Our progressive programs have been nationally recognized and include pet rescue, shelter and adoption services, behavior classes, educational and therapeutic outreach and more. We’re proud to introduce Animal Friends’ alum Cayenne as the face of Animal Friends’ Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month celebration. Cayenne was brought to us by her previous owners because they could no longer dedicate enough time to her care. After a few months at the shelter, Animal Friends volunteer Joe Thornton couldn’t resist her sweet smile and decided to take her home. Cayenne has done beautifully in her new home!

So what can you do to celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month? The obvious answer is to take one of our adorable, adoptable pets home! Any one of our shelter residents would make a great, furry addition to your family. Can’t adopt? You could become a foster parent! ! wrap-up Another great Black Tie & Tails is behind us, and even though we’re still cleaning up and icing down our sore dancing feet, we want to reflect on what an amazing time it was! The honor was all ours as we welcomed renowned illustrator Patrick McDonnell and his wife Karen O’Connell as this year’s Honorary Chairs. Patrick is the creator of the nationallysyndicated and much-beloved comic strip MUTTS, and we recognized him as the creative hero who promotes the benefits of shelter adoption and an animal-friendly philosophy with the help of his cast of quirky animal characters.
On Friday night, our Black Tie & Tails Running at Large event was a party within a party! Guests had the option of dancing the night away in a festive tent to our rockin’ party band No Bad JuJu or relaxing under the stars on our patio while enjoying a fire pit and gourmet s’mores!

On Saturday night, Collared and Tagged left our guests begging for more with live jazz, a formal dinner, premium liquors and fabulous prizes in our live and silent auctions. Best of all, we raised nearly $500,000 for the care of the homeless residents at Animal Friends. We want to extend a big thank you to all of our guests, volunteers and staff who made our 17th annual Black Tie & Tails a huge success. Thank you—and we hope we’ll see you again next year!

Spay it forward Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return: From the Alley... to Main Street By Kristina Hout, Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter Community Liaison Come celebrate compassion with Animal Friends this National Feral Cat Day on October 16! Animal Friends will be the center of activity for this day celebrating compassion for feral cats and humane population control through spay/neuter. Join feral cat caregivers, trappers and
animal welfare experts from 1 – 6 pm for free trapping demonstrations, expert advice and free cat food and straw (while supplies last). This will also be your one and only chance to purchase our famous winter cat shelters. The cost for a winter house is $5 and all proceeds go directly to the spaying/neutering of feral cats through Animal Friends. Compassion for feral cats is a yearlong venture for Animal Friends. Last year, Animal Friends altered and vaccinated 1,521 feral cats. Through July of this year, we’ve already altered and vaccinated 1,144 feral cats! We also advocate on behalf of feral cats and colony caregivers throughout Allegheny County. Our staff speaks at municipal meetings about the benefits of TNVR. Animal Friends offers low-cost spay/ neuter services for feral cats as well as individual counseling and training for colony caregivers. We also offer trap rental for caregivers with a scheduled appointment at Animal Friends. So, join us on October 16 and learn more about TNVR and how you can help the feral cats in your neighborhood go from the alley to main street.

We know that people and pets need each other. Sparty is a very special senior dog who needs a human companion more than most. He is blind and has experienced some hearing loss. Sparty is always ready to go for a short walk at the edge of our woods. Tyson is a blast to be around. We try not to pick favorites, but Tyson is very popular with our staff and volunteers. His constant zest for life and quest to find the next fun thing is a joy to be a part of. He seems to have a “don’t worry, be happy” attitude, something we can all learn from. When you meet this popular professor of play, you’ll surely get a laugh, and maybe a new best buddy. Tyson thanks Donald and Sandra Bialecki for their generous donation.
MiNDy How can you resist that smile? This lovely lady is a 2-year-old Pit Bull terrier mix. A bit timid at first, her friendly and social side quickly shines after a few pets on her golden head. She’s energetic and would make a great exercise partner. Ideally, her home will have children 6 years of age and older and no felines. Mindy might enjoy a canine brother or sister however. We can set up a meet and greet to see if your pup gets along with sweet Mindy. Mindy would like to give a “high paw” to the Good Times Softball Team, who knocked it out of the park with their donation in honor of Richard Hilliard.
RED This social and happy fellow is a 4 year-old Pit Bull terrier mix who’s a bit of a kisser. He’s also a good walker and, considering his high energy level, will make an outstanding exercise partner. Red is generous and affectionate, knows tricks and loves being showered with attention. Someone loves Red so much that they sponsored his adoption. So he is truly priceless. Thanks to Kathleen Shapiro for her sponsorship.

