Welcome to our new catalog! At Anita Goodesign we love to create embroidery designs and we love to teach you how to use them. With this new book, we combined both of our passions into one great new product. Our new Fundamental Curriculum has been joined with our beautifully revamped catalog. Let’s talk about both products.

This Fundamental Curriculum contains 15 different designs and each design will teach you a new technique. That sounds great, right? Well, I wanted to make it even better. All of the quilting designs go together so you can actually use these designs to create something. We are also giving you some tips on stabilizer, choosing colors, and other ideas to create better embroidery. This curriculum was written for beginners to learn more about embroidery, but we wanted to design a collection that even a veteran embroiderer would want to stitch. The step-by-step instructions are included in this book and the designs are on the included DVD-Rom.

Our catalog has been completely redesigned with beautiful projects being shown in full-color detail, descriptions of the designs, and a technique key for every one of our collections. ABOUT THE COMPANY Anita Goodesign was founded over 10 years ago by Steve Wilson, a leader in the industry. He has won over 20 digitizing awards, written over 70 articles on digitizing and embroidery techniques, and has produced 18 digitizing how-to videos. He has digitized thousands of designs for the home textile and decorating industries, and is bringing that experience and expertise to the Anita Goodesign Home Embroidery Collections. When we started, we had 5 employees, a tiny 3,000 sq. ft. office, and a simple mission: to create the best designs in the industry and provide a top-notch embroidery education to go along with them. That mission remains the same (but now we have over 50 employees and 23,000 sq. ft. to stretch our legs.) Everything Anita Goodesign creates from ideas, to designs, to production, to shipping it out to you, starts and is carried out right here in Charlotte, North Carolina. We want to take you step-by-step through our process, so you can see how much goes into everything we create.

DEVELOPING CONCEPTS Everything starts with an idea. Those ideas come from every member of our staff and even from our customers. These ideas and inspirations are compiled and put on a list of things that we might want to design. Some of those ideas are great, some of them might not be great, but we always explore them in art meetings and on retreats. Once we decide on the concept, then we consider whether it’s going to be quilting, embroidery, or a project. ARTWORK

Anita Goodesign apart – we actually go into each piece of artwork and place the actual stitches. This allows us to create realistic animals, hand-shaded flowers, and authentic-looking hand-stitched designs, truly capturing a wide array of different art styles. EMBROIDERY Once the digitizing is complete we move on to actually embroidering each design. The designs are put on memory sticks, loaded into home embroidery machines, and stitched out step-by-step. This is when we check for errors, choose the colors, and make sure your embroidery designs are beautiful. After we test each design, we stitch out all of our samples, meaning that each design is embroidered a minimum of 12 times before you ever see it. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Every time we create a collection we create a project that goes with it. That project could be a quilt, wall hanging, towel set, or something totally new like a plant cozy, a 3-dimensional design, or a fabric dyeing project. That’s why we’ve added a whole new department to our process. The research and development team tests out all of these different project ideas to figure out the best way to do each one. They research what materials work best, figure out new and exciting ways to put our embroidery machines to good use, and do things like dunk an entire quilt in fabric dye, just to see what happens. TUTORIALS

We can then move forward with the artwork phase. We have a team of artists who draw or paint every single release that we ever come out with from scratch. We don’t use clip art; every piece of artwork we use is completely original and created uniquely for our collections.

For every design collection or project we create, we write a tutorial to go along with it. These tutorials include step-bystep instructions with photos to show how to complete each design or project. We also include a list of color changes and thread colors that we used when stitching out the designs. The tutorials often include tips and tricks that can be applied to any embroidery or quilting project.

photographed or scanned at a high resolution so that you can see each design clearly. Using the original artwork and photographs, the designers develop a look for the packaging and all related materials for every collection.

customer service. That means, when you call or email with a question, you actually get a response from a real person.

MANUFACTURING

Education is the most exciting part of what we do at Anita Goodesign. We put together these beautiful Embroidery Parties that teach cutting edge projects in a fun, hands-on team-sewing environment. Every quarter we introduce a brand new curriculum featuring new themes, new designs, and new projects. We have a team of over 12 educators that go show to show, all around the country to teach you the latest embroidery techniques.

