ENVIRONMENT
Composting Making the most of leftovers around the yard
TEXT: HQ PHOTOGRAPHY: SHUTTERSTOCK
You can throw all your ‘yard leftovers’ into the compost pile, including rotten apples and carrots, manure and soiled feed
A
s unappealing as the idea is to most, a yard environment is the perfect place to have a compost heap. You can buy a compost heap container at just about any builders’ or gardening outlet. Place your compost heap away from the actual stables, but usually wherever you store old shavings is a good place. Make sure any excess water that seeps down can drain away easily.
6
WHAT CAN I PUT IN? Put the right stuff in. Good things to chuck into the compost heap are fruit and vegetable waste or peels (including apples or carrots that have gone off), teabags,
plant leaves, prunes and grass cuttings. These all provide nitrogen and create moisture. However, try to add scrunched-up old paper, dry leaves, crushed eggshells and old carton boxes (such
as for eggs or takeaway cup holders). They will not rot as quickly, but they do provide carbon in the compost heap and encourage the formation of air pockets. Products to avoid putting into the compost heap are dog or cat faeces (including old litter), baby nappies, diseased plants, or any meat or dairy products. These will lead to pests and rather unpleasant smells. Remember not to put in any plastic, glass or metal
materials – rather recycle these separately. MAINTENANCE Take good care of your compost heap by ‘turning’ it regularly. It’s a smelly job – but we promise you’ll reap the rewards later. Turning your compost will help to aerate and mix the waste, which will then lead to faster composting. Chat to any nursery about suitable worms to add to the compost – they love the dark and moist
environment and they’ll play a vital part in breaking down the compost. You can also add a compost ‘activator’ to help turn the waste into compost in half the time.
If you don’t like the sight of a compost pile, you can opt for a compost bin
WHEN IS IT READY TO SPREAD? You’ll know that your compost is ready when you have a dark brown soil-like layer with a spongy texture at the bottom of the container. Spread the compost onto resting paddocks, flower beds, bushes, shrubs or any other vegetation around the yard.

tips to attract butterflies TEXT: KRISZTI BOTTYAN PHOTOGRAPHY: SHUTTERSTOCK
Simple and effective ways to attract butterflies to your garden Flat-topped flowers give the butterflies ideal landing spots
G
ardening and landscaping can and should be an enjoyable experience. What is even more enjoyable is standing back after all of the hard work and marvelling at your creation. The joys include seeing your children running through the garden, hearing the birds chirping above in the trees and now, with these tips, magical butterflies flitting about. 1 LIMIT THE USE OF PESTICIDES It’s tricky to just eliminate all pest control, but there are specific pesticides that are designed to control and eliminate all insect populations, which include butterflies. Opt for natural garden insect control: this will ensure not only a thriving garden but also a healthy one.
8
2 CHOOSE NATIVE PLANTS Native (local) plants work with native animals including butterflies because they evolve together in your garden. Butterflies rely on specific native plants during different parts of their life cycle. This is also true for the type of grass you choose.
3 CHOOSE FLOWERING PLANTS WITH BRIGHT COLOURS AND FLAT TOPS Butterflies are attracted to colourful flowers. In particular, they are strongly attracted to flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink and purple. The shape of the flower also plays a large role in how attractive it is to the butterfly. Plants that create clusters of flat-topped flowers give the butterflies ideal landing spots. 4 CREATE BUTTERFLY SPAS Butterflies like to stay hydrated and venture around in puddles of water. Create an area in your garden, preferably a sunny one, which has fresh water for the butterflies. Butterflies also enjoy resting in mud puddles because that way they can rehydrate and mineralise. 5 CHOOSE PLANTS WITH NECTAR SOURCES Eating nectar is one of the two main goals in life that the butterfly has. The other goal is reproducing. Make sure that you choose plants that are good nectar sources. Try bordering your lawn with nectar-rich flowers such as daisies and flowers from the pea family.

The great indoors 5 indigenous indoor plants
1
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
The ‘zama zama’ is a very popular short plant with glossy foliage. It is loved for its dark green, fleshy leaves and tolerance of low light levels. It is a slow-growing species and is excellent for use in dark areas as well as for placement in areas that have height restrictions. This indoor plant thrives with medium to low light, low water and warm temperatures.
2
Dracaena deremensis (‘lemon-andlime’)
10
Requiring high levels of light, this plant flourishes indoors where direct sunlight is abundant. The lemon-and-lime is a character plant that makes a bold statement with its colour and shape. The leaves are distinctive: bright green with lime, yellow and white stripes down the edges. It’s a slowgrowing species that is grown in two forms, namely bush and cane. This plant grows best with direct sunlight, low water and warm temperatures.

