Urban Environments: Lavapies is such a diverse neighbourhood, where majority of its services accommodate from A - Z. As a group we proposed a multi-use communal space that would hold a large amount of Madrid’s heritage. Lavapies is a 24 hour town, with so much energy that many users miss out on its problems. Purely because it feels like ‘home’ to them. With that said, as a group we proposed of a space that could allow this relationship to still
ANMOL JAVID : PORTFOLIO
be the core of the space by introducing new and improved functions for everyday life. We chose to give back to the people of Madrid a green space that was missing. The project focuses on the architecture of the city by regenerating the existing site and creating urban landscape.
These connected bridges go through the proposed buildings. Should be noted the top ratio of users in the are were dog owners. That being said we agreed to not take away its existing landscape but in-fact to improve it.
The proposed design connects every element of the space with an open ’bridge’ to allow users to make most of the given space.

An exotic cosmopolitan flavour successfully drawing in visitors everyday, both local and nationally. PAST & PRESENT Traditionally the site was originally the Jewish quarter of Madrid, due to the remains of a Jewish cemetery and on Calle Salitre and the belief that the Iglesia de San Lorenzo was built where there was originally a synagogue. This tradition makes it clear in understanding where the name ‘Lavapies” comes from. Lava meaning ‘wash’ and piés meaning ‘feet’, which is a ritual performed by Jews to be ceremonially clean. However it is certain that Lavapiés was originally located outside the city, and has always been a working class neighbourhood. Today, Lavapiés is still home to new arrivals in Madrid. Where previously residents were primarily Spaniards from rural parts of the country and now the neighbourhood is home to many foreigners. Bringing in diversity from your generic Europeans and many of whom are Italian, there are primarily African and Asian immigrants living in the area. There is a big Muslim community, which is made up of foreign nationals from places as different as Senegal, Bangladesh, and even Morocco. Living in Lavapies is now more commonly known as a ‘melting pot’. This is because different communities all live in harmony despite the fact they had a rough past. Previously the neighbourhood was seen to be dirty and violent, whereas in comparison to now it is one of the most lively and colourful parts of Madrid. The architecture of Lavapiés, much like other barrios of Madrid is rather uniform with similar heights, windows, balconies, pastel colours and shops set up. The unique part about Lavapiés is that there are steep hills creating a dramatic effect on some streets to the centre of Madrid.

Madrid has a warm temperate dry hot summer climate with continental influences alongside mild cool winters and hot Summers. CLIMATE OF LAVAPIES, MADRID Due to Madrid’s high altitude of 650 metres, it experiences quite different temperatures in the summer and the winter. The most pleasant warm weather falls between May and mid July when average temperatures are between 20 and 32 degrees. FACT: It is one of the healthiest in Europe due to its close proximity to the mountains of the Somosierra (to the north and north-east), and Guadarrama (north-east) and Toledo (south and east). Pure air flows into the city from almost all sides. This tradition makes it clear in understanding where the name ‘Lavapies” comes from. Winter:- In Madrid the cold is compared to other parts of Spain with average temperatures of about 6-8 °C and the coldest month being January, although snow is fairly rare. Summer:- The summers in Madrid can get very hot. July and August are the hottest months, the daytime temperature will sometimes get above 35 °C.

The Zorlu Centre is just at the junction of the Bosphorus Bridge European connection and the Büyükdere axis that connects the city centre with its business district. The ground structure has been reconstructed by the topographical interpretation that acts as a shell to the transformation of the in-between layer for the proposed functions. The shell itself starts from the Boulevard Level, with a Public Square at the meeting point with the city, and rises towards south to east. In the centre you are surrounded by the Boulevard level which hosts a mixture of plaza style stores within the retail unit. The concert hall itself hosts for 2500 people capacity with an entrance as a continuation of the public square.

FORM DEVELOPING PROCESS The stages below demonstrate the proposal of the integrated pathways and the stages it came through in response to the study. The site is located within a busy quarter of Lavapies and buildings are situated on each corner with 3 access points for the community. The problem however is the access is blocked off buy its surrounding and doesn’t prove to be appealing due to the park being occupied by students who focus on drugs or gangs and culture clash. The proposal focuses on opening the pathways by integrating them through the new proposed programs. Stage 1 - The existing site outlined in red shows its context and the neighbouring junction it sits within. Stage 2 - The existing access route currently that allows users to accommodate for their everyday lifestyles. Stage 3 - The new proposed pathways that will be placed to attract users to the site with the many programs to follow. Stage 4 - Demonstrates the circulation and flow of the new access route within the context of the site.

Inspired by the clean and bold choice of colours within Mcqueens collection, The proposal is focuses more on the vintage side of the brand, with the store sitting in the heart of Covent Garden in one of its most elite hidden streets. I was focusing on the idea of Romantic Nationalism. This is one of Mcqueens core collections. The main columns holding the building upright is covered in a plaster element that defines and delineates the space. Also adds more of a purpose to them i.e.; railing for clothes.
The lower ground windows present an uninterrupted view of the store, while viewed from the interior, the transparency of the display units and mannequins’ back panels create a backdrop.

