URBAN CYNOSURE Anish .A Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. - Mahatma Gandhi Greetings! My name is Anish. Curious and creative; patient and perseverant are the adjectives that describe me the best. The following projects are my selected works during my Academic tenure at Measi Academy of Architecture from 2015 - 2020, Chennai, and a one-year internship in Jaisim Fountainhead, Bengaluru during 2019. The academic works have been arranged in chronological order from the latest to oldest. As Leonardo Da Vinci once famously said “Art is never finished, just abandoned”, these displayed works are utter architectural explorations born out of the critical analysis, problem-solving, and a careful translation of our everyday life and feelings; which I believe that I have perfected to the best of my abilities.

The proposed cultural centre will be designed to showcase the rich and vibrant history, culture, and arts of Karnataka which includes the achievements of the •Wodeyar kingdom ( 1399 – 1955 AD ) •The Vijayanagar empire ( 1336 – 1646 AD ) •Hoysala Empire ( 950 – 1343 AD ) The Cultural centre which showcases the culture of Karnataka must be located within the state where it can relate to the built heritage of the kingdoms. Furthermore, such a cultural centre would require a large number of visitors catering to a large catchment population.

Skylights detailng

Representing the inherent charisma of the oldest of traditions and events, Mysore Culture stands as a distinct identity of the place. It is also flocking with a large number of tourists throughout the year. Hence a Cultural Centre in Mysore would be the most appropriate. This center will display the arts practiced in the above mentioned periods and also organize workshops, shows, and events to promote and create awareness about the same. The center will not just bombard the users with umpteen number of facts and information but will translate the traditional architectural characteristics of the three above mentioned kingdoms into a modern context.

COLONNADED WALKWAYS as seen in the market and plazas of ancient Hampi re-incarnated in a modern context pertaining to the function of the cultural centre.

LINEAR OPENINGS, the main design characteristic is seen in the Hoysala temples translated in the gallery with the form of alternating meshwork and fixed glass, designed carefully to avoid and hindrance while viewing exhibits.

Clay block with conrete filling CIRCUAMBULATION practice by visitors in the temples for centuries even today symbolised into a gallery with a ramp, which also eliminates the need for stairs as it links two levels.

FRAMING OF VIEWS - Seen in the ancient palace architecture where the royal women view social events through grills. This is incorporated here to create a sense of anticipation for the view of the exhibit

Contrast in form

2020 / Academic Project Design Studio – 7 Individual Work Mentors :Ar. Mohamed Anis Ar. Roopalatha Location :Chennai, India Climate :Tropical Wet & dry Site Area :- 404690 sqm. (40230 sqm detailed ) Builtup Area :- 82542 sqm (Kindly note that only the 10 acres of the highlighted plan which includes the full built volume of the terminal building and office were asked to be detailed out as per the design problem)

One- way curved roof

Highrise structure

The design presented a few major challenges like accommodating the high volume of parking required for the terminus, eliminating interference in the circulation of different users of the building. ( The office staffs and the public of bus terminus). The westfacing façades also presented a challenge for efficient shading). A contrast in the character of this multi-use project ( Bus Terminus & Office ) gives an opportunity to portray the same in the planning and design elements of this project. An open plaza in the front accommodates the people who want to wait in a calm natural background. The pedestrian entry allows a view and an eventful walk through the plaza into the terminus, while a drop off point provides ease of access for people using private transportation.

Passive cooling

The bus terminus connects to all the Municipal buses, Omnibuses, Inter-City buses through multiple access points provided at all strategic linking areas. The terminus is naturally ventilated with louvers on the walls and roof which ensures free air circulation and eliminates the need for any mechanical ventilation in the public area. The terminus has a 12m high ceiling to ensure enough openness and ventilation, to prevent echoing. A dynamic one-way curved roof is designed for the terminus which makes it aesthetically pleasing and also accommodates the strategically designed louvers to allow natural cooling of the place through stack effect.

2017 / Academic Project Design Studio – 5 Individual Work Mentors :Ar. Hariharan Ar. Suhasini Location :Chennai, India Climate :Tropical Wet & dry Site Area :- 26700 sqm Builtup Area :- 7550 sqm (academic block ) (Kindly note that only the academic block was asked to be detailed out as per the design problem)

Central Staircase

The site is located on a national highway that connects to the temple town of Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram is the land of rich culture, heritage, and finest workmanship of the Pallavas which can be seen in the sculptures and architecture of numerous archaeological sites around the town. Hence this makes it the perfect location for a fine arts college. The main objective was to create an interesting, interactive learning environment for the students. Plenty of open spaces were incorporated into the design to cater to the outdoor sketching and various display and installation needs. The intent was to open out the corners and let in an ample amount of light and continue to frame the landscaping view from every classroom. This was achieved through the corner windows used in the design.

Roof Garden

The ground floor comprises classrooms and workshops for the undergraduate (BFA Bachelor of fine arts ) courses. The outdoor gallery is located next to the courtyard and stairs in the central area. Workshops are strategically located in the corners in order to maximize the light in the area. This staircase accentuates the central node of the design and expresses and emphasizes the symmetry of the design. The first floor consists of the postgraduate (MFA – Master of Fine Arts) classrooms, workshops, staffrooms, HOD rooms, and a roof garden. The roof garden acts as an informal gallery or an interaction space for the students. The second floor consists of the exam halls, exam cell, and storage spaces.

SITE PLAN :-

FORM EVOLUTION :-

1) Modular, planned arrangement of classrooms

2) Dynamism in planning acheived through offset

3) Play of light and shade acheived through massing

4) Accentuating the corners and through openings

5) Landscaping accentuates the aestetics and provides a soothing view from inside

6) An geometric central staircase complements the form

The site is located in a busy locality of the metropolitan city Chennai, India. The site is located on the corner of the junction of two roads which gives an opportunity to maximize the view of the museum. The scale of the museum is made magnificent to makes one look at it with awe and wonder. The view one gets while climbing the stairs to the entrance is carefully framed to lead to a sense of anticipation of what lies ahead. The terrace garden adds to the overall aesthetics, in addition to providing an excellent view from the café. The ground floor holds the parking for 50 cars and 100 bikes on stilts. The admin office, restoration, and art marshal areas are secluded on the ground floor. Access has been provided for the admin area for visitors and a secluded service entry for logistics and transport purposes.

Ticketing counter, cloakroom, retail shops, lecture halls for orientation, temporary gallery, one permanent gallery, and hall of honor is located on the first floor. The temporary gallery is linked with the ground floor service lift which is placed next to the service entry for ease of loading and unloading. Hall of honor has been given the most importance by illuminating and highlighting it by placing it centrally with an ample amount of natural light. The next floor consists of the other two permanent galleries, a café, and a library. A walking corridor passes through the hall of honor and leading to the café and the terrace garden. Both the levels have an emergency exit in case of fire.

The concept of the museum was to make the museum itself as an exhibit of wonder like the exhibits that would be present inside. Inspired by architecture marvels like the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Solomon R Guggenheim Museum the form of the museum was consciously evolved to its form to make it aesthetically pleasing and emotionally appealing. The pristine white plaster of the museum is contradicted to get a sense of conflict.

The pyramidical skylight is the most striking aesthetic feature of the museum. This skylight illuminates the most important part (The hall of honour) of the museum and salutes the sacrifices of the martyrs of the country. The series of steps rising to the entrance of the museum symbolises the great heights and achievements of the Indian army. The landscaping and the flowers along the steps signify that peace can only be achieved by the might and bravery.