TuliP Mason Mason was brought to Animal Friends after a city police officer found him. He is very social and friendly and has an abundance of energy. An experienced home that knows how to channel his enthusiasm is ideal. He’s not a fan of cats and he would probably do best as the only dog in the house. Because of his passionate playfulness, a home with kids 15 and older is ideal. Mason gives a woof of thanks to George Ondis, who donated in memory of Tippy.
This perky-eared lady was abandoned by her owner, so she’s a little timid at first. But toss her a treat and you’ll see this sweetie bloom into your best friend. Tulip loves her squeaky toys and playing outside. Our volunteers have taken her on several outings, and she received an A+ on her behavior. They also said she is a gem of a passenger in a car. This lovely lady is looking for a home where she can bloom. Could it be yours? Tulip thanks Ronald Tiberio for his donation in honor of Sparky (the cutest Westie ever!)
Steve Steve is a down-to-Earth guy who enjoys the simple things in life. This perky-eared, wiggly canine is a little dynamo and relishes in a good deal of exercise. Steve understands some basic commands and needs a little help with his leash manners. And because of his excitable nature, Steve’s ideal forever family should include children older than 8. Molly Molly is a friendly gal who will waste no time in becoming your perfect playmate! Although she is somewhat timid initially, this wiggle-butt’s tail operates in high gear once she warms up to you. Molly enjoys walks and riding in the car. Molly’s potential forever family needs to accommodate her high exercise requirements, and develop appropriate behaviors through positive reinforcement. This sweet older lady is yearning for a home to spend her golden years. Julie is a 15-year-old female Welsh Corgi and German Shepherd mix. She enjoys being outdoors and walks very nicely on a leash. RicKY Ricky is a very playful bunny. She is curious and likes to explore her surroundings. She especially enjoys pushing her favorite ball around her pen, but will also lie quietly to be petted. THumPer Thumper is a wonderful Dutch mix rabbit with a sweet personality. She gets along well with the other rabbits and enjoys playtime. She would be a great addition to any family. Qualified Cats Looking for Work!
Animal Friends is seeking committed adopters for some very special working cats. These cats aren’t domesticated, but they aren’t fully feral either. Some were rescued from terrible situations by our Humane Officers where they often fended for themselves and learned to be very independent. These cats, while not typical house pets,

Ryan, a 3-year-old Harlequin mix, is a calm bunny who enjoys attention. He wasn’t always like that however. Ryan was rescued from a neglectful situation and was not used to humans. He was severely frightened by even the slightest touch or attention. Ryan has come a long way and now enjoys the company of humans. He would make a great fit in a family of rabbit lovers. AF 122 Canine Courage For families whose child is afraid of dogs To assist families whose child is afraid of dogs, Animal Friends will provide a meeting space and a child-friendly therapy dog accompanied by the dog’s handler. The family will provide a therapist who will co-teach the sessions with Animal Friends’ Education Coordinator. Parents should contact their child’s pediatrician who may be able to recommend a therapist to work with the family. It will be the family’s financial responsibility to pay the therapist for his/her time. This six week class will develop skills needed for you and your dog to conduct therapy dog visits to a variety of facilities including hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment centers, hospices and more. Dogs should be people and dog friendly and have basic obedience training.
Animal Friends is dedicated to providing people and their companion animals with the tools they need to develop lasting and successful relationships with one another and their community. All training is accomplished through kind, effective positive reinforcement techniques. You will learn how positive reinforcement is a way to build a relationship with your pet. We will build on those skills to develop a visiting team of dog and handler. Focus will be placed on team compatibility to ensure that dog and handler work well together. Companion animals enrich our lives in so many ways. Join others for a candlelight remembrance and celebration ceremony to hear interfaith and spiritual words of comfort and pay tribute to those wonderful animal friends that will be sorely missed. Hundred Acres Manor is now open for its 11th season of scares! Pittsburgh’s premier haunted house is not revered only by those of us residing in the ‘Burgh. In 2013, it was named “Pittsburgh’s Best Haunted House” by Haunt World Magazine and one of America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions by the Travel Channel. With a mix of animatronics and live actors in six attractions spanning a mile, it is often hard to tell what is real and what is not. Just when your focus is drawn to one frightening motion, another jumps out to terrify you even more. Not for the faint-of-heart, this extreme attraction still draws thousands of spectators to Bethel Park each fall. Proceeds benefit Animal Friends and the Homeless Children’s Education Fund. The gruesome and terrifying experience evolves and grows each year, and 2014 brings an all-new interactive attraction to Hundred Acres Manor: Zombie Paintball! Fight back by shooting live actors and upgrade your weapons to defend against live “zombies.” This walkthrough video-gamelike attraction brings you face-to-face with zombies, giving you the chance to be like one of the few brave survivors in a horror movie. Visitors be warned, Travel Channel said, “Don’t let all the goodwill from Hundred Acres Manor fool you. Their top priority is to take you to the edge of sanity then throw you over the edge into an abyss.”