3
Dracaena fragrans (‘rikki’) Also known as the 'rikki' plant, and a hybrid of Dracaena fragrans, this plant finds its roots in the tropical areas of the African continent. This character plant requires a balanced light source and does not benefit from direct sunlight, and in instances of low light conditions, the variegated foliage will not retain colouring and contrast. This African indoor plant has short leaves arranged in a loose rosette with green and lime-yellow stripes. The rikki plant is a slow-growing species that is available in cane form. This plant grows best with medium light, low water and warm temperatures.
4
Sansevieria trifasciata
This indigenous plant originates from semi-desert parts of South Africa and the African continent. Also known as ‘mother-in-law’s tongue’, this indoor plant is best suited to areas where shade is
available, as it does not require much light. It is an upright, spiky-looking short plant that suits minimalistic interiors. Its leaves are long, leathery, sword-shaped, slightly spiralled and have attractive marbled patterns. The plant removes toxins (such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene) from the air and is used for alleviating sick building syndrome. In Korea, the Sansevieria plant is commonly presented
as a gift during opening business ceremonies or other auspicious events.
5
Areca lutescens
With origins in Madagascar, this palm plant is native to the African continent. Also referred to as the ‘bamboo palm’, this indoor plant thrives in areas where direct sunlight is available. With the most
The art of beauty
tropical look of all palms, it is a busy-looking indoor plant with reed-like stems adding style and elegance to any interior. The bamboo palm filters xylene and toluene from the air. Another benefit of this African indoor plant is that a 1.8m plant, for example, can transpire 1ℓ of water every 24 hours, thereby making it an effective humidifier. This plant needs lots of light, sufficient water and warm temperatures to thrive.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup low sodium soy sauce • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1⁄3 cup brown sugar • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or more if you want it to be spicy) • 3 large cloves of garlic, minced or pressed • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 1 can pineapple rings (keep ½ cup of the juice for the marinade) • 1 package pork chops • 2 tablespoons corn starch • Chopped spring onion METHOD 1. Whisk the low sodium soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, ground ginger, red pepper flakes, garlic, ketchup and pineapple juice until it is all well combined. 2. Pour the marinade over the boneless pork chops and let them sit for at least 10 minutes or overnight. 3. Spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray and heat it to medium-high. 4. Place the meat and pineapple rings on the grill and reserve the marinade to make the sauce. Grill them for four to five minutes on each side. 5. Once the internal temperature reaches 63°C (or longer if you want them well done), remove them from the grill and rest them for 10 minutes. 6. While your meat rests, whisk the corn starch into the marinade and strain it into a saucepan. Heat over medium heat until it starts bubbling, then reduce it to low heat for a couple of minutes to thicken the sauce. 7. Drizzle your meat and pineapple with sauce, sprinkle with chopped spring onion and enjoy!

PET’S CORNER
Taking allergies seriously this spring
TEXT: MIENTJIE KLEINHANS PHOTOGRAPHY: SHUTTERSTOCK
They’re just as irritating to pets as they are to people Constant scratching can lead to infections if not treated
ALLERGY SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: • Itchy and runny eyes • Itchy ears • Ear infections • Sneezing • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin • Increased scratching • Itchy back or base of tail • Paw chewing or swollen paws • Constant licking
18
W
e all know, at some point in our lives, what it feels like to have an allergy. With symptoms ranging from a runny nose to itchy eyes or even a rash, it is an irritating feeling that makes us miserable. So why would we want to put our beloved pets through similar discomfort if we can prevent it? Allergies can be caused by fleas and a myriad of environmental allergens, such as pollen, moulds and dust mites. Some of these are very prevalent in spring and summer. Allergies are common in both cats and dogs. In most cases, there is not much that we can do about the allergens, but we can get rid of parasites, such as fleas, to an extent. Dr Guy Fyvie, veterinary advisor to Hill’s Pet Nutrition South Africa, says that allergy symptoms often show on the skin. “Areas around the feet, face, ears, armpits or groin are most commonly affected. You may also see hair loss, crusting or scaling.” It is no wonder then that
affected pets constantly scratch, lick, itch and flap their ears. Continuous scratching, biting and excessive grooming due to itching often damage the skin. This allows allergens to penetrate the skin more easily, causing secondary skin infections, like the dreaded hotspots. Irritated skin is not the only discomfort your pet may experience: you may even notice an unpleasant smell or inflamed ears. “If your dog or cat shows any allergy signs, consult your veterinarian to avoid more serious complications, discomfort and stress,” says Dr Fyvie. BLOOD TEST When you suspect that your pet has an allergy, ask your veterinarian to do a simple blood test. This test can alert you to both environmental and food allergies your pet may have. Once you have the results, make a copy and keep it in your purse or wallet. If your pet has a variety of allergies, it is best to have the list on hand whenever you go shopping for pet food.
