housing
The economic diversification and development in the city of Mumbai, opened up multiple employment opportunities in diverse fields; this created a ground to build and develop livelihoods from scratch. It has thus always attracted individuals /groups/communities that were looking for a ‘Start’ in their respective fields. The majority of influx population thus belongs to a demography that are at a nascent stage of their professional or personal lives. They move into the city looking for a better job / education / lifestyle etc. from their native. The thesis looks at the emerging household typology of mobile households in the city of Mumbai. It analyses the ecosystem of a skilled itinerant migrant with respect to class, occupation, gender, locality, life style and daily routines in the city’s fabric, which creates an understanding of their settlement experiences. This understanding forms the basis to speculate the idea of homes at Entry levels that serve for temporary basis. It inspects the current typologies of entry level homes in formal and informal sector in the city and then proposes to explore the criteria that produces these housing typologies in a legal framework.

At Hampi, we see the confluence of the Mythical, the Ritual, the Kingly and the Common . These 1 four categories contain almost all the states of our being. The intent of the studio is the understand the existing context, both, Natural and Man-made, how they come together and how, together, they forge the Sense of a place. The intent is not to be imitative, but to be generative. Not to negate or ignore the existing, but neither to be subsumed by it. The idea is to learn from the builders of Hampi - to respect the context, even to be inspired by it, but in the end, to be equal to it.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala is an Ancient Ritual of Site Planning and architecture in Vastu Shastra which constitutes mathematical and diagrammatic basis of generating design. A grid of 64 squares was considered to be a perfect geometry to adapt for public building designs. The Intervention re articulates the idea of the 64 Padas,Into 9 modules. Each Module is governed by a program which dictates its form. The module becomes a pavilion for that program, thus resulting in a 9 program pavilions in a square grid. Basement Level plan 21

Building for Ultratech
Housing
Doddballapur,Bangalore
a Billion Competition
The urban sprawl encroach on fertile farm land and peaceful villages and convert them into disastrous rurban (rural yet urbanized ) unplanned developments. Most of these developments are unsustainable both in providing basic amenities such as water and power but also due to their chaotic nature do not create good social environments and lack sense of community. The other failing of urban EWS housing projects in India has been the lack of acknowledgement of the rural upbringing of the migrant families. The immigrant from rural India is expected to completely give up all his ways and modify his lifestyle to the architecture that is thrust on him /her. It also fails to provide for the activities and the skills these individuals did in their homes to increment their earnings and sustain themselves such as cattle rearing, subsistence poultry rearing and crafts. Our strategy for a generic housing solution is: 1. Modular housing 2. Not using heavy construction equipment such as cranes 3. Providing for an incremental controlled expansion to the individual housing unit 4. Providing two types of courtyards. One that will act as community spaces and the other that will act as utility spaces to rare life stock suck a goats and cows that can generate additional income to these household.

Construction for these developments need to be fast, cheap and should require no to minimal skilled labour. The structural concept which we have used for our development is based in precast and easy assembly. All coloumns, wall panels, beams and slabs are RCC precast extruded members which are assembled on site. Extruded wall panels are used as they are relatively lighter and can be assembled without the use of cranes or any other heavy machinery.Precast technology helps us in providing a universal solution.

Ground Floor built as a load bearing structure is retained as it is,the intervention is thus an extension over the existing structure. In order to ensure minimal load on the existing structure, the proposed intervention is designed to be very light through the use of structural steel. A RCC plinth beam runs on the roof of the existing structure, which forms the junction between the old and the new structures and ensures equal distribution of load to the foundation below. An external staircase and lift is added that directs one to the new additions. The structure is covered with a butterfly roof which allows for sky lights and ventilators at the top level. Precast Aerocon panels are used to make the external facades. Cross section columns built by intersection of two I beams at the centre is used to induce lateral strength to the columns.

Stages of Structural and space conceptualization built sensitively on the existing load bearing Ground plus one structure. Structural Steel was chosen to keep the entire intervention light weight. The Aerocon wall panelling and the Puff Panel Roof further reinforces the lightness of the intervention.

A series of details were evolved during the course of the project to integrate steel with the old structure. The challenge was to use steel in a way where the steel still belongs to small scale residential project. The combination of steel and aerocon blocks provided a wide canvas of interesting options to explore.

Located in the Pragati Maidan complex, Hall of Nations is the largest of the 4 pavilions designed by Ar. Raj Rewal for the international trade fair event called Asia 72.The building before its demolition housed around 70 temporary national and international exhibitions annually. The future design proposal also talks about a similar programmatic ideology. Both these designs cater to an audience that occupy the site temporarily and do not have any particular association with the site. The Hall of Nations occupies a site which is surrounded by strong local contexts on all four sides, but fails to build any sort of associations with it. The lack of associations with the locals can be seen as one of the reasons why the buildings lost its relevance over time. The project aims to rework the current programmatic projection for the new building by adding programs that make it relevant to the local context. It looks at devising an architectural mechanism to negotiate between the local, national and international associations with the builing; while retaining some essence of its past structural glory.

The idea emerged from looking at one of the most common construction system used to form joineries and combinations in timber and wooden members viz. tongue and groove joint. 1 The system formed the basis of creating a new type of building block that would follow the logic of the joint and could allow the same level of versatility like any other common building block. The new block was then used to come up with a seating design along the parapet wall in the corridor. The design used the key features and combinatronics of the new module to modulate the creation of space.

The Amir-ud-daulah library is the first structure one comes across in the Qaiserbagh complex. It is a white building that faces the Safed Baradari and sits in a gated compound. The structure has a strong sense of a central axis strengthened by the symmetry of the structure. Passing from the entry space through the adminstrative area one is led to a central atrium which is a double heighted space marked by colonnades. This is used as a reading space. The documentation process started with sketches of architectural elements and detailed drawing of the building in terms of plans, sections and elevations. Drawings were sketched on site over a period of 3-4 days. The draft on-site drawings were then used to achieve accurate architectural drawings of the building. Owing to the large size of the compound, the outside of the structure itself took one whole day to draw. On returning there were 3 sets of drawings prepared before inking the finalized set.

studio workshop
The workshop will began with a general introduction to the history of housing – especially social housing – in the Netherlands. Prof. Dick van Gameren gave a lecture on this topic, which was followed by field trips around the Netherlands focusing primarily on the city of Amsterdam. Here, like in the Mumbai studio, a few key neighbourhoods and projects were identified to give students an insight into the various typologies that one can find in the city as well as the changing living patterns and demands that the city is currently facing. Again, like in the Mumbai studio, we studied existing living conditions and typologies to imagine new ways of living in Ijburg using constraints such as densities, FSI, building laws, etc.

Jama Masjid of Lucknow was built in the year 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah as a congregational space for all Fridays and auspicious occasions in Lucknow. Raised on a high plinth, the steps that lead to the elaborate entrance, is very prominent. Next to the Jama Masjid, stands the Malka Jahan Imambara. It was as long as the mosque, but smaller in size. Along with the intricately ornamented domes, the pillars of the Masjid have carvings inspired from Hindu and Jain culture. The site is marked by three monumental structures –the Jama Masjid, Malka Jahan Imam Bara and Unity public school ,surrounding a central unutilized space. Each of these structures has a varied nature of celebration. The Museum of white bones is a skeleton that activates the edges of these structure and binds them together. The edges start spilling over into the central courtyard, that is flexible catering to the different demands of the structure. The program is a madrasa and a tazia workshop that is wound around a courtyard. 57
