INITIAL DESIGN BRIEF The initial design brief of the project was to simplify the already existing home automation in the market and come up with a new range of smart switches for their new launch in the direction of smart home systems.
Further elaborating in this direction, keeping the problem statement in mind, come up with a design solution that fulfils the need of target user. Focusing on today’s competitive market, the concept is aiming at improving the home automation by simplifying it. The brief further narrows down or modified as the project moves on, depending on the market and user research, aligning to the standards of the company in terms of the product range it makes adding to its sales and demand in the market.

TYPES OF HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM 1. DTMF Controlled DTMF is acronym for Dual Tone Multi Frequency. So, just think when you make call for customer care, they will ask you to press 1, 2 or any other number. When you press a number from your mobile, one particular action is happening. All this is because of DTMF. When a button is pressed in your mobile keypad, it will generate a tone of two frequencies. These tones are called row and column frequencies.
•
These frequencies for DTMF are chosen in such a way that they don’t have harmonic relation with the others, hence they will not produce same tones.
•
DTMF encoder is present in your mobile and decoder is HT9107B IC.
•
IC consists of an inbuilt operational Amplifier. This op-amp is used to separate low and high frequencies.
•
Then it is passed to the encoder circuits, this is then connected to the relay (used to turn the switch on and off).

WI-Fi Transceiver What does Wi-Fi stand for? There are a number of theories about what the term means, but the most widely accepted definition for the term in the tech community is Wireless Fidelity.
What is Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is a technology that uses radio waves to provide network connectivity. A Wi-Fi connection is established using a wireless adapter to create hotspots - areas in the vicinity of a wireless router that are connected to the network and allow users to access internet services. Once configured, Wi-Fi provides wireless connectivity to your devices by emitting frequencies between 2.4GHz - 5GHz, based on the amount of data on the network. https://www.ponturecarga.com/blog/proxima-generacion-de-las-redes-inalambricas
An Introduction to Wi-Fi Wireless technology has widely spread lately and you can get connected almost anywhere; at home, at work, in libraries, schools, airports, hotels and even in some restaurants. Wireless networking is known as Wi-Fi or 802.11 networking as it covers the IEEE 802.11 technologies. The major advantage
•
of Wi-Fi is that it is compatible with almost every operating system, game device, and advanced printer.
26

IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802).
•
802.11g is an IEEE standard Wi-Fi wireless networking technology.
How Wi-Fi works? Like mobile phones, a Wi-Fi network makes use of radio waves (3) to transmit information across a network. The computer (4) should include a wireless adapter that will translate data sent into a radio signal. This same signal will be transmitted, via an antenna, to a decoder known as the router (1). Once decoded, the data will be sent to the Internet through a wired Ethernet connection. As the wireless network works as a two-way traffic, the data received from the internet will also pass through the router to be coded into a radio signal (2) that will be received by the computer’s wireless adapter.

What are Hotspots? The term hotspot is used to define an area where WiFi access is available. It can either be through a closed wireless network at home or in public places such as restaurants or airports. In order to access hotspots, your computer should include a wireless adapter. If you are using an advanced laptop model, it will probably include a built-in wireless transmitter already. If it doesn’t, you can purchase a wireless adapter that will plug into the PCI slot or USB port. Once installed, your system should automatically detect the WiFi hotspots and request connection. If not, you should use a software to handle this task for you.

You need a screen with wi-fi connectivity in order to operate each and every home appliance from one place.
•
Zigbee and Zwave are the most famous companies that makes the electronic chips for home automation devices. Almost every company uses these chips in their devices.
•
You can control each and every appliance at home, those who requires current to turn them on.
•
There are smart speaker available in the market to operate the home with your voice commands.
•
You can also change the light’s colour, change intensity and can also set the moods and timers for it.
•
Appliances can be controlled from anywhere in the world by using a smart phone, but to do this you need internet.
•
It does not require internet when your smart phone and home appliances are connected to the same network i.e. if your smart phone and appliances are connected to the same wi-fi router at your home.

TYPES OF SMART HOME SMART SWITCHES A smart switch is still a light switch, but with advanced features that help automate your home. They resemble traditional switches and plug into the same spaces that traditional outlets are found. They have radio wave capabilities that allow the switches to connect to a nearby wireless network and become part of the Internet of Things. This makes the devices “smart and gives them an array of capabilities, including app or voice control.
SMART BULBS A smart bulb (smart light bulb) is a Wi-Fi-enabled LED light bulb with additional features to enable remote control, automation, customization and other abilities (like changing colours and brightness). With the integration of Wi-Fi, Blue-tooth or proprietary connections for home automation systems, smart bulbs can be controlled via smart phone apps or home automation hubs.
SMART PLUGS A smart plug is a power receptacle that plugs into a traditional electrical outlet and integrates it into your smart home network, allowing you to control whatever you plug into it from an app on your smart phone or with your voice through a virtual assistant.

