THINKING outside THE CAGE

By Katie Kurylo, Communications Coordinator

Can anybody find me…some bunny to love? At Animal Friends, we certainly can find you some bunny to love – it’s our specialty! February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month and the spotlight is on all of our adorable, adoptable bunnies. What could be nicer on a chilly winter’s night than snuggling with a warm ball of fur? Bunnies make wonderful companions! Each rabbit has a distinct personality and their own likes and

dislikes. Some bunnies are more active than others and love to play with toys especially made for their needs. Others are calmer and just want to be near you to bask in your attention and love. Animal Friends is hoppin’ with special rabbit events in February. Get your bunny fix or learn more about owning a bunny from our trained volunteers at one of our Bun Runs. Held almost every Saturday from 2:30 – 4 pm, these rabbit play sessions are Continued on page 2...

Spay/Neuter Surgeries in 2013!

On Thursday, December 19 – just 12 days shy of the end of the year – Animal Friends’ Low-Cost Spay/Neuter team completed the 10,000th surgery of the 2013! The lucky cat was Jackie, a young black female, brought in to be spayed by her caregiver Rebecca Lafferty. Rebecca found Jackie as a pregnant stray and brought her into her home so she could have a safe place to nurse and care for her kittens. Here at Animal Friends, we know that spay and neuter programs are the only way to proactively relieve the pet overpopulation problem in our region. In Allegheny County alone, conservative estimates show that 20,000 homeless animals are euthanized every year. The problem is simple: there are too many pets and not enough homes. Early this year, Animal Friends set a goal: To alter 10,000 pets in 2013. An unprecedented number for our organization, but one that is made possible through an aggressive lowcost spay/neuter program which includes in-house clinics,

a mobile surgical unit and strong partnerships with outside organizations and the city of Pittsburgh. While our staff and volunteers are beaming with pride - there’s still much more work to be done. We dream of a day when pets are no longer needlessly euthanized in Southwestern Pennsylvania. So, Animal Friends will continue to bring affordable, highquality surgeries to the pets in our region. And we’re prepared to step up our efforts even more. Please join us in celebrating this achievement. Visit www. ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org to make a donation now! And together, our community can drive pet overpopulation out of Southwestern Pennsylvania…for good.

Thank you to Bob and Janine Fragasso and all those who helped make the Fragasso Spay/Neuter Challenge a resounding success!

Your bunny can run and play while you talk shop with our trained volunteers and fellow rabbit lovers. Whether you’re a bunny veteran or merely curious about these long-eared critters, we hope to see you at Animal Friends during February’s special roundup of rabbit events. Who knows? Soul MuTTs

Elf

RocKY Are you looking for a fun-loving, bouncy canine companion? Then Rocky may be the one for you. He came to Animal Friends during our Liberation Day Rescue last July. We don’t know much about his past, but we do know he loves to play ball, is house trained and enjoys riding in the car. Rocky is very smart and knows commands like sit and give paw. Rocky would love an active home where he will get plenty of exercise. We’re sure Rocky will win the title of your best friend. This animal is sponsored by Edward and Anita Davis in loving memory of Benjamin & Molly.

4

Energetic, adorable Elf is looking for a forever home that will provide him with lots of exercise and entertainment! Because of Elf’s high energy, we feel he’d be best as an only animal and in a home with older children. Elf is very smart and active and is a great candidate for some of our Animal Friends’ University obedience classes! Then after class, he’d be very happy to snuggle down on the couch with you. So, what are you waiting for? Come say hello to Elf today! Thanks to Lawrence and Debra Bufalini for their sponsorship in memory of their parents, Joseph Ned and Rose Civello.

Rickon Perky-eared Rickon came to Animal Friends through our Humane Investigation department after he was found abandoned and living deplorable conditions. He doesn’t let that keep him down though! He’s happy, healthy and very active. This boy will fit in great with an active family, preferably with children over ten. How can you resist that goofy smile? Come for a run with Rickon today! A round of a”paws” for Joyce WaltnerBarmak and Fluffy Waltner for their sponsorship!

