Acknowledgements My hands on design have brought me various debts of favour. I am particularly appreciative to all my mentors! First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my Guide, Mr. Tarun Deep Girdher for his immense support, guidance and encouragement. Also for giving me copious freedom to make my own design decisions. I would also like to thank the following people for their invaluable time and contribution to my project. To Hasmukh bhai, attendant of RELIANCE MART, paldi, for sharing his views on the sell of organic brands. It helped me a lot. To Sarika Samdani, the associate of Kilmora for helping us out with the various doubts that we had regarding the package graphics, budget, material etc. To my batch mates Tripti, Shruti, Alexandra & junior Saumya for sharing their views and helping me out in every possible way. The idea of doing the research and gathering information together was really helpful. To Dr. Anil Sinha, and Dr. Tridha Gajjar for assiting us about the fundamentals of packaging in Departmental Elective module. And most importantly to my family, for their immeasurable support, patience and for building confidence in me.

I thank them all for being very supportive throughout this project.

Thank you!

Preface This document is a written record of ‘DESIGN PROJECT 1’ (my first classroom project introduced at NID), which is based on ‘Redesigning a range of promotional product graphics for a Organic Brand : KILMORA.

It’s more than just Design! we had to REDESIGN! So was expected to brainstorm a little more in broader spectrum and come up with the present problems that’s hindering the sell of Kilmora, followed by various explorations and coming up with a best possible project ideas under the theme of Organic and Ethnic Branding.

What are my concerns while developing a visual language? I’ve decided my visual language should be ethnic, a simple himalayanish touch that would have colour differentiations, yet united through layouts and image identification. Simple!

Why kilmora? Branding always attracted me, & Kilmora was something where I have a chance to play with not only one, but a wide range of products! Moreover, its a upcoming brand which is spreading it’s legs throughout, step by step, as they opened their 3rd retail at Kainchi! So re-designing Kilmora ethically, would spread and reflect the kumaun essence all across borders. This being my life’s very first Design Project, I could not have got a better hands on branding, than rebranding Kilmora!

Experience! Working on this project was a great learning experience. I got to learn how to handle a real-time project like this.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

PROJECT INTRODUCTION A brand promoted by Kumaun Grameen Udyog (KGU), Kilmora, an organization established by the Central Himalayan Rural Action Group (Chirag) in 1996, aiming to uplift kumaun rural developemental activities. Their products include hand woven and hand knitted textiles; apricot skin care products; organically grown culinary herbs, cereals & spices; processed foods such as ghee and fruit spreads.

PROLEM STATEMENT

Kilmora is still a baby brand! It’s products can be witnessed in few FabIndia stores and online stores such as jaypore.com. To stand out of the crowd, it needs to compete with the enumerable competitive brands exisiting in market.

SCOPE OF WORK

“Jo dikhta hai vohi bikta hai” To promote an upcoming brand, aiming to make it a ‘hit’ among the masses, it needs to flaunt it’s USP’s! And a good ‘package branding’ does it all.. Kilmora has to reflect it’s natural richness, it’s organic approach, handwoven and hand-knitted hardwork thus posing a need for graphic design intervention!

Data collection: kumaun

What is it about? After doing the initial research on the brand, kilmora. I felt to know a bit more of what is given, soo started collecting some data about the place, from where kilmora originated. KUMAUN! About the stretches of Kumaun Himalayas, its geography, climate, flora, fauna, population, minerals found, etmology of the term ‘kumaun’, and it’s prominent feature.

Data collection: kumaun

What is it about? And a little more about the internal Kumaun...the language and dialects spoken by Kumauni people, their native tribes,, the foldances that are famous there, and mainly the famous art and craft pertaining to that area!

Data collection:

kilmora’s product study

What is it about? The basic study of kilmora’s product. Observing closely the packaging materials, the types of containers they use for packaging, the amount (quantity) in which it is packed, it’s present outlook.

Where it requires Graphic Design Intervention? Smart packaging - convey a deeper message regarding the Himalayanish essence - effective outlook - USP identification - ethical branding - surface graphics alignments - colour palette - visual identity - typeface - organize - white space.

Data collection:

product’s competitors

Before analysing the kilmoran products, a peep into the competitor’s products was a need. To understand the market, the outlook of other products. So i gathered some products which may not be organic

but are competitor’s indirectly when we consider it as a whole!

Data collection While collecting data online, I found out that a gurgaon based Graphic design company named CODESIGN, owned by our very own ex-NIDian Rajesh Dahiya, has already redesigned Kilmora, however the reason why the designs were not implemented still remained a question, which on later asking our client Sarika Samdani, she quoted

“the packaging design for KILMORA by Codesign was done many years ago. The entire set of people have changed in the organization and I really do not have the answer to why that packaging design was not adopted at that point of time. The pictures here show the redesigned packagings for kilmora done by Codesign.

