recharge: white bay centre for creative learning PROJECT CONTEXT | The revitalisation of the heritage-listed White Bay Power Station. PROPOSED BRIEF | Establish a balanced development of mixed-use programs for the site of the White Bay Power Station, which integrates a sympathetic reuse of the historic site with a new modern character. The new development should meet the needs of the local community, as well as enable the identification of the power station as a global cultural icon for international visitors.
RESPONSE | The White Bay Centre for Creative Learning is a renewal project that represents a multifaceted solution to the abandoned White Bay Power Station, that has been developed with primary concern for the site’s heritage and history, community & cultural needs, potential for economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The new centre has a core focus on creativity, technological exploration, and experimental learning that is expressed through a range of educational and cultural public programs that cross over various disciplines. The diversity of programs that are offered aims to provide a socially inclusive framework for all potential visitors.

The Arts Hub, located in the Boiler House, is a place that encourages artistic and experimental creativity. The intention of the hub is both for viewing art and producing art. Different ‘zones’ accommodate different artistic mediums hanging artworks, sculptures, and digital and new media art. The refined, bright and light interior intends to evoke quietness and contemplation. The identification of the Arts Hub as Sydney’s first new media art-focused facility has been expressed through the pixel motif, which has applied in the detailing of the reception desk, the flooring pattern of the gallery, and the perforated screen detail (below). The perforations of this light-filtering screen occur in gradation, where most perforations occur corresponding to the existing fenestrations of the building.

IMAGE: WALKWAY TO CENTRAL VIEWING PLATFORM IN THE BIOMASS POWER STATION
The proposal for a new biomass power station symbolises the significance and continuation of the site’s industrial history. This new facility will as a catalyst for a sustainable Sydney, while providing power to the entire site. The site is well-known to much of the local population, however its history and industrial function is largely unknown. The public facility therefore also intends to educate people about its history, renewable energy, and power production technology. The former power station was at the forefront of technology in power production in the early 1900s. As such, the new power station celebrates the advancement of modern technology. Therefore, the sleek, modern, and industrial interior was driven by this technological focus.

The organic cafe presents a refined market-inspired interior that connects the space to the externally located organic community gardens and weekend markets in the main square. Raw and natural materials and textures paired with indoor plants reflect the type of food served at the cafe, while creating a calm, relaxed and fresh atmosphere. Pops of colour are integrated into the space through lighting design, furnishing, and tableware to reflect the variety of colours that are characteristic of fresh food markets.

feast BRIEF | Design a space for a 7-course feast for the 20 trustees of the Venice Biennale. The spectacle and excess of food and social politics is key.
RESPONSE | The feast is based on a 1529 Ferrarese feast menu; a feast about power, and the ceremony and plentitude of dishes, rather than the food itself. Therefore, the design intends to express the fantastical and artistic theatricality that Renaissance banquets had once portrayed, by blurring the boundary between ‘feast’ and ‘performance’. The space was designed to glorify the participation of each group - diners, wait staff, and kitchen staff. The materials of the design were chosen in direct relation to the site and the city of Venice, and aim to reflect the magic of Venice as an historical city.
MATERIALS | Acrylic with pixelated bookmatched marble print (in calacatta gold marble, white calacatta marble, and black marquina marble), jet black cowhide, transparent pearl resin with black pigmented gradient, polished copper, charcoal European oak.

IMAGE: THE DINING SPACE W/ VIEW TO THE CARVING STATION
The Renaissance saw banqueting join the arts, where food was combined with theatre, music, dance, painting, sculpture, and even architecture. Feasting was about the ceremony, etiquette, tableware, and approach to food, rather than an interest in tastes and flavours. The intent of the design is to convey the dining experience as a performance and ultimately, theatrically express the excessiveness of the menu. Therefore, each group is given a distinctive designated space that glorifies their ‘role’ in the feast. The frosted resin dining table (right) visually captures the excessiveness of the feast. Wasted food and drink thrown into the cavity builds up over the course of the night.

The powder room (above) mimics the language of the adjacent space, and aims to offer a personal luxury to each guest. The relatively small space boasts an 8-metre high ceiling, which highlights the grand scale of the Scuola di San Rocco. The linearity of the space, in both planning and detail, works to emphasise the scale. Congruent with the idea of performance and visualisation, water can be seen building up and travelling through a channel before it exits the faucet into the copper basin (right).

Tintoretto’s The Brazen Serpent (1575-1576) is the painting most closely connected to the new design. The colours most prominent in this painting therefore informed the colour palette. The actual materials of the palette were chosen in direct relation to the site and the city of Venice, and aim to reflect the magic of Venice as an historical city.

A spatial analysis of the existing site revealed a strong linearity and level of symmetry. Accordingly, the layout of the design follows a linear plan that runs along the length of the Scuola Grande.

contemplate BRIEF | To create a contemplative space that would also function as a food and wine bar after work hours, with an incorporated landscape component. The design must create a renewed experience for customers, while being respectful to the site.
RESPONSE | The design intends to celebrate the conditions and ageing qualities of the existing site, particularly in consideration of its subjectivity to weathering from natural forces. This has been spatially translated through carved spaces, which communicates the idea of (wind & water) erosion. This allowed for a blurring between the interior and the exterior, which connects the new design of the heritage site to its surrounding environment.
MATERIALS | Granulated concrete, honed limestone, split-face limestone, polished limestone, Sienna marble, translucent Sienna marble, translucent glass, underwater glass.
LANDSCAPING | Irish moss, barberry.

The main objective of the spatial strategy was to provide a series of public and private spaces, which could be experienced by different groups of people. This required an overall transitional element across all the spaces that would maintain the central scheme throughout the design.

missoni home flagship store BRIEF | Design a flagship store for homeware brand, Missoni Home. The design is to be a mixed-use typology of retail/hospitality, and must encompass the client’s concept and branding in a high-end retail environment.
RESPONSE | Missoni’s iconic patterns originated from early experimentation with coloured threads on a regular weaving loom. This process indicates the brand’s innovation and craftsmanship in its early years. The design intends to express the dynamism of the loom in movement. This is spatially realised through a diagrammatic translation of moving components of the loom, overlaid onto a spatial grid produced by a site analysis.
MATERIALS | Pink powder-coated steel square tubes, raw concrete, whitewash brick, white stucco finished plasterboard, toughened laminated glass.

The pink powder-coated steel tubes act as porous walls that juxtapose several solid walls, and are representative of threads on a weaving loom. The gradiented colour of these porous walls guides movement throughout the space, becoming more intense at openings and when leading into new spaces.

engage pavilion BRIEF | Propose a design for a ‘community information pavilion’ that will be used to promote the White Bay Power Station project (WBPS Centre of Creative Knowledge) to the local community, and provide information on the proposed scheme. The design should reflect the identity of the project proposal in relation to the site and community. Transportability, durability, and low-carbon materiality are key.
RESPONSE | The key driver of this design lies in the identity and character of the new proposal for White Bay Power Station. The core of the proposal is a focus on technology, creative learning, and social inclusivity. The information pavilion intends to reflect these core values through form, human interaction, and material use.
MATERIALS | Bioplastic tubes, clear acrylic.
