The internship experience, at Zellnerplus, gave me insight into the various phases of how a project is developed and managed. The main focus was on the process of how a project moves from the design development phase, through construction documentation, and finally through contractor development. The main challenges of the project were to: update drawings to meet city and building codes, to design for ADA accessibility, and to prepare final documentation for official filing and contractor bid packages. The new, roughly 8000 square foot, Susanne Vielmetter Gallery is housed in a former industrial warehouse. The new gallery features four large exhibition spaces, an open bow truss ceiling, and a massive work and storage area.

Field Conditions - Conceptual Development

Courtyard, Bar, Block Typologies

Urban conditions of today’s modern city are composed of various landscapes, some of which are the residual and autonomous spaces that manifest themselves through the metabolic processes that cities undergo. This thesis investigates the fundamental shift in the practice of architecture in which architecture concerns itself, not with creating formal objects, but rather a connective tissue through the process of implementing repetitive spatial configurations upon the urban void, creating a dynamic spatial network that supports and promotes the diversity of the urban fabric. Typological and programmatic conditions and relationships are proliferated to create patterns of organization, which establish a dialogue with the urban fabric, mediating the urban void and creating a connective tissue with existing urban conditions.

| fall 2009 | competition

Located at New York’s South Street Seaport, this proposal attempts to recreate the traditional horizontal urban fabric into a vertical context by reconfiguring neighborhood clusters onto a system of varied neighborhood “plates” held up by an open skeletal structure. The neighborhoods in this vertical city are clustered around “anchors”- public programs such as parks, theaters, schools, and shopping centers. The anchor plates are surrounded by a dense fabric of mixed commercial/residential structures. As one moves further away from an anchor plate, the neighborhoods become dominantly residential. This vertical city is not enclosed in a solid glass skin- there are numerous open views into Manhattan through the city’s open lattice. A meandering ramp circulation system connects all the neighborhood plates but the central “mass transit” cores allow for easy connections between the primary anchors in the city.

For the design development studio, the focus was to upgrade a professional competition proposal through the design development phase, while implementing original conceptual development. Originally proposed as a competition by David Chipperfield Architects, this library has been conceptually transformed to have a public street / promenade which bisects the six different programmatic and formal cores of the project. By doing so, the library’s institutional image is broken down to a more simple house of knowledge which allows for various types of interests to merge and coexist easily. The design of the skin is to be seen as a wrapper that brings together the two parts of the library.

ANNUAL FRUIT IMPORTS INTO NEW YORK CITY

A semester at SOM involved investigations into parametric design and modeling. The program focus of the design studio was luxury housing, with an awareness of enviornmental issues. This project’s design and functional intentions were to harvest rainwater, to produce a method to grow crops in order to provide for local sustenance. The design of the water collecting modules, as well as the formal approach to the building was dervied from the spatial implications of using fractal geometries. The building skin, which uses parametric design was designed in order to work in conjunction with the rain collecting modules. The parameters that control the opacity of the building skin include solar penetration, and rainwater penetration.

The focus of the design studio was the urban intervention of a landscape which complimented the design of a central train station that served the larger metropolitan area of Madrid, Spain. The conceptual base for both projects was to create interaction through the implementation of various design strategies. For the design of the landscape, the introduction of various materials was used to achieve this concept, while program layout and distribution were key to achieve the concept for the design of the train station. The landscape was designed to be suitable to a wide range of uses and people, meeting the needs of those who lived in the immediate community.

The integrated lifestyle housing project focused on a site at Harvard University’s Athletic Fields. The goal of this project was to create housing for university students and faculty. The conceptual development of the project derived from the desire to connect all the units through a single circulation system, while providing for full solar exposure, and an unobstructed view to the city of Boston from each of the units. In order to accomplish this, units varied from single level units on the lower floors, and duplex units occupying the upper floors. The roof terraces are accessible for various activities and programs. The project houses twenty two units with a variety of other programs such residents.
