THERAPY TO BE KNOWN GESTALT • One of the important therapies by Anil Thomas known as gestalt therapy • gestalt approach • The word “therapy” is a rather charged or effective term, and has many different sayings around the world. Some people view therapy as an essential tool for surviving the hazards of life, while others see it as harsh and unhelpful, pouring out your problems onto a stranger without properly facing or managing the underlying issues. • Regardless of what your personal take on therapy happens to be, most people would agree that the therapeutic process relates to self-exploration, self-revelation and healing, typically guided along by a trained therapist of one sort or another. There are many different philosophies that have guided the field of psychotherapy in the past century or so, one of which is gestalt therapy, a particularly unique and somewhat short-lived style with some remnants that can still be found in psychotherapeutic practices to this day.


GESTALT PSYCHOLOGY • gestalt psychology • One major critique that people have with psychotherapy is the undercurrent that they need to “change”, and that psychotherapy will somehow help them alter their mental state or habits and improve their life. This alteration can happen through an analysis of past events, a dissection of behaviour into underlying motivations, and the application of logic as a means of moving past personal issues, repressed or otherwise.


GESTALT COUNSELLING • gestalt counselling • The science of Gestalt Therapy works on the basic premise that much before any situation – be it pleasant or otherwise – affects a person at the mental or emotional level, the human body not only experiences it first, but also manifests the effects it has had on the person through non-verbal cues and bodily symptoms. With 93% of human communication being non-verbal in nature, Gestalt Therapy focuses on the incongruities between a person’s words and his non-verbal bodily cues that tell the real story behind the words. By focusing on experiencing one’s own body, breathing, levels of energy, and blockages in certain areas of the body, one is empowered to cleanse and heal himself, and march ahead in life without any baggage from the past. •

The emphasis is on working in the present without delving in the past and pondering into the future. The focus here is learning and understanding of how we construct and work with our groups, individuals and systems we are associated with.
