Bluetooth Technology Introduction ďƒ˜ Bluetooth is a new technology standard using short-range radio links, intended to replace the cable connecting portable and fixed electronic devices. ďƒ˜ The standard defines as a uniform structure for a range of devices to communicate with each other.

Bluetooth Technology Bluetooth Architecture Bluetooth communication occurs between a master radio and a slave radio. Each radio has a 48-bit unique device address (BD_ADDR) that is fixed. Two or more radio devices together form ad-hoc networks called piconets. Each piconet has one master device and one or more slaves

Bluetooth Technology ďƒ˜ Multiple piconets with overlapping coverage areas form a scatternet. ďƒ˜ Each piconet may have only one master, but slaves may participate in different piconets on a time-division multiplex basis. ďƒ˜ A device may be a master in one piconet and a slave in another or a slave in more than one piconet.

Bluetooth Technology Protocol Stack The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)has developed the Bluetooth Protocol Stack. The main objective of these specifications is to set down the protocols that must be followed by companies when manufacturing and developing both software and hardware to interoperate with each other. The main principle in mind when developing the Bluetooth Protocol Architecture has been the maximization and the re-use of existing protocols for different purposes at the higher layers. The Bluetooth Protocol Architecture also allows for the use of commonly used application protocols on top of the Bluetooth-Specific protocols.

Bluetooth Technology The Bluetooth Core protocols (plus the Bluetooth radio) are required by most of Bluetooth devices while the rest of the protocols are used only as needed. The combination of the Cable Replacement layer, the Telephony Control layer and the adopted protocol layer form the application-oriented protocols which enable applications to run over the Bluetooth Core protocols. Bluetooth Protocol Architecture has been developed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) are intended for rapidly developing applications using Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth Technology Transmission types and rates The baseband (single channel per line) protocol combines circuit and packet switching. To assure that packets do not arrive out of order, slots (up to five) can be reserved for synchronous packets. Circuit switching can be either asynchronous or synchronous. Up to three synchronous (voice) data channels, or one synchronous and one asynchronous data channel, can be supported on one channel. Each synchronous channel can support a 64 Kb/s transfer rate, which is fully adequate for voice transmissions.

Bluetooth Technology Advantages No line of site restrictions as with IrDA. power consumption makes integrated in battery powered devices very practical. 2.4 GHz radio frequency ensures worldwide operability. Tremendous momentum not only within the computer industry but other industries like cellular telephones and transportation

Bluetooth Technology Applications ďƒ˜ The Internet Bridge : An extension of this model could be a mobile computer that allows surfing the Internet irrespective of the location of the user, and regardless of whether the user is cordlessly connected through a mobile phone (cellular) or through a wire line connection (e.g. PSTN, ISDN, LAN, xDSL). ďƒź To know more about Bluetooth applications: http://www.edgefxkits.com/bluetooth-projects/
