01 A Place for Water Community Centre Alwar, Rajasthan | 4th Semester Alwar Water Collaborative is a community center located at the threshold of the Aravailli Hills and the city of Alwar, near the Moosi Maharani Ki Chattri. It aims at creating awareness about the exisiting water systems through constant engagement with the built form. The built form has been conceptualised as channel for people and water. The movement pattern for both water and people has been derived from the flow - hold - flow pattern followed by the existing canal on site which brought the water in from the top of the Aravalli hills to the tank near the Moosi Maharani Ki Chattri.

Level 1 Shops and Health Care

A Street and Labryinth of Stone TThe dimensions and spans of spaces comes from the constraints (opportunities, actually) of the Stone available in the region, the yellow sand stone. The construction is a combination of load bearning semi dressed rubble stone walls and trabeated system of stone columns and beams. The maximum span was of 2.6m (c-c).

Level 2 Restrooms and Kitchen

Commu

Level 3 unity Hall and Cafe

01

Level 4 Guest rooms and Work Spaces

Origins The pools of water within the spaces collect the water from the waterfalls during rains and the courtyards work as a climatic response.

Flow The water channels along the path carry the water from the origins to the canal and along with the water brought down by the wall-spouts.

Pauses The pauses for water and people make spaces for interaction amoung people and with water alike.

Destination The destination of water is the existing canal where it joins the water coming from the mountaints.

01

Journey of Water TThe journey of the water begins from the top of the project as the waterfalls and flows through the project with pauses along its way. The water from the roof is brought down along the walls modified as water carriers, into the channel. Along the path there are various edge conditions created for people to interact with water.

02 Books, Etc. Book Store with a Cafe Udaipur, Rajasthan | 3rd Semester The first half of the studio focused on studying the architectural attiutde, style and language of the architect Carlo Scarpa. The attitudes were catagorised as Physical and Ephemeral Substances, Conceptual and Organisational Devices and Making and Detailing. Each of these categories were demonstarated and tested out through a cube installation, a maze and trophy respectively. The second half of the studio dealt with creating a Book Store and Cafe in Udaipur, based on the architect’s attitude. The site is located on banks of Fatehsagar Lake with the City Palace as a back drop.

Levels The floor has small level differences to divide the space into more relatable and intimate scale.

Trees The roof of the pavilion cafe has been shaped accomodating the trees around and create a feel of being nestled into betwen the trees.

Metaphor The two smaller pools created represent the lakes of Udaipur. The Fateh Sagar and the Pichola lakes.

Geometries Each function has a different geometry yet they do not depend on the fuction.

02

An Interface TThe project becomes a journey between the land and water. Located at the edge of the lake in a way that it facilitates interaction with the water and allows for spaces to enjoy a performance with the view of the Aravallis as a backdrop. It is on the same edge as a boating pier and the wall of the palace. The pavilion like cafe becomes a space for book lovers and trourists to pick up book and sip a tip without loosing out on the views.

Scale The volume of the books store is split by the low mezzanine which makes the heights closer to human scale.

Roof The seemingly heavy roof is supported on thin columns emphasising the attitude towards mass.

Datum The roof acts as the datum that brings the various plinth levels which demarcates various funtions

02

02

It’s all in the details The wall sections gives the sense of space in the book store and also focuses on the material palette of various kinds of locally available marbles used, the local jikky plaster and mahogany wood. The axonometric drawing shows the washroom shaped in the form of Scarpa’s famous motif of intersecting circles. The washroom is made with exposed concerete and has marble counter and brass fixtures.

03 House for a Musician Incremental Building Fatehpur Sikhri, Uttar Pradesh | 3rd Semester The first half of the semester involved the visit and the study of the Monument Complex of Fatehpur Sikhri. The complex was observed through various lenses in order to understand the strategies that contributed to the experience of the place. The second part, was the house for a musician. The site was in the fields behind the town of Fatehpur Sikhri. The house was developed in stages such that it grows from the scale of a house to an instiution, from the setting of the 1970s to 2020. The site had a pavilion and a tree as its immediate context, with and rigde as the backdrop and the view of the ancient fort wall built by Babur.

The Humble Beginnings | 1970 | Stone

Family Grows | 1990 | Stone and Timber

A Legacy 2020| Stone, Timber and Steel

The house is surrounded by open spaces creating spaces for interactions which open up to the elements of the landscape. Creating inner world and connecting with outer world on larger scale. The house of the musician still remains the centre of the institution.

03

Stage 1 The house of the musician is placed close to the pavilion creating a visual connection between the two

Stage 2 The sister’s and students residents were kept by themselves maintaining the privacy and open spaces.