Manufacturing is a very important step at Anita Goodesign. During the manufacturing process, CDs are burned, memory sticks are duplicated, collateral materials are printed and sorted, and product is shipped all across the country to our dealer locations and Club members. Every Anita Goodesign product that you own or will own started here, and has been 100% manufactured in the USA. MARKETING As soon we release a new collection or introduce a new program, you’re going to know about it. Our Marketing department creates plans for how to best share news and show you our newest products. Any email blasts, social media posts, promotional videos, brochures, ﬂiers, and contests you see were orchestrated by our Marketing team. VISUAL MERCHANDISING We have also added a department to handle all of our Visual Merchandising. Any of our new modular displays you see at Workshops, our Events, or in your dealer’s store were planned and carried out by our Visual Merchandising team. This way, you can best see our products and learn about all of our great collections and programs. SUPPORT TEAMS We couldn’t do what we do here at Anita Goodesign without our teams who handle all the necessary day-to-day operations. Our Customer Experience Team makes sure that our dealers have everything they need to successfully carry our product, manage Club members, and run in-store Workshops. We also have a full administrative department who handle our Club program, a customer service department to assist you with technical problems, and a team speciﬁcally dedicated to planning and coordinating all of our Events. It’s because of these teams that we’re able to offer the best possible

EDUCATION

For our Workshops, we ﬁlm step-by-step video tutorials, create beautiful presentations, and put together a toolkit for our dealers. With these tools they essentially become part of our team of Educators, and are able to provide you with an embroidery education right from their store. Whether you attend one of our Events, or head to your local dealer for a Workshop, you will receive all the projects taught in class and a beautiful full-color tutorial book. Education is really the most important thing that we do here at Anita Goodesign, because what’s the point of creating beautiful designs and projects and not explaining how to do it. We take great pride in all of our educational materials that we produce every single day.

There are 15 different embroidery techniques demonstrated in this book. We decided to come up with a new way to show you what techniques appear in a collection. We came up with 15 different icons that represent the 15 different embroidery techniques. The same icons will then be used on all of our design collection packaging going forward. The catalog also has the icon key under each design collection so you will easily identify what technique is being used. That way you will never have a question what technique is taught in a collection. Best of all there is an index in the back of this book that will allow you to search for a collection by name or by technique.

Free Motion Frenzy

FREE MOTION FRENZY For this Premium Plus Collection we decided to design something completely different. We carefully selected 20 of our favorite Mix & Match Quilting collections and digitized free motion blocks to go with them using all new artwork. Everyone loves our free motion digitizing, but the 20 themes we selected did not include any free motion designs, so we decided to create them. That means if you already own any of the Mix & Match Quilting collections that are listed on the following page you now have all new blocks to go with them to create larger quilts or projects. You can also use these free motion blocks to create beautiful quilts and projects using only these designs. Each of the 20 themes has 5 different sets of designs and each of those sets has 5 different shapes. All of the designs in this collection are embroidered in a few easy steps. You will be creating a beautiful free motion quilt in no time!

Each of the designs comes in 2 different versions. The ďŹ rst is a single stitch version. The single stitch mimics traditional free motion quilting and is perfect for a subtle tone-on-tone quilting. If you are looking for a bolder look, use the 3-ply stitch. This stitch is perfect if you want to use contrasting thread.

You won’t find any halogens or noble gases in this table – instead you will find some of your favorite embroidery notions and techniques! CHRISTMAS TOWN After designing the Homestead Special Edition, we immediately had the idea for a Christmas Town using the same great landscape quilting technique. We went to work designing it right away! We designed houses, animals, elves, and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus. The designs all have beautiful trees and background elements that make them pop! All of the blocks can be rearranged to create your own scene. You can place all of the houses in a row or mix them up to make your Christmas village completely unique! Joining the blocks is very simple. There aren’t any design elements that cross over the blocks which makes them easy to line up. HALLOWEEN TOWN After we released Christmas Town, we decided to release another collection that allowed you to combine mini quilt block landscapes to create your own custom scene. With this collection, we created a “town” of Halloween scenes that connect together no matter which order you place them in. You can create a large quilt, a small pillow or any project in between. There are 25 different large blocks that combine appliqué and artistic digitizing to create this wonderful Halloween Town. There are also 8 transitional blocks that can be used as borders between the blocks if you want to customize your projects even further. We used a variation of the same art concept to create one of our most popular children’s collections titled Nursery Rhymes. This Special Edition consists of 20 different Nursery Rhymes and songs transformed into beautiful quilt blocks. Each of the designs combines the lyrics with appliqué designs and folded fabric borders. Sleigh Ride

