ANNA WHITELEY MEETS Let me introduce a man who has undoubtedly made his mark on the amateur scene over the last 12 months, and is now looking to do just that on the PGA tour, Bryson Dechambeau!
A
nna: Bryson, what a year you’ve had, you’ve recently just turned pro and this is your first major championship as a professional. Describe to us what it’s like to be here at Oakmont for the US open? Bryson: it’s an honour. It’s my second US open and I didn’t know if I was going to be back this year. I knew it after the amateur, but I knew turning professional was going to change things. So it was nice to turn professional and be back playing with the best players in the world. As you say, as reigning US amateur champion you achieved exemption into the US open, but you chose to give that up and re-qualify as a pro. Was that a bit of a risk or did you always have the confidence to do that? I thought that playing on the PGA tour as a professional rather than as an amateur would allow me to potentially play on the PGA tour by the end of

this year. It was either that or stay as an amateur and play as an amateur in these 2 events, and not making any money from the events that I’ve played in. Well it’s not just the US amateur championship that you won last year, you also claimed the NCAA championship. That’s put you on a very small list of elite plyers such as Tiger and Nicklaus who have achieved just that. How does it feel to be part of such a prestigious group of golfing legends? Well it’s something you can’t fully describe. You are in golfing history where not very many people have done that. That’s something I will take to the grave, and I am very proud and honoured to be a part of that group. They have obviously done some amazing stuff, and I am just trying to do my absolute best for the game of golf. Well, let’s talk about the Masters, your first major where you made the
cut. You earned yourself the silver cup as low amateur - what an amazing week,! Can you try and describe it to us? It’s an honour, it’s something that I’ll never forget and will always remember as being the highlight of my amateur career. One thing that is underrated is the amateur dinner. That’s something incredibly special that not many people get to go to, as is staying in the crow’s nest. That’s another aspect that most people don’t ever get to do. That was something I’ll never forget and it was quite a treat. You turned pro a couple of days after that. At your first event at Hilton Head, you only went and finished fourth! That was a fantastic result. Were you expecting such a successful week? Well, I knew that I could be right up there. I know that I have the game to win every single week. It’s just about putting a formula together and executing the formula. If you get a

known club brands; custom fitting; club testing; trick-shot displays; simulators; the latest golf gadgets; extensive retail; and the opportunity to win everything from a packet of tees to an exotic golf holiday, it is the ultimate day out for any golf enthusiast. The show will be hosted by Golf Juice presenter and YouTube sensation Mark Crossfield, whose golf coaching videos have received more than 90 million views. He will be accompanied by PGA professional Matt Lockey, who also enjoys a substantial following on social media, where he’s better known as ‘Coach’ Lockey. The duo often work together to produce videos and will be reunited once more to entertain visitors at the show. Crossfield is one of social media’s most popular golfing figures, with almost 200,000 followers on YouTube, in excess of 34,000 Twitter devotees, and nearly 60,000 Facebook ‘likes’. His videos cover coaching, equipment and course reviews, all delivered in his individual – often irreverent – style. He will also give away six free lessons every day via his social media channels, with the lucky winners benefiting from a 30-minute lesson with Crossfield and Lockey, which will be recorded and shown on the former’s YouTube channel. Crossfield, who has been coaching golf for more than 20 years, will also host the daily ‘Innovations in Golf’ section on stage, which focuses on gadgets and equipment new to the market. Crossfield said: “I love golf shows. I love the excitement and the buzz about them, and the enthusiasm for the sport that visitors generate. So I was delighted to be asked to work with the guys from the London Golf Show. “It will give me the opportunity to meet some of the many people who watch us on YouTube and to give a few lessons to show visitors. Also, and this is a great one for me because I love playing with gadgets, I’ll be presenting the ‘Innovations in Golf’ section, which will highlight some of the great new ideas in the game – and also some of the
wackiest. I can’t wait to get started.” To help launch the show, Crossfield, Lockey and Ladies European Tour stars Sophie Walker and Charlotte Thompson recently played ‘golf’ within the Bluewater complex, after the shops had closed for the day, with the unique round being recorded for publication on Crossfield’s YouTube channel.

Lyle & Scott is an iconic British menswear brand whose heritage lies within the golf fashion industry and, after a prolonged absence from the game, the signature Gold Eagle logo has made its return in the form of the 2016 golf collections available online at Golfposer. Here, we explore the rich heritage of this Scottish brand and detail its long and complex journey through the British fashion (and golf) scene.