Stage 3 The same principle was carried forward for keeping the musician’s house as the centre from where it all began.

Structure Combination of trabeated and load bearing systems to create view points.

04 Planetarium Working Drawings Ahmedabad, Gujarat | 5th Semester The site was the old AES Girl’s Hostel near Commerce Six Roads in Ahmedabad. The load bearing structrue of the building lends itself to many modifications. The program was to change parts of the hostel blocks into a Science Museum, part of which is the Planetarium. The form of the Planetarium is predetermined by the function and stands out from the existing. One enters a large open foyer which is in contrast to the closed auditoruim. The volume of the foyer is split by the circular concrete slab which houses the auditorium which is enclosed by two concentric domes that rest on the slab. The foyer extends out as a deck that opens up to the view of the ever buslting Commerce Six Roads.

This one

The Foyer and The Stars The lower floor is the large foyer which gives the space for people to gather. The floor also opens up towards the north and the south to the views of the street and the courtyard, respectively. The staircase leads upto the auditorium and the upper deck. The auditorium has a capacity of 28 people. The outer dome is made of steel and the inner dome is made of timber. The space between the domes is used for keeping the projectors and HVAC systems. The external columns, which support the roof, and the dome symbiotically support each other also creating the opportunity to have the upper wooden deck.

05 Center for Music Performace spaces Bangalore, Karnataka | 7th Semester Indian Music Experiece (IME) is an organisation that aims at spreading awareness amoung the youth to revive Indian classical and folk music with a face lift, through teaching, performances and exhibitons. This intervention as performance space can create a new foot hold for the organisation in the revered location of Lal bagh. It could create movement in the the lesser frequented side of Lal bagh, revive connections with the lake and open up a rather, closed edge of the botanical garden giving it a new layer of identity that gives an opportunity for the people to engage with music in the their daily routine activites.

Elimination of the wall and placing the auditorium and insitution separately and it is connected by the plaza which opens up from the street.

Position of the Auditorium provides the backdrop vista and the slope for seating. The insitution is nestled among the trees in a more humble character of learning.

Different Performance spaces of sizes and intimacy

The form is derived from the mulitpicity of use and as response to the natural elements on site.

06 The Conscious Collective Mixed Use for Imagined Society Ahmedabad, Gujarat | 9th Semester The concept of the studio is based on creating a society in the year 2025 as an aftermath of the pandemic. Wherein a group of people with similar ideology come to the architect to create a place for them to accomodate their specific requirements. The studio followed an Iterative process of design, where two different iterations were worked on. many took to understanding the self as a larger collective, The Consciousness. By taking out time to understand and practice a more aware life they realized what their true identity is, the identity which opens up the universe to them, the one is the world and the world is one. But this didn’t mean they have all left their everyday jobs, relationships and their own being behind, just a more inclusive perspective. They come together to redefine what living together is. A society where no one is a complete “stranger”. There is empathy at the highest level. The Spiritual Journey becomes the way of life. Relationships though not severed have new meaning. A new definition of family. You become one with the world and the world is within you!

Education

Activities as a Community

The world becomes the family. Biological lineage is absent. Children are brought up separately and everntually become part of society through adoption by elders with similar interests. They can eventually join the rest of the society by themselves as well. The concept of marraige as an institution or ritual is absent.

Childern are brought up in the Gurukul where every child is closely observed for the strengths and weaknesses and ultimately the education is tailored accordingly. There is no age segment for each level of learning, it is according to the pace of the child.

Activities such as cooking, bathing and nursing become community activities. There are different levels of privacy for the activities as well where one can be themselves even when they are part of the community.

Since there are individual living rooms, the common meeting space becomes an active centre and the street like quality at every level enhances the chances of meeting and exchange.

Distribution of functions across leveles

Second Iteration Taking the learnings from the focus on individuality increased. The form had to reflect the concept of uncompromised individuality in the collective. The idea was to provide variations in the experiences of individuals according to their principles and prefernces. The idea that spirituality could mean differently to every one and how one practices and paves their path to connect with Consciousness.

Circulation The circulation space is around the central atrium from where different forms can be seen between the grid of the structural steel frame.

The Atrium The large central atrium creates a visual connection with all floors.

Mixed Use and Residential TThe aim was to create as many possible variations in the kinds of residences and how people can live together and the arrangements would reflect the nature of relationship between the elders and the adopted young. The choice for the level of privacy is manifested in the kind of residence one chooses and the materiality they prefer.

Stone Dormitory The concept of the common spaces has been retained and becomes the center for interaction. Workshop