SLEIGH RIDE For this collection, we commissioned one of our artists to paint a large scene depicting a classic country Christmas complete with a barn, sleigh, and snow. The end result was beautiful! We then took the design divided it into 12 sections and digitized them as individual designs. We created the wall hanging so that it could be done in three different sizes. Advent Calendar

ADVENT CALENDAR This is a really fun project for Christmas. This is an Advent Calendar with usable pockets. The pockets can be ﬁlled with candy or gifts, or you can use the included day markers to count down the days until Christmas! We’ve included a step-by-step tutorial that covers every aspect of this project. All of the blocks and day markers were created for the 5”x7” hoop. However, you will need a hoop capable of embroidering 6”x10” for the optional header. There are 2 large scene designs and one crazy quilt block included to create the optional header. We also added three straps at the top so that you can easily hang the calendar on your wall. You can use any method you prefer to hang your Advent Calendar.

The Ascension

THE ASCENSION There are hundreds of reference paintings for the Ascension. Instead of showing a complete scene like those paintings with the Apostles, we decided to show only Jesus rising through the clouds. The reason for this was that we wanted to add a lot of detail to Jesus and to do this we wanted to make him as large as possible. We added a lot of detail to the face and eyes of Jesus and the overall design. Once embroidered, this tile scene looks just like a painting. This is a 9-block tile scene that comes in three different sizes. The entire cloud background was created with hand stippling in multiple colors. The stippling was created with different densities so that the background has a beautiful layered look, but still allows the focus to be placed on the image of Jesus.

Animal Sketches

ANIMAL SKETCHES In this collection, we have assembled all 16 of our Playhouse animals to create 20 unique designs. Our inspiration for this collection was a simple sketch art technique. Using a two-color palette for each animal, we gave each of these hand drawn critters a charcoal gray sketched look highlighted by a second outline color. The ﬁnished result is an embroidered design that is both whimsical and artistic. They really look like they were sketched with colored pencils. Christmas Village

CHRISTMAS VILLAGE This collection depicts a traditional English village. It took weeks to digitize, as there are over 7,000 segments in the scene with a lot of hand shading and detail. This is an eight block tile scene that comes in four sizes. You will notice that we did not stitch any ribbons over the seams that join the blocks. This makes it a little more difficult because you will need to be more precise with your blocks. However, there is nothing wrong with adding ribbon, and we show you how this is done at the end of the tutorial.

Country Church

COUNTRY CHURCH The Country Church scene took months of planning. Our artist, Ginny, painted this scene and the end result was stunning. When we received the painting we were overwhelmed with the amount of work that it would entail. The painting was tacked up on the art wall and there it sat for a few months. Inspiration finally struck and Steve set to work on it. He decided to create a 9-block tile scene. Choosing the colors was the most difficult step. In the end he chose a lot bright colors to make the design really pop. The end result uses only 29 colors - can you believe it? The finished project looks like it uses so many more. Steve created the design mainly using hand-digitizing techniques. Each block took more than a day to digitize. When all of the designs were finished, there were more then 8,000 segments in the design. The Country Church looks like an actual painting. Covered Bridge

COVERED BRIDGE Our artist, Ginny, did a wonderful job painting the covered bridge scene. This design is truly spectacular. By digitizing with that kind of stitch, the designs look like they were created using embroidery floss instead of thread, which is a striking, bold effect. Footprints in the Sand

FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND Footprints in the Sand is one of our prayer wall hangings. It looks beautiful on the wall of any home or church. This is a very easy scene to create because most of the blocks are only a few colors. This 10-block tile scene is one of our fastest tile scenes to create. The unique part of this collection is the stippling. Stippling is not easy to do using free motion techniques so we decided to add it to the designs. There are 4 different sizes for the project. Letters to Santa

LETTERS TO SANTA Letters to Santa is an 8-block tile scene that features a mailbox set against a beautiful picket fence background covered in holly. This is the perfect Christmas wall hanging for any household. Since the collection only has 8 blocks, it is very easy to assemble. Each block uses appliqué to keep stitches to a minimum. We also use our fabric saving technique with this design. None of the fabric you see in the ﬁnished project is hooped. Instead we hoop muslin and use all of the visible fabric as appliqué. You will use half the normal amount of fabric to complete this wall hanging. The project comes in 4 different sizes.

