Anita Hu ay2hu@uwaterloo.ca anita-hu.ca
Hi, My name is Anita Hu and I am a third year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I strive to design spaces that emphasize the human experience, and am always motivated to find new motivations for my designs. Aside from architecture, I enjoy photography, discovering music, and cultivating new plants. This portfolio aims to represent my abilities over the last few years at Univeristy of Waterloo and I hope you enjoy my selection. University of Waterloo School of Architecture 2018 - 2023

THE MIXING MIDDLE 3A DESIGN STUDIO - 04.2021 Supervised by Adrian Blackwell This modular transitional housing seeks to provide a place for the displaced tenants in the area. After hearing feedback from members of the community, spaces such as a shared kitchen, a gardening space on the roof specifically for the tenants, and characteristics such as the open corridors of the building, seek to promote permeability and increase tenant interaction. The ground floor aims to foster and maintain community relationships through a public garden, a co-study room, and a space for children, to relieve the stress of being uprooted from their homes. This modular housing consists of a CLT structure with precast concrete flooring to prevent the decay of the structure, and panels are prefabricated and then flat packed before being assembled on site. The building’s facade is a horizontal wood cladding that is clipped into place instead of nailed, so each piece can be taken down and reused. Carefully selected materials ensure the graceful aging of the building and the ability to recycle certain materials after the building’s life cycle.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
1 - FABRICATION CLT fabricated from Element5 in Ontario is assembled with other modular materials and flat packed.
2 - FLATPACK Local construction processes reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to transport materials to the site.

3 - UNPACK Boxes are unloaded on site and empty parking lots near the site can be used to temporarily assemble the modules. Materials are unpacked and prepped under a temporary structure to control environmental conditions.
4 - CONSTRUCT Assembly is completed in covered, sealed conditions.
5 - STACK Sections of each module are loaded and fastened to each other on site.
6 - FINISHED Completed construction.

LIBRARY + 1B DESIGN STUDIO - 04.2019 Supervised by Rick Andrighetti & Maya Przybylski
This library near Toronto seeks to integrate itself within the small community, taking into consideration its surroundings. Production rooms and a seating area that converts into a theatre is mixed into the program of the library to correspond with the many kinds of art studios in the area. The pedestrian bridge and transit nearby allows for easy accessibility to the library.

HOLOCENE 1B BUILDING CONSTRUCTION - 04.2019 Supervised by Terri Boake and Cam Parkin In collaboration with Madeline Engen
Located in the gorge of Watkins Glen State Park, New York, the Holocene seeks to emphasize the juxtaposition between the water and the jagged rocks. Through using the space between the fractured land, each level of the pavilion offers a unique experience. The Holocene serves as a ramp from the top of the fracture, spiralling downwards to showcase the hundreds of layers of sediment formed in the last thousands of years, ending at the rushing water, where the gorge will continue to erode.
