Dear Friend, Spring has sprung at Animal Friends! The campus is bustling with adopters and volunteers taking advantage of the longer days, the dogs are eager to hit our sun-drenched trails and shortly our campus will simply burst into bloom and new spring growth.

When I think of growth, my mind turns to how far we’ve come as an organization. We’re continually adapting and evolving so we can better serve the needs of the pets and the people of our region. Once we were simply a humble matchmaking service for homeless pets but we’ve grown into a full-service companion animal resource community. As part of being an animal resource community, we promise to extend our knowledge mind turns to and resources as much as we can … some of which is done through this very publication.

In the early 1990s, a member of our Board of Directors, Chris O’Donnell, had a vision to create an avenue to promote our adoptable animals. (Lest we forget, Facebook and Instagram weren’t a glimmer of an idea, and Animal Friends didn’t even have a website yet!) And so, the Petsburgh Press – a newsletter chock full of photos and bios of our beloved residents – was founded. For decades this format has served us well. But now, as we continue to evolve and grow as an organization, we wanted to ensure that this important publication evolved with us. So, now you can expect to receive the new Petsburgh Magazine quarterly. It will have expanded articles, featured pets and brand-new sections. All in all, our intention is to provide you with even more resources than before to help you improve, support and save the lives of our animal friends. We’re pleased to carry on the tradition of the Petsburgh Press, but we’re even more thrilled to bring you our flagship edition of our Petsburgh Magazine. I truly hope you enjoy it. In appreciation,

I recently found a young kitten and was wondering about getting her spayed. Is this important and if so, at what age should I have it done?

In terms of when to have your kitten spayed, it is best to have the procedure done before the pet reaches sexual maturity and goes into her first heat cycle. This first heat can happen as young as 5 months of age. Most veterinarians working in private practice prefer to perform the surgery between 5-6 months while veterinarians working in an animal shelter environment or at high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics safely perform the procedure as young as 2 months of age.

Meet the Vet By Carol Whaley, Director of Clinic Services Animal Friends is excited to introduce our new Veterinarian of Community Medicine, Dr. Carol Fellenstein. A graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Fellenstein has extensive experience in shelter medicine and has worked with shelters in the Washington, D.C. area, Norfolk, Va. and throughout the state of Indiana. Dr. Fellenstein also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Shelter Medicine at Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for nearly 5 years, instructing students in shelter medicine, veterinary forensics and animal husbandry as well as implementing the school’s mobile spay/neuter surgical unit which teaches fourth-year veterinary students high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter techniques. Most recently, Dr. Fellenstein served as the Medical Director at a private clinic that provided surgical services to pets of low-income clientele in the Indianapolis area. ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org

A pipe cleaner can twist into a hyacinth or posy, creating a bright, exciting new toy! This flower toy is easy for your cat to toss and has an appealing fuzzy texture. You can also store your flower toys in catnip to put a little extra spring in your cat’s step!

Spring is finally here bringing flowers, warmer days and sunshine with it! Giving our pets something new and fresh to explore each day can improve their quality of life and leave the frosty days of winter behind.

Once the flower has been played with, hide it again! Discovering a new toy peeking from behind a door, next to a chair leg or under a bed skirt can bring out your cat’s instinctive desire to hunt.

Rabbits As a natural forager, your rabbit will enjoy receiving some of their daily hay in a unique sushi roll. Add fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro or dill for a fun surprise! The rolled toy moves, has a unique texture and provides a challenge for your bunny to reach the treat. Simply cut a 2-inch by 6-inch piece of corrugated paper and tightly roll up the herbs or hay in the paper and secure with raffia. Your long-eared family member will thank you!

Dogs Spring weather allows our dogs to really enjoy their walks. Your pup’s strongest sense is smell. With 220-300 million scent receptors in their nose (compared to 6 million in a human) our dogs live in a world of scent.

Take a sniffing walk! Next time you and your pooch are out for a stroll, let them choose the route and allow them to sniff lampposts, mailboxes and street signs as long as they like! For added fun, toss a few treats into the grass for them to sniff out. Sniffing helps to expend energy and engages the mind. Let your dog choose the pace and direction of your next outing – after all, walks should be fun for them!

After nearly 2 years, I think it’s safe to say that I’ve become one of her closest human friends. “I had the privilege of getting to work closely with Hoppy when she first came to Animal Friends from one of our partner shelters. Hoppy was a bit shy at first as she got to know her new environment. Under the watchful eyes of our dedicated volunteers, Hoppy began to open up and let her unique and adventurous personality shine through. GANDALF AND GALADRIEL Gandalf and Galadriel are a bonded pair and will need to find a family with room for two new bunnies! Galadriel tends to be more outgoing than Gandalf – he looks to her for confidence. The two are more comfortable in quiet environments so they would do best in a calm, settled home. BIG WIG Big Wig came to Animal Friends after being rescued by our Humane Society Police Officers. Although she has been through some hard times, Big Wig is an absolute sweetheart. rabbit who takes her time trusting and getting to know new people. Her ideal home will be one with a patient family who will allow her time to open up and adjust. As with most bunnies, she prefers all four feet on the floor, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy human interaction!

