Neural Kubrick Design Project

Academic - M.Arch Bartlett UCL, Type : Design Project Stanley Kubrick in 1968 speculated on the arrival of human-level Artificial Intelligence in “2001 A Space Odyssey”. Some 16 years past his prediction, our project “Neural Kubrick” examines the state of the art in Machine Learning, using the latest in “Deep Neural Network” techniques to reinterpret and redirect Kubrick’s own films. Three machine learning algorithms take respective roles in our AI film crew; Art Director, Film Editor and Director of Photography. The outlook of the project is an artist-machine collaboration. The limitations of the machine are achieved by the artist and the limitations of the artist are achieved by the algorithm. In the context of the project, what the machine interprets is limited to either numbers, classification of features or generation of abstract images. This output is curated by us into a coherent narrative, translated back into human perception. The project is based on Stanley Kubrick’s movies as input for three machine learning models, namely The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and 2001 A Space Odyssey. The generated videos display a machinic interpretation of the three movies, through a collaborative effort between the artist and the algorithm.

Photogrammetry of scenes from the movie The Shining

Photogrammetry of scenes from the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey & A Clockwork Orange

Machine as Film Editor - A convolutional neural network defines or classifies visual similarities between the given scene and a dataset of hundreds of different movies creating a parallel visual narrative.

Machine as Art Director - A Generative Adversarial Network that reimagines new compositions based on the features it interprets from the input dataset

Machine as Director of Photography - A recurrent neural network takes the role of the Director of Photography, defining camera paths that we have reshot in virtual space.

140 HR - Sound Augmented Reality Studio Project

Academic - M.Arch Bartlett UCL, Workshop Type : Sound Workshop Location : London The Bartlett school of Architecture moved back to its old building at 22 Gordon street leaving the 140 Hampstead road building. The building is giving way to the new Euston station extension. The project looked at using technology to facilitate a auditory experience of the history of the building The building in his tenure has changed programs from being a workshop, to an architecture school, now an abandoned building to a new railway station. The installation looks at reliving the memories of the building through an auditory experience. Google’s Project Tango Tablet was used to facilitate the experience. A walk in the empty space of the building brings back the memories of its past and this installation captures the past life of the building through the aspect of sound.

Border Line - Wearon Studio Project

Academic - M.Arch Bartlett UCL, Workshop Type : Body Haptics Location : London Border Line is a modular necklace designed to alert the wearer of alternative urban boundaries through vibrations and light. The data of the urban boundary is fed in by users and collected on a networked platform. The platform is called which can take in real time location data and store it in relation to the map of the place Inspired from the urban boundaries that exist in the city for example physical boundaries and visual boundaries and material boundaries. There are spaces in the city which have traces of the past but have diminished during the courseof time. The project looks at reexperiencing the boundaries in the city. For the project the site chosen was the Brunswick square park in London. This place was originally Fondling hospital but only some portions of the hospital is left and the remaining space is a public garden.

Device

Physical Mapping of Invisible Walls. The Foundling Hospital was demolished in 1920 and the site is now used as a playground The user navigates through several sections of the hospital and experiences the layers of history in the urban setup Uploading the data (Plan of the site) on thingful

Performative Tectonic Skins (Textiles) Design Project

Academic - Final Year Thesis Project 2014 Type - Design Dissertation Location - Mumbai The focus of the research was to explore through design the expression-al potential of textiles in relationship with the technique of its construct. Working on designing a newer approach to textile exploration where there would be transformation of the surface moulded through interactive, intelligent sensor technology. The process would be to materialize diverse design ideas by textile construct where the aspects of structure and tectonic of the material would be looked upon. Develop a hybrid intelligent skin, which express the human body and its adaptation to the environment. In this relationship the observation would be to understand what the human body is feeling and how is the skin expressing it. Feeling could range from pressure, perspiration,to change in the temperature.

Prototype -1 Porous Square Darts A cubic form is created using four dart stitch as shown in diagram which can be contacted and expanded with the help of a help string attached at the back. Due to the material the prototype acts as a selective and porous skin which allows for control of temperature through the skin