PHoenix Don’t let this salt and pepper face fool you - Phoenix is a young man at heart. This handsome eight-yearold is in great shape. He would love to take walks in the park with you! His foster family reported that he was a perfect gentleman and got along very well with their cats. They also noted that Phoenix is house trained and knows a number of commands. Phoenix is wonderful with people, and we think he would do well in a home with children older than eight. While he likes cats, he would prefer to be the only dog in your life. Jim Dembowski sponsored Phoenix in loving memory of Joe and Donna Weha.

ShelBy Shelby can be an independent spirit but she still enjoys quality snuggle time with her favorite humans. Shelby absolutely loves walks, an occasional run and goofing around in our outdoor play yards. Shelby is a great girl and very even-tempered. She’s a people dog and would prefer to be the only pet in your life. Come on down to meet Ginger today! Heartfelt thanks to Susan Mehring for her sponsorship!

Thanks to our Pets for Vets program, adoption is priceless for pets age 2 and up when you show your military ID!

GinGer

HannaH BraD Pitt Far better looking than the actor, Brad Pitt is a happy Bulldog/Beagle mix with striking eyes and a great smile. His foster mom raved about his personality and also reported that Brad is housebroken and a cuddle bug. He loves to chew on Bully-Sticks, play in the snow, and chase birds. He’d fit in perfectly with an active family who can give him plenty of exercise. And someone believes in him so much that they sponsored his adoption! He is truly priceless. Thank you to Nancy Kenyon and Misty for sponsoring Brad Pitt!

“Within the heart of every senior animal lies the singular desire to be loved,” is the motto of our Red Collar Society at Animal Friends. At 12-years-old, sweet Hannah is a member of that distinguished group of “experienced” pets. She’s wellmannered, jumps in the car for a ride, and easily climbs steps. She loves a nap on the couch, and doesn’t seem to mind other dogs. And because of her advanced age, she only needs light exercise, but plenty of hugs and kisses. Hannah is ready to enjoy the sunset of her life in a loving home.

Ginger was a stray brought to Animal Friends. She’s attentive, very social, confident and smart! She knows a few commands, including sit and shake but she would love to learn more with you. Playful and strong, we recommend an active family with no cats or kids under ten for Ginger. This beautiful brindle Labrador Retriever/ Akita mix is happy and outgoing and will add a little zest to your home. Ginger thanks Joyce Gorman for her sponsorship in honor of her parents, Walter and Ruth Genge.

Diana Diana is a beautiful and friendly three-year-old Pit Bull mix who makes up the larger half of our lovely odd-couple. This lucky girl has truly found her Prince Charming! They are a delightful couple who enjoy every moment together. Diana and Prince are so in love that they must spend their “happily ever after” together! These two are a match you’d only find in fairy tales! And someone believes in Diana so much, that they have sponsored her adoption! She’s truly priceless.

Prince This handsome three year old Chihuahua/ Dachshund mix is the tiny half of our incredibly cute odd-couple. This little guy is so charming he has captured the heart of the lovely lady Diana, a three-year-old Pit Bull mix. They are an adorable pair. They play, snuggle and sleep together and must spend their “happily ever after” together, too! Prince has also participated in our Therapets pet therapy program. He recently brought many bright smiles to residents at the Southwest Veterans Center. Prince thanks Charlene Dwulit for her sponsorship!

Ulysses Ulysses is a living example of the work we do at Animal Friends. Our Humane Investigations Department confiscated him from a home where he had been severely neglected. Our medical team sprang into action, putting weight on him and our volunteers worked tirelessly with him to ensure he would be ready for a forever home. Today, he is happy, playful and healthy. Ulysses is a wonderful boy looking for a second chance in a real, loving home. Someone believes in Ulysses so much that they have sponsored his adoption! He truly is priceless! We appreciate Elizabeth Howard’s sponsorship in memory of Floyd & Mitzie.

