In 2024, ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival will be back as a cultural institution for the 17th time! This year, artists and works from Africa will be honoured, highlighting their cultural relationship with animation and giving the participants and the audience, who faithfully follow the Festival the opportunity to "wander" through the African continent through three particularly interesting pillars.
The artistic programme, the Agora and the animation media literacy workshops are the best way to accompany this unique animation experience. We look forward to it every year in Syros!
On the very first day of the festival, the European Animation Emiles Awards Ceremony will take place, while during the whole festival there will be seven competition screening programmes. The rich programme of ANIMASYROS also includes a tribute to Slovakia, which further broadens the interest and highlights the European dimension of audiovisual creation.
My best wishes for a succesful edition to the organisers and the festival team!
Dr. Lina Mendoni Minister of Culture
It is with great pleasure that I welcome the 17th ANIMASYROS 2024 International Animation Festival. It is the event that was launched in 2008 in the capital of Cyclades and that has become, as it should be every year, one of the leading European celebrations of animation, animated films and their artistic applications.
This year's edition demonstrates the Festival's reputation and its consolidation as an international benchmark for the sector. It is more multidimensional than ever. With its seven competition sections, specialized tributes, educational workshops, regional activities and a dense network of new national and international collaborations, it promises to be an extremely rich event, not only an irreplaceable meeting place for enthusiasts and professionals of the genre, but also one that is constantly attracting a wider audience, introducing them to the extremely interesting and demanding art of animation.
The thematic core of ΑΝΙΜΑSYROS 2024, entitled "Africa: an animated continent", runs through the festival's programme and highlights the largely unknown thematic and cultural relationship between the African continent and the global animation production. We tend to think of Africa as an exotic and untouched place. There is an irresistible fascination and attraction to discovering this place. ΑΝΙΜΑSYROS 2024 will reintroduce it to us as the place of origin of important creators and bring us into contact with their works. In addition to the presentation of films or works with an African theme, it will reveal the place and its people, contributing to the broadening of our knowledge of other countries and their people, to the breaking down of stereotypes and ultimately to mutual understanding. All this through the ideal medium of animation, which is a universal language shared by young and old people alike.
ANIMASYROS 2024 is faithful to the solid tradition it has created, which is also renewed and it is structured around three pillars. The artistic programme itself, with animated films shown in seven competitive sections, the aforementioned Thematic Tribute and tributes to the international animation scene and its esteemed representatives. The Agora, which brings together and networks artists and professionals of the genre, and also highlights the financial aspect of this art and the need to support it. Finally, animation media literacy workshops are organised for a wide range of audience, such as children and teenagers, people with disabilities and seniors. A new feature is the European Animation Emiles Awards ceremony, which will take place on the first day of the festival.
The extensive and original tributes, as well as the artistic and educational programmes, confirm the radiance and justify the impact of ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival. Syros is gradually regaining its rightful title: that of the fertile and restless cultural centre of contemporary Greece, in a field of creativity that appeals to a worldwide audience of all ages. The island's reborn extroversion is reflected in the professionalism and youthful spirit of the festival's participants and collaborators. I take the success of the festival for granted and look forward to many more Festivals to come.
Sofia Zacharaki Minister of Social Cohesion and Family
It is with great pleasure that I welcome the 17th Edition of ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival 2024.
Since its inception in 2008 in the heart of Cyclades, ANIMASYROS has become a significant institution, establishing Syros as a global meeting point and a hub of artistic exchange.
This year, the Festival’s central theme is dedicated to Africa, exploring the rich and ever-evolving animation scene of the continent. At the same time, the festival’s diverse program will feature artistic works by Greek filmmakers as well as tributes to Central Europe and Mexico.
Recognising that artistic expression is a universal concern, ANIMASYROS continues its media literacy workshops for yet another year, offering opportunities to children, teenagers, young professionals, people with disabilities and seniors to collaborate and create.
Having the Aegean colors as our background, we, once again, let the Festival take us to imaginary worlds, to other continents and to challenge, teach and ultimately remind us of the immediate expressive potential of artistic innovation.

