ANGADI - A VILLAGE MARKET ALAPPUZHA year 5 I semester 10 Guide : Ar. Prasanth Pole Brief : Alappuzha was known as the trading capital of Kerala. Though the history is forgotten behind the technological and economic advancement, Alappuzha still cherishes favorable agricultural land and native farmers. The region surrounded with water all around and has network of rivers and lagoons. Kuttanadu is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried out below sea level. Due to the Geographical peculiarities the road transportation is not much developed. The people are forced to go to the nearby towns for the shopping and their other requirements. The above situations made me to think of a “village market where people could come for their needs and purchase. This will serve as a farmers market, craft display, restaurant and amenity centre. Basic Requirements : Agro Clinic Unit Labs Seminar Hall Performance Area Craft Workshop Craft Display Seed Distribution Veg/Fruit stalls Meat/Fish stalls Groceries stationary Shops Godowns

Angadi- A Village Market I 4
Historical town of alappuzha had itsown communication network through water system. Kuttanadu is a region in the Alappuzha. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala, with its unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms. Traditionally floating market are those markets where merchandise is sold from boats. Originating in times and places where water transport played an important role in daily life, most floating markets operating today mainly serve as tourist attractions. Thus the term floating becomes relevent to the place. This proposal integrates the waterways, which is even presently used widely, for transportation of people and goods.
The roof structure of the building is designed in such a way that it reduces the heat inside the building and each shops are built around the courtyard.
Angadi- A Village Market I 5
Ideas: The site has been divided into 3 different zones - craft, agro unit and market area. Therefore, it is also a tourist destination place where they can experience the culture of the place. Since it is along the side of the canal, most f the activities are happening along thecanal side. Also majority of importing and exporting is through water transport. Houseboat Terminal Main pedestrian entry to the site Craft zone with performance area Admin and agro unit Market area
process : The main access is through the middle of the site. From there secondary access towards the edge of the site along water body. Every unt is surrounded by a courtyard for cross-ventilation. Road access to the site is from behind and rest of the distribution of the goods through water ways. kiosks are along the water side for a better view. This forms 2 different streests.
