COOL SCHOOL, MONGOLIA WORLD WIDE COMPETITION MODULAR DESIGN IN KHOVD,MONGOLIA

For this competition we created ecomical, lexible and easy to assemble modules that fulil the basic needs of the school while maximizing efieciency and minimizing exposure to the local elements in Mongolia. Operating on the typology og the traditional yurt, each unit exploits existing site conditions by way of a selfcontained unitary system that readily propogates and adapts to program change as the school grows.

HVAC systems and distribution ducts for itself and surrounding units Red and yellow acetate panels create “honeycomb” insulating roof

Skylights lood the space with rich white toplight

Primary educational space for 25 students

Stairs provide seating & introduce conditioned air from neighbouring ”generator”

Hopper windows and pocket doors allow for North- South passive ventilation

PROGRAM: The hexagonal shape of each unit keeps the amount of unusable space in the plan to a minimum. As the modules snap together, the doubled wall space between the units acts as a conduit for mechanical systems. Because the the structural frame for each room is identical, the overlow summer pavilions can easily be transformed into conditioned spaces as the school expands. Construction can be phased, building essential services such as bathrooms ir st while maintaining a services such as bathrooms ir st while maintaining a sheltered connection to the existing school. Coloured panels in the truss system create unique quality of light within each space.
