Why Sheep Don’t Own Limousines or Private Jets One of the most influential statements I ever heard about success I fortunately heard when still very young, on a recording by a man named Earl Nightingale. Earl said that if you were setting out to accomplish something and had no role models to emulate, you could get a good start by looking at what everybody else was doing – and NOT doing it, because, statistically, the majority is always wrong, especially when it comes to money. I have since phrased it this way: sheep don't own limousines or live in mansions or fly about in private jets. What’s popular is not necessarily profitable, except for those popularizing it. I know that what's hot is hot and I am often not. I'm not trendy. But I will match up against any teacher the number of people who attest to making millions of dollars following my lead and who continue following my lead for 7, 10, 15 or even 25 years. What I am going to share with you now has stood the ultimate test, the Test of Time – and is at work this minute, making the incomes and lives of those who know it richer. Tools change constantly. Media changes constantly. All of that is fluid, not foundational.
How Magnetic Influence Is As Reliable As Gravity
There are certain principles of magnetic influence that are as reliable as is gravity, that can be applied by you to any moneymaking enterprise, that make all practical tools more powerful, all viable media more useful, and make reaching goals easier and more certain. The making of money in any business enterprise, product category or subject area that interests you gets a whole lot easier when we put tools in their proper place – as tools. Would You Rather Be Batman or Superman? There's a choice you're being led to – so I might as well reveal it. Batman and Superman are iconic superheroes, but actually Batman has no super powers at all. He has only tools: the computer in the Bat-Cave, the Batmobile, his Bat-Belt of gadgets – somewhat like James Bond always has his gadgets. But Batman can be injured or killed just as you or I can. In Batman stories, he has had his back broken. He also ages just as you and I do. Superman actually has super strength, super speed, super vision, super hearing – and we can imagine some other super powers only Lois Lane is familiar with! Other than with one weapon, some meteor rock in rare supply, he cannot be hurt or killed and doesn’t age. Bullets fired at his chest bounce off. Now, if you could get gifted to you Batman's tools or Superman's super-powers, which would you choose? Think carefully. You can always buy tools or pay people to use tools for you as I do.

The Marketing Success Secret I Proudly Stole from Joe Sugarman Maybe you know my friend Joe Sugarman made most famous by his Blu-Blocker sunglasses commercials. I’ve known Joe for many, many years and studied him from afar before I ever met him. I’ve been to his magnificent beach-front home in Hawaii, and amongst other fun, there watched a Microsoft 'big cheese' self-destruct like a cheap suit in a driving rainstorm, making a presentation to a room full of savvy direct marketers. The poor fellow was out of his league. Heck, he didn’t even know what league he was playing in. Anyway, Joe Sugarman led the modernization of mail order to direct marketing as an innovative pioneer. He built a mail-order giant called JS&A that for years, was the dominant presence with multiple full-page ads in all the airline magazines, Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere.
They promoted an endless parade of gadgets, some as mundane as the desktop electronic calculator – made mesmerizing, made fascinating, made status symbols, made gotta-have’s by Joe's sales copy. JS&A was the inspiration for The Sharper Image. Anyway, I want to tell you about a very valuable marketing strategy I personally learned by theft from him. Joe called his company, JS&A, "America's Largest Single Source of Space-Age Products." This was at a time of first man on the moon, of America absolutely fascinated by NASA. I believe Joe began calling his company this when it was an infant. It may never have out-sold Radio Shack or even Sears in quantity of space-age products, but his company undoubtedly shipped the most such items from a single warehouse direct to customers – and they specialized only in such gizmos and gadgets. It was a clever truth. I recognized it as such when I first saw it. In 1983, when I created a company called SuccessTrak, I dubbed it at birth “The Largest Integrated Publishing and Training Company on Practice-Building Serving the Chiropractic and Dental Professions.” This was true because ours was the only company at the time mixing the two kinds of doctors in the same seminars, selling them the same programs.
This Strategy Can Quickly Make You Number One In YOUR Category Almost from birth, I've said that my NO B.S. MARKETING LETTER is THE largest paid-circulation newsletter in its genre, which is teaching direct marketing strategies for non-direct marketing businesses.
Today, its circulation is quite large, but the first month with four subscribers, the statement was still technically true – ours is a one publication genre. When I first put out my Magnetic Marketing System I labeled it THE best-selling program of its kind, and kept to myself the fact it was the only one of its kind. It's sold over 70-million dollars’ worth, so it has earned its positioning. Joe says that you need to establish your authority (or your company's or product's authority) in every sales presentation, ad, letter, whatever, every single time. That is what he did for JS&A with his invented clever truth. I do it habitually for every creation, every client, every product, every offer – often by using the tactic I swiped from him: the invention of a category of one in which you can instantly be #1. It's not the only way to construct a clever truth conveying great authority, but it's a good one. This is something you can bring to your communication about yourself and whatever you seek to exchange for money from the marketplace immediately. Make note of it as: ESTABLISH YOUR AUTHORITY WITH CLEVER TRUTH. But there's more. This links to what advertising folks call positioning, or for existent businesses, re-positioning.
How To Avoid Being Just One Of The Crowd Simply put, you can present the same thing one way and get “ho-hum” disinterest and be seen as just one of many.