Vice Governor of Cyclades

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the prestigious ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival to Hermoupolis for the seventeenth year.
This great celebration of animation opens its doors to welcome us into its spectacular world.
It is an internationally renowned institution that every year gives the artists of moving image the opportunity to communicate with the audience in a way that has made a breakthrough in national and international artistic events, and at the same time, it is an opportunity for animation fans to enjoy quality films, new productions and special tributes.
ANIMASYROS 2024 is dedicated to Africa and explores the cultural relationship of this continent with the global animation community, once again contributing to the arts and culture in its own unique way.
I would like to congratulate the organisers for this year's unique programme of events, which, in addition to the rest of the festival's activities, will include the European Animation Emile Awards for the first time.
Once again, the Region of South Aegean actively supports the International Animation Festival, recognising its brilliant course and the great contribution of this prestigious institution in Greece and Europe.

ANIMASYROS 2024, International Animation Festival, opens its doors in September in the Cycladic capital, our beloved Syros.
Seventeen years of creative course, artistic searching and wonderful wandering in the magical and special world of animated films.
With seven competition sections, special tributes, educational workshops for the whole family, children, teenagers, young professionals, people with disabilities and senior citizens, a rich programme of parallel activities, new international and national collaborations, this year is sure to leave the best impressions.
In particular, the Agora, one of the most dynamic parts of the Festival, which has become a reference point for the industry in the Eastern Mediterranean, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with the launch of a new strategic partnership with Annecy International Animation Festival, the largest animation festival in the world. This will take place as part of the Pitching Forum and with the support of the French Institute in Greece.
This year's ANIMASYROS theme is of great interest as it is dedicated to Africa under the title "Africa: An animated continent" to highlight contemporary African animation, creation and production.
We look forward to seeing you all at ANIMASYROS 2024, which is sure to surprise us once again!
We would like to thank PLATFORMA-Urban Culture Co, the Region of South Aegean, the participating artists and all those involved in the organisation of this unique event.
Good luck ANIMASYROS!
Alexandros Athanasiou Mayor of Syros - Hermoupolis
Giannis Roussos President of the Cyclades Chamber of Commerce
We are particularly pleased that one of the most important international animation festivals, ANIMASYROS, is once again being organized in Syros, contributing over the years to the promotion of the island to a very wide audience in Greece and abroad.
The Cyclades Chamber of Commerce, a firm supporter of actions that enhance the promotion and development of the island, is honored to be this year's co-organizer of ANIMASYROS 2024, recognizing its importance and role in supporting the local economy and the cultural identity of the island. In this context, the Cyclades Chamber of Commerce provides its conference hall in Syros, fully equipped with high-end technology equipment, for the needs of the festival's screenings.
Furthermore, in a joint initiative with ANIMASYROS, it will, for the first time, make available its halls in Andros, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini and Tinos, so that the magic of the moving image can reach as many residents and visitors of the Cyclades as possible.
Congratulations to the organizers and all the volunteers for this great effort. Good luck with the special and unique programme of this year's event.
Andreas Fiorentinos
Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT)
Undoubtedly, from 2008 until today, ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival stands out for its dynamics, the innovative ideas of the organizers, its sustainable philosophy and its substantial contribution to the promotion of Syros, the Cyclades and all of Greece, internationally.
It is aimed at a vast audience and offers, through high-quality animation films by renowned artists, “food for thought” on all the important social issues recorded in contemporary society.
The philosophy of ANIMASYROS is anthropocentric and perfectly aligned with the specific guidelines of the National Strategic Plan for Tourism, emphasizing on the qualitative development of Greek tourism, in terms of sustainability.
The Greek National Tourism Organization supports and cooperates with the ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, recognizing its quality and its exceptional personality.
From the position of the General Secretary of the GNTO-EOT, I would like to wish the organizers good luck for this year's event!
Manolis Koutoulakis
Secretary General for the Aegean and Islands Policy
It is with great pleasure that I welcome ANIMASYROS 2024, a festival that has become a symbol of contemporary artistic creation and innovation in the field of animation. ANIMASYROS is not only a meeting point for artists and creators from all over the world. It is also a platform that promotes culture and artistic expression in the island regions of our country.
Syros, with its historical and cultural vitality, is the ideal place for this important festival. The Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, recognising the importance of cultural development in our islands, is proud to support ANIMASYROS 2024. Supporting cultural activities on the islands is a priority for us. It contributes to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of our islands, while inspiring new generations of artists.
I wish all participants and visitors a truly unique experience filled with creativity and imagination.
The University of the Aegean has been a supporter of the educational activities of ANIMASYROS since its first edition in 2008, and in recent years the festival has become a valuable partner in the design of educational and development programmes in collaboration with the University of the Aegean.
This year University of the Aegean’s Future Lab of Syros, housed together with the Library Annex in the historic Kornilakis building, donated by the Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis and the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis, is the focal point of the Researchers' Night. There, it will present the research project Imagine MoCap, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, on the design of media characters, an initiative of the Interactive Systems Design Laboratory of the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering (PDSD), in collaboration with the Ionian University and the University of the Peloponnese.
Directors and members of the ASIFA HELLAS will use motion capture techniques to bring animated characters to life in front of the audience.
Collaboration with the Onassis Foundation is presented for postgraduate studies in media production design and development, but also for the organization of summer schools of art and technology and incubators for animation professionals, always in collaboration with ANIMASYROS and ASIFA HELLAS, but also with leading partners from the global university map, such as NYU, ENSAD, the Sorbonne School of Arts and the Athens University of Economics and Business, which are among the first to support this initiative.
Finally, the Kornilakis building will host works by first-year students on the theme of Africa and animation. This is the central theme of this year's ANIMASYROS.
The contribution of ANIMASYROS to the development of international cooperation should also be highlighted. This year's examples are the increased cooperation with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market and the revival of the European Animation Emiles Awards, which aim to be the equivalent of the Oscars for European animation. Good luck with the festival and best of strength for continued creativity.