FAIRWAY FASHION | LYLE & SCOTT is admittedly lacking in depth, but this actually increases the confidence levels with what is on offer this Spring; "one should never run before they can walk". The range of Gold Eagle golf shirts might be limited, but the quality of what is on offer is right up there with the best for this season. Fresh colours and signature tour branding features on some key styles such as the Hawick Tour polo shirt, whilst geometric detail features across a selection of shirts from both the Spring and Fall ranges. Lyle and Scott golf trousers is another category which has benefited from the renewed focus on golf wear. Lyle & Scott chino trousers feature added stretch in the fabric for maximum comfort and are available in the two classic colours of navy and beige, whilst a deep Claret Red will be introduced in the Autumn, all equally timeless and fashionable enough to wear off the course just as often as on the links. For a golf specific trouser, look no further than the Gullane Tech from Lyle & Scott – ergonomic stretch and a slim fit offers everything you need this season.
The Gold Eagle logo became as iconic as any other within British menswear, whilst the dedicated Green Eagle logo clearly differentiated Lyle and Scott golf clothing from anything else on offer by the brand. At the time, it made complete sense to diversify but, as the years progressed, the Green Eagle lost its appeal amongst the modern, style savvy golfers of this generation. Generally speaking, the perception of the Green Eagle became slightly less expensive in comparison to the Golden eagle – suggesting that every polo shirt, merino sweater or chino with a Green Logo was of inferior quality to anything else produced by the brand. It may not be the truth, but that’s what happens when the market becomes saturated with over-produced, over-distributed and under-priced clothing. The solution: discontinue the green and re-introduce the gold. The Lyle & Scott golf clothing range for 2016 now features that iconic Gold Eagle logo to re-align with the heritage and everything else associated with the brand – which is a great move in itself. However, more importantly for us, many more assets are also being injected into Lyle and Scott golf clothing with a whole new team at the helm – a team which is young, dynamic, trendy and forwardthinking with a collective ambition to vastly improve the range and help reinvent the brand within the designer golf fashion industry. No British menswear brand can come close to the quality of Lyle & Scott knitwear, with a historical link to Hawick in the Scottish Borders and an unrivalled expertise, which is also beginning to trickle down and through the rest of their golf apparel on offer. The Lyle and Scott golf polo shirt range

In conclusion – Lyle and Scott golf clothing is quickly returning to its former glory and the ranges for 2016 signal a clear step in the right direction. The heritage, the quality and the tailoring expertise has never wavered and we hope the return of the Gold Eagle can only help to reaffirm its status in golf wear in the years ahead. The range is far more exclusive, far more premium and far more stylish than anything else that’s been available with a green logo at the left chest though, as with any brand transformation, it will take time for Lyle & Scott golf to return to its former glory. So far though, we really like what we're seeing.

FAIRWAY FASHION | NIKE
But lo and behold – Nike have duly delivered once again. The Nike Infrared Air Max golf shoes are finally launching this month and it’s almost inevitable that these will prove just as popular as the original release, if not even more so. The classic OG colour way is iconic for good reason; the combination of the white upper, black mud guard, grey accents and bright Infrared detail looks super fresh and stands out for all the right reasons. As a functioning golf shoe itself, the Nike Air Zoom 90 IT has already been receiving rave reviews from both Nike golf fans and the most scrutinising critics from across all social media channels. A seamless Ariaprene waterproof upper offers superb comfort and reliable performance, whilst the onepiece bootie construction provides exceptional support and comfort around the collar of the ankle. Traction is ensured with the design of the outsole (also easily wearable off the course) – whilst the Zoom cushioning replaces the original bubble design of the Air Max 90 sneaker to bring the wearer closer to the ground during the golf swing.

The launch of the Nike Infrared Air Max golf shoes comes at a time when the golf footwear market is already a hot topic of conversation. Nike Golf are very much leading the way with their 2016 offering which blends classic sneaker silhouettes with the same reliable performance technologies that the modern golfer demands. The Air Max inspired Air Zoom 90 IT is one of the outstanding styles from this year’s selection and we have no doubt that the new Infrared colour way will hit the spot for both Nike followers and the everyday golfer with a keen eye for style. The Nike Air Zoom 90 IT golf shoes will be a retail exclusive for Golfposer in this signature Infrared colour option.
