can create multiple Canvases and link them together, creating a deeper dive into your business and letting the viewer decide how they want to learn about your business. Any component that allows a link can be used to link canvases together. CREATIVE TIPS

1

We have seen people gameify Canvas and craft choose-yourown-adventure approaches that have increased dwell time while adding delight to the experience.

2

If you have two important things you want to say, but can't decide which is best, try both approaches and let the viewer decide which works best for them.
