SITE JUSTIFICATION Nestled between the Ghats, Dindigul is an ancient yet active city. It is a gateway to many tourist hotspots of Tamilnadu like Kodaikanal, Palani and Madurai. Well linked by road and rail, the city is a mini transport hub. NH 44, NH 45A, NH83 and state highways pass via the city. An improved bus system suited to a post pandemic era can bring out its potential.

Industries are Dindigul’s heartbeat. The industrial growth of Dindigul has tremendous prospects. Trade is impossible without quality transportation, providing direct benefits to not only the industries, giving them the huge boost that they deserve, but also to the people and overall economy. Hence,

The site is flanked by the Courthouse, clinics, restaurants, a library, a TASMAC outlet,

noise and the stench of a poorly maintained sanitary system. Parking lots and auto stands are other truants. The newer additions to the site by a substandard redesign has seen no refinement. Thus, an innovative design is paramount.

which not only discards issues, but escalates the community’s stature is vital. This is a challenging task paired with the site.

environment and community.

The prevailing pandemic has evinced the ignorance of the common population with regard to their health. Tier-3 cities like Dindigul chiefly fall short in awareness in perspective with their metropolitan peers. But transmission risk remains inflated unlike rural areas with more open, healthier systems. Thus cities like Dindigul require our intervention the most.

ANALYSIS

Encompassed by roads on all four sides, the 6.9 acre site is sparse in terms of vegetation. Statistics show an average annual temperature of 27.81°C, and average rainfall of 717mm per annum. With a capacity to hold 75 - 80 buses, the bays remain unused to a large extent.

One of the chief fac tors in achi eving this go a l is the n eed for rea l-time in form a tion. P recise kn owledge of which bus will ar rive in which bay and when is ne cessar y. The steel-truss roof of the main departures corridor slopes downward to meet the bus bays. This creates an interesting cut-section and the slope is utilized in the rainwater harvesting system to collect more water. The absence of a closed rigid form allows the entry of air and diminishes the need for windows.