For another year, we embark on a beautiful journey into the world of animation, in a festival platform for dialogue and creativity. Inspired this time by Africa, "an animated continent", we embrace the common values that unite us and celebrate the art that brings us together.
Guided by the pillars of European culture, equality, democracy and solidarity, we broaden our horizons through the work of creators, producers and artists from European and African countries.
In these times of recurring crises, cooperation between nations, embracing multiculturalism, respecting all cultures, and safeguarding cultural heritage are more important than ever.
This year's ANIMASYROS reminds us of the power of art to unite and inspire. The stories and works in the festival's rich, international programme represent the voices of a continent full of vibrancy and diversity, inviting us to discover new ways of thinking and expressing ourselves through shared cultural experiences.
As a continent founded on the principles of democracy, Europe respects human rights and cultural diversity, supports and promotes artistic expression and mutual understanding between nations. Through initiatives such as ANIMASYROS festival, we strengthen our links with other continents. We promote artistic creation as a means of dialogue and cooperation.
Animated art, with its power to transcend borders and languages, reflects and spreads European values, strengthens our shared identity, and promotes a more just and peaceful world.
On behalf of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Greece, I extend my best wishes for the success of the Festival and thank all the participants for their outstanding work. May you all enjoy a creative, inspiring, and memorable festival.

ERT, loyal to its commitment to the most important cultural events in our country, is once again supporting the 17th edition of ANIMASYROS, contributing both to the strengthening of the position of Greek animation production in the international environment and to the promotion of Greek artists to the general public.
ERT's support for animation artists and the promotion of their work is one of the main objectives of public television. As part of the development of cutting edge programming, ERT is steadily integrating animation into its range. This is being done through the ERTFLIX platform and the new ERT Kids channel.
Furthermore, this year ERT is expanding its partnership with ANIMASYROS. In addition to providing communication support through its channels from the festival's opening day, ERT will also be awarding three prizes — in the Greek Competition, the Student Competition, and the Agora Pitching Forum — each accompanied by cash awards.
We will continue to stand by the animation community and the trailblazers of ANIMASYROS, and we wish this year's edition great success.

