Healing coronavirus patients is in her blood New health unit coordinator at Westerly Hospital beat COVID-19; now her plasma may help other patients By Brian Amaral Journal Staff Writer
Ashley LeClair had just gotten back from Florida in mid-March and she was ready — very ready — to start her new job as a health unit coordinator at Westerly
Hospital. She even had her outfit picked out. But the Thursday before her Monday start date, she started feeling intense pain in her lower back. It was the first symptom of what would turn into a weeks-long ordeal of high fevers, coughing and plain old exhaustion, now the hallmarks of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus. By the time she got tested,

All systems go for next phase of reopening Amid encouraging numbers on coronavirus, governor offers specifics on dining, youth sports, salons By Alex Kuffner Journal Staff Writer
“The Second Act,” by Ankit Mandawewala, reflects Providence branding itself as the “creative capital” in 2009. This design reimagines the building as an incubator space for performing artists and a venue for their work.
Skydiving park? Indoor farm? RISD students reimagine Providence’s iconic Superman Building By Madeleine List Journal Staff Writer
PROVIDENCE — Over the years, developers have proposed refurbishing the former Industrial Trust headquarters, also known as the Superman Building, for office space or apartments. But it’s 6not likely many people have pictured the 26-story tower one day serving as an indoor skydiving park, or as a center for high-tech science laboratories.

she knew exactly what it was, so the phone call she got a few days after doing a nerve-racking drive-up test with a very unpleasant swab up her nose was no surprise. LeClair tested positive. She wouldn’t be starting work that Monday. Instead, she recovered at home, trying to stay away from her parents — her mom also works at the hospital — and fighting off the virus.

PROVIDENCE — Even as the number of reported deaths from the coronavirus remained high on Thursday, Gov. Gina Raimondo expressed confidence that Rhode Island is still on track to begin the second phase on Monday of her plan to slowly reopen the
economy. With the numbers of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations both generally in decline, the state is preparing, among other measures, to expand in-person dining options at restaurants from outdooronly to indoor with limitations; allow gyms, hairdressers and nail salons to welcome back customers; let youth sports start up again; and reopen all state beaches. The Second Act Spring 2020, RISD Location: Providence, RI Critics: Liliane Wong, Jonathan Bell
Providence proclaimed itself the ‘creative capital’ in 2009, invoking entrepreneurship and revitalization. The Second Act re-imagines the Art Deco Industrial Trust Building, commonly know as the Superman building, as a vast entrepreneurial melting pot for performing artists. Superman is envisioned as an incubatorstyle facility to foster collaboration and growth, both for the artist and the audience. It is a space to prepare, produce, and present work. The bold yet respectful design re-establishes its connection with the city. It becomes the new marquee to the building, creating the energy within, and projecting it for the city.

Located east of the historic city center, The Beacon aims to reconnect the Royal Danish Academy back to the city visually. An architecture museum serves as an interface between tourist related programs and pedagogical needs. Set in a heritage site and surrounded by iconic architecture, the design is minimal, announcing boldly the Academy’s presence to the city.

Adapting and Advancing Market Typology Thesis 2017, KRVIA Location: Mumbai, India Critic: Kalpit Ashar
The project looks at an occupation, textile trading, studies the changes it has undergone over the years and adapts the current typology to the current pattern of use. It then modifies the typology to better suit the user pattern with minimal changes to produce maximum output without disturbing the everyday business. It further looks into the relation of the site in the urban context and introduces a trigger or a solution with supporting programs.

Nestled in the lush green forest, away from the city bustle is a quaint property, the structures originally used by a family as residence and self employment center, were abandoned and in a state of disrepair. The primary idea was to salvage as much structural elements and materials we could and with minimal additions convert the property into a bed and breakfast paradise.

Home for a family of 5, the tight match box shaped living room has a semblance of a larger space due to the moving wood and glass partitions, separating it from the kitchen. The use of wood in different textures and patterns paired with selective use of cane renders a sense of warmth. Set against simple marble textured ceramic floor, accent colours and accessories feel contemporary.

Untitled Winter ‘20, RISD Location: Providence, RI Critics: Sara Ossana, Amy Devers
Developed as a classic take on a side table, it is the first of the series with furniture that are easy additions to any space. Made from maple wood and finished with oil based polish. One and a half inch top with rounded corners floats of splayed slender legs, tapering towards the bottom. This class was a personal effort to bridge the gap between designers and makers. My association with furniture making did not end with the semester, I continue to add pieces that I feel are necessary and seamless addition.

This object is a part of a ‘Non-Binary Object’ coursework. The project started with the objective to identify and create an object that both talks about and embodies hybridity and non-binary thinking. Hand Scooper is an introduction to Indian culinary culture of eating with bare hands. An amalgamation of hand motion and form of a spoon. It can be thought of as a chopstick trainer. Using Hand Scooper facilitates learning the traditional eating style.