Sneezing is one of the symptoms if your cat or dog has an allergy to something
RELIEVING ALLERGIES It is not possible to cure allergies, but it is possible to manage them, according to Dr Darren Berger, DVM DACVD, assistant professor, Lloyd Veterinary Medical
Centre, Iowa State University. He adds that washing bedding and changing beds regularly will help with dust mite allergies. Eliminating parasites and meticulous flea control are essential in
managing your pet’s allergies. Dr Berger advises that although bathing removes allergens from the coat and soothes and hydrates the skin, don’t over-bathe dogs. Wiping the dog or cat with a damp cloth or allergy-relief wipe will remove allergens from the coat. Ask your vet about overthe-counter or prescription antihistamines to help with any triggers you can’t eliminate. FOOD ALLERGIES Many large pet food brands have come up with special allergy formulas, such as Hill’s nutrition-formulated food, to reduce signs of environmental
allergies by disrupting the internal allergy response. In a case where the allergy is caused by food, it is a little easier to manage. It will mean that you have to read the labels of pet food and treats. If your dog is allergic to grains, take a look at canned dog food, where you’re more likely to find 100% meat formulas or meat and veggie mixtures that your dog can tolerate. Where possible, make your pet’s treats yourself. For instance, for dogs allergic to grains, some all-meat canned dog food can be sliced and baked in the oven for crispy homemade dog cookies.

The DIY yard

Easy fixes, stable hacks and self-made projects
A
nyone who runs a yard – be it small or large – knows that keeping horses is no easy task. Things break and get lost on a daily basis, and horses find a way of getting themselves into trouble at the most inconvenient of times. It’s always handy as a horse owner to have a few tricks up your sleeve when needing a quick fix or a yard hack – and this month we bring you exactly that. BROKEN STABLE DOOR? Easy fix: Secure the stable for the night with a cable tie or carabiner clip. Try not to tie the door closed with string, because it is possible for the string to come loose or snap in the middle of the night. Keep a pair of soft-edge scissors in the horse’s grooming bag or box outside his stable, so that you can quickly cut the cable tie if there’s an emergency. TIRED OF PICKING THE HOSEPIPE UP OFF THE GROUND?
22
Easy fix: Fix a carabiner clip to the wall closest to the hosepipe source at a comfortable height. You can then place the hosepipe nozzle in the smaller loop of the carabiner clip to make for convenient access when hosing down horses. You can also use an old horseshoe to hold the nozzle, or fix three horseshoes on the wall to store the entire hosepipe. PEST PROBLEM?
Easy fix: If your current feed bins have small cracks or have an open top, it may be time to buy new storage bins for your feed. A secure bin with a lid that can be closed tightly is ideal for keeping mice and rats at bay. Keep the general feed area tidy and swept at all times to deter pests. Invest in some stable cats who will naturally hunt mice and rats and help keep pests under control. Avoid pesticides as they can contaminate your feed and consequently pose a danger to horses if ingested.
DIY FEED SCOOPS? Easy fix: Milk bottles are probably the be-all and end-all of arts and crafts. Make your own cheap food scoops by cutting the bottom end at a diagonal and leaving the lid and handle intact. NEED EASY STORAGE FOR BOOTS? Easy fix: Install a ‘Velcro wall’ in your tack room. You can buy the Velcro material from a building outlet or megastore. Grooms and riders can then easily stick boots after riding, and easily remove them before tacking up as well. Make sure that all the boots are labelled with the horses’ names. Old buckets also make for easy storage of and access to working boots. Mark the buckets with the horses’ names and keep all their work boots, show boots and bandages together in the buckets. MUDDY PATCHES IN THE PADDOCK? Easy fix: Use old bedding
to cover any wet or muddy patches in the paddock, especially by the gates and water points. You can also use old bedding to line the paths to the paddocks to reduce mud and dust. NEED TO KEEP SOCKS CLEAN BEFORE A SHOW? Easy fix: Cut the toes off some old socks and pull them over your horse’s legs to keep socks or stockings clean while boxing or standing at the show. DIRTY HORSE? Easy fix: If your horse has just come in from the paddock and evidently enjoyed a dust bath, scoop up a handful of shavings and rub them all over him. You’ll be surprised how much dirt comes off! NEED A QUICK CLEAN?