WHY SMART SWITCHES ? Instead of smart bulbs and smart plugs
•
Smart light switches are easy to install, you can move them easily whenever you want, but the smart switches are one-time installation then every single outlet becomes smart to use.
•
Every outlet can be controlled with a phone including fans and every other outlet you have at home, but it is very specific in smart bulbs and smart plug type of home automation.
•
Switches last longer than plugs and bulbs.
•
Smart bulbs type of home automation is costlier than others.
•
Smart bulbs can change the colour but that function lacks in smart switches type of home automation. But you can dim the lights and change the speed of the fan.
•
Smart switches type of home automation offers you more to control than others, you can unlock your door, put some sensors like smoke detector, water leakage, gas leakage sensors to make your home safer.
•
You can also add a proximity sensor to turn on lights at night if you reach closer to the switch.

Electronic Switches
• The electronic switches are generally called as solid state switches because there are no physical moving parts and hence absence of physical contacts. Most of the appliances are controlled by semiconductor switches such as motor drives and HVAC equipment. • There are different types of solid state switches are available in today market with different sizes and ratings. Some of these solid state switches include transistors, SCRs, MOSFETs, TRIACs and IGBTs.

LIGHT SWITCHES
A switch is an electrical component that can “make” or “break” an electrical circuit, interrupting the current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The mechanism of a switch removes or restores the conducting path in a circuit when it is operated. It may be operated manually, for example, a light switch or a keyboard button, may be operated by a moving object such as a door, or may be operated by some sensing element for pressure, temperature or flow. A switch will have one or more sets of contacts, which may operate simultaneously, sequentially, or alternately.

PLACEMENT OF SWITCHES AT HOME Where to install Switches and Sockets for Safety and Aesthetics? When you are designing your home’s interiors, electrical wiring and switchboards need to be planned so that they don’t become an eye sore that takes away from the overall look of your home once the project is completed. Positioning the switches in every room needs careful thought. They should be easily accessible, but wellconcealed so that they don’t distract from the room’s design style or theme. Additionally, in a home with young children, from a safety aspect, the switches need childproofing to keep them out of reach of little fingers.

MARKET & TREND RESEARCH The market research includes going through the websites of various existing brands working in the direction of smart light switches, identifying their branding tricks through their media updates from platforms like personal websites. The existing trend if found, also gave an idea about the scenario of design and their target audiences. The local market is studied by visiting their shops in the locality. After conducting the market research I came across many brands that are acting as a strong competitor to GM Modular, naming few like Belkin, Logitech, Noon, Insteon, iDevices and many more. All these brands specialize in advanced switches and have a much defined design form and language acting as really strong competitor of GM Modular. Talking about few of these brands and their designs one can easily find out how are they different.

EXISTING SMART SWITCHES
1. ROCKER SWITCHES A rocker switch is an on/off switch that rocks (rather than trips) when pressed, which means one side of the switch is raised while the other side is depressed much like a rocking horse rocks back and forth. A rocker switch may have a circle (for “on”), on one end and a horizontal dash or line (for “off”) on the other to let the user known if the device is on or off.

3. TOUCH SWITCHES Touch switches work like a touch-screen. A little touch sensor is placed under the glass panel. This sensor is capacitive, meaning it only detects the touch of a human finger, thus preventing unwanted switching. The entire front panel is completely flat and made out of crystal glass. The switches are easy to connect, use and clean.

WHY TOUCH SWITCHES ? (Over mechanical switches) •
Mechanical switches got loose after some time.
•
Mechanical switches have visible electrical shocks.
•
Touch switches are more sensitive than mechanical switches.
•
Touch switches has a lot of flexibility, so there would be a wide variety of switches available for you to choose.
•
Touch switches enables designers to create attractive and distinct product.
•
Touch switch has fewer mechanical parts than a mechanical switch. This can reduce money and time to manufacture.
•
Fewer mechanical parts means lower risk of failure in the field.
•
Mechanical switches wear out or breaks easily.
•
Mechanical switches are less waterproof cause it has more gaps than touch switch.

CONCEPTUALISATION The concepts were made by keeping the directions and restrictions given by the sponsor of the project. The proper design process was followed to come up the final concept. There were few constrains to follow in my projects, the constrains was given by the sponsor of the project. The constrains was to make the range of switches into 2 modules (i.e. the size of 2 normal switches) and the socket will be of 3 module (i.e. the size of 3 normal switches). The colours was taken from the existing switch ranges of GM modular i.e. Dark grey, magnesia and white.

