disrupt the city

childrens area

There is a big stigma surrounding mental health in India, and an Architectural intervention with art based therapies and activities can be a subtle, yet long lasting way towards raising awareness towards mental health to create spaces that promote well being. Located in a commercial district in Mumbai known as BKC, the rigid, reductive, modern spaces foster a stressful environment. Introducing art based interventions will disrupt and slow down the environment. The site is a commercial plaza filled with plenty of unused non space in dire need of more dynamic engagement. Ritually commuted throughby professionals starting their day, school children pass by in the afternoon, the site attracts all ages at night. The design test explores how the site can cater to different activities that happen from day to night to fit the needs of the space according to the different times of the day. The program includes spaces for art based therapies, meditative spaces, as well as gathering spaces. Inspiration is also drawn from traditional well being activities practised in India such as yoga, religious spaces, traditional children’s games and meditation. The design of these spaces seeks to merge both the forms and the uses of vernacular Indian typologies. The strategies employed include grafting onto the existing buildings on site and creating a system of pods that filter in the surrounding to provide disruptions and healthy interruptions to the day to day life of people. This specific commercial plaza serves as a precedent for the myriad other non place plazas located throughout BKC.

STELLE OLTRARNO

Outdoor cafe, with the view of the countryside

Palazzina, holds study lounges, a bookstore and housing for younger students - dormitory style

Year of Project Completion : 4th year, Fall Semester (Fall 2020) - CSU IP Firenze - Study Abroad Observatory - main attraction of the site

Project Assignment : Student Housing at Forte Belvedere, Florence, Italy. Project Description : The project is located on a historical site, which includes a house and fortress previously owned by the Medici Family of Florence. The existing buildings on the site includes the historical central Palazzina. The purpose of this project was also to find a way to bring together the locals of Florence and study abroad students in Florence together by creating a unique and mutually beneficial experience. I was inspired by the history of the site, where Galileo resided when he was a tutor for the Medici children, and where he made most of his most important discoveries. I chose to include an observatory and revolved my project around the views of Florence visible from the site as well as the views of the sky and constellations. After conducting research on the different constellations you can see from the sky at different times of the day, the form of the observatory was curated. Iincluded student housing in the existing Palazzina, as well as on the site, with the housing being underground to create semi private spaces and to also take advantage of the views of the sky.

Green Lawn - outdoor gathering space with views of Florence

Housing Units - with skylights and sunken courtyards, creating semi private spaces for students living in these spaces

Elevated Viewing Deck - to enjoy views of the Florence skyline, the famous Duomo is visible from here

Courtyard - sunken in courtyard space to double as a space for gathering and outdoor performances

Skylight angled so that Polaris is visible from underneath this point - The pointed skylight also doubles as a sun dial

Constellation Cepheus - A future pole star, circumpolar stars in this constellation always above the horizon Constellation Draco- almost directly overhead in the night - in 28 light years the star “Eltanin” will be the brightest star in the sky

Constellation Cassiopeia - Visible year round, low in the North

Constellation Ursa Major - The great bear, a part of the constellation can be seen from the sky at all times

sotto sotto lo lo stesso stesso tetto tetto Year of Project Completion : 4th year, Spring Semester (Spring 2020/21) - CSU IP Firenze - Study Abroad Project Assignment : Kindergarten for children and Library for senior citizens. Project Description : My project combines a kindergarten and a library for senior citizens, all under the same roof, aiming to bring them together through proximity and shared experiences. The project opens up opportunities to promote and facilitate mentorship and guidance by the elderly to the children. By placing the kindergarten and the library under the same roof, this road to learning and growth for the kids is wide open. The historical city of Florence is lacking in facilities for both the elderly as well as the children. This project, set in the heart of Florence, near Sant’ Ambrogio Market, is one of the most popular and frequently visited markets in Florence, and is at an ideal location to bring together the elderly and younger populations of Florence. The proximity to many other gardens and historical landmarks in the city makes it accessible to and from many parts of Florence. By increasing interactions for the elderly, it serves to improve their mental health and well being. The loggia serves as a filter into the site, to ebb the main pedestrian traffic at the street adjacent to the loggia. In my project, this space is left open to allow the people to occupy and roam freely in the area. The project itself has two excavations, aiming at facilitating permeability in the area. One of the voids is in the library, aim to guide the people from Del Matriri Del Popolo to Allgeri, which can then lead them to the Sant’ Amrbogio market, and to facilitate circulation throughout the city center. The other void, placed near the kindergarten, aims to facilitate permeability and circulation through the site itself.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Year of Project Completion : 3rd Year, Double Quarter (Winter Quarter 2019 & Spring Quarter 2020) / Stacey White Studio Project Assignment : [ Future University ] Master Plan in collaboration with Studio class and a Performing Arts Center in a potential CSU Campus in Stockton, California Project Description : Many of Stockton’s major issues stem from a lack of community and opportunities for young people. The youth of Stockton needs more supervision, because they have parents who have to commute to the Bay Area for work. The community center and performing arts center can be a space for them to be in when they cannot be at home. This deficiency likely increases he amount of crime committed by youth who have no other outlets, diminishes their interest and participation in school. Floor Plan - Level 1 This also gets in the way of their desire and ability to pursue higher education and to contribute to the economic growth of the city. Our goal is to create a building that: gives Stockton’s youth the exposure, role models, and experiences that they’re currently lacking; providing a space for Stockton’s existing artists to showcase their work and inspire future artists, and that brings Stockton’s broader community together. Project was done using Revit, in collaboration with Elizabeth Reed. For a more detailed view of the project visit : https://issuu.com/anishashikre/docs/book_anishashikre