Or you can present the exact same thing in a different way and be seen as exciting and different, even one in a category of one. Drive down any street where there is one fast food joint and you'll find a row of fast food joints‌ a blur of them. Where's the differentiation, designed to be magnetic to a certain WHO? More than 10 years ago, Subway embraced a guy named Jared who went from fat to fit on a diet of Subway sandwiches, and this very influential message has fueled their growth to the #1 chain. It does take some very big, brass balls to position a food shop selling foot-long loaves of bread as a weight loss program, but they've pulled it off. They successfully created UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION BASED POSITIONING. That's the second of my three points. I'll give you a quick illustration of it from the information-marketing world where I mostly live. In the insurance and financial services industry, every insurance salesman and financial advisor wants more leads, more appointments and more new clients. He wants to get them with less stress and struggle, and if he gets them by holding free seminars, he hates what they call 'plate-lickers' – people in the room just for the free food. The trade journals read by these financial professionals are chock full of advertisers promising to get them more leads, more clients, fill their seminars with a plethora of tools; more and better web sites, social media, mailings, etc. and to boost their closing ratios with better sales presentations, power point presentations and sales scripts and techniques. The ads offering all this tend to pull about 200 leads in any one month, in any of these journals.
A client of mine and I also sell means of getting more leads, more appointments, more clients, doing seminars without free meals and closing more sales to this same industry. But we launched by advertising information titled: “Creating Trust In An Understandably Un-Trusting World: The Secret Desires Of Today's Clients And How the Financial Advisor Can Prosper By Fulfilling Them Or Be Punished By Ignoring Them” Our ads pulled over 600 responses; 300% more responses, and better quality responses to boot. Our online marketing is kicking butt too. Why? We did a “Subway”. We used unique positioning. There are lots of ways to find your unique positioning opportunity, by the way… 14 that I teach. One I've used is by focusing on what I'm not, rather than what I am – that's my now famous NO B.S. brand. Gluten-free foods and O-calorie soft drinks share the same basic approach. However, being opposed to something, anti-something, as I am with NO BS, is stronger positioning than just being absent something. If you'd like to do some research on that. I suggest two books: Propaganda by Edward Bernays The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. Okay, there are two of three.
ESTABLISH AUTHORITY is one.
UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION BASED POSITIONING is the second.
These two directly link to a very important secret I mentioned earlier – the higher the income, the more you're paid for WHO you are, not WHAT you do. That IS a game-changer. Now, the third point: BEING ON TARGET WITH A MOTIVATIONAL REASON FOR BUYING. The most certain way to go broke and stay broke is insisting that everybody's your customer. It may be true that everybody could or even should buy your product but it is never true that everybody is motivated to buy.
The Magic Of Knowing Why People Really Buy A quick story: I had an info-marketer client with a good system for dentists to make an extra $50,000 to $100,000 a year using their offices only on Saturdays, with somebody else doing all the work – the details don't matter. We quickly saw that the buyers were almost all 50 to 60 years old. We dug into why they were buying, and discovered their motivation was to stack up money for retirement. This allowed us to devote more resources towards marketing solely to dentists over the age of 50 and to reposition the product and its story as “the best way for a dentist to add an extra $500,000 to $1-million to his retirement fund in 5 to 10 years with no extra work and no savings taken from current income". Because we got on target with a buyer group's motivational reason for buying, we brought in huge sums at blinding speed, easily. I could tell you 100 different stories – very different in their businesses – with breakthrough results from precisely the same play: being on target with a motivational reason for buying.
All three of these tactical applications are of the same Influential Communication and Game-Changer Marketing Gold Key #3: which is: People want something new, unusual and different.

Why These Times Are Challenging For Some For now, I want to conclude on a big-picture or even philosophical note.
Recent and current times are challenging times for many; maybe for you – maybe financially, maybe emotionally. The message swirling all around us is: shrink and think small. I would like to urge thinking bigger, but not in some fatuous, fantastical way. The opportunity to think bigger and reap bigger harvest is earned by being bigger. When you are able to position and present yourself in a way the market will reward, and able to communicate in a more influential way, then… All media works better Things seem to almost magically fall into place Giant leaps forward at fast pace are possible. That would never be achieved just by adding more tools to the toolbox.
A Last Example… Before we go, I want to cite just two examples directly related to just Gold Key #3 I've examined here. I'm not going to name these two men, both clients of mine, but I assure you, they are real; I would not dare make these details up for a publication like this even if I were so inclined; and I can document every fact if need be. They are both, essentially, information marketers, however the SAME opportunity to use Gold Key #3 for very dramatic results exists in all kinds of businesses. One had a small, local business that was successful, but he felt limited and constrained by it, and had bigger ambitions, and contemplated walking away from it to try and find better opportunity in some new and unfamiliar field.
I advised, instead, converting everything about his successful business into a system to be sold to others in his field – but positioned uniquely, as there were already at least 100 good competitors in a market of less than 50,000 buyers. Following my plan, very much dependent on Gold Key #3, he generated over $8.4 million of front-end revenue from initial sales and put in place over $5 million in continuing yearly continuity income in just 36 months. He used four main media outlets: trade journal ads, direct-mail, a web site, and a seminar. His company was recently awarded top rankings by two business magazines, and valued by Wall Street analysts at $30 million. The other also entered a very crowded, cluttered content niche, where savvy Internet marketers abound – all selling the same kind of opportunity to the same audience. By focusing on Gold Key #3, and, in particular, “Subway-ing” that opportunity, we created such profoundly unique positioning for the same opportunity that he has not only been able to establish an entirely automated money machine, but also able to use the other leaders in the industry's tired and unresponsive lists and generate huge sales from them! His \own business produces between $500,000 and $2 million a month, fueled almost entirely by mailing postcards driving customers to web sites, and by email campaigns to other industry leaders' lists, driving customers to prerecorded teleseminars. I might add that neither of these people are maintaining extensive social media activity, blogs, YouTube videos, and the like. They're doing fine, keeping it simple.
But the more important point is that everything they've done to succeed, in two fields where many are struggling and blaming the economy, anyone with a true understanding of all seven of my Gold Keys could do. YOU CAN create that kind of income for yourself too, armed with my System.