CONCEPT 1
Concept-1 is a series of GM Modular’s WI-Fi enabled Smart switches which includes 1 switch, 2 switch, 4 switch, dimmer, socket and USB. This series was inspired by ‘Domes’. Touch buttons are slightly projected so that the LED can be fit on the sides of the projections and the soothing light will come out of the sides from a translucent material. Material and the texture on the surface of the switch is the same as the existing switches of GM Modular. Numbering or the symbols on the switches are given by the standard numbering and symbols used in electronics language. LED lights are there to indicate if the switch is ON/OFF. Touch anywhere on the square shaped touch button to turn ON/OFF the switch. LED is ON = Switch is ON LED is OFF = Switch is OFF

INSPIRATION
What was the Inspiration ?? The Inspiration taken for this concept was ‘Historical buildings with Domes’.
Why Historical buildings with Domes ?? Indian people give a lot of attention and connect themselves with Indian history and its culture, and architecture is one major element that tells us our history. Building with a Domes is a famous type of architecture that is used in many famous Historical buildings in India hence they can connect themselves with it easily.

The round shaped switches are taken from one of the switches of GM Modular, from their simple and basic design. Individual LED indicators are given to each switch to know if its ON/OFF. Material and the texture on the surface of the switch is the same as the existing switches of GM Modular. Circular shape is the touch button (where only the touch will work). LED is ON = Switch is ON LED is OFF = Switch is OFF

INSPIRATION
What was the Inspiration ?? The Inspiration taken for this concept was ‘GM’s Touch Switches’.
Why GM Modular’s touch switches ?? After the discussion of the 1st concept with my head at GM Modular, He told me to take the already in market GM Modular’s switches as an inspiration for this series of smart switches. GM modular’s touch switches has basic shape touch buttons, and has individual LED lights for each switch. GM modular plays more with 2 modules, and every touch switch of GM modular are in 2 modules size only.

FINAL CONCEPT
The final concept was made with the feedbacks and directions given on the previous concepts given by the sponsor of the project. The inspiration for the concept was taken from the facial expression of the human face, specially from their eyes and the mouth. Concept was made by keeping the previous switches in the mind, to retain the language of GM Modular. The restriction was to keep the size of 2 Module i.e. the size of 2 basic switches. I had to make a series of switches which includes a 1switch, a 2switch, a 4switch, a fan regulator, a light dimmer, a socket, a drape controller, a door unlock button, a doorbell and a 20 amp switch.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Why Facial expressions ??
As an Inspiration
Because switches are the part of our home and we don’t change them often. We keep them in our home for more than 4-5 years, some of us keep them from more than 15 years and that is why the switches are one of the closest things to the user in their home. We see them couple of times in a day, we observe them subconsciously and hence they play an important role in our mood. A smile passed by or a frown can affect our mood greatly and by relating the switches to the expression of a face will definitely affect the mood of an user. Goal was to make a range of switch that interacts with the mood/emotion of the user (however small it is) and help them feel good.

Facial expressions Facial expressions are the voluntary and involuntary movements that occurs when one or more of the 43 facial muscles on the face are engaged. They are a rich source of non-verbal communication and display a vast amount of emotional and cognition information.

Eyes Touch button is an area on the surface of a switch where the switch responds by shifting its current position from On to Off or Off to On. By taking the ‘Eyes’ as an inspiration and by simplifying it further. I came up with there forms to use them as a touch button in GM’s new touch switch. These forms are made by kipping the LED indicator (to know if the switch is On/Off) in mind and simultaneously by following the GM’s language of simplicity and classiness.

FEEDBACK •
As per the initial concepts, there were almost all the expressions that was considered for designing switches. Later on considering the negative vibes that expressions like disgust, sadness, anger, contempt and fear gives, they were removed from the design concept.
•
Also the happy expressions along with blank eyes without brows looks Spooky and were also taken out from the design dictionary.
•
Considering the calmness of neutral expressions and emotions these were taken forward for the designing of the final switches.
•
Later on five switches were selected out of the developed designed inspired from the neutral expression, out of which two of them were taken forward for final production, one having round eyes and the other one with square eyes.

INSPIRATION
The Inspiration for the surface graphics on the switches was taken from the Rangoli, an Indian traditional art decoration. Its a decoration and patterns made with ground rice, particularly during festivals. It is usually made during Diwali or Tihar, Onam, Pongal and other Hindu festivals in India. The purpose of rangoli is decoration, and it is thought to bring good luck

The surface graphics I was going to make on the switches will be inspired by designs of Indian cultural art and crafts, which are purely originated in India. These are one of the switches, which has surface graphics on it, inspired by an Indian originated art ‘Rangoli’.