Positive Reinforcement By Veronica Rigatti, Canine Behavior Technician Training a canine companion takes time and patience. Sometimes, our four-legged friends struggle to understand what we are asking of them. So, how do we cross this language barrier between pups and people? At Animal Friends, we use positive reinforcement training. The main idea behind positive reinforcement is that praising your dog has much more effective, long-term results than punishing them. But what exactly does positive reinforcement involve? Let’s get into the specifics … If your dog does something good, you should reward their behavior with treats, toys or positive attention. Your dog will want to repeat that behavior again and again so they can continue to be rewarded! Over 16

time, your dog will begin to consistently exhibit the good behaviors that you’re hoping for. Positive reinforcement training makes your dog happy while the good behaviors they are learning will make you happy – everybody wins! This type of training also builds trust between you and your animal companion, which will strengthen the bond you share for years to come. Often times, training a dog isn’t a simple task. You will likely experience bumps in the road, but that’s okay! Struggles and setbacks are all part of the learning process for you and your dog. The most important thing to remember is to be patient and give your dog time to understand what you are trying to teach them. What should you do when your dog demonstrates an undesirable behavior? You can use positive reinforcement in these situations too! For instance, if

your dog barks every time you have a visitor, try teaching them to grab their favorite toy when there’s a knock at the door. They will be distracted by their toy and they won’t be able to bark because their mouth is full! It’s important to recognize that training a dog comes with ups and downs and it is easy to get frustrated. Remember, you want your dog to love and trust you – punishing them instead of using positive reinforcement only teaches them to be afraid of you. This type of training can also be very harmful to a dog’s development and can

cause new issues like fear, anxiety and even aggression. Using force to punish a dog – like hitting, using choke or shock collars or yelling at them – simply teaches them to be afraid to act a certain way. While this may stop the negative behavior, it does not reinforce a positive one. As a result, the dog is likely to develop something known as “learned helplessness” where they will shut down and refuse to do Veronica Rigatti anything because of with Animal Friends alumnus, Mason fear of punishment. The result is a dog who is fearful of their owner and a very

weak bond between the two of them. According to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) …

“

The potential adverse effects [of using punishment] include but are not limited to: inhibition of learning, increased fear-related and aggressive behaviors and injury to animals and people interacting with animals. AVSAB recommends that training should focus on reinforcing desired behaviors, removing the reinforcer for inappropriate behaviors and addressing the emotional state and environmental conditions driving the undesirable behavior. This approach promotes a better understanding of the pet’s behavior and better awareness of how humans may have inadvertently contributed to the development of the undesirable behavior.” Punishment can have a long-lasting impact on a dog and weakens the bond they share with their humans. There are so many reasons we recommend positive reinforcement at Animal Friends. It keeps pets and their people happy, it builds confidence – and it works!

As a progressive leader in the national animal welfare movement, Animal Friends supports humane training methods that are based on an understanding of how animals learn and incorporate kindness and respect for both the animal and the guardian. Humane training does not inflict unnecessary distress or discomfort on the animals. Humane training makes primary use of lures and rewards such as food, praise, petting and play as well as non-aversive training tools and equipment designed to assist guardians in managing behaviors. Thor was brought to us after a Good Samaritan found him living outside and took him to a local veterinarian. This friendly boy is FIV-positive which means that he has a slightly weaker immune system than other cats, but that doesn’t stop him from living a normal life! A Special Gift for Our Cats

The cats who live in our Free Roam Rooms received a special gift from Hannah, a Gold Award candidate. As part of her 80-hour Girl Scout project, Hannah created cat colosseums with the encouragement of our Enrichment Specialist. The cats enjoyed finding hidden treats and gladly jumped and hid inside them. Thank you to Hannah for enriching the stay of our feline residents!

Virtual Field Trips – a new way to visit our animals! Students can enjoy a guided tour of the cats and rabbits, “meet” a special animal guest on the monitor and participate in a Q-and-A session. Our free virtual field trips are a great way to kick off a supply drive or community service project – the students enjoy getting to see the animals who they will be helping! Clark Gable’s Happily Ever After By Nikki Finch, Adoption Coordinator Clark Gable is a handsome Greyhound mix who first came to Animal Friends from a partner organization. Right away, we realized what a silly and playful pup he was! To help him channel his energetic personality in a positive way, our staff and volunteers spent plenty of time taking him for long walks, exercising in our play yards and putting his mind to work with enrichment activities.

Clark Gable and his new sister, Meeka

Despite his fun-loving mentality, Clark Gable was shy and – at times – fearful of new people and situations. Our Adoption Counselors took the time to get to know him and worked hard to find a good match with potential adopters who came to visit our residents. Sadly, after being adopted several times, Clark Gable found his way back to us yet again.

had another dog at home and were interested in meeting Clark Gable. We shared his story and let them know that he may take some time to warm up – they were more than happy to take things at his pace. The family was incredibly kind and patient, coming back to visit time and time again as Clark Gable grew more comfortable and familiar with them.

Although he had a timid nature when meeting people, Clark Gable really came out of his shell when he was in the company of other dogs. So, we knew that a family with another canine member might be just what he needed to settle in and feel comfortable in a new home.

After their third visit, it was time for a meetand-greet with their dog, Meeka. And, it was a match! The family adopted Clark Gable and he was on his way home.

Since welcoming the newest member of their household, Clark Gable’s family has kept in touch with us to share stories of how well he

has adjusted to their home. He and his new canine sister spend their days chasing each other around the yard and exploring the house together. Because of the compassionate and patient approach his new family took during his adoption, Clark Gable seems to have finally found the home he was waiting for. It may have taken a little longer to find them, but we’re thrilled that Clark Gable now has a family he can call his very own!