Currently London Graphic Centre own a 25 year lease on the site since 1995. It has been 21 years and have 4 years left before the release runs out. Currently there is no plan on whether they want to expand the site or move to a new location. Originally, they were situated next to M&S but the company wanted to expand their store down the street making it a huge department store. M&S later applied for planning permission and contacted London Graphic Centre who agreed to move around the corner. PAST & PRESENT London Graphic centre was previously known to be part of one of London’s big industrial warehouses. The existing structure used to be for a different purpose. The maps on the right show the history and development of the site in its previous year. As you can see it used to be a brewery where the owner would sell and import products in and out the city. The brewery was later expanded into a warehouse during the 1990s. The warehouse was commonly used as a place of storage for Fruit & Veg as well as other means of produce. If you were to visit London Graphic Centre today and look at the existing floor, you will be able to visibly see the paint work of how they conceal the evidence of the warehouse. Original features also show they had gullies so any fruit on the floor that was left lying around would be washed into them. These gullies are now covered in the floor work. As well as that, if you look underneath the stairs, you can see it has no support. Just a flat plate on the concrete underneath holding the staircase. Showing once again the changes made to the development of the structure

Contrary to popular belief, it is not always raining or foggy in London. In fact London has very little rain in comparison to Rome [Italy]. Summers are generally warm with daytime temperatures being above 25 degrees. CLIMATE OF COVENT GARDEN, LONDON As a large city located in southern England, the average temperature in London is usually higher than the average temperature for the rest of England. London is such a fast paced city that the general climate is effected by its pollution and traffic in and out the city. FACT: As you go further out of London the snow fall is heavier than you were to find within the city. Due to recent climate changes the snow doesn’t stick or seem to set down during the winter days. Many take it in for as little time as possible. Winter:- During December, January and February the average temperatures in London are between 5°C and 10°C. However, occasionally temperatures can drop to –5°C. During the spring (March - May) and autumn (September - November) seasons, average temperatures range between 5°C and 15°C. Summer:- Warm weather can usually be expected from May to September During the summer months June to August, average temperatures in London are around 20°C but temperatures can occasionally reach 30°C.

1 in 5 women aged 16-59 have experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. With only 15% of them have chosen to report to the police, whilst the others [approximately 90%] know the perpetrator prior to the offence. After looking into the rape rate within the City of Westminster, it became clear that majority of the cases are seen are gender neutral, making it important to acknowledge the importance of females and to keep them safe. As to say McQueen was a huge female supporter, his legacy today even supports and works in favour of them.

Instead of creating a new space to the building, I decided to extend the current extension onto the first floor. With classes running through the night to keep in track with the 24 hour lifestyle of Covent Garden. Access will also be available from rear end of the building, creating a separate route to the gym. Lifts will also allow users to commute through the store. The classes won’t be just for women, men can part take as well. As well as that, men don’t really have to come and join the classes, they can come and teach these women techniques and ways to protect themselves. Creating a strong understanding between the two gender role and allowing diversity to flow. As a result this will promote communal health and care as well safety for those who are scared to become victim to sexual assault.

Oiselle is a well established Seattle company with a close knit community of dedicated athletes. The project brief proposed an interesting challenge to create a small but flexible flagship store that would simultaneously accommodate a seasonally changing selection of apparel and accessories as well as becoming a ‘club house’ of sorts for Oiselle’s running community. The solution came by its four major design elements [the Theatre Fly, the Haberdashery desk, the Plinko Wall, and the Hero Wall]. These elements would seamlessly work together to transform the existing shell into a multi-functional space. The North, East and South walls are materially tied together with a maple plywood, both as a wall finish, cabinetry, and custom display wall system.

Other sustainable features include LED track lighting recessed between reclaimed wood ceiling planks, a pliable recycled-content rubber/cork floor that is easy on the sale personnel’s feet, low and no-VOC finishes, and natural linen fitting room curtains.

As any flagship store, I wanted to create a feature that would stand out amongst others. London Graphic Centre is known for its central staircase that has a unique support in the back. I wanted to keep the stairs in the same place but alter them to rather be reflected in a circular motion. Reason being was that, I wanted to emphasise the experience of the user with the staircase. I looked at the stairs at Palacio Do Itumaraty, which highlighted the importance of its stair case was to create a simple route through the space. The stairs were designed by Oscar Niemeyer and along with simplicity he wanted to play with an element of surprise. With this being in mind, I liked the idea of cutting into the floor and placing my stairs in adjacent to it.