SliNKy Slinky, also known as Slinks, lives in our free roam room with other cats and gets along well with other cats. He really likes people as well. He even enjoys when our volunteers read to him. This special 4-yearold tabby is missing an eye, which gives him a rather unique, distinguished look. And this very slight impediment does not slow him down. He’s a player, a cuddler, a joker, and a lover. Come meet him today!
CaroliNe Sweet Caroline! This loving cutie was found as a stray by a kind soul who couldn’t take care of her. She loves people and loves being the center of attention even more. With that said, she’d probably do best as an only pet. She occasionally stands on her hind legs and begs for a treat. And she loves string toys. Caroline is currently staying in an office with our Chief Operating Officer, helping her make the decisions that make Animal Friends so wonderful. She obviously makes a trusted and loyal companion. BoB Heinz As you can tell by his name, this husky 2-year-old is all Pittsburgh. Whether it’s ketchup or football, his name is synonymous with prestige and our Heinz lives up to the hype. He’s fun, friendly, gorgeous and playful. He gets along with people of all ages and other cats. So come relish in his company. You will surely score a touchdown when you adopt him.
This sleek 3-year-old cat with striking yellow eyes is shy, but you’ll get the biggest cat compliment when he becomes comfortable with you. He’s having a hard time being adopted because he has an auto-immune disorder (FIV). FIV positive cats can live long, healthy lives with proper vet care. MoNGo This petite, 1-year-old sweetie came to us from a hoarding situation - too many cats in an unsanitary and dangerous home. She loves chasing a laser pointer and string toys. She does have a slight neurological disorder that can sometimes make her unsteady on her paws but it doesn’t slow her down a bit. Come say hello to her today! Dakota

When I was asked to write about my buddy Dakota, I fretted for a couple weeks. I was racking my brain to remember when I first met him so I would have a place to start the story. But I find I can’t remember our first introduction! It’s probably because I figured he wouldn’t be at the shelter long. He was a catch! Dakota is affectionate with a manly macho touch. When I opened his kennel he would often lunge towards me with open arms, wrapping his paws over my shoulders and giving me a hefty pat on the back.

He became my muse - someone who inspires my photography and creative drive. I was determined to find him a home. When I’d arrive at work and walk past the cat condos, I’d stop to bid good morning to my furry friend. Sometimes, he’d be curled in a ball still asleep. But many times he would gaze up, recognize me, and rub his head and shoulders against the glass, his white whiskers popping out in the faint light.
At 13, he was more energetic than most kittens. For that reason I would often take him for breaks in my office. I had a small bed next to my computer where he would take the occasional cat nap, but for some reason he found my laptop more comfortable.
A couple weeks ago I got what I wanted - a home for Dakota. He was adopted by a very nice gentleman, a prior adopter of other Animal Friends’ alumni, so I know he’s in good hands. Dakota has been renamed Seamus, which I think is a fitting, regal name for my friend. He’s doing well in his new home and has taken to sitting on his new dad’s desk now.

Dakota (now Seamus) and new dad, Tom. But those feelings fade when I’m greeted by Heinz, the new tenant in Dakota’s condo, who has many of the same charming characteristics as my good pal. So, come on down and meet Heinz before he too burrows a hole into my heart.