It’s incredible to think that 16 years have passed since we launched ANIMASYROS. Despite the successes, changes, and challenges along the way, we believe the Festival has successfully established itself as a key reference point for animated film in both Greece and Europe.
This year, we are celebrating the African continent with a broad thematic tribute, showcasing a unique world of animation that we are eager to explore further. From neighboring Egypt to distant Uganda and South Africa, animation, culture, artists, and communities from Africa are coming to Syros to captivate us.
ANIMASYROS and Greece welcome for the first time the European Animation Awards, the Emile Awards, named after the pioneering European artists Émile Reynaud and Émile Cohle.
Cohle.
We are proud to present, in collaboration with the French Institute of Paris and the renowned Annecy International Festival & Market, a longstanding Franco-Greek partnership aimed at advancing animation in the Mediterranean region.
We invite you to enjoy this festival week in any way and as much as you wish. Your personal experience on Syros, the island of animation, will once again be a valuable part of this year's ANIMASYROS!
Τhe mascot
AnimaSpiros 2024: The Cycladic figure, known for its distinctive intellectual glasses, takes on an African flair this year, donning a traditional mask to introduce us to the vibrant and colorful animation of this remarkable continent.
But this isn't the first time it has taken on different characters...
Over the years, we’ve dressed him in ancient Greek columns and draped him with ivy for an animaGreen festival. He became a groom at the famous Syros Carnival, wore a COVID mask, and even donned a red fez to stand alongside the Greek fighters of 1821. Two years ago, we knighted him as a noble ambassador of solidarity for war-torn Ukraine.
Well what about a throwback to 2008 and see how we came up with AnimaSpiros. Αnimasyros festival consists of the words “anima” (from “animation”) and “Syros”, the capital of Cyclades, who has embraced the festival from the beginning, 16 years ago. When character designer Petros Christoulias (who also created this year’s African version) sought inspiration for the festival's mascot, he journeyed back to the 3rd millennium BC, to the Aegean islands, and naturally found himself drawn to the iconic Cycladic figurine. The concept was based on this globally recognized figure, but since its face only has one feature — the nose — Christoulias added a big, quirky pair of glasses to give it "vision." This transformed the triangular head into something reminiscent of a caricature of Woody Allen, whose face has been sketched countless times and has become an archetype for the director. By giving it two simple legs, our character evolved into a symbol.
It was named “AnimaSpiros” by combining the words “animation” and -the Greek male name- “Spiros” (also an alliteration with the word Syros). Godfathers were a group of festival volunteers, students of the University of Corfu, an island literally full of men named “Spiros” after the St. Spiridon.
AnimaSpiros was developed in 3D by Konstantinos Petrou, so that he could reach the port of Syros and start filming the colorful Hermoupolis!

When Zeyelo eyewear introduced its renowned wooden sunglasses and eyeglasses from Syros to the market, collaborating with Eleni Vakondiou became the obvious choice. Now, for the fourth consecutive year, her "Eleni Vakondiou Design Lab" proudly puts its signature on the ANIMASYROS, also creating the European Animation Emile Awards.
Crafted from 100% vegan materials, Vakondiou’s creations— ranging from exquisite jewelry to the festival's awards—are made using spent coffee grounds collected from select Syros' cafes and leftover wood from Zeyelo's eyewear frames, an idea born from Eleni Vakondiou and Pericles Therrios.
As Vakondiou explains, "In the future, we plan to expand beyond jewelry to include practical and decorative objects made from reclaimed wood from old boats and wine barrels. Our goal is to create raw materials from so-called waste, giving them new life and promoting Greek design."
Eleni emphasizes the urgency of sustainability, seeing it as the only viable path forward. Her approach ensures that no material goes to waste, even using the wood dust from production to help aerate Syros' notoriously tough soil. "The planet has warned us repeatedly," she says, highlighting the importance of environmental empathy, which is now embodied in our very own festival awards.

Teatro della
Syros - Hermoupolis - Apollon Theatre
Ηermoupolis, named after Hermes, the ancient God of commerce, is the capital of Syros island and the best-preserved neoclassical city in Greece. With a population of 13.000 people, it is the largest dwelling of Cyclades. Syros is inhabited from the Neolithic era and played an important role in the development of the pre-historic Cycladic civilisation, 3.000 B.C. In the 13th century A.D., the Venetians built the island’s medieval city, Ano Syros, while the island was populated by Catholics. The medieval settlement inside the castle, on the left hill above Hermoupolis protected the inhabitants when Syros was hit by piracy.
Its whitewashed walls with the colorful bougainvilleas and the typical Cycladic architecture make up the ultimate island image of the Aegean, with the Catholic church of San Giorgio, built in 1834, dominating the top of the hill. The opposite hill is crowned by the Orthodox church of the Resurrection, built in 1909 and at its feet unfolds Vrontados, the folksy neighborhood with its countless marble steps leading down to Vaporia, the most majestic area of Hermoupolis, which was filled with impressive neoclassical villas by the rich refugees from Mikra Asia (Asia Minor).
The Apollon Theatre, constructed between 1862 and 1864 by Italian architect Pietro Sampo, became a symbol of Hermoupolis’ economic and cultural flourishing in the mid-19th century. This remarkable building incorporates elements from at least four Italian architectural styles, including the Teatro alla Scala (1776) in Milan, Teatro San Carlo (1816) in Naples, Teatro Academico (1745) in Castelfranco, and Teatro della Pergola (1755) in Florence. The first performance at the Theatre was Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. You can explore the iconic theatre digitally through the HERMes platform (www.3dheritage.gr), which features an exact 3D replica of the Apollon Theatre, created by students of the “Digital Cultural Heritage” course in the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering at the University of the Aegean, under the supervision of Dr. Pavlos Hatzigrigoriou.