With more experimental drawings, I wanted to create this exposer between the two floors. The concept behind cutting the top floor to create this [void] was through the careful analysis of my user journey. As you walk into a McQueen store you are instantly informed through the architecture that there is more to explore on the upper level. Ideally the upper level hosts more of the limited edition / made to measure collection that allow customers to work alongside the designer and create more bespoke item of clothing. The ground floor acts as the opening to the store with its buy as you come process. More of the social yet chilled side of the shopping experience where you see what you like, try on, love and buy. The drawings below illustrate the thinking process of between the finalised retail store form and the secondary function to its right, as an extension.

The final proposal of exposer for the store focuses on the helectical staircase that allows users to naturally progress between the two floors. With no division, users are encouraged to interact and socialise with the given retail experience. You can see the stairs reflect the void and its relationship strongly as per the brands identity. Placement of the staircase forces the user to come into the core of the building and browse with the products, whether that’s shoes ; bags ; accessories or even the further journey to the more exclusive made to measure section. The proposition of the staircase does set this division between the two levels of retail therapy.

The use of natural lighting was the key element of the design and it was achieved through the use of direct sunlight for circulation, as light would reflect off the glass for an illusion of the clear atmosphere.

The target was to allow you, as the user of the hotel to explore Shoreditch without the discomfort of having to get out of the building or the commute from in and out the city. However what most user miss out on is the lifestyle of the everyday workers. Shoreditch is one of those areas which brings forward the design world in an urban way. From street Art, to elite members only clubs. Address: Biscuit Building 10 Redchurch Street E2 7DD The former warehouse which is well known today as the Biscuit Building was brought forward in the 1920s to the corner of Shoreditch High street where it joins with Bethnal Green Road. The building is conjoined with the Tea building next door, a tea-packing warehouse. The Tea building was originally a bacon factory for the Lipton brand of Allied food Ltd. Both warehouses were later joined in the early 1930s. The Tea Building is an iconic building in Shoreditch today, with Mother London taking over the Biscuit buildings 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. The climate in the United Kingdom is typically temperate; moderated by prevailing southwest winds over the North Atlantic Current; more than one-half of the days are overcast. CLIMATE OF SHOREDITCH, LONDON Shoreditch sits close to central London and the climate varies just as it does all round Britain. FACT: Shoreditch has a vibrant scene and most of its entertainment varies in activity due to the weather. For example during summer days, if the sun is out and temperature is above 26 C then you can expect to see more skin than ever. Due to lack of sun in the UK, residents tend to soak in the sun as much as possible. With a fraction of the year being of rainfall to cold winter nights. During winter also, temperatures are expected to fall down to 1 sometimes even in the minus scale. Can be predictable yet unpredictable as UK’s weather has a mind of its own. The weather for Shoreditch comes from East to South-West, with the sunrise from East, the front facade of the building gets the most sun during its peak hours of the day.

By proposing a glass facade through the exterior and interior of the building, the user is given the chance to both work and live in a naturally lit structure. CONCEPT Linking the proposition of the new access and route to travel through the building.

The problem with housing today is that there is not enough space that anyone can afford living in, leading to poverty and eventually becoming homeless. The solution is taking small homes within the inner districts of London (i.e.: Redbridge, Newham, Barking etc..) and inserting a system that allows the users to expand when needed and make use of the space for whatever their requirements would be. It’s ideally an extension to the downstairs, which turns the space into one communal area for the family to create stronger relationships

within. The structure is adaptable in a physical form meaning it is flexible to the families. The inclusivity is that the partitioning walls can be used to create a private room and extend out, or open the space to latch with the existing floor. A benefit of the system is that, since it would be modular built it can be changed over time to the family structure. Considering the user group being of shared families, the space could encourage bonds between residents.
In comparison to the new world now, shared families is one of the biggest in Europe. Since parents were responsible for their children’s care, there is a moral obligation for those children to take care of their parents when they become elderly. The proposal takes on board existing British homes and adds the extension to expand the family home, which is later adapted by the younger generation as the elders become less able.
It will also focus on the original hierarchy of homes which existed in Britain decades ago.

Date: June 2016 - 2018 A live project based in Cambridge. Part of my work experience through summer 2016, where I was given the role as a design assistant alongside the artist, Stephen Pyle. The project was to enhance and rehabilitate the existing garden at Addensbrook Hospital. The concept was to take the south car park and convert its outdoor landscape into a communal space for the patients at the hospital. By taking the stereotype of hospital gardens being nothing but a waste of space, the proposal focused on providing patients and resi-

dents around the are to make sure of the back entrance of the hospital and be within an environment that enhances patient care. Allowing the user to socialise and refresh themselves in the garden space.

The main attraction of the garden was focused on a ‘tribute’ to Syd Barrett, who was a close member to the hospital itself. The centre of the garden space would inhabit a structure based around Syd and his love for art, with an installation of his infamous art work ‘the bike’. The project is to later be entered through to the Chelsea Flower show in 2018.