We’ll deliver a photo, biography and video of an adoptable pet to your inbox every Friday if you sign up here: www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/FurryFriday

Homeless Hoppers

THelma & Louise

THumper & Princess

These two friends have been together for a long time and while they might not have committed any felonies, they are true partners in crime and need to go home together. These two were left on Animal Friends’ doorstep in a cardboard box. Louise is the more relaxed, laid-back bunny of the pair while Thelma likes to take charge and is a little more outgoing. Come meet these two today and we’re sure that you’ll be glad you did. Thelma and Louise would like to thank Leona LaValley who gave in memory of Marcie and in honor of Merlin and Pippin.

Thumper is a wonderful young rabbit who has a sweet personality. Princess is an adorable rabbit who loves to love. Thumper and Princess have lived their whole lives together. They love each other and must go home together. These two girls came from another shelter as a transfer. If you would love to give these two ladies a home, please come down and meet them. A big bunny thump to Eric and Kathleen Snyder who sponsored in honor of their new family member, Ty!

Buns Just Want to Have Fun:

Enrichment for Rabbits

By Suzanne Denk, Enrichment Specialist An enrichment program for shelter animals can be essential for their wellness and the benefits to the animals are based in science. However for rabbits, enrichment is all about fun. They do not care that enrichment activities decrease stress, stimulate them physically and mentally, give them a feeling of control over their space, and keep them healthy. A rabbit’s cage space can be enriched with a ceramic tile to stay cool, a cubby to perch on and observe, and wind chimes in the room for their alert ears to enjoy. Tempt rabbit noses and stimulate their brain with a spritz on their cage floor of strawberry or banana extract mixed with water or a pinch of organic dry botanicals. Rabbits can briefly free roam together for an

6

exercise play date, to hide in tunnels and to toss oatmeal containers. Each day a new toy can be provided giving a rabbit the chance to think, learn, and play. Toy options for rabbits are easy, inexpensive and can be thrown away daily keeping the toys unique. Enrichment toys can include balls with bells, hay cubes, paper fans clipped to cage bars, cardboard tubes with fringed edges, paper lining from alfalfa pellet bags folded with pellets inside, paper twists with treats, organic apple tree branches (check with a local organic farmer in late winter/early spring when they prune), a hay stuffed cardboard tube ball, or hay wrapped with sisal. The rabbits always play enthusiastically. Remember, enriching the lives of rabbits in our care is not just fun and games. (Just don’t tell them because buns just want to have fun!)

GossiP Have you heard? It’s the talk of the town. We can’t understand why Gossip is still looking for someone special to love her, almost a year after she was rescued from a hoarding situation. Gossip loves other cats but she is a bit shy with people. She will reward a patient person with her trust and devotion. Adopt Gossip and give people something to talk about! Gossip’s adoption is now priceless due to the generosity of Bret and Christine Emick. Sponsored in memory of Patches and Peppers.

Spooky, a sleek, limber cat, has had it tough the past couple years. His previous owner passed away suddenly and for a while he lived in a house by himself with only short visits from family members to give him food and water. When he came to Animal Friends, he was confused and did not trust people. But with the love and care of our volunteers, Spooky is now a happy, healthy gentleman looking to spend the rest of his life in a loving home. Spooky thanks his sponsor Charlotte Cosharek who gave in memory of Jeff, Allan, Charlie, Micky & Pumpkin.

How can you not love a face like hers? Sunny was a stray and because of her life on the street, is blind in one eye. She doesn’t seem to notice her handicap though, and lives life to the fullest. She’s tugged on our heart strings from day one and is a very sweet girl. She’s about seven-years-old and looking for the good life in a loving home. Sunny would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Whiteside for sponsoring her in memory of Sam and Sadie Whiteside.