DATA ANALYSIS

DATA ANALYSIS WHAT AM I GOING TO ANALIZE? I am re-designing a product which is ORGANIC! That itself makes it unique, isn’t it? Then what’s there for me to analize in it? Well, simple anything and everything that comes in my way, which has got to relate itself to organic. Because all I want is ‘not

just another organic product!’

Soo.. Before analizing and narrowing down to the products of kilmora, why not just study a little about what is - ORGANIC, - THE TYPE OF PACKAGING IT DEMANDS, - THE SIMILAR BRANDS, like FabIndia, Asal.

Then, We can concentrate what KILMORA possesses already, - the present outlook of the products, - the dimensions of the package labels, - the colour schemes used, - the factors where Kilmora is lacking as compared to other competitive products.

Data analysis:

A look at supermarkets

We the group members thought to have a visit at the supermarkets of Ahmedabad to get an idea how products behave, when on shelf along with various other competitions. So we went to Hypercity of Alpha mall at Vastrapur, Ahmedabad and Reliance mart at Paldi cross-road, Ahmedabad. It was a real hand on experience! Some products speak loud to buy it, whereas some stay calm and command to let it get bought. Some are a visual bliss while some are a visual clutter. It helped me a lot to analize what an ORGANIC demands, or how a product can stand out of the crowd, through it’s physical outlook!

Data analysis:

Data analysis: FABINDIA

Then I narrowed down to single Brands, which has similar products like Kilmora. So I took a large scale brand, FABINDIA. - It’s an Indian chain store retailing garments, furnishings, fabrics, ethnics and organic products, handmade by craftspeople all across rural India. - The products are mainly sourced from villages helping to provide and sustain rural employment in India. - They are currently produced by over 40,000 artisans and craftspeople across India. - The hand-crafted products also encourage good craftsmenship.

Data analysis: ASAL

After a big brand like Fabindia, I went to a very small scale local brand Asal, located at 5 tejpal society, fatehnagar, Paldi, Ahmedabad. - ASAL- The organic food & Natural products store. - Asal represents a system a system of production that respects human health, environment and the general well-being of the planet. - Perhaps, the first commercial premises to not use electricity at all. Eco-friendly castor-oil lamps are lit and soothing air is circulated by traditional hand operated fans. - They have a product range from organic and natural foods, to cloth, cosmetics and toileteries, utensils of bronze (kansa), and glass handi (chandelier).

Data analysis: Asal’s products

Data analysis:

kilmora’s product study

Here I analized the range of products, Kilmora bears. - the weights or the quantity in which they are packed. - the types of containers used. - the varying quantity of substance for different package.

Data analysis:

kilmora’s product study

Here I analized the dimensions of the package labels and the product tags, to be re-designed.

Data analysis:

kilmora’s present outlook

These are the images of the present label designs of kilmora. As we can see it has a lot of issues that obstracts it to be called a good design. - It does not have a proper visual language. - All the labels are of different sizes, lacks uniformity. - It’s soo much conjested, lacks breathing space, lots of information! - There is no proper colour coding, for example: in fruit spreads the colour of plum chutney differs from the rest, similarly the colour of mint in herbs is two shades darker than the rest. - The visuals are not of good quality. - Overall this product fails to attraction attention. - The font size is way too small, in some areas it’s is difficult to even read it. - There is no proper alignment.

Data analysis:

Data analysis:

problem areas

Take the case of Herb, herb blends, or apricot plastic Jars.

Front view

The space between the font and the ending of the label is very less. The gaps between the font and the ends of the label are not uniform. Observe the top and the bottom.

Side view

The price of the product and the essential information are rubberstamped, in a clumsy way.

The lower part of the information is too small to read.

Back view The GAP between the starting & end of the label is too much, which is not required. If the purpose of the gap is to check the the level of the item left inside, then too it’s more. We can use this space for more information and save the printing there on the top label.

Top view

The top label is loaded with soo much information! The purpose of top label is if kept horizontally, the name of the product should be visible from a distance, i.e; ‘the recognizing factor’, which is not serving right here!

Data analysis After analizing, many doubts aroused, which I had no answer, soo before jumping into conclusions, our group felt to contact our client Sarika Samdani and get it clarified. We sent a mail with all our doubts and this are the answers we got!

1. What is your taget audience (i.e. reach)? There are a multiple sets of target audience: a. Currently we have three retail outlets in the region we are based in, so the tourists visiting the area is one category of target audience. The area attracts high-end tourists staying in boutique hotels and resorts. b. We also sell through prestigious exhibition like Nature Bazaar and Dastkari Haat Samiti. c. We retail through online portals like Jaypore, which caters to the design and craft conscious people. d. We also sell through a lot of boutique stores in big cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (House of MG), Lucknow etc. FabIndia and Anokhi do a lot of bulk buying from us, so a typical FabIndiash buyer would be our kind of client as well.