Haunted House

HAUNTED HOUSE If you are really into Halloween, this collection is for you! Create a giant wall hanging with a spooky haunted house bursting with all the Halloween goblins such as witches, ghosts, scary pumpkins, swooping bats, and skeletons. You will be absolutely amazed at the detail in the Haunted House scene! The main differences between this collection and our other tile scene designs is that we used three different base fabrics for this project, and we also made use of appliqué. Honeycomb Quilt

HONEYCOMB QUILT To introduce a new honeycomb shape to our quilting collections, we couldn’t think of a better subject than bees! Carol, our art director, drew the artwork. Each of the designs coordinate perfectly, blending bees with ﬂowers and other design elements to create a beautiful quilt. We also added free motion quilting elements, sayings, and folded fabric blocks that compliment the main designs. When it came time to digitize the designs, we chose to use hand stitching techniques to emphasize the detail of the drawings. We used random stitch lengths with multiple passes so that the outlines and shading of the designs would not look uniform. To compliment the hand stitch style, we used a natural colored linen for the base with cotton fabric for the borders. Each of the designs is available in four sizes.

Into the Wild

INTO THE WILD We had the idea for the Into the Wild animal doodles at one of our art retreats and thought they would look fabulous when stitched onto knits. This was one of those concepts that was sketched out at the retreat and, as it developed, turned out even better than we expected. We started with an outline of the 20 different animals, and then doodled all of the details within the frame. They are all hand digitized. Each animal took hours to digitize due to the amount of detail in each one. The best part about the animals is that they are all created with one color of thread so they will stitch easily on your machine. Each animal comes in three different sizes.

These designs look great on t-shirts! We recommend hooping the designs using a wash-away stabilizer and embroidering them in a tonal thread color.

NATIVITY TILE SCENE The Nativity scene took months to plan. We started with rough sketches and then had our artist, Ginny, paint the scene. Once we received the painting, the planning started. We scanned the design and set the grid sizes. We decided this scene needed a large scale so we created it as a 20 block tile scene. Then we digitized the design. Every block contains a monumental amount of hand shading and quite a few appliqués to eliminate as many stitches as possible. The end result is stunning! The designs come in three different sizes.

Nutcrackers

NUTCRACKERS For our Nutcrackers collection, we decided to create 12 jumbo designs and quilt designs to go with them so you can create a project without measuring. Each Nutcracker is beautifully embroidered using only stitches and no appliqué. Centering an embroidery design on fabric and then trying to piece a quilt top or pillow often leads to complications. We decided to make it easier. Each Nutcracker comes in 3 sizes, and each design comes in a quilt block along with stippling. We also included isolated Nutcracker designs. Pledge of Allegiance

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Over the last few years we have created prayers and sayings in a tile scene format, so we decided to create a scene in the same vein for the Pledge of Allegiance. The giant majestic Eagle design has a beautiful hand shaded ﬂag as a background. The eagle is shaded completely by hand. It looks stunning when completed. The Pledge of Allegiance words themselves are the last step that is embroidered in each block. The design can be used with or without the words, and both versions look great. There are 9 different blocks, and each of the blocks come in 4 different sizes. There is also an optional border included. The 16 piece border uses a unique folded fabric chevron pattern to hide the seams.

Santa’s Ride

SANTA’S RIDE What could be a more perfect Christmas decoration than a giant swooping Santa ﬂying over town to deliver Christmas presents. This design collection is elaborately detailed with appliqué and metallic thread to create a scene that is truly spectacular! If you have never made one of our tile scene projects before, they are extremely easy to create. Each of the twenty squares is embroidered separately. Once all of the squares are stitched out, you trim each square with the same seam allowance all around. Once all of the squares are trimmed you simply stitch them together using a straight stitch, and then sew a ribbon down along the seams. Each block comes in three different sizes. We also include a few holiday sayings as well as border elements to complete your projects.

SANTA’S VISIT We created this classic scene of Santa on the night before Christmas delivering gifts under the Christmas tree. We wanted to create a window scene for this one, so we modeled the blocks after a classic window pattern. This collection has 9 rectangular blocks instead of the usual square blocks. This means less embroidering and sewing with the same wonderful end result!