ClifforD This handsome boy was first adopted from Animal Friends as a kitten. But a few weeks ago, Clifford was returned to us after his family was no longer able to care for him. He’s spent the past few weeks getting comfortable and now is ready to find his forever home. Clifford’s a nice guy who is outgoing and loves people. He enjoys a cuddling in laps, especially during TV time! Thanks to Cindy and Richard Fraer for sponsoring Clifford!

TYson Tyson is a highly talented and intelligent cat that can actually give high fives! Just imagine watching the Pittsburgh Penguins and high-fiving your cat every time they score a goal. You’ll be the envy of the party. Tyson would prefer a home with older children or teenagers. He loves mental stimulation and challenges. Our behavior team can give you some suggestions of activities and games to play with Tyson to keep him on his toes! Come say hello to him today. Thank you to Meg Gilchrist who sponsored Tyson for Luc and Lily.

Animal Friends’ on-site pet supply shop and boutique has the basics and hard-to-find items for pets. Best of all, purchases benefit our shelter residents!

MaGnolia Magnolia is a beautiful cat. She is about five-years-old and came to Animal Friends because her owner could not take care of her any longer. She previously lived with teenagers and a dog. She would love to be in an active home, perhaps with a canine playmate to keep her entertained. Come and meet sweet Magnolia today! Magnolia thanks Melanie DeBoer who sponsored her in memory of Tasha, Buffy, Midnight, Muffin & Tom.

PantHer Kay She’s a delightful, petite Tabby cat with gorgeous white markings and emerald green eyes. She’s cautious but curious and likes to explore. During play time she enjoys stalking the string mouse and batting around ping pong balls. This bright-eyed seven-year-old is eager to please and would be a great companion for you in your home. Panther Kay thanks her sponsors John and Joyce Cushard who gave in memory of Joe and Anne Walcer and Ed and Jennie Lee Cushard.

StepHen Foster Named after the “father of American music” and Pittsburgh native, our Stephen Foster is a true gentleman. He’s a bit shy at first but that doesn’t make him any less lovable. He’ll settle beautifully in to a nice quiet home with no small children or other animals. He came to Animal Friends with his front-paws declawed and he loves a good lap to lie in, but turn him loose on a toy with a bell and his inner kitten will shine. So tune in and make music with this handsome fellow and make him your forever furry friend.

Sarasota Sarasota is a sleek, mature cat looking for a special home. Sarasota requires a little bit of extra care because of her frequent urinary tract infections. Her condition is very manageable and a special diet keeps the symptoms under control. She is a wonderful cat who would love to curl up in your windowsill and watch the world go by. She is a sweet, special girl and deserves a forever home! Sarasota thanks her sponsors, Fred and Carolyn Gallo.

Fountain Fountain was not well socialized as a kitten and can be quite shy at times, but will eventually warm up to you as you spend time with her. She gets along well with other cats, and likes gentle scratches on top of her head. Someone believes in Fountain so much, her adoption has been underwritten. She is truly a priceless pet. Maybe you can spout a new friendship with our Fountain!

Piñata This four-year-old sweetheart was rescued, along with many others, from an overcrowded and unsanitary home. She has some scarring on her eyes, but she seems to see pretty well. She’s tiny, gentle and quiet, but she’s getting braver by the day. She loves a good scratch on the head, a tasty treat, and playing laser tag. Piñata is asking for a chance to have a normal life. Our cats appreciate William and Susanne Young sponsorship in memory of their cat Snookie.

Meet some of our adoptable cats at Petco at 59 Fort Couch Road, Bethel Park, PA, 15241. Visit Monday through Saturday from 9 am – 9 pm or on Sunday from 10 am – 7 pm.

Ve t e r i n a r y I n f o Students from the Veterinary Assistant program at the Beaver County Career and Technology Center visited Animal Friends to learn about our life-saving work and the role of veterinary technicians in shelter medicine. We enjoyed having such an animal-loving group of teens here to meet some of our residents!

