Undergraduate Architectural Portfolio - Anivratha Baggunji

Page 1

My name is Anivratha Baggunjji, a present fifth-year undergraduate student at Wadiyar Centre for Architecture in Mysuru, India. Playing with Lego as a kid built a curiosity within me towards creating and building objects, be it robots, toy models, or some woodworking. This led me to the field of architecture and it has since intrigued me! This portfolio is a collection of selected works from the first four years in architecture school. I hope it demonstrates my zeal for architecture and my interest in learning more about the profession.

I dedicate this portfolio to my college, family and friends who have given support, love and encouragement in my development as an architecture student.

CITY LIBRARY AND MUSEUM SEM 07 | FALL SEMESTER

Prof. Manoj Ladhad Prof. Anand Krishnamurthy Asst. Prof. Santesh Kelvekar Asst. Prof. Pallavi Dhomse The semester’s focus calls for a Public building in the realm of the Urban envelope, under the shadow of the historic architecture and culture of the city of Jaipur. The direction of this studio is to gauge that the student is attuned to dealing with multiple issues of performative architecture alongside the base design idea, leading to an imaginative proposal. This studio is not about trying to achieve an objective score on “fitting” the requirement or designing an iconic building, but in achieving a design solution that combines simple logic, imagination, and street-smart pragmatism. MERCADO DE GOA SEM 05 | FALL SEMESTER

Prof. Ryan Thomas Prof. Srinivas S G It is easy to be different and not too difficult to be a copy of the same. The challenge lies in being able to draw from the place and interpret it in a manner that is relevant now. In doing so one is enabling continuity in time creating meaningful history. The programs pursued would be oriented towards bringing up aspects associated with the nature of public space and the making of the public realm. The program is derived from the needs of the neighborhood. The site is flanked by the old market, the Communidade and the civil court. The intent was to explore the possibility of deriving a built entity out of responses to the context. The nature of the building is to facilitate the neighborhood, how to go beyond functionality and be an exercise at placemaking. Project brief : Commercial building- Commercial, Office and Stay. Site location : Holy Sprint Church Precinct, Margoa, Goa Site area : 1200 m2 ; Built : 1800 m2 Duration : 12 weeks

CASA DE PATRIMANIO SEM 05 | FALL SEMESTER

Prof. Ryan Thomas Prof. Srinivas S G The program arises out of observing the existing condition of the built heritage that is undergoing slow decay. Ways of rejuvenating the place were deliberated upon. This included queries regarding how to keep the culture and the built heritage alive. The program involves exploring ways of modulating scale to create a presence at the precinct level but an appropriate one at street level considering the proximity of the heritage buildings flanking the site. It would also have room to look at the source of heritage and dwell in means of expressing it architecturally. Project brief : Heritage Centre. KRS BACKWATER HOUSING SEM 04 | SPRING SEMESTER

Prof. Kukke Subramanya Asst. Prof. Pallavi Dhomse The intent of this task is to design a housing for a user group with a shared interest in carpentry. The user group is not necessarily permanent residents, they can also be paying guests who come to experience this shared interest. Different scales of open spaces accommodate varying capacities of people. The task also expects the design to be flexible in which each house is considered simultaneously as a unit (Unique) and in relation to the whole group, without losing the quality, rigor and standardization that the social housing requires. Project brief : Low rise housing -- 30 units total, 3 types. Site location : KRS Backwaters, Mysuru Site area : 1960 m2 ; Built: 3000 m2 Duration : 14 weeks

SEM 03 | FALL SEMESTER 2018 (group work)

Prof. Kukke Subramanya Asst. Prof Toshi Singh Asst. Prof Indu Panicker An RSP aims to study a place (Ganapathi Agraharam) for its history, culture, people, and architectural typologies. The study expects students to research, enquire and analyze the place. Architecture is understood with respect to people and culture. The students understand indigenous typologies with respect to climate and socio-economic aspects. In the design studio, a site is chosen in the agraharam, a befitting design program is derived based on the student’s understanding of the place.

GANAPATHI AGRAHARAM A small village of Papanasan Taluk, Ganapathi Agraharam is situated in the district of Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu; 25km from the town of Kumbakonam. It affords a panoramic beauty due to its agriculturAL fields and the river Kaveri flowing by. The Sri Maha Ganapathi temple, Sri Vardaraja Perumal temple and a Shiva temple can be found here. The Ganapathi temple was the main reason for this settlement to come into existence. CULTURE AND LIVING This village revolves around the Lord Maha Ganapathi temple which sustained the Nayakar and Maratha rule. It is said to have been instituted by sage Agastya. Legend has it, that several centuries ago this land was affected by a drought. Gouthama Maharishi (the Husband of Ahalya) was traveling through the village at this time. He was hailed as a saviour and villages asked him for rain to make the land fertile. The Maharishi sensed that there was an idol of Ganapathi consecrated by Maharishi Agastya buried deep within the soil of this land. The idol was unearthed and the Maharishi appeased Lord Ganapathi with the Sadatchara Mantra, bringing rain. River goddess Kaveri diverted herself through the village for a darshan of Ganapathi. The village became fertile and prospered due to the temple, hence the name. Another belief among the people is that Lord Ganesha was born here. The village is based on image worship as legend proclaims that idol worship led to the idol itself turning into snakes. This is why idols are not immersed during Ganesh Chaturthi. RESIDENCE While most of the houses have no finish and is very rough, they stayed intact for a long time. Shades of mustard, red, brown, blue and Rama green decorate the agraharam. Most of the thinnais are decorated with red and white stripes of paint, an aftermath of the Pongal festival. The people live simple lives while retaining the charm of the ancient. There is purity in their communal way of living, not straying away from the essence of their being. While the residents are mainly Brahmins, the recent occupants do respect the nuances of the village. The older generation prefers staying here, even though the comfort levels of a concrete house appeals to the new generation. While some try to retain a few elements of the older houses, like the columns and axis along which the house was originally built, some eliminated thinnais entirely, maintained standard or similar levels and covered the courtyard. Agraharas are more humane, in a way that the house signifies the person, and the thinnai welcomes one and all. Thinnais are a thin line between the inside and outside, and act as an extroverted space. This part of the house was generously donated to form a connection between the house and the stranger or traveler, to ensure interaction. Even now, thinnais are platforms of communication and sharing for the people. The idea of knowing your neighbour, gives a very friendly appeal to these settlements.
