Portfolio 2015 ANJANA NARAYAN Product Design

I’m ANJANA Narayan a product design learner . Currently studying in the third year. I BELIEVE, There is ALWAYS a solution to a problem, but one should also know when to pull the plug..(reluctantly if I may say so). Working hard leads to success unless the world is against you..and I don't think it is.. And all work and no play makes Anjana a dull girl..that's why I skate, plus play Rugby and Football!

Looking for a 6-8 week internship starting from first week of june.

Simple Product Design. Individual Project | 6 weeks

Problem Background

Pet bottles a major part of todays “On The Go World”. But very few people realize the effect these bottles have on them and the environment over time.

Problem Areas

PET bottles are difficult to recycle. Pet bottles don’t decompose fast. They contain Chemicals that are hazardous to health.

Research

In todays world PET bottles are being sold widely. What most people neglect is the effect that these bottles will have on their health over time. Traditional water storage techniques are proven to be healthy, long lasting and ecofriendly ways of storing water.

Target Audience

My product mainly targets people who travel frequently and clean hygienic sources of water are not readily available.

Design Criteria

The Product has to be Eco-friendly. A product that keeps you healthy. Also a product that keeps water cool when traveling.

Eco-Friendly

Keeps water cool

Keeps water healthy

Ideation

As my main motive behind this product was to eliminate the use of plastic as a material, hence a research was done in order to find out what locals have been traditionally using to store water. Animal hides, Leather bags and Cloth bags have been used to carry water along when traveling.

Explorations

I tried exploring various shapes and ways to infuse copper inside a canvas cloth material which is commonly known as ‘Chagall’ in Hindi. Copper strips were placed at the base and sides in different way.

Process

The main problems faced when making the model was the stitching of the cloth around the copper structure . the help of a copper smith, a tailor and a cobbler was taken to complete the model

Why canvas? Easily available Keeps water cool Eco friendly Can be recycled

Why copper? Easily available Has Anti Bacterial properties Eco friendly

The inner structure is made out a copper cup to give it a strong base, a cylindrical copper mouth which has a rim around it to help in drinking and also provide a grip to hold. The cloth was stitched at first using a sewing machine and after the copper structure was placed it was then stitched with the help of a cobbler using a fine thread and needle to avoid any leakage. A tight fitting wooden cork was then fixed on the mouth of the bottle.

To come up with a healthy alternative solution to PET bottles for water storage. The walls of the bottle are made of a thick, densely woven canvas cloth also known as ‘Chagall’ in Hindi. This cloth gives the bottle properties comparable to a clay or earthen pot; it keeps the water inside it cold. Copper with its well-known anti-bacterial properties has also been used as an interior structure. It can keep the water healthy and germ-free for long periods of time. This water bag provides a healthy alternative to PET.

Stayinline Everyday Science & Creative Intervention. Individual Project | 2 weeks

Objective

How to skate

To study a product and the science behind it and tweaking it to design something new.

Product chosen In-line speed skating

Parts of a skate

Hips, Shoulders and Knees should be lined up one over the other.

Washer

Nut

Shoe

Axel Frame 12.8 Inches

Wheels 100mm

Knees forward Hips low Ankles bent. Maintain a low compressed position.

Your foot should extend out at a 90-degree angle to your direction of travel.

Studying the body positioning when skating. It is very important to understand and learn the right techniques of skating. As the sport is very aerodynamic in nature the body positioning and movement has to be such that it allows it to flow smoothly and cut through the wind. Understanding the right techniques and improvising to make your own skating style not only helps reduce injuries but also enhance the speed of the skater.

Position of feet.

Feet should be at shoulder distance and should be perpendicular to the ground.

Positioning of wheel at turns

Feet can be placed with toes pointing outward to give more stability.

Area that touches the surface.

Problem Areas

Common Mistakes.

Learning how to balance on in-line speed skates can be difficult . Often this leads to various faulty positioning of the feet which cause stress injuries in time. Turning inwards of the ankles and the knees is one of the most commonly faced problems for most beginners skating on in-lines.

A common mistake that I noticed when skating was that a beginner skater always has the tendency to turn the ankles and knees inwards when skating. This happens when the skater finds it difficult to balance oneself on the central axis of the skate. This technique is not only faulty bu also leads to several stress injuries over time.

Explorations

4 wheel Set

3 wheel Set

2 wheel Set

I explored the various Sketches and forms by adding an extra wheel to the side of the frame and these are the few concepts i decided on.

Added Side Training Wheel

An extra support wheel is added only to right shoe. We skate in an anti-clockwise direction. Hence body is inclined toward the left when turning. So extra wheel is added only on the right shoe to allow ease of bending on turns towards the left.

Adding an extra wheel on the side of the frame to add balance and help learning the technique. More space when turning.

The final concept chosen was a 3 Wheel frame with a training wheel attatched but the middle wheel is not placed. Skaters go in an anti-clockwise direction Frame:12.2 inches Wheels : 3x90 mm

Final Model

The model was made out of High Impact Polystyrene. Only the right shoe has an extra wheel as the left foot needs more space when on turns to move. This additional traning wheel is an extra accessory that one can take off once the technique has been learnt.

A smaller framer with three wheels was chosen as smaller frames are easily and suitable for first time inline skaters to learn on. It has more stability, being not any bigger than the size of your shoe allows more movement on your feet.

Human Machine Interface. Group Project | 4 weeks

Problem Background

In todays day textbooks and lectures are considered quiet boring and monotonous. The new generation are more inclined towards gadgets and responds better to digital interfaces. Hence the curriculum that they follow should have a fun and an interactive approach towards learning.

Target audience

Students from class 5th-9th. Age group of 10-14 years. This is the age group where schools start Emphasizing on various new subjects.

Problem Areas The kids in todays day are more gadget friendly. They understand better when explained through various mediums other than textbooks. The daily school schedule is boring and monotonous. This reduces the attention span and interest of the kids in learning.

To design a digital teaching aid for students that will help grasp their attention and break the monotony of textbooks. The final concept was to design a console that is similar to a projector but is programmed with the software which has the syllabus of all grades from 5th to 9th. The aim was to incorporate different ways to teaching and interactive classroom activities through a digital media as it grasps the attention of a student.