2. Will you keep these product only till your own state or do you plan to expand nation-wide? We have our retail stores only in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, but we supply to a lot of places pan-India and we are constantly looking for increasing our reach.

3. What are the Budget/ Costing constraints? Cost of paper and ink? Cheap and best :) See, we are based in a remote location have to get practically everything from Haldwani or Delhi. Secondly, the purpose of setting up Kumaun Grameen Udyog was to provide sustainable livelihood options to the local communities. Whatever profit is generated by selling our products goes in community development programmes. We support a school and a hospital in the area with our profits. So we want to keep our packaging cost low in terms of cost of production, but high in terms of appeal and taste. Also materials used and printing techniques should be simple enough so that every time we have to do a re-print a not so fancy printer should be able to do it.

4. Is there a constraint on the number of colors to be used (printing purposes)? Something which is doable in a basic printing press without compromising the quality and not very expensive.

Data analysis 5. Why have you used glass and plastic bottles for same products ? (Example: Rosemary comes in a Glass Bottle , as well as a Plastic Container too) The glass containers were started specially for one of our big clients Himjoli (It is a chain of retail outlets across Uttarakhand for products of the hills, one in Delhi and one in Bangalore). They needed glass bottles for gift packs, especially corporate gifting. They felt they could command more price with glass packaging. The plastic containers are used for our own retail sales as they are easier for the tourist to take back and there are no damages in the transit.

6. We will need a high resolution RAW file & a Vector file of LOGO as well as THE BRAND NAME. Will send you the best possible format I have.

7. Do you have any preference, imagination (how you want it to be), any design idea in mind? Simple, elegant, functional, shape and size such that there is no wastage of material, reflective of it’s origin i.e. made in Himalayan region and purity/genuineness, some consistency in visual language (right now different product categories have all together different visual language)

8. What font have you used in the labels? (Title font as well as the body font) Century Gothic regular

9. Can we change the color of the LOGO according to the product? No. We would like to maintain the same color-combination for the logo on all products.

10. We will keep the label sizes the same (as they perfectly fit the product) but can we break/cut the label in more than one parts? You can do that as long as application of the labels does not become very tedious.

11. What quality of paper have you used, its thickness in GSM? Can we change that or do we stick to the same quality and thickness? Feel free to change the quality and thickness of the paper according to your design. As you would have seen in the physical samples I sent you, that so far there has been no consistency in the quality and thickness of paper used in our packaging.

Data analysis Conclusion After gathering the information from various places, studying the available material and meeting some linked people, I analysed the collected data. On analysis of collected data and information what I found is :

Organic packaging labels -

-

they are simple. has an essence of ethnicity. mostly soft and light colours. the use of paper instead of paper & synthetic is encouraged. very minimal information. the typefaces used are mostly san-serif, simple. transperancy is innovatively used. innovative shapes. earthy feel, through colours or the material used for packaging. visuals are mostly in vector simplified form, rather than real photographs.

kilmora’s product labels - lacks organization. - no visual language. - too much information. - plastic containers used. - the essence is missing. - photographs are used. - very dull colours. - glossy papers are used instead of matt.

TENTATIVE SOLUTIONS - Make it simple - Soothing colours - Colour differentiation. - Image identification - Simple geometric typeface - A proper USP (unique selling point) - Proper simplified visuals - An essence that shows the fresh origin factor. - Aipan can be an option, to bring the kumaun essence. - Reduce the printing cost by resizing the labels a little. - Make it look well-organized.

The next step is

USP identification, which will make it stand out of the crowd, make it effective and consumer-friendly in all way! And then to sum it up,

Restructure the brief, according to the needs!

EXPLORATIONS

Finally time to do some hands on explorations! I started scribling to explore the sizes and shapes of labels, followed by typography, colour palettes, visuals, layouts, soo on & so forth!

EXPLORATIONS Keeping in mind the paper wastage, and the small size of labels, preffered to keep it simple, and rectangular!

EXPLORATIONS As the size of the labels are too small, some san-serif would work better than serif and delicate typefaces!

FINAL LAYOUTS

FINAL LAYOUTS After several iterations and improvizations, I took two sets of final designs forward. One is the patterned layout, which has the concept of keeping the periphery textile Kitchen Herbs collection as the background (the zig-zag motif which also resembles hills as well as Tea-like aroma and pine flavour. Excellent in meats and soups. cloth weaving), on which I super-imposed the main brand of their major products.