Songbirds

SONGBIRDS The Songbirds collection is like 2 design sets in one! The ﬁrst part of the design is 14 isolated songbirds perched on branches and ready for any project you can think of. The second part of the design is a 12-block tile scene that combines all of the birds in one beautiful arrangement. The 12-block tile scene comes in 3 sizes. The unique part of the tile scene is the stippling. Stippling is not easy to do using free motion techniques so we decided to add it to the designs. This is an 8-block tile scene that features a turkey, soup, wine, cake, and a bowl of fruit. Each of the design elements are hand shaded for a painted effect. FIESTA FLOWERS This collection was inspired by handmade Mexican peasant dresses. We love the way they are decorated with bright beautiful hand stitched flowers. When we digitized these flowers, we used a technique that looks like they were stitched by hand. You will be amazed when you stitch these designs. DINOSAURS, SHARKS, & STUFF This collection is part of our Anita’s Playhouse line. It was actually one of the original ideas for the line. We have been keeping it a secret until now! There are over 20 different designs that started with dinosaurs. After we drew a few dinosaurs we said, “What else would boys like?” Everyone said, “Sharks!” So we drew some sharks and we said, “What else?” And we said, “Stuff!” We thought it had a nice ring to it. We came up with a new collection of realistic Roosters with an exciting project to go with it. We started with 10 jumbo realistic roosters in two different sizes each. Each Rooster is hand digitized and would look great on whatever project you decide to embroider it on. For our project, we wanted to avoid a typical quilt, so we went in a completely different direction. We designed 4 different quilt corners consisting of 9 blocks each. CORNERS & BORDERS After we created the Napkin Corners collection, we decided to take the concept a step further and create larger corners that are prefect for napkins, tablecloths, and centerpieces. This is a design collection that started as a project used in our Embroidery Parties. We wanted to create a project that demonstrated how to embroider on a napkin without any fancy hooping or stabilizer tricks. The project turned into a collection after we saw how excited everyone got when they discovered how easy it was! PEACOCKS We had so many ideas for peacocks that we created four different collections in one month. The art was drawn with an Art Deco era feel. They were a lot of fun to design and we used a few different techniques and color combinations. We created a few with the traditional blue colors, and then, for fun, we threw in golden and fuchsia versions as well. All of the large peacocks have one thing in common: they use appliqué. We actually used metallic appliqués. This made a huge difference in the “wow factor” of the designs. You can use any type of shiny fabric for the appliqué. If the fabric you choose is thin, simply back it with a fusible interfacing to make it more stable. We also included lots of feathers and smaller motif’s to go along with the large arge peaco peacocks so you can further embellish any project! oject!

SNOWMEN FOR ALL SEASONS

Who says that snowmen are just for the winter? We decided to design a different snowman for each month of the year. We created each snowman three different ways. The ﬁrst two versions are appliqué designs and the third way is a stitched version. You can use the monthly snowman on quilts or on garments. For this project we decided to design four different seasonal quilts. The quilts can be displayed separately each season or all together in a large wall hanging. As an added bonus, we created another set of designs that show the name of each month and are then embellished with seasonal details. The monthly designs are almost another collection themselves! The month names come in two sizes each and can be used on their own or to further embellish the snowmen. We’re sure that no matter what you decided to embroider the snowmen onto, you will love them each month of the year!

ROSEMALING CHRISTMAS Rosemaling is Norwegian for “decorative painting.” It has a very distinct style that incorporates stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining, and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns traditionally painted on wood. WOLVES

One of the most requested ideas for new collections is realistic animals. As you can imagine, we have created numerous collections to suit this category over the years. Wolves in particular have been requested a lot. Instead of releasing a collection with 20 or so small designs, we decided to do fewer designs but make them larger so that they could be digitized with even more detail. We created two different versions of most of the pieces of art. The ﬁrst was a realistic version full of layers and shading. The second was a charcoal sketch style of it so you can see how beautiful the design is in one color. All of the large wolves actually have a layer of appliqué as the base. You won’t even notice it when the design is ﬁnished but it keeps the stitches from sinking into your fabric while minimizing stitch counts as well. The designs all started out as pencil sketches and it was up to the creative team and digitizers to make them come to life. The designs all come in multiple sizes.