Animal Friends recently became a partner in the Veterinary Science Initiative (VSI). VSI, developed by Dr. Brittany Watson Tisa and De Daltorio of the Charleston Animal Society, teaches PA state standards through the lens of veterinary medicine. This program can be adapted to meet the needs of any high school classroom (components include science, reading, art, and role play) and will appeal to all animal lovers, not just those intending a career in the field. Interested teachers can see www.vsiprogram.com for more details.

Thanks to the many students who have been videoconferencing with Animal Friends! We enjoyed spending time with second grad ers from Avonworth Elementary this winter and teens from Allegheny County, Beaver Cou nty, Nebraska, and Taiwan who participa ted in our World Rabies Day videoconference this past fall. Teachers, librarians, and homesch oolers, please see our Animal Friends University listing for winter and spring offerings!

Here at Animal Friends we are fortunate to meet many animal-loving kids and teens, and one of their more common career interests is veterinary medicine. Students looking to learn more will enjoy two books:

ER Vets: Life in an Animal Emergency Room by Donna M. Jackson With over 80 pages, this book includes details about emergency cases, the role of an emergency room veterinarian and veterinary technician, and many photos – of animals, x-rays, and even surgeries. Horse lovers will enjoy the chapter about a newborn foal, and readers will cheer for the happy endings of the dogs and cats who receive life-saving care. (The level of detail in the surgery photos and one case without a happy ending make this book a recommended read for teens.)

Vet Emergencies 24/7 by Susan Evento This photo-packed book will appeal to ages 9-12. Most of the cases involve a great variety of dogs and cats but also feature a rabbit, ferret, hamster, turtle, python, and hedgehog. The fantastic layout – pages that look like a vet’s files – makes this an interesting read!

Animal Friends’ Therapets Beowulf: A Big Fan of the Therapets Program

dog and handler individual attention to help ensure our success.

By Sandy Mulligan, Animal Friends Volunteer Ever since he was a puppy, our Great Pyrenees, Beowulf, has been a rock star in fur. He has a larger than life stature and a personality to match. People stop their cars in the middle of the street to watch him walk past; tourists from foreign countries take their picture with him. Since being adored is what Beowulf does best, I often wondered about training him to become a therapy dog. But, I knew being irresistible wasn’t enough. He’d need to be comfortable and calm in new situations and environments. When I learned about Animal Friends’ prep classes for the new Therapets program, I decided it was now or never.

An initial evaluation confirmed my hunch that Beowulf had the temperament to excel as a therapy dog. Then we went to work in the classroom, brushing up on obedience commands and practicing exposure to things like wheelchairs, walkers, unexpected noises and erratic behavior. The instructors gave each

Our favorite part of the class was the site visit, when we got to try out the experience of being a therapy team. We went to Chatham University to visit students who were feeling homesick or stressed. Beowulf bypassed the nose-level lunch buffet – thanks to the obedience practice – and immediately began working the room. He got an invitation to snuggle in a dorm, and I’m pretty sure he ended up in a few Facebook posts. The interaction was meaningful for me, too. The students told me about their pets at home, and a few of them talked about

RE-TAIL therapy

Beowulf and I are very excited about becoming certified and working as a Therapets team. Bringing a smile to someone who’s lonely, sad or struggling is a wonderful experience. But doing it with your best friend at your side? There’s nothing more satisfying. Animal Friends is happy to report that Beowulf and his mom, Sandy, passed their Therapets Certification Test in December! They are looking forward to visiting at women’s shelters and working with children. To learn more about the Animal Friends Therapets program please contact our Therapeutic Services Coordinator, Lauren Rimkus, at 412.847.7039 or lrimkus@ ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.

It has happened to many of us. Even the most experienced of pet owners have felt the panic when a beloved pet slips out of the front door or escapes from a fenced-in back yard.