| Direction: Isabel Herguera
| Screenplay: Isabel Herguera, Gianmarco Serra /
Based on the science fiction story “Sultana’ s Dream” by Rokeya Hossain
Inspired by a feminist science fiction story written in 1905 in Bengal, Inés, an artist fron San Sebastián embarks on a journey through India searching for the traces of Ladyland, an utopian country for women.
Like the creator herself, Inés is an animation director in search of inspiration when she suddenly stumbles upon “Sultana's Dream” in a bookshop in India. Fascinated by her discovery of this transgressive tale, Inés embarks on a journey across the country to learn more about Hossain and the place of women in the world of yesterday and today.
Isabel Herguera’s Sultana’s Dream, a co-production of Spain and Germany, awarded in some of the most important festivals in the world and opens the curtain of this year's Animasyros (2024). The screening will take place in the presence of the film director and scriptwriter.

A woman who is escaping an abusive situation stumbles and finds herself eye to eye with a hen who is in the same situation. Even though they are separated by a fence as well as by species, they develop a mutual understanding based on the outward shared symptoms of their pain: sore skin. In the moment of their connection we see flashbacks to the origin of their pain. As the woman smokes a cigarette to calm her nerves, she and the chicken come up with a plan: to set the world on fire to match their burning skin. The fire may be imaginary but nevertheless it soothes and provides catharsis. Σκηνοθεσία | Direction,

In the sea, a man swims. As he does, memories come to the surface. From his early childhood to his life as a man, all his memories are linked to water. Some are happy, some glorious, some traumatic. This story will be that of his last swim. It will take us from the source to the river - from the waters of childhood pools to those of swimming pools - from a North African country to the shores of the Mediterranean - from Olympic stadiums to water retention basins - from concentration camp to the dream beaches of Reunion.
With the sea and the urban Algarve as a background, we follow a complete cycle of the life of a special shellfish called PERCEBES, goose barnacle. From their formation, to the dish, in this journey, we cross different contexts that allow us to better understand this region and those who live there.

Cinematherapy is defined as the use of films to motivate and recognize emotions or to draw conclusions in the context of the psychotherapeutic process. Cinematherapy is associated with the ancient art of storytelling as an educational tool. Can be used to encourage the audience to understand almost any subject matter, as cinema covers an extremely wide range of subjects.
The use of cinema as a tool in the provision of prevention and treatment has increased significantly in recent years. Cinematherapy through entertainment offers a wide range of communication possibilities mainly because it helps the viewer to manage the nature of his stress, helping to normalize the experience in conditions of generalized crisis.

Yuck. Couples kissing on the mouth are gross. And the worst is, you can't miss them: when people are about to kiss, their lips become all pink and shiny. Little Léo laughs at them, just like all the kids at the summer camp. But he has a secret he won't tell his friends: his own mouth has actually begun glistening. And, in reality, Léo desperately wants to give kissing a try.

Southern Mosaic
Yael Nudelman | Project Curator
This program consists of films from different years, made with various techniques and by filmmakers of different ages, genders, and backgrounds, all dealing with the unique landscapes of the south of Israel. This area contains deserts, sands, flowers, and wildlife, combined with cities, villages, and people from all walks of life. It is considered to be "far" (in local terms) from the center, both physically and figuratively. It's a quiet area, a periphery, where time works differently, and yes, it is also unfortunately a war zone once every few years. In the program, I tried to create a balanced mosaic of all of this and, hopefully, put it in the spotlight for the international audience.

Animation stories from Mexico
In this tribute of ANIMASYROS, in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute, the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and the National Society for Culture and Arts (FONCA), the new film cycle "Animated stories from Mexico" is presented. It consists of a collection of mexican animated short films made over the last thirty years by animation designers and independent artists that showcase the richness of fantasy, but also Mexico's tradition in visual arts, literature and audiovisual media.
• The first part, called “Tú, yo y los demás” ("You, me and the rest") proposes eight outstanding mexican short films, including urban surreal stories and magical, familiar narratives showcasing individualism and digitalization in today's society.
• The second part called “La mirada femenina” (“The female look") is dedicated to the best, female animation makers in Mexico. It shows a different sensitivity to issues related to women, from a political and social point of view.
• “Un brinco pa’allá” (“A jump beyond"} is the third and final part in our mexican animated film series. The connection with ancestral stories, belief in the spirits of the house and folk Saints demonstrate respect for Mexico's narrative and visual traditions.
The curator of the cycle is Lourdes Villagomez, who included fundamental works from a historical perspective and contemporary films by more than twenty prestigious animation artists.
The production of most of these works was realized thanks to the support of the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) and the National Society for Culture and Arts (FONCA).