Easy fix: Baby wipes are your new best friend. Leave them in your box to give your horse’s nostrils or eyes a quick wipe, or to wipe down muddy boots after a ride. You can also use them on yourself to wipe your face, arms and hands before you leave the yard. TREES THAT NEED TO COME DOWN? Easy fix: You may need to remove a tree for any number of reasons, but don’t waste it! Cut the tree to make rustic seating around the yard, or
send the tree to be processed for wood shavings. You can also use the tree for large trotting poles, cross country jumps or jump fillers. DIY JUMPS? Easy fix: Jumps and fillers are certainly not inexpensive,
but luckily there are some easy DIY options you can try if you’re not afraid of some manual labour. Fill old feed or shaving bags with sand and use them as fillers. Feed bags usually have some colourful branding on them, so they make for something a little spookier. Approach a construction company and ask them if they have any spare cones or plastic yellow barriers that they wouldn’t mind getting rid of. Approach any panel beater or scrap yard and see if you
can get your hands on some old tyres that can be spraypainted for colour. Plastic barrels or water containers can also make for jump fillers. Buy some pot plants from your local nursery to use as fillers or wings. You can easily make a water tray with pool noodles and a plastic sheet. Use old blankets or tablecloths as fillers by draping them over the poles. Lastly, stock up on some colourful duct tape that you can wrap around old poles to add a touch of colour.
BODY
Health hacks 7 easy tips to take care of your body
TEXT: CHARLOTTE BASTIAANSE PHOTOGRAPHY: SHUTTERSTOCK
1. MOOD BOOST Smell the peel of an orange for a natural mood booster. Research has shown that orange essential oil helps to improve bad moods and increase alertness. If you don’t keep oranges in your home, you can buy orange essential oil at your local pharmacy; dab some of the oil on your wrists or massage into your temples.
24
2. PEACEFUL SLEEP If you struggle to fall asleep or if you wake up at night, dab some lavender essential oil on a tissue and put it inside your pillow case before you sleep. The aromatherapy will soothe your sleep.
3. MOVE YOUR FEET When parking at a shopping centre or at work, park your car far away from the entrance so that you have a longer walk. This is a great way to increase your daily step count, get your blood flowing, and catch some fresh air. 4. DRINK HERBAL TEA There are loads of herbal teas on the market, and they are readily available in shopping centres around the country. Green tea is a popular favourite as it’s a great energy booster that can replace coffee. Chamomile helps those who struggle to sleep, and peppermint tea helps
to improve digestion and settle unhappy tummies. 5. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR POSTURE If you spend a lot of your day sitting due to school or work, try to be conscious of your posture. All too often we fall into the habit of slouching or slumping in our chairs and it can create longterm back or neck pain. Try placing something behind the
small of your back, such as a firm cushion or rolled towel, to support your lower back. If you work on a computer or laptop, make sure it’s elevated to a point where you can look at the screen straight-on instead of looking down. Exercise your core on a regular basis to improve stability. 6. MEAL PLANNING Try to plan your meals and
snacks on a Sunday for the week ahead. Having meals ready will prevent you from indulging in fast food or unhealthy snacks. You’ll be saving yourself time and energy as well. 7. 3. Allow to firm for 15 to 20 minutes.
• Watermelon fragrance oil • Poppy seeds DARK GREEN LAYER 1. Cut 230g of the goat’s milk soap into cubes. 2. Place the cubes into a measuring cup, and melt in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring well after each 30 seconds. 3. When the soap is completely melted, add 10 drops of watermelon fragrance oil and green soap
colourant. 4. Pour ¾ of the green soap into the bottom of the soap mould. 5. Allow to firm for 15 to 20 minutes. LIGHT GREEN LAYER 1. Take the remaining dark green soap and add 120g of white soap cubes. 2. Melt in the microwave, stir until fully mixed (will be a light green colour), and pour into the soap mould.
WHITE LAYER 1. Melt 120g of white soap cubes in the microwave. 2. Add 5 drops of watermelon fragrance oil, and pour into the soap mould. 3. Allow to firm for 15 to 20 minutes. RED/PINK LAYER 1. Cut 1.5kg of clear soap base into cubes. 2. Microwave until fully melted, then stir in 15 drops of watermelon fragrance oil, the red colourant and 1 tablespoon of poppy seeds. 3. Pour into the soap mould and sprinkle a few more poppy seeds on top. 4. Allow to firm for 90
minutes or until the soap has completely hardened (time will depend on the temperature and humidity). ALL TOGETHER NOW 1. Carefully remove the silicone liner from the wooden mould, and then remove the soap from the silicone. 2. This loaf mould makes a large batch of soap, so you can expect to get around 12 to 15 bars of soap from each batch. 3. Use a sharp knife to slice the soap into bars. 4. You can leave the rectangular soap as is, or you can cut the corners as shown to create cute little triangle-shaped watermelonslice soaps!