Behind the scences of the «The Kite»
Ο
Martin Smatana presents behind the scenes of his short stop motion puppet film “The Kite” and the process of building scenography and animating. When he started to develop a story for children about death, many asked him if he had gone mad. Then, he was reading a lot of books and articles about how to speak about such complex issues with children with metaphors and symbols. It was important to have joy and hope in a story about death.
He decided to use only gestures and body language. To show the process of getting thinner, he decided to build puppets out of textile layers. The boy has many of these layers; he is three-dimensional and has perspective, because he has all his life in front of him. But as the grandpa gets older, he gets thinner, and at the end of his life he is as thin as a sheet of paper, so one day the wind just softly blows him and takes him up to the sky.

A collective community project about the African Diaspora, “The AfroGreeks”, was initiated in Greece in 2015 by Døcumatism. It consists of video installations, interviews, social interactions, research, public actions, and an archive – laboratory. The term Afro-Greek is a self-proclamation that the protagonists of the work use in a critical way. It was first used publicly in 2019 as the title of a video installation by Døcumatism, during a public dialogue at the Kypseli Αgora.
It launched an artistic movement documented, doing much to stimulate a public discussion about the African diasporic communities in Athens and beyond. Initial events took place in the neighborhood of Kypseli, one of Athens’ most culturally diverse areas but one that had been marginalized for a long time. Døcumatism has created a network of collaborators within a community whose protagonists are mostly the members of the African Diaspora in Greece. Collected by Døcumatism, their stories highlight the problems of integration linked mainly to marginalised trajectories. The resulting archive that has been created represents the first attempt to document the history of African communities in Greece. It contains audiovisual research material spanning four centuries, portraying the history of the African Diaspora in the Mediterranean through artistic processes, as part of the national narrative and Greek history.
“The AfroGreeks” project is a dynamic platform of expression for the participants, as artists and as active citizens in the effort to combat all forms of racism.
The project has been presented internationally at universities, conferences, the Center of Contemporary Art in Geneva, Serpentine Cinema, the Afroeuropeans Conference, ICA Sofia etc. The presentation of the AfroGreeks at the Drama School of Athens will be accompanied by live events: concerts, workshops, open discussions, and guided tours.

The film is the third episode of the series of historical animated documentaries under the general title "Hellenic Places". The narrative is based on the relationship between place and space. Four themes: mythology, antiquity, the Venetian rule and the Ottoman rule tell the story of Messolonghi's journey as a timeless "little threshing floor" (alonaki in Greek). Our guide within time is a bird, which is a permanent inhabitant of Messolonghi’s lake and a symbol found in the poems of Greece’s national poet Dionisios Solomos & the significant Greek poet Kostis Palamas.
Europe and Contemporary Artists: Joining Forces for Good
The discussion highlights the powerful synergy between artistic creativity and the contemporary European environment, where the European Parliament has a leading role in supporting artists and emerging art forms to achieve a fairer and more pluralistic Europe. In the context of an animation film festival, this conversation will focus on the ways in which artists can inspire social change and the promotion of European values. Through animation - a medium that combines art and storytelling - these collaborations address pressing societal issues such as inclusion, diversity and the call for a fairer future, fostering cultural unity and promoting innovation.

The Emile Awards Come to Greece for the First
Time at ANIMASYROS
After a four-year hiatus, the Emile Awards are making their debut in Greece! The award ceremony, marking a new chapter for the legendary European animation awards, will be held at the historic Apollo Theatre of Hermoupolis in Syros on Monday, September 23, as part of this year's ANIMASYROS powered by PPC 2024 Festival.
Following two highly successful editions in Lille, France, in 2017 and 2018, the European Animation Awards—named after French pioneers Emile Reynaud and Emile Cohl—are being revived by a group of esteemed animation professionals from across Europe. Vassilis C. Karamitsanis, president of ANIMASYROS, also serves as the president of the Awards' organizing committee.
This grand celebration of European animation will recognize the best films of the year, honor the talent and achievements of creators and professionals from over 30 countries, and showcase the diversity and creativity of the European animation community.
